Sharyl Attkisson, whose reportage was somehow not appreciated by the network news organization headed by David Rhodes, brother of Ben Rhodes, who wrote this email, continues reporting for no employer but her readers.

Relatively few documents have been provided that shed light on White House involvement in the post-Benghazi narrative. Previously, emails showed that then-deputy national security adviser Denis McDonough, on Rhodes' behalf, assigned Hillary Clinton-aide Jake Sullivan to work with Deputy Director of the C.I.A. Mike Morell to edit the talking points on Benghazi.

As the various agencies worked to edit and approve the talking points on Sept. 14, Rhodes emailed that there would be a Deputies meeting the next morning to work out the issues. "That's polite code for let's not debate this on e-mail for 18 hours," one official involved told me last year.

Multiple government officials including those in the military, State Department and C.I.A. have stated in documents or under questioning that they immediately believed the attacks, using heavy weaponry and mortar shells, were the work of terrorists. Prior to the attacks, there had been multiple warnings of al Qaeda threats in Libya and, specifically, in Benghazi.

In fact, in an early version of the government’s “talking points,” the C.I.A. stated that it had “produced numerous pieces on the threat of extremists linked to al-Qa'ida in Benghazi and eastern Libya,” and that “These noted that, since April, there have been at least five other attacks against foreign interests in Benghazi by unidentified assailants, including the June attack against the British Ambassador's convoy. We cannot rule out the individuals has previously surveilled the U.S. facilities, also contributing to the efficacy of the attacks." The administration later removed these C.I.A. disclosures about the advance warning of a threat.

Morell testified to Congress earlier this month that he, and not the White House, was responsible for making some of the most controversial revisions to the talking points, including removing the language about the advance warnings.


Morell, you'll remember, had previously not told anyone that he himself had edited the talking points and made various edits.

In fact, at one point, he claimed he "believed" the FBI had done so.


He would later claim his "belief" that the FBI had made these edits, when he himself had done so, was an "error."

Morell had helped shepherd the "Internet video/spontaneous protests" story along, by assiduously rejecting reports that this was a planned, organized, non-spontaneously-evolving Internet Video Attack.

[Morell] did confirm that he overruled guidance from the CIA chief of station in Libya that the attacks were "not/not an escalation of protests."

Morell, explaining his decision, effectively challenged the evidence his chief of station brought to the table in his message, sent via email a few days after the attack. He said the claim that there was no protest was based only on "press reports" and reports from officers who arrived in Benghazi after the attack had already started.

He said that basis was not "compelling" enough.

The email written by Ben Rhodes relied heavily upon the yeoman's work Morell did for Team Hillary and Team Obama in so thoroughly "balancing the equities" (which I'm told is code for "protecting the reputations of senior political personnel) earlier.

And just to remind, where is Morell now?

Morell has since gone to work as counsel for Beacon Global Strategies, a strategic relations PR firm dominated by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton officials and Obama administration officials. (Disclosure: In January, Morell was hired as an analyst for CBS News where I was previously employed.)

I think that was actually the next day, after the State Department had crapped all over themselves apologizing for it in the woake of the Benghazi attacks.


I think all those protests were less likely about the video (which none of those people had likely seen) than wishful thinking that if, as reported, one such protest had ended in the sacking of an American embassy, maybe theirs could as well.

The protesters in Egypt and Tunisia were in fact using the video as part of their excuse, but it was a very minor part in all the uprisings. I remember watching it live and the media was reporting that, the White House just used that as a reason to deflect from our botched readiness, which the press for the most part was willing to go along with.

There's another important aspect to Benghazi.  It wasn't a normal embassy outpost -- that was in Tripoli, the capital.  Ambassador Stevens and the CIA were in Benghazi for a reason that hasn't been fully explained.   One credible theory is that it was a CIA collection point for arms gathered across Libya after Gaddafi's fall.  Obama & Co got the bright idea to ship these arms to the Syrian rebels, which has ties to Al Qaeda. 

If true, its revelation would have been a Holy Shit Headline that could have put Romney in the White House, which explains why Obama & Co needed to bury it.  MSM has been complicit by never digging into this.  If so, it's more than Obama & Co getting caught just lying.

Hillary still has real exposure over this.

The White House had to come up with something fast so they scoured the latest Middle East intel  sent over by the NSA or the CIA (or watched CNN or AP or other news services), scrambling to come up with a plausible scenario that didn't point to their own incompetence, malfeasance and culpability.

 

'Hey, look at this, guys! There's some kind of protest in Egypt over some YouTube video blaspheming Mohammed or some shit!' said some as yet unidentified staffer.

 

And the word came down to run with it. That's where Creative Writing major and failed fucking novelist Ben Rhodes came in. He came up with the story connecting YouTube protests to Benghazi. As long as they all stuck to it, it would work, at least in the short-term. Silencing the surviving embassy staff was easy: speak out and you lose your job and your pension. The press could be trusted to bury it, keep it out of the mainstream, and people would forget. After all, they forgot about the hundreds of dead piled up as the result of the Fast and Furious operation.

 

That's how that played out, I'm sure. That's how it is playing out.

The thing of it is, these were coordinated protests and attacks specifically designed for that day. Granted the protests escalated quickly because that's what happens when you work up a bunch of Muslims like they did. We all know that. So even after all this time there should be some answers of who did it, but the CIA and the White House are not doing anything to find out because it's politically damaging that they got caught with their pants down and they are unable to admit fault in anything.
Really that's still the story here, the American people would still forgive the security failures and the intelligences failures that led to the deaths if the White House would come clean. Sure they would have took a hit at the time, but I doubt even that would have swayed the election if they showed some remorse for their failings. The two year cover up and the fact they aren't even bothering to find out who did it and the sheer arrogance that they won't look at their failings and who was also responsible inside our government is in my mind, criminal.

I asked my original source today to explain the different wording on the Ben Rhodes e-mail, and the fact that the words “State Department” were not included in the e-mail provided to CNN’s Tapper.

 

 

This was my source’s response, via e-mail: “WH reply was after a long chain of email about State Dept concerns. So when WH emailer says, take into account all equities, he is talking about the State equities, since that is what the email chain was about.”

 

 

The White House could still clear up this confusion by releasing the full e-mail transcripts that were provided for brief review by a select number of members of Congress earlier this year. If there’s “no ‘there’ there,” as President Obama himself claimed yesterday, a full release should help his case.

The Rhodes email shows a White House political operative trying to protect his boss two months before Election Day. Mr. Obama's campaign said al Qaeda was on the run and it was time for "nation-building at home." The terror attack on Americans in Benghazi didn't fit this story. It did, however, expose the "broader failure of policy" (to use Mr. Rhodes's phrase) in North Africa in the wake of the Arab political upheavals in 2011.

 

 

After the election, the Administration was slow to cooperate with congressional investigations. The "talking points" emails were released last May only after parts were leaked to the press. The Rhodes email was subpoenaed last August, but the White House blocked release until it seemed obvious it would lose its attempts to keep them secret.

 

 

All of this bears directly on Mrs. Clinton's qualifications to be President. Her State Department overlooked repeated warnings about a growing militant threat in Benghazi, denying requests for improved security. And the father of a CIA contractor told media outlets that Mrs. Clinton tried to comfort him by promising that the maker of the YouTube video would be "prosecuted and arrested," though the video had nothing to do with his son's death.

 

 

The several congressional investigations into Benghazi have been undermined by turf battles and shoddy work. We long ago advised that a select committee could focus the effort and bring overdue clarity to a shameful episode in American history. It still could.
