37 Try to find a doctor that accepts Medicaid. I'm trying to help my broke-ass step-sister. Her plan (which the extended family had been subsidizing) was cancelled. She was forced to go through Obamacare. She was shunted onto Medicaid. So I'm calling doctor offices to see if any will take her on as a patient. There are a couple good urgent care clinics where she lives. That's where she used to go for, well, urgent care. None take Medicaid. So now she will have no choice but to go to a hospital ER if something urgent comes up.

Oh - politically?  Meh.  If - IF - O-care actually causes any political backlash, it will be only because of direct, concrete damage experienced on the individual level.  Iraq was a case of national hysteria where mission completion was never in doubt, and 90% of the "backlash" was a disgraceful and degrading loss of national seriousness in the face of a ludicrous propaganda assault by the country's own "press".

Don't get me wrong - much of the conduct of the Iraq war, esp. 2004- 2006, was inexcusably stupid (and obviously so, at the time, and described as such by some) - but for exactly none of the reasons the "press" or most Americans would have given.  

 

The country beclowned and disgraced itself in that war - the populace, the electorate, the press, hell even most "conservatives", the pathetic little worm McConnell in his mewling opposition to "the surge" (and many other GOP incumbents). 

 

Recall, the nation was "war weary" - weary I guess of being unpopular with French editorial writers, or batshit crazy Palestinians, or clueless Arabs, and other groups with whom we are always unpopular.  Weary, and too fucking lazy and stupid to think for themselves, and too ignorant of anything important in the world to understand things (but hey they've got encyclopedic knowledge of idiotic sports and pop culture nonsense, so they've got that going for them).  

 

Blah.  Iraq made me mortified and furious I had ever risked my little pinky for such a pathetic and unserious country.  O-care removed the last shred of respect I had for the country as one that was sensible or sane enough to avoid spectacular unprovoked self-mutilation.

Yeah, I didn't read the Barone piece.  And yeah, in general he's quite bright and easily the most truly expert nuts-and-bolts expert on American politics.

 

But that headline just triggers a response based on years and years of gross distortion (bordering on Goldhagen's "hallucinogenic"), all of it apparently ingested and internalized by Americans of all stripes, and it's part and parcel of our current national degradation.  Of course lots of other wheels turning here, but I don't see how you get this preposterously unfit and dangerously alien "president" in a country that isn't already severely degraded. 

 

The only night in my life I can recall not being able to sleep due to world events was the night McCain clinched the nomination.  McCain.  Because I of course assumed a candidate as ridiculous as Obama stood no chance, so I was trying to come to grips with the probability that someone as dumb, and psychologically troubled, as McCain was going to be president.  Well we know what happened instead - and in a very real sense, here in Feb. 2014, I STILL cannot believe it.

I have no insider info on that but I'm 1000% certain they do. The stats they collect are vast, and that's just from viewing from my end of the pipe. With the network connectivity and services, they're vacuuming it all up.

I just saw a Hulu.com ad about it so now I am fully informed. The ad shows a son and a mother. The son says he cannot afford health insurance. The mother insists that now he can. At reduced rates. The son appears to be living with his mother or obviously isn’t that successful since he needs her guidance on the matter in his twenties. She then tells him not only can he afford it but if he can’t then he can get help paying for it. This must be ACA because the first “success” story I heard when ACA was implemented was a guy who had majored in videography in college, made 20K a year in Hollywood and was getting his health insurance for seventy dollars a month. That’s amazing, I thought. Of course people who didn’t major in something that was largely useless for a viable income had to pay much much more and were not subsidized by the government. So I guess the mother had heard of this story and was gleefully relaying it to her son that he too could pay less while others paid more. And better yet with expanded Medicaid many will not pay at all. And when subsidized by the government that means subsidized by the producers’ taxes so it equates to one man paying for another according to his need. According to need. Where have I heard that before? Let me see---yep there it is, written by Karl Marx. You see, we all work for a common good. I should pay more so someone else pays less or not at all. Redistribution of my income to those who are less successful. And at the same time taking over the means of production. That would be us providers as I was one for thirteen years. Right. I have no idea what Marxism is at all. Silly me. I have it all wrong. Taking one’s income and giving it to another in the form of reduced rates for insurance is capitalistic. Forgive me my error. If we continue this we will fall. Don’t just believe my fictional prophecies. The problem with the Progressive worldview is it is discounted by a really inconvenient entity. That would be history. But I’m sure this time Mr. Progressive, entitlement programs will reduce poverty. Because history shows it does. Wait a minute, I stand corrected. History doesn’t show that at all. I am really glad it is gone, and glad it didn't fall on anyone in the process. We are getting pretty good at felling trees, but this one was tricky since it was leaning the wrong way and my dad had to scramble up a wet slope to get out of the way when it finally began to fall.
