Mikhail Kalishnikov Expressed Remorse Over His Famously Lethal Creation Before His Death
— Ace

Came across this in French, which I'll translate to keep my hand in.

DEAD: The father of the legendary Soviet assault rifle AK-47, Mikhail Kalachnikov, was asked, before his death last December, about the consequences of his invention. He opened up about it to the Orthodox church.

"My sadness is unbearable... if my rifle had ended the life of people, am I, Mikhail Kalschnikov, son of a peasant, Orthodox Christian, am responsible for the death of humans, even if they were enemies?" he asked himself in a letter dated April 7 and quoted by the daily paper Izvestia.

"Mikhail Kalachnikov had indeed written a letter to the Patriarch Kirill (head of the Russian Orthodox church) in which he expressed his preoccupation over the consequences of the use of his weapon," the spokesman for the Patriarch, Alexandre Volkov confired to AFP. "The Patriarch had responded in a private letter," he added without comment.

The AK-47, symbol of the Revolutionary army

"He invented his weapon for defending his Motherland and not for the terrorists of Saudi Arabia to use," according to Mr. Volkov, quoted by Izvestia.

The assault rifle Kalachnikov, conceived in 1947, had been produced, according to some estimates, into 100 million copies in the world. This weapon, robust and inexpensive, famously become the symbol of the guerrilla army for independence, and adorns a number of flags, including those of Mozambique and the Lebanese Shi'ite faction of Hezballah.

Born in 1919 in a village in Siberia, Mikhail Kalchnikov had been buried with the nation's highest military honors near Moscow.

...

Okay, so that was a waste of your time. That was just some easy homework for me. So here are some Open Thread links:

only 24% of those signing up for Obamacare are young, a far cry from the 39% they were hoping for to make the system solvent (and, note, that it's not just that they need young -- they need healthy, a point mentioned in my first post of the day, below);

CNN actually troubles itself to note that Obama's "four million have signed up for Medicaid under Obamacare!" claim is nonsense (though they caveat it as probably nonsense);

13 new Benghazi docs from Jennifer Griffin other details, they reveal gaps in the military's positioning of assets around the world. For example, no attack aircraft were placed on high alert on Sept. 11, and the closest F-16 fighter planes to any of the trouble spots in North Africa were in Aviano, Italy. None were armed, and the closest air refuellers were positioned 10 hours away at a base in Great Britain. No Defense Department AC-130 gunships were within a 10-hour flight to Libya, according to committee members who heard commanders' testimony over the past 15 months. And the commander's in-extremis force, which included a unit of 23 special operators who are used at the commander's discretion, were training in Croatia that day. They did not make it to a staging base in Sigonella, Italy, for another 19 hours after the attack began, according to committee members. Rep. Martha Roby, the Republican chairwoman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, concluded: "It does not appear that U.S. military forces, units, aircrafts, drones, or specific personnel that could have been readily deployed in the course of the attack in Benghazi were unduly held back, or told to stand down, or refused permission to enter the fight. Rather, we were so badly postured, they could not have made a difference or we were desperately needed elsewhere."

20 The new congressional testimony also shows that Ham was left out of White House-led discussions regarding preparedness and force posture on the eve of Sept. 11, despite White House assurances that then-counterterrorism adviser John Brennan had met for weeks with deputies and the nation's principal national security advisers to review "security measures" and force protection at home and abroad. A White House press release on the eve of the Benghazi attack stated unequivocally: Brennan "convened numerous meetings," and the president and his national security principals discussed "steps taken to protect U.S. persons and facilities abroad." But according to Ham, whose area of operation came under attack, he was not asked what forces he had pre-positioned in the event of an attack and whether they were they sufficient

24 And yet AFRICOM commanders were aware of a deteriorating security situation in Libya, and had discussions at the Defense secretary and Joint Chiefs level, following a visit to Libya in December 2011 by then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Panetta and his aides noted the rise of violent militias and the lack of any Marine element at the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli. It is customary for the State Department to enlist the help of a Marine detachment to secure Embassy property and classified materials in most countries around the world. Ham and other Pentagon officials had offered to provide Ambassador Chris Stevens with Marines for the Embassy in Tripoli. One of the remaining questions is why the State Department did not accept the Pentagon offer. There were no U.S. Marines stationed anywhere in Libya on the night of the attack.

30 Ham argued against repeated suggestions by committee members and some military analysts that sending an F-16 to fly over Benghazi on the night of the attack would have made any difference. In Afghanistan and elsewhere during the past 12 years of war, U.S. fighter jets have routinely been used in unarmed flyovers to disperse enemy forces without dropping bombs. "I considered and could have placed aircraft on heightened alert and probably could have relocated them into other places," Ham told the subcommittee. "But I, again, knowing the intelligence that I had at the time, not obviously what I have now, but the intelligence I had at the time caused me to conclude in my military judgment that attack aircraft would not be the appropriate response tool. And so I did not direct a heightened alert." AFRICOM commanders and Pentagon officials say they were more focused on threats emanating from Tunisia, Egypt and Sudan on Sept. 11, 2012. "As I look back at the intelligence, I don't see the indications of imminent attack in Benghazi," Ham said.

34 Further, the quick response force that was mobilized, a FAST team of Marines in Rota, Spain, was forced to deplane and change out of their uniforms before flying to Libya, committee members learned. "When we got people down do you really have -- do you really actually let somebody push the military around and say, well, you are in the wrong uniform," Chaffetz asked in disbelief. "Is that really a reason to delay the FAST team coming in to protect Americans, that they are not wearing a t-shirt?"

37 Given the rising instability in Libya before the attack, it continues to vex many congressional Armed Services Oversight members as to why the State Department did not request any Marines to be at the Embassy in Tripoli or at the temporary mission in Benghazi prior to the attack, suggesting a reluctance to have uniformed U.S. military on the ground in Libya before, during and after the attack

41 Kalashnikov developed the AK-47 at the tail end of WWII as a cheap, reliable automatic rifle for the Red Army. Once it was accepted by the Soviet government he had no control over who was given a copy of it nor what was done with it.

Plus the USSR had a number of talented gun designers working on similar ideas - so if it hadn't been Kalashnikov, it would have been someone else like Simonov or Tokarev. So the fault lies with the nasty Soviet government who handed out AK-47s like party favors to every terrorist group in the world than the man himself.

58 "I can't tell you what the genesis was. We found no evidence in our thorough review of all of those classified documents again, some 4,000 of them. We found no evidence that there was any involvement in the video leading up or during the day of the attack," Rogers said, adding: "The only discussion of the video came subsequent to the attack. That's at least in the realm of my investigation through the intelligence committee. We again, found no evidence that that video had anything to do with the attack." Rogers said the statements from survivors to his committee reinforced those conclusions. "Individuals on the ground said, 'Hey, this is a terrorist led event' in our interviews. Leading up to the event it was very clear by the classified information that was being provided that the intelligence gathered said that there was a terrorist activity event likely to happen and it was getting worse or more probable as it got close to the 9/11 date."

"I will only say this, there's an additional security request to upgrade security at the compound based on increased threats from Al Qaeda groups in Benghazi. That request was denied, this security request was submitted about a month, or six weeks after the lease was renewed. How could they miss all of this?" This document raises new questions about the testimony of Undersecretary Patrick Kennedy before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in October, when he initially claimed all requests had been met, but under questioning conceded one request had not been fulfilled. "The State Department responded to every single one of the requests for -- for increased security enhancements in Benghazi. And I -- I would be glad to submit for the record a list of all the security enhancements that we put into place in Benghazi," Kennedy testified. "Except for one request ... all the requests that were filed by our embassy in Tripoli, on behalf of the temporary mission facility in Benghazi, were met. They asked for funding for concrete jersey barriers to increase the perimeter. They asked for four steel drop-arms in order to make sure that cars could not -- could not crash through the gate."

73 I think they are referring to this: Foreign Emergency Support Team (FEST) The Foreign Emergency Support Team is the United States Government's only interagency, on-call, short-notice team poised to respond to terrorist incidents worldwide. Led and trained by the Operations Directorate of the Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism, it assists U.S. missions and host governments in responding quickly and effectively to terrorist attacks. The FEST, which has deployed to over 20 countries since its inception in 1986, leaves for an incident site within four hours of notification, providing the fastest assistance possible. The FEST provides round-the-clock advice and assistance to Ambassadors and foreign governments facing crisis. The Team is comprised of seasoned experts from the Department of State, FBI, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and the Intelligence Community. Once on the scene, FEST members help Ambassadors assess the emergency, advise on how best to respond, and assist in managing consequent operations. FEST provides: Seasoned crisis management expertise Time-sensitive information and intelligence Planning for contingency operations Hostage negotiating expertise Reach-back to Washington agencies Refer to here: http://2001-2009.state.gov/s/ct/about/c16664.htm (Unless there is some FAST unit but kind of doubt it.)

82 RE: The Amsterdam story. What a load of crap. The writing, I mean, not the subject itself. Take the lede: "For many decades now, the Dutch have been leading the way on liberal social policies and the United States slowly, ever so slowly, one state at a time, has been following behind." Right. And none of the "liberal social policies" listed has had negative societal consequences, which is why the Dutch have walked so many of them back. The author even sings the praises of state sponsored euthanasia! I wish he's give that one a try and then report back to us. And further along: "In the United States, if past experience is any indication, New England and a few states in the West, especially the West Coast, might find this approach interesting. Newly liberal New York City might be receptive, too. But as Americans have seen with marijuana, same-sex marriage, physician-assisted deaths and needle-exchange programs, even this relatively innocuous toast to human frailty with a can of beer is likely to run up against deeply ingrained notions about temperance and the work ethic." What a load of crap. The whole article is written as if the author is chanting "four legs good, two legs bad!" under his breath as he's writing it. Oh, Sorry, I got that wrong, I mean chanting "Liberals good; conservatives evil". As a conservative, if my tax dollars are going to go to pay people who don't work for existing, the very least I'd like to get from that is clean cities. Imagine, a block captain shows up Monday morning with a bullhorn "ATTENTION WELFARE RECIPIENTS OF THE 2500TH BLOCK OF BROADWAY! I HAVE YOUR CHECKS HERE, AS SOON AS ALL THIS TRASH IS PICKED UP AND THE PORCH AT #2517 IS PAINTED, Y'ALL CAN HAVE THEM!" Work ethic? There's your Goddamn work ethic, and as a bonus people won't be living in squalor. You wanna sit on your ass all day and suck at the public teat? Fine, at least sit on your ass in a clean environment and don't make me look at your trash.

88 @72 - let's face facts, Russian industry moving east as fast as the Wehrmacht could chase it wasn't in a position to make something "a tad more complicated". The Russkies did miracles with what they had, the later T-34s were better than anything we had on tracks and they figured out the "diesel doesn't roast your tankers" thing fifteen years before we did. You can only have so many hundred charred corpses before you realize there are factors beyond running everything off the same gasoline pipeline.

61 so the video lie DID NOT come from the military commanders

and the video lie DID NOT come from the intel community

The first that I heard of 'The Video'...was in regard to the demonstration in Egypt, the day before.

News accounts said that people were demonstrating outside the US Embassy in Egypt...to "protest a Video'.

And the guy who made 'The Video' was from Egypt, so it sort of made sense.

I think that Barky's spin doctors got the idea from that, and transposed it onto the Benghazi disaster.

They had been declaring that they had "Al Qaeda on the run".

So they were desperate to cover up any terrorist attacks.

171 144 There you are! I was looking for you in the last thread. If one were wanting to read his bible for inspiration, what would you suggest? Earlier, a friend told me Job. I just started that. If it matters, all I have is a NIV study that was a gift from a dear friend years ago. I know last week, in a morning thread, you posted a link to a video you wanted me to watch. Sorry to say, but I never made the time to do so... Do you still have that?

Perhaps some of the other fellows here have some suggestions for other books to read on the Christian life. i am so happy that you are pursuing this interest, Chi. God bless you.

I call bullshit! Hugo Schmeisser probably invented the AK. He was "working" in the same factory as Kalishnikov when the AK47 was invented. But you couldn't tell the Soviet people that a former inventor for the Nazi's was responsible for it, hence the Potemkin Kalishnikov story. Schmeisser was a genius and was responsible for many firearm innovations. Aside from the AK, what else did Kalishnikov "invent"? Nada. Exactly.

"Working"translates to slave/prisoner/POW, whatever. A lie repeated often enough becomes the truth.

191 This is the video, Chi. It's from a site by a woman who was an Atheist and became a Christian. The title is "Are we all delusional? Questions about having a relationship with God." It's about half an hour but good if you want to devote the time to it. The Book of Job is heavy and the basic thrust of it is "God is in charge", his friends and family say stupid stuff and ask dumb questions, and Job remains faithful. It's a great book but I wouldn't recommend it if you're getting back to the Bible after years. But you're started on it so see what you think. I recommend mark because its the most accessible Gospel in my opinion.

232 Still smokers needed their nicotine fix. Many times, even Japanese cigarettes were not to be had, and that meant going to raw native tobacco. In Southeast Asia the prisoners' generic name for the stuff was wog. It went by all kinds of individual names. .. Monkey Fur ... The Beard of the Prophet ... Wog's Armpit. It came in different colors, from orange to black, the darkest so strong if left the inhaler feeling as if he had been scalped. ...

Cigarette paper was scarce in camp. After they were all gone, any kind of paper was rolled. ... Toilet paper - the Japanese issue had more value as cigarette paper, so it got promoted from the latrine run. ...

Books were rolled. ... the collected works of Shakespeare (Titus Andronicus was smoked early and noted as burning with a blue flame) ...

The rolling paper of choice was Bible paper, because it was the thinnest. ... Rolling with religious paper had a whole theology attached to it.  A Dutch Jesuit chaplain on Sumatra said the word of God was sanctified, not the paper, so roll away. ... For those who were willing to read before rolling, where should they start? ... The Dutch Jesuit said the Old Testament, then the Acts of the Apostles ... then the Gospels; leave the Sermon on the Mount for last, and learn it before smoking it.

The other version of Fast and Furious comes to mind as the reason: moving missing stuff to Syria.

Remember, boys and girls, when the national press, a couple of weeks ahead of the fabulous FBI four hour "investigation" of the trashed and unprotected terrorist consulate (but weeks after the British press had reported, the next day, how the consulate was unprotected), how reporters collected secure documents and a diary by the Ambassador? Remember  how one reporter interviewed, in a freaking restaurant, one of the murdering offal of the attack? They were starting to see the light and/or read the entire British Press about the terrorist attack on 9/11/12. How the Brits had left the summer before as, uh, it was not safe, and, uh, it was 9/11 and "what does it matter, anyway?"

Yet! No one is still arrested nor caught for the murders and terrorist attack of 9/11/12, by the freaking United States of America. Nor was there an attempted rescue by the greatest military of the United States of America, as they did not want a "terrorist attack" to happen in an election year under The Won. The same jackass who allowed this to happen was protected by this same group of "journalists" and allowed to weaken us further. They are accountable, the media, more than the LIV.

I hope someone, even a little minion type, is sweating a little in the WH tonight due to the documents. I hope.

How the Detroit City Council President Pro Tem lives:

Detroit Police are investigating why Cushingberry received only a ticket for improper signlaing after cops stopped him last week and found an empty bottle of alcohol in the car and smelled marijuana.

Fox 2 reports Cushingberry's former 3,500-square-foot house on the 8000 block of Marygrove has been vacant for months. The side is missing and vandals have tried to break in.

"The house is a mess. It's nothing in there. It's a shell," Herbert Russell, Cushingberry's neighbor and Marygrove block club president. "There's no countertops; there's no sinks; there's no toilets."

He says the City Council President Pro Tem moved out after winning the election and took everything with him.

It was unclear from the report whether Cushingberry took all the fixtures with him. He apparently lost the house in his bankruptcy, in which he lost other real estate after racking up more than $500,000 in debt. The financial problems were first reported by Motor City Muckraker.

I've gotten a lot of out-of-print hardcovers in good condition for reasonable prices. Since it's kind of a niche interest, they're usually not very expensive. On the other end of the scale, a few months ago I bought an out-of-print NASA publication about the Wallops Island test site for $100. There apparently aren't many copies around. At 700 pages, I'll probably never read the whole thing (even I'm not that interested in it), but it's nice to have as a reference.

The lawsuit, filed against police and sheriff's officials in Deming and Hidalgo County, which borders Mexico, alleges Deming police sought a search warrant for Eckert because they thought he appeared to be clenching his buttocks.

Posted by: TheQuietMan I watched a documentary about the AK-47 years ago, and they asked Kalashnikov that very question, and he emphatically denied it. But I think he was lying. The Red Army had to have a lot of captured arms, and they picked this clever peasant to be the one to "invent" the commie gun (AK-47) that has terrorized the world for 60 years. The Russkis have done a lot of clever things over the years, but they are also huge copy cats. The MI-4 bomber was an exact duplicate of a captured B-29.

433 The StG-44 was more complicated and more expensive to make (from German arms manufacture). Think of an FNL along these lines, or an H&K. Ivan made a more primitive, robust and simple autorifle in the AK-47, which made it easier to make and distribute to poorly trained troops and assorted criminals all over the world. If Kalashinkov really did "invent" anything, he simply loosened a lot of the tolerances from the StG-44 to the AK-47.

472 Any invention can be used for good or evil. Sometimes the inventors can be a little naive about the possible uses to which their inventions can be put. I don't know whether this is true or an urban legend, but supposedly the inventor of the Gatling gun believed that it could reduce casualties, since a single soldier could have the firepower of dozens. Therefore, fewer soldiers would be necessary on the battle lines, hence fewer casualties. In hindsight, that rates a double facepalm.

487 The Hickster @ 476 StG-44: many more parts, more complicated. AK-47: same concept, similar shape, fewer parts, Simplified to be mass produced. Conclusion: Somebody did a lot of work in copying and simplifying the StG-44 and making the AK-47. Kalashnikov was chosen to play this part as a Hero of the Soviet Union, so show how a modest everyday Soviet peasant-soldier could equal the engineering abilities of the 3rd Reich. Uh-huh.

488 But if there were no AK what would there be? Why a refined stg44?>>

Kalashnikov was a Tanker and likely exposed to a STG 44 near the end of the war. So that is why IMO the AK is the unrefined version STG 44.

I always forget the way the Soviet union was run and assume inventors are the actual inventor even if the tech was essentially stolen or re-purposed.

494 Thanks for the post Ace. It was not a waste of my time as I took the time to read the French as well. I've noticed that I can't speak it anymore, can't really write it any more but I can still read a bit. Funny how that works. Sort of like multiple choice. Anyway I had read elsewhere that he expressed NO remorse so now I know the truth.

I believe the commies admitted they found a prototype of the StG 44 and immediately started to develop their own version of it.

StG-44: many more parts, more complicated.

AK-47: same concept, similar shape, fewer parts, Simplified to be mass produced.

The Germans tended to over engineer a lot of their weapons and vehicles. The commies built everything easily and cheaply.

499 So the Russians would have developed some cheap stg clone without Mikhail?
