"Marginal Revolution" Economist Tyler Cowen Attacked with Pepper Stray in Middle of Teaching Class;
Attacker Identified

— Ace

First, the bizarre attack itself, apparently an attempted "citizens arrest."

A George Mason University law professor was pepper sprayed in his classroom today after a man tried to place him under a citizenÂ’s arrest, according to Arlington County police.

The incident happened at GMU’s Arlington campus, near Virginia Square, around 3:00 p.m. Police say the man entered the classroom and attempted to place the professor under a citizen’s arrest. The professor tried to get the man — described as a white male in his 20s or 30s — to leave, at which time the man pepper sprayed him and a scuffle ensued, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

You might suspect this guy was a lefty motivated by politics. Well, he may or may not be a lefty, but he doesn't seem to be motivated by politics.

He seems to have been motivated by delusions.

The man who attacked economist and George Mason University professor Tyler Cowen with pepper spray yesterday has been identified as 31-year-old John Pendleton.

Now, we don't know this email came from this John Pendleton, but shortly before the attack, a John Pendleton left this comment on Cowen's blog:

What better place to do prison research than inside a prison?

If the police and FBI won't arrest you for hacking my computer and sexually harassing me over the past several months, I will do it myself—in the next couple weeks before school starts again. Either way, one of us is going to prison

I will entertain settlement offers at the email address provided.

Sincerely,
Jonathan E Pendleton

I'm going to assume, provisionally, that Cowen did not in fact hack Pendleton's computers, nor "sexually harass" him, apparently remotely.

Coincidentally enough -- and this is true -- when Cowen was suddenly pepper sprayed in an attempt at a "citizens arrest," he was teaching a class on vigilante justice.

Cowen just emailed me to say he will go forward with next week's class, about Bugfuck Crazydrool Justice, as scheduled.

Thanks to Monty, @aoshqdoom.

120 I doubt Cowen would self-identify as libertarian, but most other people would identify him as one. He's super pro-amnesty. He mainly cares about having interesting ideas to think about and interesting food to taste. He thinks mass amnesty would raise the standard of living of poor foreigners more than it would impoverish the average American, so it's a good thing. Plus he likes obscure food, so more poor foreigners making interesting food for him is a huge plus.

127 Biggest news today was the new poll that shows VA Senator Mark Warner crushing his GOP challenger Ed Gillespie by double digits. This is happening while all sorts of other Dem incumbents are in the fight of their lives, and shows Virginia is now a solid blue state. Looking realistically at the electoral map, it's almost impossible for a Republican to win the Presidency. And with Hillary being so well liked nationally, whoever we put up is just a sacrificial lamb.

Me: "I can't afford your product and will be filing bankruptcy soon."
- "You can't afford NOT TO take this incredible offer, sir!!"

Me: "I've already said no to at least five of your previous solicitors' so-called limited-time deals."
- "But you haven't heard yet about our LATEST limited-time offer!!"

Me: "If you don't leave my property in five seconds, I'll fill your head so full of lead the DOJ will repurpose it as a cannonball."
- "But this deal practically is WORTH dying for!!"

Zero Marginal Productivity workers -- ie useless people. We'll have robots and AI do most jobs. Average person will have no skills worth paying them to do anything. They'll just live off welfare and watch TV and play video games till they die. And elite at the top, like Cowen, will do lots of interesting things. Average person will not have the ability or interest in doing anything interesting, important, or useful. His coblogger Tabarrok has even more out there ideas. They both are super genius semi-autistic types and have little in common with average people. Both are really interesting. Like hyper-intelligent robots observing humanity. 153 The suspected gunman who shot and killed a sailor aboard the destroyer Mahan on Monday was not authorized to be on Naval Station Norfolk, Va., the Naval Criminal Investigative Service said in a Thursday news release. Jeffery Tyrone Savage, 35,an ex-convict who’d served time for voluntary manslaughter and other offenses, had “no reason or authorization” to be on the base late Monday night, when he shot and killed Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo with a gun he’d wrestled from another sailor, according to NCIS investigators. Mayo, 24, was serving as chief of the guard for the destroyer, and dove in front of the petty officer of the watch after Savage took her weapon. Savage gunned down Mayo before being shot by the ship’s roving sentry. Took "HER" Weapon? Shit

The report by the U.N. Human Rights Committee, a panel of 18 independent experts from different countries, found general improvement in some areas — such as the handling of rights of indigenous peoples and the Guantanamo Bay prisoners — since the last such review in 2006. And while the panel’s experts made clear they generally view the U.S. as a promoter of human rights, they also found major concerns while examining compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. 175 Breaking News: A George Mason University law professor has been arraigned on charges of resisting citizens arrest, NBC News Reports. John Pendleton, who initially made the arrest of Professor Tyler Cowan for computer hacking and sexual assault, was released from custody after he produced a valid Citizens Arrest Warrant. Due to an oversight, the original, signed warrant was not produced to police at the time Pendelton subdued Cowan with pepper spray. Cowan was arrested after authorities determined Pendleton's execution of a copy of the warrant was acceptable under state law. Cowan is being held in Pendleton's basement until trial. Under house rules, Pendleton will serve as the jury. MSNBC will cover the trial, is expected to contain additional charges of racism.

While I would never agree to UN oversight over the US operations, I totally agree the US needs to clean up its act.  Baracka is droning people related to people selected as a target by a secret method with no oversight and no arbitration process.  You can't even see the list.  I'm not thrilled with the NSA spying on its oversight committee and disappearing documents.  I'm angry with the IRS for being a political weapon.  I'm beyond angry with how vulnerable to fraud our vote process is, and how much the Dems fight making it cleaner.

208 Virginia's politics are odd. But I think that it is a robins egg blue right now, but it will be as indigo as Maryland in the not too far off future. The constituencies just don't add up in our favor. Northern Virginia has the most population and it is growing, and most of that is from the Federal slosh of trillions of dollars coming through here. Its about 70% Portlandia, here, except for people here have kids, so occasionally they will pull back from the extreme Leftish brink. The Portlandians vote like the religious blacks in the state, but they would never think of letting their kids go to the places where "those people" are. And then there are some leftover Dixiecrats in the more farflung parts of the state that never brought themselves to vote Republican. Facing that is a strong military retiree community around Norfolk but they like John McCain a lot. There is a strong Tea Party element, but it is more vigorous than it is numerous. And there really is a splitter war going on here. I still say that Cuccinelli could have won if the Republicans hadn't knifed him in the back - but he would have been the last Republican governor of Virginia. Now that's McDonnell.

This is why the Israelis still have women in the military, but don't have them in frontline combat units any longer.

There would be cases before that where a strongpoint would be overrun. The relief/rescue force would find the women, all dead, grouped together. With a ring of dead men surrounding them.

The male instinct to protect women is still there. It has consequences.

Posted by: filbert at March 27, 2014 07:17 PM (roTS7) In a situation where, say, the U.S. has strict environmental standards and China has none, the solution would be to impose import tariffs that are equivalent to the additional costs that U.S. manufacturers have to bear. In the long run, environmental standards in both countries would tend to converge, with the U.S. relaxing them and China strengthening them. Theoretically, at least.

Nah - the proper thing to squirt on Krughole is preparation H - then watch him disappear (the man's pretty short, so it's not far to go).

I've presented papers at George Mason (Finance, not Econ).  Cowen's one of the good guys - not a political ideologue like KrugFart.  A bit flaky, but he does a great job of illustrating econ concepts with pop culture references.  And his Marginal Revolution blog is outstanding.

325 Two Russian cosmonauts and a US astronaut lifted off for a six-month stay with the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday, unaffected by political tensions following Russia’s invasion of Crimea. The Russian Soyuz rocket carrying Alexander Skvortsov, Oleg Artemyev and NASA astronaut Steven Swanson was due to dock with the ISS early Wednesday, only six hours after it was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. A technical glitch on its approach in orbit caused a two-day delay in their docking. The trio were using a fast-track approach to the ISS completed by only four previous crewed missions. They will now orbit the Earth 34 times instead of the four orbits originally envisaged. US-Russia space cooperation has been unaffected by the political and economic fallout triggered by Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, who is due to fly to the ISS in May, said that “politics starts to fall by the wayside” when working with Russian space engineers, flight controllers and cosmonauts on a daily basis. “We’re three really good friends climbing into a Soyuz (capsule) to fly into space. All politics aside, there’s no doubt it’s going to work for us,” he added. NASA relies on Russia to deliver astronauts to the station through the Soyuz capsule and to provide the rocket power essential for major station manoeuvres. The Russian segment of the space station depends on NASA solar power and communication satellites, as well as US gyroscopes and flight controllers at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston. The ISS requires tight cooperation between US and Russian flight control centres to keep it adequately supplied and staffed. John Logsdon, professor emeritus of political science and international affairs at George Washington University described the relationship as a “mutual dependency”. “It’s certainly not in our interest to so alienate Russia that we no longer had access to the station,” he added. “So, I think the by far most likely outcome is kind of encapsulating the station from the broader political currents”. Yeah? Hum? I remember problems in a Space Odyssey 2010?

359 Yup.... but now Legality is not up to the individual and his conscience.... now Lawyers are constantly involved in after action reports and such...

This seems like a step backward to me.

A warfighter on the battlefield should be the one deciding "no, I will not kill that unarmed man."  If a person is trained to let someone else to think about that after the fact, it's too easy to start psychologically deferring to another person for your morality.

365 Any firm sources for this?
How about the debate TV show I saw 30 years ago about allowing women into combat roles in the Canadian Armed Forces?
The study found the women couldn't pull their weight, literally, so the men in the squad/platoon had to do double duty carrying the heavy weapons and ammo; that the men became overly-protective of the women to the point of ignoring the mission to defend the women (although I hadn't read the part torquewrench cited); so the study concluded that putting women into nontraditional roles (like mechanics) saving men for more combat-related postings was the best use of personnel resources. You can probably find the full details Binging around for "women in combat roles" +Israel or the like.

I don't think you know the story.  They weren't killed in the same strike.  They were killed two weeks apart.  The kid was the target of the second strike.  When asked about the kid being targeted, Obama said the kid should have picked a better father.

It wasn't a mistake, and it wasn't collateral.  They have made no case for killing the kid other than who his father was.  They have presented no evidence the kid needed that sort of extraordinary killing.

405 Anwar al-Awlaki and Egyptian-born Gihan Mohsen Baker had an American son, born on September 13, 1995, in Denver, named Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki.[250] Abdulrahman al-Awlaki was killed at the age of 16 in an American drone strike on October 14, 2011, in Yemen, along with alleged al-Qaeda members two weeks after the death of his father.[251] Nine other people were killed in the same CIA-led attack. Among the dead was a 17-year-old cousin of Abdulrahman.[252] According to U.S. officials the killing of Abdulrahman al-Awlaki was a mistake; the actual target was an Egyptian, Ibrahim al-Banna. Abdulrahman al-Awlaki was reported to have gone out in the desert to search for his missing father but was sitting in a cafe when he was killed.[253] he allegedly was not al Qaeda but was sitting in a café with Al Qaeda when he was killed. And he was not the target. If he wasn't Al Qaeda, he was on their farm team.

407 Okay, I'll try to lay out my problem in a little more detail in a hypothetical.  A group of 17-18 year olds are playing soccer in Pakistan near a high level AQ.  Drone strike hits, kills 12 people.

Due to the special loop hole in the WH ROE they can claim any military age males were enemy combatants, not collateral damage.

That is bullshit.  And it is bullshit that the media reports it in a way that makes him look serious and strong.

410 Nasser al-Awlaki is the father of Anwar and grandfather of Abdulrahman al-Awlaki. Al-Awlaki stated he believed his son had been wrongly accused and was not a member of Al Qaeda.[254] After the deaths of his son and grandson, Nasser published a 6 minute audio message condemning the U.S. for the killings.[255] In the audio he described Obama: "I urge the American people to bring the killers to justice. I urge them to expose the hypocrisy of the 2009 Nobel Prize laureate. To some, he may be that. To me and my family, he is nothing more than a child killer."[44][252] He claimed his son was far from any battlefield.[255] After some media outlets interpreted his audio as violent, Nasser al-Awlaki made statements denying that he was endorsing violence.[citation needed] A brother-in-law of Awlaki is Tariq al-Dahab, who leads al-Qaeda insurgents in Yemen. On Thursday, February 16, 2012, the terrorist organization stated he had been killed by agents, though it was speculated by the media that he was killed by his brother in a bloody family-type feud.[256][2 the whole family is Al Qaeda

I followed the link in the wiki article you referenced.

Here's the language in the NYTimes article:
"Then, on Oct. 14, a missile apparently intended for an Egyptian Qaeda operative, Ibrahim al-Banna, hit a modest outdoor eating place in Shabwa. The intelligence was bad: Mr. Banna was not there, and among about a dozen men killed was the young Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, who had no connection to terrorism and would never have been deliberately targeted."

I don't believe the official explanation.  We don't send missiles into cafes without eyes on.  However, I hadn't read this before, so thanks for pointing me to it.
