Manchin claims he will vote tomorrow to repeal Obamacare, but still wants to "fix" it.

Both parties agree on many aspects of the ACA, such as pre-existing conditions not being excluded from coverage and no lifetime caps, but there are still many kinks that need to be fixed, Manchin said.

“I will vote tomorrow to repeal (the ACA), but I want to fix the problems in it.”

He said the ACA is essentially a product and the government needs to find a way to “sell it” and make their customers want to buy it.

As previously reported, the FCC is dropping its lawless plan to monitor how media companies decide to report the news. But at the same time they announce another push for more control over the media.

The Federal Communications Commission has pulled the plug on its plan to conduct an intrusive probe of newsrooms as part of a “Critical Information Needs” survey of local media markets.

However, a revised version of the survey could raise new concerns: that it will trade its now-kiboshed news questions for a demographic survey that might justify new race-based media ownership rulemaking.

“[I]n the course of FCC review and public comment, concerns were raised that some of the questions may not have been appropriate,” the FCC announced in a statement Friday...

The Critical Information Needs (CIN) survey has been a slow-burning controversy since ever since this reporter first revealed its existence in October 2013.

First Amendment supporters objected that the design of the survey would have had FCC representatives interrogating newsroom staffers about how they make coverage decisions and select (or spike) story ideas. Many commentators objected to the potential intimidation involved in such a survey.

The original plan of the survey would also have taken the FCC out of its traditional purview of regulating supposedly scarce airwaves. Because the CIN sought to discover “underserved” consumers in a variety of “media ecologies,” the survey would have included not only broadcast media but newspapers, blogs and online news.

Joel Kotkin frets that we live in an age of "downward mobility," in which the middle class is becoming increasingly proletarian. Which is bad if true, because while the middle class will tend to vote Republican, the proletarian class will tend to vote socialist.

The judge rips the government for "slow-rolling" important information -- refusing to disclose it -- in the Sherrod-Breitbart case. If the government refuses to turn over information critical to Breitbart and Larry O'Connor, then they should accept the cost of whatever judgment Sherrod might win.

Watch the AP spin Obama's unilateral assumption of all legislative and executive power as something laudable:

For Obama, a new sense of purpose in acting alone

JULIE PACE

WASHINGTON (AP) - This week, President Barack Obama promoted tougher fuel efficiency standards for trucks. He touted progress on initiatives to strengthen the U.S. patent system. And he signed an executive order intended to speed up the process for approving import or export cargo.

Welcome to Obama's self-proclaimed "year of action," where hardly a day goes by without the president and his top advisers trumpeting policy initiatives the White House is undertaking without the help of Congress.

Seems like Julia Pace misspelled "legal, constitutional authorization" as "help."

In Ventura County, California, a retired sheriff is collecting $227,000 per year as pension. He actually collets more than that ($276,000), but he says even that's not enough: He's suing for $75,000 more. But the public is finally starting to resist.

Thanks to Just the Tip, @rdbrewer4, @conartcritic, @slublog, and the rest of the Morons.

I'm knocking off early. Have a great weekend!

While I doubt it's the last we'll see of that, just the fact that someone actually thought this was a good and legal idea and brought it to (almost?) fruition is amazing.

Then again, this is the bunch that has rolled out multiple "snitch on your fellow citizen" programs, such as 'Attack Watch' and the 'Report on people misrepresenting Obamacare' web site. They're scorpions (commies), stinging is all they know how to do.

28 Cracked had an article- 4 Organizations Everyone Hates (For Stupid Reasons) http://www.cracked.com/blog/4-organizations-everyone-hates-for-stupid-reasons/ The 4 are WWE, PETA, Walmart, and FoxNews. The logic was, in a nutshell: 1) WWE. Hating WWE for having dudes in tights fake-fighting to a script is dumb if you also dig Batman and Spider-man movies. 2) PETA. Most of the super-crazy animal rights stuff is done by ALF or ELF, not PETA, who really isn't that bad. 3) Walmart. Sure Walmart is evil as fuck, but don't hate people who shop there cause they might just be poor losers who can't afford to shop anywhere decent. 4) Fox News. Sure Fox News is pure, soulless evil, but it helpfully concentrates all the fucktard right-wingers in one easily identifiable, and ignorable, place -- like the way lights at night concentrate moths and disease-carrying mosquitoes. Good old Cracked. Comedy!

87...They need to be on 401Ks like everyone else. No more taxpayer-guaranteed anything.

---------

Yep. That would be better than the way it is now.

It should be tied to the Employment Numbers for the municipality that is on the hook for paying it.

These pension and benefit packages get fluffed out during good times...when people are doing well, and the local economy is humming along.

Then, the bureaucrats do things that hurt the economy.

This causes people to lose their jobs...and there are less taxes coming in, to pay for those cushy govt pay packages.

That's why they shouldn't be immune to the pain that they cause.

If jobs die...then the govt pay packages should be cut, accordingly.

You're falling into a trap which has been laid already. To use that trope about brave cops in order to get away with huge abuses.

The term of art in Commiefornia when it comes to justifying colossal defined-benefit public pensions is not "law enforcement".

It is "public safety". Where the definition of public safety is rather expansive.

For example, _milk inspectors_ qualify in CA as "public safety" workers. Who can retire in their early fifties on six-figure annual pensions with full-ride gold-plated lifetime health insurance. Quite the racket.

Let us postulate that the memorial hall of dedicated milk inspectors who have laid down their lives in the course of their duties is pretty fucking small. As in zero. Unless one of them got fatally kicked by a cow.

Oh, and for those of you who aren't from Commiefornia, the city of Stockton has been one of the biggest municipal bankruptcies in state history.

Incredibly, the public-union troughers continue to fight for every penny they claim to be "owed" under these abusive arrangements. And if it were left up to state law, they'd probably get away with it.

However, federal law overrides. One key conservative legislative priority has to be expanding the scope and depth of the ability to nullify these bullshit labor contracts in Chapter 9 proceedings.

The Hill (07/29/10) - President Obama waded into the national race debate in an unlikely setting and with an unusual choice of words: telling daytime talk show hosts that African-Americans are “sort of a mongrel people.”

The president appeared on ABC’s morning talk show “The View” Thursday, where he talked about the forced resignation of Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod, his experience with race and his roots.

When asked about his background, which includes a black father and white
mother, Obama said of African-Americans: "We are sort of a mongrel people."

242 Speakin' of state legislatures....Missouri's has some balls: JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - An effort to nullify federal gun control laws and jail any federal agents trying to enforce them cleared the Missouri Senate Thursday, but a court challenge and another potential veto by Gov. Jay Nixon could ultimately block the legislation even if the House approves it again. Although state efforts to nullify federal laws generally have been tossed out by courts, Missouri and other states have decided to try anyway. The bill’s supporters say it’s important to protect liberties in light of potential federal regulation, such as President Barack Obama’s call last year for expanded background checks and a ban on assault weapons - the bill’s impetus. “I am proud to say that we have passed arguably one of the strongest Second Amendment protections in the country,” said sponsoring Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Washington. The Senate voted 23-10 to send Nieves‘ legislation, dubbed the “Second Amendment Preservation Act,” to the House. It would declare some federal gun laws to be null and void in Missouri. Federal agents knowingly enforcing those laws could face civil penalties and prosecution under a newly created state crime punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. http://tinyurl.com/kgwgm3v

These new Marijuana Laws are not being 'tossed out by courts', are they.

They're not even being contested.

That's what I see as the best thing about these States legalizing pot.

They are strengthening States Rights.

I doubt that that was the intent.

But that is what they're doing.

If the Feds are going to allow states to 'nullify federal laws' by legalizing pot...then they are allowing a Huge Precedent to be established.

352 From pjmedia: From the European side, the agreement was forged with a threat. Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski was caught on camera telling a protest leader, “If you don’t support this [deal] you’ll have martial law, you’ll have the army. You will all be dead.” ... (Deputy Natl Sec Adviser) Blinken claimed the vague public message the administration has been sending about its stance on Ukraine was nothing like what they were accomplishing behind the scenes. “We have been very clear, and I think that had an important impact in getting people to move,” he said. “First of all, we have already issued some visa restrictions on those who were responsible for the violence and repression. And under the law, we can’t reveal the names of the people that are on that list, but they are aware of it, and that had an impact.” So the protesters were told to take the deal or get martial law, while the govt side were told - they wouldn't get visas to travel in the USA? Yeah, I'm sure that scared them.

Margarita DeVille, here is an interesting blog on Venezuela, and the other must reads are listed on the right side of her front page.  Venezuela News and Views, Caracas Gringo, and Caracas Chronicles, etc. I read everyday now.  The funniest/scariest is Venezuela Conspiracy Theories Monitor.  It's all about what Maduro and company are telling the populace.  Really, really crazy stuff.

Anyway, they all seem to be pretty despondent that the Ukrain is getting all the news.  Not enough students killed yet, they believe. It is very, very dire there, I'm afraid.  But they keep on protesting.

Venezuela News and Views, Caracas Gringo, and Caracas Chronicles, etc. I read everyday now. The funniest/scariest is Venezuela Conspiracy Theories Monitor. It's all aboutwhat Maduro and company are telling the populace. Really, really crazy stuff. Anyway, they all seem to be pretty despondent that the Ukrain is getting all the news. 462 Well, it's easy to see that insulting the president is bad politics; it just offends too many people.

Insulting a president by unknowingly using language that could be interpreted as a racist insult is even worse, and defending someone who might have said something like that makes the defender just as guilty as the offender.

Knowingly using racist insults against the president is intolerable and knowingly defending anyone making those comments is equally beyond the limits for public discourse.

So the question yet unresolved, and requiring more debate; is criticizing the president's politics and policy racist and intolerable? That's the next step of course, and we've already been treated to such comments.

We all recognize that there are limits to free speech, just as there are limits to the right to be armed. We just need to find an acceptable compromise so we all know where those limits are and we can respect those limits.

S'mores anyone? They're pop tarts, all I have, don't have the makin's for real ones.

I have to ask what they did to rate this type of pension?  Not as in actually providing a service, but why were they allowed to game the system like this?  Not all the city/county/state employees have this inflated pension.  Why were these particular people chosen to pull the right levers to get this type of treatment?

Do they have something on someone important?  Did they now or before perform special political favors?  Did they just know someone?

What made them so special? That's the real question to ask, not just complain about the inflated pension.

494 Russia is prepared to fight a war over the Ukrainian territory of Crimea to protect the ethnic Russian population and its military base there, a senior government official has told the FT. “If Ukraine breaks apart, it will trigger a war,” the official said. “They will lose Crimea first [because] we will go in and protect [it], just as we did in Georgia.” In August 2008, Russian troops invaded Georgia after the Georgian military launched a surprise attack on the separatist region of South Ossetia in an effort to establish its dominance over the republic… However, many government officials say in private that Ukraine falls inside Russia’s sphere of influence. “We will not allow Europe and the US to take Ukraine from us. The states of the former Soviet Union, we are one family,” said a foreign policy official. “They think Russia is still as weak as in the early 1990s but we are not.”

571 Lowlands, it would require NATO having a sack and moving armor across Poland. A long way to go, even with the Poles granting permission to move forces across their territory. Additionally, we don't have any air forces in the area right now that could compete with the Russian air force. And I don't think they would respect Polish air space. Putin has already let it be known that he would like to have all the southern areas like Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, and others back under Russian control. Posted by: garghhh at February 21, 2014 08:32 PM (Z77mb)

One of the most popular ways to game the system is to take a buttload of overtime in the last year before retirement, since a lot of public pensions are based on the total compensation in the last year of work.

And that other guy in the article who cashed in something like 2400 hours of vacation/sick time. That's almost a year's worth of work, over 300 full time days. Assuming a REALLY generous vaca/sick time allocation of 160 hrs per year, that's fucking 15 years worth built up.

I may be patronizing unintentionally, but I think a lot of the focus on the president himself in the country's travails is at bottom a bit of escapism.  Every ill-advised, offensive, unconstitutional, disastrous, arrogant, lawless, or embarrassing thing he does, he does only because your neighbors, co-workers, softball team buddies, and family put him in office (twice).

A parallel bit of escapism is blaming the press - of course it is every bit as collapsed and corrupted an institution as we say, a kind of poor man's TASS or Pravda.

But just as with their votes, all those people around us are responsible for themselves.  They are responsible for not being so ignorant, or blinded by greed or self-interest or bigotry, that they would instantly recognize the absurd cartoon now presented by the media as "news".

There may be no "so what" to this observation, no specific course of action.  But it seems to me people should be a little more serious in their analysis of our situation.  It IS of our own making, specifically the making of those people around you who have made it possible.  Obama is a symptom, not a cause (and yikes, a symptom like that would send a patient to the "do not revive" or end of the triage line category).

Irongrampa and others here always stake out sincere and admirable positions that they will not give up, because "the country" is still worth saving.  Folks, that clueless brother, that Obamabot co-worker who is NPR-stupid, that tribalistic union-member team mate - THEY are the country.  Sure, there's nearly half of the country not disfigured by racism, greed, self-dealing, ignorance or a combo plate thereof.  Blogs of neccessity focus on the antics of public figures and institutions.  But that's not where the degradation starts.  A free society rots from the tail, not from the head.

How anyone could watch a minute of O'Reilly baffles me.  Complete idiot.

"intervention cards", weft-cut?  Dunno, obviously with the non-entities currently in charge, not a chance we'd do anything anyway.  But the country so beclowned itself during Iraq that I doubt event an adult in power in the near future would consider any action of any kind short of a conventional assault cross our borders.  You can't really play world power when your citizenry and political class have the mindset of Belgium or Uruguay.

Bet $10 that another 9/11 on US shores would result in barely any response.  Populace/elites are perfectly dumbed-down and childish - the economy should prosper without risk or savings, security should be free, and any icky hard stuff like war should last no more than 2 weeks and nobody should get hurt.

668 Too big? Too small? Posted by: toby928© at February 21, 2014 09:05 PM (QupBk) OK, so here's the deal. I have a Walther PK380. The size of the grip is perfect, but I think it is too light. My husband has a Beretta PX4. I love the weight of it, it fires perfectly as far as I'm concerned, but the grip is too big. So, I need to find something that has a smaller grip size but the weight of the PX4. Plus, the Walther keeps jamming, at least a round a clip. Reading some things on the internet, I'm not the only person who has experienced this problem with this particular gun. It also kicks the casings right back in my face and I just don't trust it to fire when needed. So, new pistol research will commence.

Tobacco, probably cheap pinot noir.  Sore from hockey.  Jonesin' to reload but my bulk reloads cans are fairly full.  Damn Mosin stock will probably still need a few days more of cooking in my little solar oven outside (baking out the cosmo) before I can re-shellac it (have a dye combo I'm hoping will duplicate the dark brown/red color seen on most Soviet refurbs).

728 And how did that fine specimen perform? As advertised? Do tell. Very enjoyable. The accuracy was okay. The sights that came with them were so totally not zeroed that I ended up with -8 windage and below zero on the elevation on one of them before I was on paper at 100yards. Once on target I was getting about 3-4MOA, so minute of man at 400. The mags sucked maximum. Out of 8, only 2 would reliably feed all 10 rounds every time. I will have to do some maintenance on the other 6. And by shot the crap out of them, I mean we went through 300 rounds of Bulgarian so they got good and hot. Interestingly, when hot they were stringing vertically but stayed about 3-4 horizontally the whole afternoon.

Flinching is a bad habit to get, and a pain to cure.

I spent a summer couple years back curing a young lady whose cretinous friends thought it was a fun thing to let her shoot a big old Ruger Blackhawk without warning her it was a handful.

She loves shooting, but that gun was too much for her at the time.

So we started from scratch with a .22 Colt Woodsman. With no perceptible recoil, it's a lot easier to ingrain good habits.

Anyway, after the summer we graduated to my 1911. And she handles it just fine.

It's the kind of that an agent would do to start a war the tyrant wants started.
The same with the petrol bombs and fighting with the riot police. You are giving the state an excuse to send in the Marines to restore order. You just don't do that unless it's your intention to start a war.

792 763 Someone who immigrated here of her own free will, from Korea, no less, stands in an Ivy and rants about the Imperialism of the US. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at February 21, 2014 09:45 PM (DmNpO) I had occasion, years ago, to work with some Korean electronic engineers who were on assignment with my employer. It was a time when Korean lefty street demonstrations were in the news. I asked them, just in conversation, what they thought about it. I immediately regretted bringing that up. They all blushed and looked at the ground. One of them said, "What did you think of the American street demonstrations in 1968?"

What'd you think over all?

I thought Dinesh was good. Provided a very positive view for his adoptive country, while recognizing that imperfect as it may be, no place on Earth has done and has the potential for good that we do.

But, in a way, wish it was someone like Mark Steyn up there who would've likely sliced the terrorist p.o.s. to shreds when he tried to twist an answer or just rambled with his commie bullshit.
