NYC Politician Proposes Mandatory Parenting Classes for Parents; If Parents Don't Attend, Kids Won't Graduate from the 6th to the 7th Grade
— Ace

So here's the algorithm.

1. Identify some problem. In this case, sure, it's true that some parents are genuine dumbasses and are close to legally unfit to raise a child (though not actually legally unfit).

2. Propose state action and state compulsion for all to take care of this problem.

They run this algorithm for each and every "problem" they see in society. And Step 2 is always the same: We need a law; we need compulsion; we need to empower the State over citizens.

As Vonnegut said of each death in Slaughter House Five, so we too can say of each freedom newly dead: And so it goes.

14 State Sen. Diaz reminds me of one of my favorite PJ O'Rourke quotes: "Sorry [ ] for repeatedly calling you an intellectual dolt and fascist twinkie. It's nothing personal. I just think you have repulsive totalitarian inclinations and the brains of a King Charles spaniel." J.J. Sefton - you have a point. I think an awful lot of society's ills stem, ultimately, from shitty parenting. Not all but most. I think we agree that state-compelled solutions are a terrible way to help, unless you mainly want to maximize the power of the state.

15 I have long said, since I was about eight years old, that there should be a license you have to get before you can be a parent, something more than a marriage license.

I have also known since I was about eight, what that would mean.

Just face facts, there will never be a perfect world, a utopia where everything is for the best. It will never happen. Deal with it.

I get what you're saying, but consider that licensing of barbers/hairdressers is less about safety and more about putting up a barrier to entry into the market.

With a restricted supply of barbers, the prices those barbers can charge increases.  And a licensing scheme restricts the supply of barbers.

61 As if taking a class will make parents who don't give a shit enough to figure out how to be decent parents suddenly give a shit. The problem with bad parenting isn't a lack of knowledge or available training - it is not giving two hot shits about your kids, and no amount of compulsory parent training is gong to change that fact. ALso, I'll note that this is once again catering to the lowest common denominator. Punish good parents because there are bad parents, and you can't single out bad parents or it will hurt their feelings. Third, who wants to bet that this class doesn't actually teach good parenting skills, but the current, en vogue child management methods that don't work and have been discredited but won't die because they "feel" good to the right people? Dr. Spock's son killed himself because he was so messed up, and yet Spock's stuff is still widely disemminated as the "way" to raise kids. No punishment, no rules, no boundaries - all things that kids crave and MUST have in order to be healthy, well-adjusted kids.

Of course it is.   But it's done under the guise of making parents better at parenting.   Since the people who need parenting help are    generally the fuckheads who don't care about their children, it's a futile and purely statist solution to a problem that the state cannot solve and does not WANT to solve.

In this case, sure, it's true that some parents are genuine dumbasses and are close to legally unfit to raise a child (though not actually legally unfit). 2. Propose state action and state compulsion for all to take care of this problem. The one that drives me craziest here in San Francisco is: 1. A very small percentage of thoughtless people litter with the plastic bags they get from liquor stores, and the wind blows the bags around. 2. Solution: BAN ALL PLASTIC BAGS. Which is now the law. Left out of this equation is that plastic bags exist and are popular for very good reasons. So many that I won't waste your time listing them here. But we all must suffer, permanently, daily, in many aspects of our lives, because some winos litter. Because GOVERNMENT. A simpler solution would be to actually enforce the anti-littering laws, but that would be discriminatory or something. So suffer. Mr. and mrs. law-abiding American. ------------------------

They did that down here in LA County as well (my own city of Pasadena enacted it slightly sooner than the rest of the county did).  And not only did they remove the convenience of plastic bags, but there was also a large facility in the county that made these kinds of bags.  But what do the County Supervisors care about a few more added to the unemployment rolls?

Personally, I suspect that the *real* reason this nonsense went through is to appease the enviros.  There's been a big push to get people to use canvas bags instead (Pasadena forces supermarkets to charge ten cents for each paper bag you get at the supermarket) to save the environment.  But I'm guessing that the politicians thought "anti-littering" would go over better than "save the landfills".

154 A bit OT, but taxpayer school related: Want to Have Sex? Sign This Contract. Now, for the first time, this standard may be codified into law--not criminal law (as yet), but law regulating sexual assault investigations on college campuses. SB-967, a bill proposed in the California state legislature in response to the "crisis" of campus rape, would establish "affirmative consent" as the standard for disciplinary proceedings for sexual assault complaints. The bill allows that "willingness to participate" in sexual activity can be conveyed through "clear, unambiguous actions" as well as words, but also cautions that "relying solely on nonverbal communication can lead to misunderstanding." http://www.mindingthecampus.com/originals/2014/02/want_to_have_sex_sign_this_con.html Basically, this will scare men off of the campus, or, cause celibacy amongst the men and women on campus. 155 So, here's a question.

In NY, the legal age to   dropout of school is 16.      If you dropout before that you can be picked up for truancy, blah, blah, etc.

So they're talking about kids not being allowed to go   from 6th to 7th grade   if their parents don't take these four   courses, which sound like they'd be required to take once a year for, like, four years.   Right?

Are the kids retained in 6th grade?  Or do they go into a kiddie version of the infamous "Rubber Rooms," where indigent teachers go?     Or do they just not go to school?   Because if it's  the latter, I'm pretty sure the    state can pluck a kid out of a home for       excessive truancy.

Her origin story was that she was a Parenting Class teacher at a community college.  The college wanted to shut down the class because of lack of interest.  She approached some nameless politician about her problem who told her she couldn't do anything about it, she's just a "Mom in tennis shoes".  And that loon still uses that in all her ads today.  Not the part about trying to save her phoney baloney job, just the Mom in tennis shoes part.

So this suggestion, should it be implemented, will be staffed by an army of Patty Murrays.

Anyone running for office must take and pass a class on knowing their own asshole from a hole in the ground.  Passing score would be 100%.

>>>the beginning of the American Dark Ages.

I think it already is.

If you go by Pournelle's definition, where  Dark Ages are a time when we forget how to do a thing we once could and society regresses as a whole.

Like those 5th grade tests that nobody can pass. We can't even fathom 5th graders learning that kind of material, yet they did. We can't teach to that level if we try.

And we can't imagine how to have a peaceful, law-abiding society co-exist with machineguns available at hardware stores for 20 dollars and no ID necessary, but a USA like that existed, once.

Early on, when cage fighting was new, people thought some little 130lb Bruce Lee clone was going to show us all some mystical amazing moves.  Not so much.  If you're a 160lb fighter against a bunch of moderately trained guys who rush you, yer going down.

As to the sword guy, he managed to give the guard a head wound.  Even after being shot several times.

297 Y'all are looking at this the totally wrong way. 1. It is the presumed opinion of some "expert" that people don't have enough training or experience to do anything. 2. Experience is only gained from training for 1000 hours (even if that has been disproven by other experts) 3. To prevent the crisis and solve a social ill training shall be made mandatory and shall be required prior to the event. 4. The only people with authority to offer the training is the "expert" who identified the required training to solve the ill. Along with those that he trained. 5. With training when something goes wrong, it isn't the training staff nor.the training itself. Rather not enough training and we need to add more laws to mandate additional sections of training to cover every event under the sun or at least as long as the ill keeps occurring because obviously people are to stupid to apply common sense or knowledge to prevent horrible things from happening. 6. If condition 5 is satisfied then the "expert" can continue to have a job. As well as push their own social agenda to maintain their job and security as well as validate their looting of the treasurer because they are the "expert" These basics apply to the diversity friendship circle industry. The gun grabbers, the folks that want to suppress the marketplace with license and regulations, environmental groups and just about anyone who wants to be in charge but not compete in the election process. Note how it fails for example we have rules about licensed and trained drivers. Yet deaths by car are still a horrid number and a leading cause of non-natural death in this nation. We have training about sex education, but we still have a teen pregnancy rate, we have training for eating establishments but still have food borne illness breakouts that kill or injury many annually. Yet the drum beat is for more training as a cure. Not questions about if the training is effective or that the "expert" is a shill/scammer.

298 I may be a little dense, but in reading the bill's history it seems that this bill has been submitted annually to the Education committee since at least 2010. It's a stupid idea. Yes. One that won't solve the problem that they identify. But a bill that has failed to pass a number of times already.

Posted by: celtic-cat at February 21, 2014 04:05 PM (MjugG)

299 They don't think it will pass. Yet. But they just keep pushing the boundaries of "respectable" socialism further and further. E.g. they keep droning on the subways that "all packages are subject to random search by the police" Do this long enough, and the population starts thinking of a police state as the new normal The "Occupy" movement gets treated respectfully by the media and craven pols, and soon we need "a national conversation" about "income inequality" and every other idiot is hating "the 1%." They push and push for the extreme agenda, and pretty soon near-Stalinism becomes the respectable "middle way." The end product is every F ing Obama speech ever: "some sayÂ… and right wing nut jobs sayÂ… but I sayÂ…") Wash, rinse and repeat.
