MSNBC Wants You to Know That That Hillary Document Dump Came from an "Anti-Clinton" "Rightwing" "Website"
— Ace

Update: Gabe is now live at HuffPo, answering questions about socialized law.

The Washington Free Beacon had a noteworthy scoop about "The Hillary Papers," and, as AllahPundit says, the new information itself cannot be discredited.

So what is MSNBC to do? Well, as they are unable to impeach the actual information, they will just relentlessly impeach the publisher. The below supercut was compiled by the Washington Free Beacon itself, and is amusing.

Well, it's superficially amusing. When you think about it, it's pretty alarming.

Is this what it's come down to? The media used to have at least an interest in preserving their credibility; this would serve to restrain, somewhat, their partisan and ideological leanings.

But on MSNBC -- and increasingly in all the other leftwing media as well -- they are abandoning any restraint at all.

However, some still seem willing to call out their fellow progressives for getting ridiculous about it all. Dylan Byers of Politico, for example, posted this tweet:

He's not joining in on the "right-wing" "anti-Clinton" "website" party, I'm 99% sure. He is directly quoting from Joe Klein -- Joe Klein actually says that, all those scare-quotes and all, in the article he's linking. So this seems to be Dylan Byers' offering a "Come on, dude" bit of chiding to Joe Klein.

But meanwhile, at MSNBC, the party is in high gear, led by Mistress of Ceremonies Andrea Mitchell, a real reporter, you know.

This brings up a question I've been wondering about a lot:

In the old days, we would complain about media bias. We strongly preferred an unbiased media, but as a second-best option, we often said things like, "They can be as biased as they like, as long as they admit their bias." If you inform the public of your bias, you've disclosed your conflict of interest. So that can be said to be fair disclosure.

Of course, the media is not willing to confess it has a bias. But in MSNBC's case, the bias is so brazen and ridiculous that one could say it's essentially admitted, even if they continue, when asked, to insist they are "non-partisan."

So the question presented is, "Were we right when we thought it would be better if the media just confessed their bias?"

Because, having seen what it looks like, I'm not so sure it is better. MSNBC is simply taking this as a liberation to be as crudely partisan as possible.

The partially somewhat occasionally fair segment of the MSNBC broadcast day, Morning Joe, pointed out that these papers have been available to the public in a college library for four years.  And the woman who put them there is literally a childhood friend of Hillary's who made a career of being HRC's collaborator and loyal ally.

So, yeah. Right wing hit job.  Haterz.

Since they have not admitted their bias, other outlets can (and do) continue to claim they are not biased. So they kind of get the best of both worlds. On the other hand, MSLSD does seem to have The Incredible Shrinking Viewership. So if they go far enough left, maybe they'll finally collapse and either be forced back toward the center, or just die. Or limp along in irrelevance, like Air America did for so long.

35 off topic early, but gotta mention this if no one else did: Betsy Newmark links to this from Nat Rev (remember, it's the Republican War on Women):

Massachusetts state representative Carloz Henriquez was convicted last Wednesday of assaulting a woman who refused to have sex with him and was sentenced to six months in prison. Following his conviction, the president of the New England Area Chapter (NEAC) of the NAACP, Juan Cofield, jumped to HenriquezÂ’s defense, comparing the assault on and beating of a woman to jaywalking.

“[Henriquez] was convicted of two misdemeanors — not felonies — misdemeanors, and there is no standard in the House for expulsion based on misdemeanor convictions” Cofield said on a radio show late last week. “Almost every one of us . . . commits a misdemeanor. Jaywalking is a misdemeanor. Would you have a state representative legislator expelled from the House for jaywalking?”

Cofield penned a letter on behalf of the NEAC NAACP urging House members to abstain from voting to expel Henriquez, who was nonetheless later expelled from the House by a vote of 145 to 5.

44 I think it's good. And we can, of course, refer to left-wing media outlets as "the rabidly anti-Republican X", "left-wing website Y", "viciously partisan anti-conservative Z". The ruling class media will never change due to our complaints. The best we can do is copy the propaganda techniques that they employ. I'm not say we have to be propagandists. There are left-wingers who are honest and reasonable and have productive policy conversations. They just mostly aren't in the media. But when engaging the media directly there's no reason to expect them to behave any different than they do. They aren't trying to be reasonable. They are trying to win. Mostly by demonization.

One of my favorite scenes in the whole damn run of the show. That was when Walter went full-on Heisenberg. It was so great, a transcript is in order. Loved Mike's little nod of acknowledgment. Jonathan Banks was a fucking genius on that show: Declan: Who the hell are you? Walter White: You know. You all know exactly who I am. Say my name. Declan: Do what? I don't... I don't have a damn clue who the hell you are. Walter White: Yeah, you do. I'm the cook. I'm the man who killed Gus Fring. Declan: Bullshit. Cartel got Fring. Walter White: Are you sure?     Bias, in and of itself, is not objectionable.  I doubt there has EVER been an unbiased press or media outlet.

I believe the problem arises in the bleeding of that bias from the op-ed page into the hard news reporting.

Control that, and then you have something approximating a real newspaper or media.

56 When was it, exactly, that the media was credible?  Certainly not in my lifetime.  Walter Cronkite?  nope.  Peter Jennings? not really.  Dan Rather? LOL.
We learned about yellow journalism, muckraking, and general shabby state of "news" reporting in the early 20th.  WWII brought some positive news, but most of that was gov't propaganda.  Maybe the 50s?  I don't have any examples from the 50s.
We can all think of credible reporters, but as a whole, I can't think of a time the news media didn't follow a liberal agenda.

Fox crushes in overall viewers, but it's competitive in younger viewers, and MSNBC occasionally beats them in the demo. MSNBC hasn't suffered financially from going hard left. They destroy CNN these days. Going hard left was a good business decision for MSNBC. They went from #3 to #2. They have more influence today that when they were just CNN-lite. It might be bad business for NBC as a whole and NBCNews. But MSNBC has profited from their hard-left move.

MSNBC is the worst, but the rest are pretty enthusiastically in on the fix, too. Just look at Barbara Walters. Considered a "respected journalist", and applauded as having been the 1st woman national anchor, she comes out and says - offhand! - "We thought he was going to be the Messiah" (or something like that). 89 Yes, they say "Nobody watches MSNBC anymore", but they have better ratings, IIRC, than CNN, and "nobody watches network news anymore" either. So how is it that the MFM is still contolling the conversaion? Is Jon Stewart the most powerful man in America?

97 Is Jon Stewart the most powerful man in America? Sadly- one of them. Last week Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow won their timeslot for the week in the demo (25-54). You mean the demo that largely doesn't have money anymore? I'm sorry, but I'm thinking "total viewers" is quickly becoming more important than "the demo" since it's pretty quickly becoming people 24- and 55+ who have disposable income. Well, 55+, anyway. 24- always had "disposable income" just not much of it.

If you can see who Obama is with your own eyes, there is something wrong with you.

If you have to wait for someone to tell you who these people are, there is something wrong with you.

After all of that, if you continue to insist that modern democrats are something other than what they actually are, there is something wrong with you.

If you believe that it was  only kooks and cranks who were warning about these modern democrats, even after those 'kooks and cranks' have been proven right all along, there is something wrong with you.

99 Just look at Barbara Walters. Considered a "respected journalist", and applauded as having been the 1st woman national anchor, she comes out and says - offhand! - "We thought he was going to be the Messiah" (or something like that). Nobody even THINKS to remark about how outrageously weird it is for a grown-up, much less a person in her position, to say such a thing, or to even ask her WTH, exactly, that's even supposed to MEAN!?! Wasn't she the one who wrote about Castro letting her hold his gun? In that recollection it's obvious she was about as sexually excited by that as one can be.

100 Tangentially related: After our two year FIOS contract expired they hit us with a huge price increase. The only way we could get it into our comfort range again was to drop a tier of television. Included in that tier? Not MSNBC or CNN. Nope. Fox News. Fox News should be behind a la carte cable. I would pay a little extra to have them again, but that 'tier' I dropped cost $20.00 a month.

101 First time Matthews has won his timeslot since Sept 2012 - DNC convention week. Maddow has won her timeslot for the week twice so far this year. The constant media drumbeat that only old, angry, white men watch FoxNews does seem to be a long term strategy that might work as a way for the Left to delegitimize FoxNews and ride the changing demographics of America to victory.

This is why I think mocking MMFA's declaration of victory over Fox News is missing the point.  A *huge* number of people who've never seen it assume FNC is some kind of weird illegitimate channel that makes shit up about Obama because they hate black people and makes shit up about video games because ratings.

It's very similar to how everyone who's never heard the show knows everything there is to know about Rush Limbaugh.

MSNBC is simply taking this as a liberation to be as crudely partisan as possible. ************** It is now worse. What MSNBC and CNN have reduced themselves to is-- cheerleading. What has happened in the public dialogue, discourse and Court of Public Opinion is-- the dialectic or real debate has been essentially starved. And we talk about the Electric Soma effect--the dumbing down of the American public that sits passively and excepts the wisdom of the New Elite Class in America--The Talking Heads--and isn't even exposed to a-- conflict of opinion. A struggle of ideas. It kind of brings to mind an earlier theme or hypothesis that a comfortable conflict free environment were Americans acquire things easily is also dumbing down America. Add to that a monolith of opinion with little variance being beamed into their living rooms via-- NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, etc.

177 I remember the days before we had Fox News on our local cable. The Commie Buffalo News had a great time attacking a channel no one could actually watch, since it gave them carte blanche to make false accusations against FOX. I still remember a fuckwad Commie named Jeff Simon (A TV critic, but to the Left, everything is political) saying "Next thing you know, they will stop all the pretense and just sit there and read the news wearing KKK robes." I remember thinking, how can such a horribly racist channel exist in this day and age? And with FOX's imprint on it! (Those days, FOX was synonymous with their then-new entertainment division, The Simpsons and all that.) When we finally got FOX locally, I of course discovered that the lying liars had been (gasp) lying about FOX.

Posted by: BlueStateRebel at February 11, 2014 03:36 PM (7ObY1) That was probably the night one of them declared using the word "thug" was very racist. Another on the panel agreed. That it was fact. I was pretty angry to hear that. If it's racist in particular circles of people, so be it, but to say I can't call someone a thug, because, then, I am racist, is ludicrous. What made me angry was their insistence that it was purposely racist. People were using the word thug like using the "n" word. Which is total bs. A thug is a thug.

Newspapers 100 years ago were just as biased.  There were Republican papers and Democrat papers and sometimes the editors would go on political crusades with front-page editorials every day to whip up public opinion.

"Objective journalism" is a myth.

What we can and should do is get the government out of the education business so taxpayers don't have to subsidize the tenured "journalism" professors who are drawn from the pool of "those too stupid for the English Department" and are generally flaming leftists who never worked a day as paid journalists.

Do the Dems have no one else to run against Cankles?

Let's see, any bad thing said against Baroque was raciss. Anything bad said against Auntie Mame is anti-feminism bias right wing. Am I leaving out any other excuse?

I like a recent email, a photo of Biden, that said "I am not racist, I don't like Biden, either." xoxo

So, that makes her attractive to the partisan Left. No soft center-Left pol to see here, Comrades! She's setting up for the primaries. Here's the kicker in the Beacon's piece, at the bottom:

"While thousands of Diane BlairÂ’s papers are available to the public at the University of Arkansas Library, an undisclosed number of documents remain kept in a restricted section of the archive. The Free Beacon was unable to gain access to those documents "

I'm saying I personally trust the top tier public industry data as the most reliable source of what's going on. There is even better data you can get as an industry insider -- like quarter hour breakdowns -- but I can only look at publicly available data. Not much incentive to try and convince you with TV ratings data if you just say, nah, it's all bullshit. Showing you even more ratings data probably won't help. It's not a big deal. Don't believe the TV ratings data if you don't want to. It's not my data. When I analyze an industry from the outside I try to find the most respected industry data sources. Not sure how else to understand an industry.

There was virtually no difference between the BBC, French and the Russian news services. Same as Central and South American "News". It is unusual in most of the World when you can watch or read the news and believe you have learned most of the facts. Up until 50+ years ago you could do that in America; you might have to read 5 papers a day but the facts were there somewhere--no more. There have always been Hearsts and Yellow journalism but I don't believe there has ever been such a complete emulation of State Media as practiced in failed societies abroad. It is a grim milestone.

Verizon has actually stopped expanding FiOS - towns that have it now are all that will likely ever get it, with some exceptions.  All the local governments want their graft opportunities to allow the installation, and it's a nightmare to deal with.

Thats a stupid industry stat.  FO follows a strict tyranny of money and distance.  Here, we have space, lots of space, existing systems (so less money), and more space.  Your high penetration numbers represent small, wealthy populations in close proximity.  And, I suspect they limit their "markets" to wealthy enclaves and urban settings.  The real game changer is the rapid distribution of cheap cellular service.

They don't have good ratings, but that's not really the point.

They flood the zone with the latest "scandal" (OMG Huckabee hates women!) - repeating it over, discussing it endlessly among their panels.
This gets other news orgs talking about it.
Then the NBC affiliated comedians kick in, an SNL skit or a Fallon joke.
Then MSNBC replays the skits/jokes over and over again.

This crowds out other stories and imprints the proper message on the LIV's mind: Republicans evil, Democrats good, Obama is infallible and the victim of rightwing "hate."

Posted by: D-Lamp ------------ This is certainly true and there were hundreds of millions spent actually creating and funding new media outlets and programs to fund "msm" journalists to paint Bush as the stupidest man alive long before Barack was picked. Remember the Soros funded 'grant' program to place 'journalists' in PBS and commercial stations? Remember the nets bringing their families to the Obama campaign events? It is disgraceful. I remember listening to the Russian news service which sounded like a cartoon of a post-Soviet State media and then watching the BBC and knowing virtually everything they said was also a lie and then finding out the BBC had sent campaign 'advisors' to work for Bill Clinton's and Al Gore's campaign staff. Imagine if Fox sent reporters and managers to work on a British PM campaign. I'm reminded that during the Serb War Clinton started targeting TV and Newspaper offices in bombing runs. He knew exactly what he was doing and why.

406 270 Cable cutting is all the rage.

I was out in the street yesterday with the Verizon FIOS crew while they performed microsurgery on a broken fiber optic line with a suitcase filled with stuff out of a James Bond movie. Cool stuff. But when I mentioned cable cutting to one of the crew him he stiffened. He claimed that the numbers were BS; in Verizon's case they count someone who drops the traditional copper wire as gone. In most cases they then go to fiber optic.

So like just about everything else in life, I don't know who to believe.
