NBC Devotes 39 Paragraphs Reporting that Temp Workers Are At An All-Time High; Does Not Mention Obamacare Once As a Contributing Factor
— Ace

She almost mentions it, though.

If there's a prize for most words spent in Obamacare avoidance, NBC News's Martha C. White is definitely in the running.

White managed to burn through almost 40 paragraphs and nearly 1,600 words in a report carried at CNBC on the all-time record number of workers employed by temporary help services. But she somehow managed to completely avoid mentioning Obamacare, which used to be known as the Affordable Care Act until President Obama and his Health and Human Services regulators made 40 changes to the law originally passed by Congress, some of which directly contradict the original law's language. The closest she came was noting that using temps "lets companies avoid the cost of providing benefits like health insurance" — which has always been the case, except that health insurance is and will continue to be a lot more expensive, giving companies even more incentive to avoid adding to their own payrolls.

Obama pronounced that the "debate is over," and NBC scribbled it down furiously.

The media is definitely running their new reality-show TV arc called "Obamacare is Back!!!," and they're not going to let these little minor stories step on that very satisfying storyline.

59 The Hegelian spirit of the modern American left — manifest in pronouncements about the Living Constitution and the end of debate — is everywhere to be found. Notice, for example, how quickly Team Obama declares that those who do or say things it doesn’t like are “on the wrong side of history” or relying on 19th century methods.

That this seems to be just about the strongest condemnation Team Obama can muster (e.g., against Putin) seems laughable to conservatives. But for Hegelians the charge is pure damnation.

Hegel’s historicism is, at root, authoritarian, if not totalitarian. When you are on the wrong side of history you aren’t just mistaken, you’re the enemy of “the rational unity” — “the absolute idea.” You are part of the “ash heap of history” (to quote Trotsky), and those who are on the right side of history will be happy to escort your remains there.

Hegel inspired the worst totalitarian excesses of the 20th century. No one should be surprised at the 21st century authoritarian tendencies of HegelÂ’s ideological heirs, American Progressives, or at the excesses they would like to impose.

Sharkey and his wife are now living in Hawaii where he is currently stationed. They plan to move back into their New Port Richey home someday. But, right now they are fighting to get their house back.

They say strangers broke in, changed the locks, moved in and they refuse to leave.

"I want the people out," said Sharkey. "They're criminals living in my house."

Sharkey was shocked to find out that the Pasco County Sheriff's Office says it can't do anything about the squatters.

The atheists will bring us horrors on a scale never before seen. In the past 100 yrs they have already rivaled the entire human history of slaughter, death and misery.

120 People complain that with only temp jobs people won't be able to afford a middle class lifestyle, house in the suburbs, etc. Well, good. Single family homes are destroying the planet. Most people should life in apartments, ideally studio apartments. Also eating out is inefficient and wasteful. You'll value restaurants more when you can't afford them anyway. Best thing about apartments is it's much easier to centrally control the heating and air conditioning. In single family homes people use too much energy. Also, single family homes encourage wasteful breeding. In the cramped conditions of apartment living you rarely see people with large families. Poverty will save the planet!!

On the right commentators should refer to the media's speculation about the coming 'baby' as "presumptuous, premature assumptions about the growing in uterus 'tissue' Chelsea's now carrying as being a "Royal Baby". There are still a number of months where Chelsea could 'choose' to abort and have the tissue they are talking about chopped up, scraped and removed from Chelsea's uterus as is her protected right, a right which the potential grandparents Bill and Hillary have fought for years to protect, indeed, have had all taxpayers subsidize it is so important. In addition to getting out of prison, the other “qualifying life events” that will allow you to enroll in the exchanges before Nov. 15 include: – No longer being covered by your parents’ plan – Moving to a new area – Having a baby or adopting a child – Getting married or divorced – Losing your other health insurance – Gaining status as a member of an Indian tribe – Gaining citizenship Uninsured Americans who didn’t sign up for health coverage by April 15 will have to wait until Nov. 15 to purchase a policy, unless they’re eligible for Medicaid or CHIP. Those government-run plans for low-income people accept enrollees year-round. ??? So commit a crime and win the lottery? Not bad Not bad

Companies. Can't. Keep. People.

Why? No one wants to fukcing work!

If we have a opening for 20 people, we have to hire 40.
10 of those will fail the background check for credit. Holy shit, some of these folks have credit scores in the double digits.
Five of them will not show up for training and will drop off the face of the earth.
Five more will not make it through training because they have the raw brain power of tile grout.
Of that 20 souls left, HALF of them will work long enough to reset the old meter on jobless benefits and other free shit and they're outta here. Of the last ten, you have to watch them like a hawk because they'll spend half of an eight hour day fiddling with their ***damn phones while the call center queues are stacking up like flights at DFW.

We've constantly bitched at the temp agencies, Manpower, etc. to send us some folks who want to work and occasionally they do. You know who they are? White and black older middle class folks who were victims of the "recovery" over the last five years.

Which is to say- those who are currently receiving it will defend it to the death (most of them, anyway) while those who are instead paying for it will be forced to defend themselves against cries of "H8R!" or some such if they dare suggest, maybe, it's not working as it was sold, and maybe it needs to be scrapped. ---- I agree those who receive it will be big defenders of it, but you cannot believe it will be as popular as social security. There is zero evidence of that. Social security's popularity is built on the fact that we all pay into and will all receive something out of it. So far, that is basically what has happened, though nothing is guaranteed. Obamacare's premise is nothing like that.

By the way, SH, I'm not saying you are wrong. I hope you are not, and I am, but I think their game plan is the expectation that they won't be running on defending Obamacare in '16, and that the matter will indeed, be settled by then.

Where my pessimism comes in is that I fully expect, even if the Rs win big this year, they will be willing accomplices in the implementation, and by '16, there won't be anything regarding Obamacare on which they will be able to run.

259 @233. I did the contractor thing for a while, and the temp thing for a few months. Both were completely different, though equally horrible. For instance, the temp agency sent me to a job that said they wanted a handyman, which turned out that what they wanted an actual fully-credentialed electrician who was also a plumber. I got a call that night telling me not to bother showing up the next day, and a call from the temp agency the next day asking me why I didn't go. You can't make this up. One day's pay, and I was done with that agency. Then the contractor thing... 6 months of working every day but Sunday, 12 hours a day, for ten bucks an hour. Nice paychecks, but grueling lifestyle. Then the work dries up and you've got nothing, and if you get sick, you just have to suck it up or die. I'm back to traditional labor again, but only part-time since it's all I can get. Barely even staying fed some months, the only good ones are around the Christmas season and after taxtime.

262 Yeah being a contractor is great. No benefits, no paid holidays, no sick days, no vacation, treated like a second-class citizen in the workplace, and you have to pay self-employment tax. Plus you can be let go with little to no notice. I'm a software test contractor. Compared to the FTEs my bennies suck. But I get to leave my work at work. The FTEs are still calling each other after midnight talking about work stuff. I see emails at 2am coming from them. I also don't have to do any of the goals or job metrics stuff they do. I sit in the same building, using the same equipment, answer to the same boss. I make great money and get great experience. I'd love to be a FTE actually, but all the job listings I see for the company attract FTEs who have as much or more experience than I do.

Do you work upstairs from me? There's a call center up there, hires only Obamavoters. Turns over about 75% of their staff every two months. Helluva fashion show, and at 4:30 sharp there's a stampede to the parking lot like school letting out for the summer but with more shrieking.

The woman who runs the crappy deli was bitching the other day about their employees running up a lunch tab and not coming back to pay. Derp de derp.

I temped for years, for many different agencies. Each one gave me a W2, not a 1099. Temps tend to be employees of the temp agency, not independent contractors.

While I've only been a W2 contractor, I've worked with a lot of 1099 contractors. I assume it varies by industry.

267 But why should someone be denied a job because they have a crappy credit score? Depends on the job. Often, workers in a call-center have access to customers' financial information (including credit-card info). Someone with a low credit score is seen as a security risk. but you cannot believe it will be as popular as social security. I don't believe Social Security is as popular as Social Security. Tell you what, I'll find one of these guys with multiple credit card abandonments plus various other bills up for collections and you give him your SSN, bank account numbers, and other personal information so he can set you up for a loan. Who knows? Maybe you'll be OK.

I disagree. Social Security was very unpopular in many circles when it passed, and it was sold as pensions for orphans and widows.

The poor downtrodden, in other words.

Once it got passed, they have incrementally added to it over the years, until now essentially everyone (or as close to everyone as need be) depends on it to some extent. And if you DARE touch one iota of it, or dare to reform it, why that means you hate widows and orphans.

We'll all be Obamacarites eventually. I am 99% sure of it.

272 Oh we also have burglars using the home repair scam. They have a large truck labeled with some sort of service (plumbing, heating, etc.) and pull up in the driveway while the homeowners are at work and then break in, open the garage door, and proceed to steal as much as they can. They usually have someone watching a neighborhood for a while to get a feel for the comings and goings of the residents and then pick from there.
