NASCAR: Race Day In Fontana - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Today the Sprint Cup Series take it to the two-mile track at Fontana, California for the Auto Club 400.

A newby fan of racing I'm looking forward to seeing a race on a longer track. My initial impression is that I don't care as much for the short tracks, such as Bristol.

Speaking of Bristol, last week's race was another race against the weather with the checkered flag eventually waving Carl Edwards (Roush Fenway team) in as the winner. The race ended under the caution light, an accidental occurrence due to someone bumping into the switch in the flagstand.

I wish I had more for you but I missed most of the race because.... Neil Simon.

Here's where the chase stands thus far. If anyone would like to explain how these scores are calculated, that would be terrific because, frankly, I can't figure it out.

Here's a cute thang for the Moronettes:

And for the Morons, here's Dale Jr.'s main squeeze, Amy Reimann:

Wait until you car sick watching Watkins Glen.

Don't bother figuring out how Chase points are calculated because the formula will be changed next year.

5 I don't find the races particularly interesting to watch (except of course the crashes), but the technology, both for speed and for safety, is unbelievable. I gobble up the occasional articles about that stuff.

Don't taze me but, Go Shockers!!!!  Starting now.

It looked like the race that killed Dale Sr. yet she walked away unharmed.

10 Most Nascar fans love the short tracks and wish Nascar would go back to having more short track racing. Go watch a race at Michigan sometime and you'll understand why. Half of that race takes place with no one passing and the cars completely strung out. Like sitting next to a turnpike and watching the traffic roll by. Short tracks offer much more passing, bumping, etc. and getting in and out of pits can be an issue.

12 I've been to that complex for both nascar and for the drag's. Nice complex even though it's in a shithole city. I like joey logano, it's time for a breakout win for him. Seems he has been running up front a lot. Good young kid.

13 I actually passed on getting free tickets. (Heretic!) But I went to the Royal Purple race last year at the track, and learned I'm just not cut out for roundy-rounds. I tend to like short bursts of activity with lots of time I don't have to pay attention in between. Football and drag-racing are my cup of tea.

32 Meh, the yuppies took over in the early 2000's and I haven't cared to go back to the track since. Its a lot safer and cheaper to watch from the comfort of home. TFG and the high price of gas made it double plus unfun as well as having half the people you used to go to the races with dying off, well, I just sit at home or do other things. I started going to anything nearby back in the 80's, it ain't racing to me any more.

43 You are correct. Watching replays of that wreck, it doesn't look that bad. A lot more violent wrecks they walk away from. *** If I understand it, the violent crashes with flips and pieces flying off the car help to disperse the energy. In a crash like Sr.'s, and Danica's, all the energy is absorbed by the car and the driver. They had a camera in Danica's car during the race and, despite the optical illusion created by all the cars racing at top speed which makes the crash look like it's in slow motion, it's one helluva a violent hit. You could actually see the device hold her in place.

He said the crash caused a boom that was deafening. Remember, there were no "safer barriers" back then , rather they were cement block walls. Additionally, Earnhardt not only didn't have a Hans Device, but also insisted on an open face helmet. My understanding was his face was really busted up from hitting the steering wheel.

They are breaking track records every week...  Thespeeds being generated by 850+ hp is probably too much for the tires - there have been some wear problems last year and the first few weeks this year.

I saw Dale Sr.'s final race, where he was devoting himself to keeping other people from challenging his guys at racing the race, and doing that killed him. That's what I saw as a very amateur observer, and I commented on what I think I saw. That's not trolling. It may be ignorant of NASCAR norms and nuance, it may be completely wrong. 156 @145 Michelin, in  F1. Commenter was talking about the 400, though.

During my Big Year as a manager, my driver won an event so important that we obtained the right to buy a set of Goodyear custom race-shop tires. One failed as soon as it was put on, at road speed, and they were kind of oh-well about it. This is how you learn about the racing business. Some of the others are worse.

There were a few golden eras when makers of street tires were competing against each other for prestige in racing, and that prestige was worth plenty to them. Today, a league or formula has to kiss a lot of rubber just to get a supplier. And they fully intend to make money on the deal. That's what your other sponsors are for.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at March 23, 2014 01:06 PM (DmNpO)

171 Who has followed the gossip on tire formula changes for this year's tire? This is not a new surface, and  it is not breaking up, and it's not too hot out. At that point you start looking at (1)who chose today's tire -- and there aren't that many choices, or (2)what was the tire maker expecting that worked out differently. Sometimes this really is the fault of the person or group presenting the specs, but it's also easy for the producer to blame onto car designers, team bosses etc.

Why it reminds me of the 1950 Belgian moto GP, it does.

Posted by: Chavez the Hugo at March 23, 2014 01:25 PM (Q8vlx)

187 @177 NDH, this is the part of NASCAR that is hard to explain. Those cars are very heavy. The 6-cylinder cars of the Nationwide series often beat them on speed, depending on the track, and consistently beat them on anything that has to do with braking, steering, and road-holding. On a road course they are absolute pigs. It's all the best set-up guys can do to keep them from embarrassing themselves out there.

But, it's where American racing is right now, and that's that. Because "stock car." It sure is a good test of drivers' abilities, because the cars do not want to do what they're being asked to.

195 Makes for a very photogenic contest, though sometimes it's hard to define what the contest is. I don't want to say "luck." And other guesses get worse. But it's loud and colorful, you can tell which car is which, and people like that. As a showcase of engineering excellence, it's a little humbling -- but most people think that F1, for an example, has gone way too far in that. So here we are.

Anybody see an irony in "The Auto Club" having the name on the door, when it was the AAA that tried to outlaw motor racing?

Posted by: Stringer Davis at March 23, 2014 01:46 PM (xq1UY)

196 195 I did not know that about AAA.

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at March 23, 2014 01:50 PM (ojnk6)

197 1955/56 was a critical year for sanctioning. AAA was the US arm of FIA, and many countries declared No Mas. Major factor in GM "quitting" racing, which in its turn had an effect on how race cars are developed. No racing in Switzerland since.

It wasn't just LeMans. The dirt track miles that year were a bloodbath, and there were Congressional inquiries. Any rate, AAA took the Nader/nanny POV, did what they could to spoil everything for everybody, and now every once in a while put their name on a car or a race just to make me throw a rock at them.
