NFL Draft Thread [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

Round 1 of the NFL Draft is on ESPN. Start time is 8 pm Eastern.

Predictions of the draft order abound. Here's one at CBS.

Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina's Defensive End, seems to be the consensus first pick, despite his off-field (and ON-field) antics.

Wildest draft rumor that I heard this morning on Mike & Mike is that Jerruh Jonez is thinking of drafting Manziel. (I gather this rumor may have started with Mike Mayock.)

Seems like as good a reason as any to post this:

Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders saluting their boss.

The 2014 NFL Pro Bowl cheerleader roster can be found here.

To wrap things up, follow this link for a mock-worthy video courtesy of Tom Brady's wife, Gisele Fahrvergnügen, doing a cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass." (Embedding wasn't working when I drafted this post - sorry!)

Yeah, yeah -- elbows. But the rendition is atrocious.

Here's the real thing at YouTube.

9 I want to see some wheeling and dealing, some shocking slides down the board, a few flyers taken on projected second rounders. Clowney seems sure to go first, if not he'll go second. The order and placement of the QB's is a nice subplot. I'm hoping the Patriots get either Marquise Lee or Louis Nix at the 29 spot.

16 I'll laugh if what was mentioned earlier today winds up being true. That the gay player may not even get drafted. I do doubt that though. Goodell really wants an out of the closet player and if he isn't picked up by the seventh round I'm going to bet that he starts begging teams to take him. I'll also laugh if he is drafted by the redskins.

22 Had to look up Hagemann. He sounds like a beast, I'd be fine with him. He might be available mid-second round, per the 2 mocks I saw. Possible trade down scenario.

23 Used to look forward to it, but got sick of waiting around for four hours every year only to have Belechick trade out of the first round. I'll stick with Bruins-Canadiens tonight.

352 So I'm watching Star Trek TNG, which is kind of the Star Trek I grew up. Wasn't a big fan or anything, but it was on the periphery. In episode one, the Worst Human Trait of All Time is supposedly represented by a "jingoistic" American soldier standing up to Communist dickwads. Nazi genocide? Nah. Soviet murder squads? Nah. Chinese Great Leap starvation? Nah. Cambodian slaughter of intellectuals? Nah. Americans standing against totalitarianism, that's the worst thing the human race ever did. Honestly, Rodenberry? Thanks for the big-titted sci-fi babes. I hope Satan's barbed cock is worth it, you demented fucking sack of shit.

353 >>>So how long has this draft thing been a Big Media Thing? I always figured they just called the boys up on the phone. Seems fairly new, like the last few years or no? Keeping up media hype and selling shit during the offseason. Been going on for a while now. Now they're doing more coverage of the combine and such, because baseball just doesn't move product and ad prices like football does.

354 Detroit needs to draft an economy. It tried. What productive voters were left, after the Young tyranny, voted in Dennis Archer in the late 1990s (which is when I visited). In 2001, Archer saw the political realities and gave up. Detroit cannot draft an economy on its own. It requires the state of Michigan to draft one for it. There exist electorates which cannot make choices for themselves. You don't have to like that fact, but you will very probably be making decisions for your family based on that fact

ManzielÂ’s hands measured 9 7/8 inches, bigger than both Bridgewater or Bortles and big enough to handle the football as both a thrower and runner. 393 I haven't watched a single NBA game the entire season and didn't watch any NFL last season. I used to take such interest in the major 3, but now it's like they don't exist. That's not bragging; it's kind of depressing that I could suddenly stop caring about something I used to really enjoy. Maybe it's the cyclical nature. Do you really need 3 days for a draft? Does there always have to be a phony drama, political issue (1st gay whatever), or human interest story (Dad's in jail, raised in a foster home, etc)? Does every announcer have to freak out like Marv Albert every semi-decent play or over-analyze everything to death?

It's one reason they were actually able to sign some free agents this season. BTW, they heard about the salary cap penalty the day after they made the trades for the RG3 pick. Cowboys are in salary cap hell for the next few years, and the Redskins are pretty much clean with the salary cap now.

449 The funniest year for watching the draft was a couple of years ago when iirc Gruden was driving one of the ESPN anchors (the heavy'ish set black guy whose name escapes me at the moment) absolutely batty. Dude almost blew his lid on the air. Wound up kind of pouting for part of the broadcast.

462 Interesting. Something weird is going on. Didn't the Skins get one or two big fines b/c of the "head injury protocol" or something? Posted by: Y-not at May 08, 2014 09:35 PM (zDsvJ) They got a fine for talking about it somehow. Teams get fined like that all the time in the NFL. I think because it was the Redskins, the media made a bigger deal out of it, especially with the way Shannahan liked to leak things to Adam Schefter.

650 I don't understand the Shazier pick. Steelers have been out of the playoffs for two years, have major problems on both lines, safety, CB and WR, so naturally they draft a hairless, undersized LB from The Overrated State U in the fifth-best conference in the country, and are then basically standing there saying the same things they did last year about that alleged speed rusher from Georgia. Even if you accept they go LB here, you telling me the best on their board is Shazier not Mosely? This makes no sense.

683 651 I don't understand the Shazier pick. Posted by: Blacksheep at May 08, 2014 10:33 PM (PycrB) They are old everywhere on D, and they need youth. Plus, Mosely is a 4-3 linebacker, IIRC.

796 792 @684 - Mosely is an ILB from Bama's 3-4. Shazier was an OLB at OSU but the Steelers are saying he'll play inside alongside Timmons. Still baffling to me. In any event why a LB at all given that they just cut Ryan Clark and Ike Taylor is a fossil? And the lines and WR holes? AND one place they say they're good is RB with Bell but he had 860 yards on 3.5 per carry. I watch them every week (married into it and adopted them) but I'm not buying this. Hope I'm wrong. Posted by: Blacksheep at May 08, 2014 11:10 PM (PycrB) Salary cap casualties probably. The more and more that players with huge contracts "rework" their contracts to "free up" money to sign a player just means that the team gets a bigger and longer contract from that huge contract making it an albatross around the team's neck. Romo keeps "re-doing" his contract so the Cowboys can sign some free agents, and all it has done is add money on future years that will be dead money.

797 Do you know why they invented sports? Because when we talk about religion or politics we kill each other. "Bread and circuses" I threw away the TV years ago for the same reason.

799 The Bills trading a 2015 1st first round pick to move up 5 spots is one of the dumbest things i've ever seen...
