The media seems entirely unwilling to even confess the possibility that being dragooned into actual participation in a gay marriage might be fairly characterized as impinging on someone's religious faith.

The Washington Post has it all figured out:

Let's be honest: The media likes gays and hates religious people, and they're eager to frame their reportage based on these preferences.

And then they'll mock the religious for believing themselves to be under siege and attacked and demeaned by the media and other important transmitters of cultural power (including, firstly, the government).

They'll call them paranoid for believing such a crazy thing.

In one of the test cases for the gay wedding cakes things, the baker and the gay customer had had a long and friendly business relationship, where she sold him all types of cakes and cookies and such. She was just uncomfortable about being part of a wedding ceremony, so declined. I don't know what happened between then and the filing of the lawsuit, but it was not an out and out bigotry that motivated the baker.

If we, supposing we were a baker, were approached by someone and asked to bake their wedding cake, if we are not aware that it is to be used for what we Christians consider a sinful lifestyle, we should go ahead and do it, but if we are told that it is for a gay wedding, we must not. If, by our actions, or lack of them, we cause someone to sin, we have violated our Christian precepts and must repent. The 'love of others' that I hear bandied about everywhere does not trump the Bible's #1 requirement not to sin. Hope this helps!

269 Getting the gov. out of the marriage business sounds lovely, but one needs to realize the ramifications of such a move. The gov. is involved because it is what makes laws concerning the family. Laws covering marital assets, inheritance, divorce, child support, alimony etc. have all been developed over the centuries because of a need to provide for minor children and for most of that time, for women who had no other means of income or shelter. (check out what happens to women in Afghanistan, etc. who have no outside work and their husband is killed....) I know many of you say, well, go to a lawyer before you are married and get a contract drawn up. You still have to have laws on the books that support of deny claims made against a contract. And for the "poor" who wish to get married. Gee, I guess the state would have to cover some kind of contract for them. Wait, don't we have that already, called "family law"? Do we really want to throw all of that out so that we can get the "government" out of the marriage business?

The Hemingway article is great! I honestly did not know that the federal RFRA was a response to the Indian peyote decision by the Supreme Court. I only vaguely remember that. Would be very good for Republicans discussing this to remind people that Chuck Schumer was an original sponsor of RFRA.

So, I have a dumb question, does any state really need to legislate on this? Can't anyone invoke the federal RFRA as a defense, even in a state anti-discrimination suit?

281 Oh, yes that's the Anglican Church. That's a bit different, I suppose because technically it's a state church. One of the men commented, "I can't have my perfect wedding". Perhaps he had some religious feeling behind it but the sense I got was that he wanted the beautiful little church setting. I don't want to marry people who happen to be straight who have no connection with the church or any church and who aren't Christian who waited until a month before their service and then just called the church because they heard how lovely it was.

Marriage redefinition (this is the only accurate term for this topic) really showcases the degradation and collapse of the country. No, I do not refer to the issue of marriage redefinition itself - that is ultimately a cultural question, to which I am supremely indifferent.

I refer to the collapse of the rule of law. Look at the idiocy and histrionics of the district judge in the Prop 8 decision. See also the similar nonsense (with Kennedy, as often, standing out for his arrogance and cluelessness) from SCOTUS. And of course the sweet, sweet "standing" shell game. And these absurd, Soviet-like bakery/florist cases.

Bigotry, arrogance, lawlessness have successfully hijacked the country. Those qualities are on full, destructive display in the marriage redefinition case. The crude, Third World-like thuggery and lawlessness are of course on prominent display in other areas - amnesty and immigration lawlessness, mau-mau'ing bank executives or oil executives, race-baiting by the "president", expropriating senior debt-holders of GM/Chrysler, etc. But they're all of a piece.

So yes, those who go along with the absurd lawlessness and bigotry of the marriage redefinition juggernaut are just as un-American, pernicious, and beneath contempt as the vermin behind all these other disgraceful situations.

One needs deep pockets or needs to be a test case for an interested deep pocketed legal group. Apparently the ACLU wasn't interested in this case, and the baker simply closed their public presence and went to a home based bakery. Which apparently isn't covered by this law...yet.

I warned these morons for years on various sites where so called "conservatives" kept refusing to see what was coming. With the help of certain libertarians and mod GOPers and such, sane people that just want to be left alone even are finding what they get in return for playing nice.

Leftists want this agenda on child friendly TV channels even. Look at the Fine Bros popular YouTube vids with kids speaking out, where they edit and try to get young kids to accept "gay marriage" etc. and to speak like progressive parrots. Proggies want it literally taught in schools, to ensure future generations accept homosexuality as being super-normal. With sensitivity training, too.

Yet go to Hedgehog Report and the mod repubs there will tell you "we need to stop talking about social issues, so we can win more elections" etc.

We got into this mess by NOT fighting full throat the cultural war 24-7 in all arenas. We did not lose by having so-cons; we lost by not staying united with messaged against this crap and the plans of the left exposed and attacked. We lost by not taking things as seriously and without compromise as Russia did over the homosexual propaganda to children being knocked cold. Once it infects, it's too late.
