Morning Quick Hits
— DrewM

I talked to Ace about experimenting with this...a post with 2 or 3 stories in it. They are interesting but may not be worth a full post (or I just don't have time to do a full one).

1- The Next ObamaCare Problem: Over/Under estimating your subsidy level.

We've talked about this several times on the podcast. If you get a subsidy from the government for an ObamaCare policy, it's based on your income. But if your income changes or you're a freelancer who has no clue what your income is from quarter to quarter, let alone over the year, you could wind up with too much or too little of a subsidy.

If you underestimate your income, you might owe a bunch of money at the end of the year.

Fun surprises courtesy of the Democrats.

2. Liberals Continue To Be Dismayed People Won't Let Elites Run Their Lives.

Liberals want you to drive small, expensive, crappy cars in order to save Gaia. People who actually buy cars on the other hand want Big Ass American Horse Power(tm) that make Gaia and Al Gore cry.

Try as they might, people insist on making their own choices.

This is why at the end of the left's road is always state violence. People won't give up their freedom or their possessions willingly. They will have to be taken from them by force.

Note: I'm not saying American liberals are about to set up concentration camps. I'm saying that there's a reason happy talk from socialists and communists always wind up in a massive body count.

3. Why The GOP Establishment Might Lose: Money.

Team GOP loves to harp on the fundraising efforts of conservative insurgents as a means to deligitimize them...that funding stream is a threat to party leaders and big money donors with vested interests in a compliant rightwing of the GOP.

It's funny how so many Republicans sound like liberals railing about the danger of money in politics when the money isn't going to them. To hear them harp on about it you'd think Ted Cruz and Jim DeMint invented political fundraising or something.

14 Concerning big assed cars: after living/driving in Saudi Arabia, we noticed something-in all of the horrific accidents, and there were many come Friday and Saturday mornings (the weekend was Thursday/Friday) the big car won. Or at least, the people in the big car were more likely to walk or limp away, whereas the people in the small car were being mourned. I may be extrapolating here, but could the left's obsession with population control be a driving force (no pun intended) with their driving recommendations as well as their healthcare push?

39 In re story 2, its a great insight. My loving aunt, die-hard liberal that she is, wants the draft to return so the poor and stupid don't have to fight all the wars. Facts don't disturb this mistaken belief, facts like the Defense Department review that says the current fighting military is the best educated, most diverse ever and even dominated by the middle class. An acquaintance recently tried to join the Marines, and leave a high paying banking job to go to OCS, and they wouldn't take him as (being 26 years old) they figure he is now "too old". The military has their pick of great candidates right now, and yet the liberals are so wedded to state compulsion that they can't restrain themselves from calling for a draft. The left loves government force. It's their core belief, and underlies all of their politics.

We had the same salesman, who told me the story when I had the car in for service. I bought mine first.

According to the committee's findings, the State Department and U.S. Intelligence agencies should share some blame for not doing more to prevent the deadly attacks, which left four Americans dead. In a statement, the Intelligence Committee concluded: The attacks were preventable, based on extensive intelligence reporting on the terrorist activity in Libya—to include prior threats and attacks against Western targets—and given the known security shortfalls at the U.S. Mission. http://www.thewire.com/politics/2014/01/senate- report-concludes-benghazi-attacks-were-preventable/357038/

I'll respond this way...

Shortly after the Sandy Hook shooting, I got to hear otherwise "reasonable" people in my circle agitate for having the military go door-to-door and confiscate any guns they find.  When I suggested that at least a significant minority of gun owners (not counting former Guns and Ammo editors) viewed gun ownership as an inviolable human right and would very likely resist, the answer was that it would be good that they would be killed  in the course of this action.

These aren't wacko bird type people either.

169 The ObamaCare thing is really scary if you think about it for very long. In essence, it means you can either pay more for your premiums now (probably enough more that you can't afford them), or you can pay up in more premium and "penalties" later. Hmmm... which particular poison to choose?

"And I'm appalled that so many Senators cannot admit the simple reality: we are still in the middle of a jobs crisis. People have been looking for work for months or even years. Many are starting to give up entirely. Young people are beginning to think that there isn't a future out there for them. Long-term unemployment isn't just about money; it's also about losing hope."

Go tell that to King Barky, pin head. Ask him when they can start building that pipeline, you know, the one that every day is supposed to carry 800,000 gallons of rocks. Or why the EPA wants to throw people out of work in order to save us from non-existance global warming.

It's a year old by then. What if I make big bucks but my wife doesn't work, or makes very little? Should we file separately so she gets a big subsidy? Should we divorce for healthcare purposes? What a Charlie Foxtrot.

These aren't wacko bird type people either.

.

.

.This was openly stated by more than one Politician in Connecticut right after the murders.  We lived in CT at that time, and let me tell you it was a very ugly mood, because it happened to rich people, not to inner city kids.   It's as if the nightly gang killings all over the State didn't mean something to most Politicians, but when it happened to millionaires kids, they swarmed to get in laws without adequate reviews and to get sound bites all over TV.

If that school shooting had happened in some other part of the State like Hartford or New Haven CT would not have all of those new guns laws, nor would the School have been demolished in record breaking time.  It was all about money.

195 I don't have the numbers, but I've heard that up to 80% of postal workers go on disability (back injuries) instead of retiring. The disability pays more than the retirement --- Sounds like a similar problem which is a minor epidemic for plant workers in Louisiana. Someone who gets a certain amount of time in, vesting their status, starts calling in with BS injuries because they're now eligible for disability which pays a good amount for the rest of their life. The company isn't really in a position to be able to fight it for various reasons, so they rubber-room those particular individuals until everything goes through for them to get their retirement. The story I got, between the lines, from a plant worker was that minorities made up a high number of the people doing this and that organizations like the NAACP would come down hard on the plants for cracking down on this horseshit.

231 FAWWWWCKKK TMZ, the Hollywood gossip site, has this today. The United States military is conducting a formal investigation into American soldiers burning the dead bodies of what appear to be Iraqi insurgents. TMZ obtained 41 pictures that we're told were shot in Fallujah in 2004. Two pictures show a Marine appearing to pour gasoline or some other flammable on the remains of what officials believe are 2 insurgents. Two other photos show the bodies on fire. You then see charred remains. Another photo shows a Marine crouched down next to a dead body and mugging for the camera. Still another pic shows a Marine rifling through the pocket of the pants on a corpse. We have not included all of the photos. Many are just too gruesome. There are well over a dozen bodies in the pics and some are covered with flies and one is being eaten by a dog. We turned them all over to the Pentagon last week, and a Pentagon official tells us the pics have triggered a Marine Corps investigation. We're told U.S. Central Command -- the organization in charge of military operations in the Middle East -- also reviewed the photos

233 130. "...but the ones I'm wary of are the others who enjoy a bit of the odd ultraviolence."

You mean like the 1960's and 70's, with the bombings of the Pentagon, police stations, etc?  The Bill Ayers types?  They were mealy-mouth pretzel-thin milktoast cowards who didn't have the guts to face their "aggressors".

Think about how far these modern revolutionaries have devolved from true patriots who fought in the Revolutionary War.  Those men fought in blizzards without shoes. They watched their homes burn down. They starved and slept in leaky tents.  You think some tenured woman-studies professor is going to fight under those conditions?

The "revolutionists" of the 60's and 70's were phonies, and the country knew it.Their cumulative effect was to swing the country away from their cause and vote for establishment types like Nixon and Reagan.

The only way the left can set up concentration camps in this country is if people willingly turn in their guns - all of them.

246 You mean like the 1960's and 70's, with the bombings of the Pentagon, police stations, etc? The Bill Ayers types? They were mealy-mouth pretzel-thin milktoast cowards who didn't have the guts to face their "aggressors".

Those aren't the only ones.  I'm talking about the much more militant types who know their way around guns and explosives or whatever other weapons of mass destruction.

Seems like a stretch, yes. However, if you listen to the current ugliness of the pro-abortion crowd it doesn't seem like it would be too much of a leap. People who aren't even all that strident seem to have no problem saying that an imperfect child (downs or other congenital defects) is better off dead, should have been aborted, etc.. In other countries it's already become acceptable for doctors to euthanize these babies post-birth (Gronningen protocol).

US newspapers editorialized about the need for Americans to donate money to the Fascists. I have clippings at home. 401 Re The barrel. It is my understanding that the barrel is actually one of those giant old wine casks. It was discovered in the remnants of a bombed-out Chateau during the aftermath of WWI. The thing was surreptitiously spirited out of France by a scheming group of Doughboys intent on starting a winery back in the States. Sadly, it was discovered to have been used as a latrine by the Bosh, apparently many having suffered from chronic diarrhea. The thing was slated to be burned, but was instead loaded aboard a New Jersey garbage scow and dumped at sea. It floated ashore at Manhattan about 10 years ago, and was immediately salvaged by an opportunistic moron whose name cannot be spoken. Ever since, it has been the repository of careless posters. But, that's just the story that I heard.

10 seconds - a walk to my home office.

But I've spent years commuting on the Mass Pike when I lived outside of Boston, and more when I lived in N. VA where I first had to commute into DC (a daily CF), and then later on rt66 (many wasted hours simply because there are too many people using the same roads - no accident necessary for a standstill). I hope I never have to commute like that again!

Springtime for Hitler and Germany

Come on Germans, go into your dance.

Are ve not der supermen?  Aryan pure supermen?

434 I prefer "neo-feudalists" but the concept is the same.

I also prefer it (I think you and I were among the first to use it regularly here) but as has been noted there's nothing really new about it - it's feudalism the same as it ever was.  Then again, there's nothing really new about neo-Naziism or neo-paganism either.

436 My dad had a 50-minute commute every morning. Not traffic, though, we lived out in the middle of nowhere and he worked in Muskegon, MI (Shaw-Walker, if anyone remembers it). Later, we moved to the “city” (a tiny town about 30 miles away from Muskegon) and his commute dropped to 45 minutes. I should ask why we never moved closer, since there is a lot of open land between where we lived and where he worked. Meanwhile, I’ve been bicycling the 4 miles between where I live and where I work. And in a few weeks, won’t even be doing that.

511 Capitalist dystopia. Because that has totally happened outside of the movies. Okay, let's put the flippant "cognitive dissonance," and Mel Brooks answers aside. WHY would anyone posit a "Capitalist dystopia?" Capitalism has saved & bettered more human lives than any other economic system in history. It is highly fault-tolerant and self-correcting. It objectively distributes goods more "equitably" than Socialism or Communism ever have (at least, once you get past groups of about 50 people). So how do you get to "Capitalist dystopia" without realizing that it would really be a Fascistic dystopia?

525 Ok AllenG, Basically slather your daughter head in Cetaphil cleanser and comb out the nits with a lice comb rinsing in a bowl of hot water in between passes. If you can get her to sleep with the cetaphil on her head covered in a shower cap that will work too. Non-toxic, so it can be repeated as need without worry. Lice can't live over 24 hours without a live host. Everything else just vacuum or wash and dry at high temp.

526 I never knew how so many people in Sunnydale could die and no one notice. Actually, Joss discusses that. He calls it the "conspiracy of silence," and points out that people *do* notice. Many of them move away as soon as they do, and the others just try to "stay small" so whatever big-bad doesn't happen to them. Note that people FROM Sunnydale rarely freak that "That was a Vampire!" and more frequently freak that "That Vampire just tried to kill me!"

Snow White and the Huntsman was one of the worst films I have seen in a long time. Her acting was horrible; combine that with trying to poorly, blatantly rip off better fantasy films (Mononoke, etc) and it was utter dreck. Chris Hemsworth striding around all manly could not even save it.

The entertaining part being that approximately nobody who bought the album knew it was anti-American until he tried to make Reagan stop using it.  Dude was singing almost as marble-mouthed as Kurt Cobain at times.

539 So how do you get to "Capitalist dystopia" without realizing that it would really be a Fascistic dystopia? Easy for a leftist. Everything is oppressor vs oppressed. With capitalism one is allowed to accumulate wealth. They assume that by accumulating wealth you have taken it from others (the pie is static). Once you have more wealth, and others have less, you are an oppressor. You work together with other oppressors (Corporations are evil) to accumulate more wealth and maintain your position. Viola, capitalist dystopia.

Her - stupid hipster bullshit about people falling in love with computers. Not nearly as creative as it thinks it is, but it does have a hot Scar Jo simulated orgasm (sound only, so don't get too excited).

Secret Life of Walter Smitty - stupid wish fulfillment bullshit. It's like a comic book movie for adults, only without the awesome comic book heroes. Also in the negative column is Sean Penn as some sort of thoughtful, elusive photographer.

American Hustle - amusing, but not all that deep. Could have used a more thought-out/intricate scam, but Amy Adams sideboob makes it worthwhile. Not enough of the Hunger Games chick.

550 Jimmy Kimmel Savages ObamaCare and Uninformed Young People Who Support It video @ newsbusters Funny. But one general lie, a delusion being popularized in order to shift real blame from those responsible (political class and the IRS) AND to in order to create an excuse for agism, for the young to hate the old for being "thieves" of youth. The young workers today are NOT the ones who've paid for the social security benefits of lifelong working force citizens now retiring. Boomers paid their own way, didn't like it, but "obeyed the law of the land" in which they were born. That politicians stole the withheld wages to spend on whatever else is the politicians fault. Whatever withholding income tax is being taken by the IRS today is as boomers experienced, being spent on other things than the retirement federal savings fund of the US citizens paying into the system. Young adults shouldn't kid themselves thinking that THEY are the ones "paying for" the social security benefits earned by Boomers, taken by force, willingly or not, withheld by the IRS federal government with is certainly to blame for not maintaining the withheld wages for the earners as the laws initially stipulated. Blame the IRS and politicians who gave our withheld wages away, pissed into the wind, for whatever blow jobs and profiteering. One more thing, though W was right to say that working citizens should have the right to opt out of social security wages being withheld by the IRS, his alternative wouldn't be much different in the end, since the Dollar and Economy will fail so totally long before the youth become the elderly in old age. RATHER, just get the federal claw off the worker's back, off our necks from strangling us, and out of our private lives and earnings. Politicians will NEVER save a damned thing they take. Hell, we're "spent" before we're born at this point. $.02

Pro tip: look up the history of three-wheeled cars. There have been dozens of them over the years, and most of them vanished into obscurity. The three-wheeler Morgan sports car being maybe the best-known exception to this rule. Many of them have been outright scams, and having skimmed the Elio website, I'd say if it ain't an outright scam, it has the stink of one. All the appeals to a "reduced Carbon footprint" and "reduced dependence upon foreign oil". Hello? The U.S.A. is net exporter of petroleum right now. You don't need to have three wheels to have a super economical car; these things have three wheels because that allows them to be licensed as motorcycles, thereby relieving them of the necessity of having all those heavy safety features, like 5 mph bumpers, air bags, and collapsible steering column that have contributed to making modern small cars such heavy little suckers.

Go find yourself an old Chevette diesel. Or a Ford Tempo diesel. Or an old Rabbit or Jetta diesel. And you can commute in comfort, with heat and/or air conditioning, get 50 mpg, and still have less money into it than buying a 3-wheel toy.

568 http://tinyurl.com/nfrbxr5 Do we really need AR-15s? Due to the recent rash of gun related crimes – in schools, movie theaters and other public places – gun control has yet again been thrust into the forefront of public debate. As an employee in the hunting department of a retail store, I have the privilege of listening to many colorful opinions on the current status of our country’s position on firearms. Obviously, many of the customers who come to my gun counter are hunters. Another large percentage of my customers are people who simply enjoy shooting as a sport. Most of these customers, whether they’re shooting game or targets, enjoy shooting semi-automatic weapons, like assault rifles, which many perceive to be currently the most threatened. Posted by: EC at January 15, 2014 12:45 PM (GQ8sn)

I'm sure somebody else here has set it straight, but Soros wasn't Hitler Youth. His father, a Jew, fled Hungary, but for some reason couldn't take young George, but left him as the ward of a family friend who was well-placed in the Hungarian Nazi movement. When the Nazis overran Hungary, this dude became one of the scavengers that scooped up Jewish property for the Nazi machine, and he took young George with him to act as a go-fer. That's about the size of it.

Don't take this as a defense of Soros; the man is filth, and apparently he enjoyed this interlude, and it informed his whole moral outlook.
