Moody's Downgrades US Credit Rating Over... Obamacare
— Ace

Their balance sheets are unpredictable, because Obama can change the law (and how much the government will have to bailout insurers, and how much they will be bailed out) per his whim.

From the Washington Times.

The private credit rating agency said potential fallout from the Affordable Care Act’s implementation — including changes to the individual market and the impact of the law’s “employer mandate” on commercial group plans in January 2015 — presents the greatest challenge to health insurers’ credit profile. Lower reimbursement rates among Medicare Advantage plans also are creating financial pressure, it said.
“While all of these issues had been on our radar screen as we approached 2014, a new development and a key factor for the change in outlook is the unstable and evolving regulatory environment under which the sector is operating,” Moody's said. “Notably, new regulations and presidential announcements over the last several months with respect to the ACA have imposed operational changes well after product and pricing decisions had been finalized.”

AllahPundit jokes that it's time for the Treasury Secretary to make a threatening phone call to Moody's.

Except that's not a joke, is it?

Corrected: I had to correct the headline and the body of the story.

I would explain what the correction was, but it would be far too embarrassing.

It's at junk status as far as I am concerned.   Here's a comment from Richard Fisher of the     Dallas Fed. (paraphrased)

"in 1937, at the height of the depression, excess reserves held in Federal Reserve Banks amounted to 41% of the money supply.  At the end of 2013, excess reserves amount to    over 60% of the money supply.  We are in uncharted territory."

Excess reserves are money that is witheld from the economy to keep velocity at an acceptable level.  They are normally added back into the economy during periods of growth, so that tells you something about where we are currently.

89 A former high-ranking San Francisco government employee convicted of felony possession of child pornography will continue to receive his government pension because, according to city regulations, evidence of “moral turpitude” is required to revoke a pension yet viewing violent kiddie porn does not qualify as moral turpitude. As reported here in the Tatler, Larry Brinkin, a prominent San Francisco Human Rights Commissioner and nationally known gay rights advocate, was arrested in 2012 for possessing and possibly distributing videos and images of babies being raped by adult men. Because of Brinkin’s “iconic” stature in the community as the person who pioneered “domestic partnership” laws nationwide, supporters at the time accused the police of framing him with false charges. [...] But the scandal didn’t end there. A recent law defining which type of actions count as “moral turpitude” required to nullify municipal pension benefits does not include sex crimes involving children, and only refers to financial crimes: I fuckin hate liberals

111 98 Police in suburban Atlanta have sworn out a warrant on a lunchlady believed to have embezzled $500 a day for a minimum of 5 years. Apparently her scheme was she set up another cashier's cart where she "sold" items a la carte. She pocketed this money. I'm shocked the vendor didn't catch this. Were the lunch ladies claiming all that missing food was "spoilage" or something? --- There was apparently no recordkeeping going on AT ALL. Not really a surprise, though, as a lot of schools have a very loose ship when it comes to record-keeping. Mainly Historically Black Colleges and Universities, like Grambling. The Legislative Auditor for Louisiana once went to do an audit of Grambling. Their report said "I cannot do an audit of Grambling because there is no accounting being done at all."

117 That Homomantium must be pretty powerful armor. And he continues to get his pension. Knox said he did not believe Brinkin’s city pension would be affected by the plea because his conviction doesn’t fall under “moral turpitude.” WZ

126 Greater corruption was extremely predictable from the ever rising Diversity in America. People who don't have much in common tend not to trust each and tend to tolerate more corruption. They believe all of the other people are screwing their people over so their people should do some screwing over, too. 241 Sorry but I agree with soona. It is nothing more than a corrupt government grant clothed in Inconvenient Truth clothing. Public utilities and private/public consortiums are already researching alternative energy and have been for decades. Giving a few hundred million taxpayer smackers to a company run by political backers and supporters when said company either does not need the money or is already about to go tits up is pure payola. Posted by: Daybrother at January 23, 2014 04:11 PM (tJvR2) Yeah, but, that's so obvious. To me, that was a give. What you don't believe (or, so it seems, because this is what I was pointing out) is that there are people out there that truly believe this stuff. Hence, act on it. I know many. Obsessed with recycling, etc. Obsessed with wind farming. Obsessed with solar panels. Obsessed with wearing canvas shoes. Even though Al Gore admitted he lied in The Inconvenient Truth - many still believe it all. It doesn't matter. Even people you would think would see the big picture don't see it the way you are I do. It's that simple. The green industry is a religious outlet to many. We don't disagree on the basic premise. Of course there is cronyism and money laundering to specific groups (including the GOP). Good God, Solyndra... And, by the way. I think we need to clean up the oceans, and keep chemicals out of our water supplies, etc. There is always a balance. I want fresh air to breath. I want clean rivers to fish in... And, the solar panels are doing wonders in some parts of Arizona. Whole parking lots (for particular hospitals, for e.g.) are covered with the solar panels, and feeding energy out. Some of it works. But, Kyoto? No.

No solar panel generates enough electricity to pay for itself.  (I don't know if China solar panel makers would survive if all US government money was cut out of solar energy so I limited that to US makers.)  Before the panels start to pay for themselves,  they need to be replaced.  The only reason you see solar panels and wind farms is government money.  It's even the same with tankless water heaters for your home.  When they start to save you some money,  they need to be replaced.  You're just paying up front for your hot water.

A credit rating agency walks into a bar  and orders a beer.

The credit rating agency replies,  " Its nothing.  I'm  just  Moody"

Posted by: boulder toilet hobo at January 23, 2014 02:23 PM (OEuV/)

361 Seems like carriers ought to consider going offshore and offer HC financing and insurance over the internet without regards any particular state boundaries or regulations.

For the typical coverage, offer a different sort of plan.  Assume you have a dooflicky surgery that the average cost is 1000, instead of offering to pay 80% of the dooflickly, pay $800 dollars for the dooflicky, no matter where you get it done (in or out of the US).

If you can find the care for less than $800, you pocket the left over.  If you go to a boutique clinic that charges in the $1500, you pay $700.   If you go to a clinic that charges the $1000 average, you pay $200.

Personally, in a free market for health care, I'd be looking for some sort of HSA catastrophic plan that self adjusted according to the size of my HSA.  If I save up $20,000 in my HSA by good health and financial practices, I might be fine with a $10,000 deductible... and a catastrophic coverage that would be much less than a $2000 Catastrophic plan -- you know, just like auto insurance comes with savings for higher deductible plans...

Market forces, when freed from gubermint nonsense regulations and without crony political deals with carriers to negotiate bloated fees with providers, will end up stabilizing and adding common sense to the health care marketplace.

Ideally, if something like bitcoin were stable, one might figure out how to offer such HC financing/insurance internationally.  It might not take long before folks looking for quality care start bailing on their various failing and cumbersome gubermint HC systems and go back to the marketplace for HC financing.
