Odds & Ends: Updates to Unemployment, Rachel Maddow, Dog Turd Posts
— Ace

Regarding the earlier post today on the very low labor participation rate: @laurww sends this chart by Geoff exposing the "recovery" as no recovery at all.

Labor participation -- working -- drops precipitously after the housing bubble crisis, and never recovers:

fulltimeempvscivpopjan2014.gif

Easy answer to the question, Why doesn't this feel like a recovery? Because it's not.

Regarding yesterday's post on Rachel Maddow's newest false conspiracy, this one claiming the Koch Brothers are behind a law to impose drug-use tests on welfare recipients. Well, they're not. They donate to a group called the State Policy Network, as do many companies, and the SPN worked with a Florida outfit on this law. But then, one of the companies that contributes to the SPN is Comcast, Maddow's ultimate employer. So MSNBC is behind this drug-testing regime to the same extent the Koch Brothers are.

But there's new information there. Maddow wants to say the Koch Brothers are responsible for the law because they gave $40,000 to the SPN over a period of time. But the ACUL challenged that law in court -- and won.

Among the contributors to the ACLU is... the Koch Brothers. And you know how much they contributed to the ACLU, representing the other side in the drug-testing issue?

Via @theh2, try twenty million dollars, jack.

Charles and David Koch have donated some $20 million to the American Civil Liberties Union, which just won a court victory overturning a Florida law requiring the drug testing of welfare recipients.

So Maddow wants to claim the Koch Brothers are responsible for the law, due to donating $40,000 to SPN, but ignores the fact that they're even more responsible for undoing the law, by funding the ACLU to the tune of $20,000,000.

She is a nasty, dishonest Marxist true-believing hyper-ideological conspiracy theorist, and ought to be called such.

Remember the study that claimed dogs align themselves with the earth's magnetic fields when pooping? Further information on canines' sensitivity to magnetic fields -- snow-diving foxes may use them to home in on their prey.

Think about this ... an ordinary fox can stalk a mole, mouse, vole or shrew from a distance of 25 feet, which means its food is making a barely audible rustling sound, hiding almost two car lengths away. And yet our fox hurls itself into the air -- in an arc determined by the fox, the speed and trajectory of the scurrying mouse, any breezes, the thickness of the ground cover, the depth of the snow -- and somehow (how? how?), it can land straight on top of the mouse, pinning it with its forepaws or grabbing the mouse's head with its teeth.

23 And they're huge donators to PBS also. This deck-stacking crap pisses me off to no end. University Professors do the same thing. Sure, at the Junior level or so students are arguing back, but most students don't even have the tools or experience to know the counter-facts. Professors also love the "If you knew anything about this subject, as I do, you would know why your argument is invalid" formulation.

It's worse than that we're heading for Stagflation with already depression like E6 and a debauched currency.

Yellen has pledged to keep the Xerox pumping up Wall Street, the rumor mill says "she wants to be more hands on with housing and employment."  This means we now have an overtly social justice Fed boss as opposed to a mere reflexive "Keynesian" one.

What she is discussing is overtly reinflating the bubbles and she is an activist so I don't think she will let interest rates rise quick enough to try to reenergize the currency.  Obama needs the Prime Rate to stay low or he can't use his magic powers of graft cannon politics so well.  The American economy is trapped.

Sooner or later she is gonna screw shit up so bad that you will hear people like me start pining for "the calm days of Helicopter Ben Bukakke."

People sometimes ask me how I knew Ben would fail, I tell them I watched the movie in the Original Japanese.

That line was out there for Romney to use and he didn't.

@53Why in the world would they give that kind of scratch to the ACLU? And PBS, too?

-------------------

They're libertarians, not conservatives.  And while the ACLU tends to support causes that are considered leftist, it frequently seems to prefer to do so in a "make government butt out" fashion.  And that, of course, is libertarian thought.  Which is why the ACLU occasionally finds itself in situations such as helping Rush Limbaugh (when an overzealous prosecution team went after his drug use).  So while the Koch brothers probably don't agree with the ACLU's overarching goals, some of the means that the ACLU uses to achieve those goals might not be considered to be so bad.

As for PBS...  no clue.  Maybe they really like Masterpiece Theater?

"Why, what's he done?" asked the boy's daddy. "He pissed in the snow, that's what he done, right in front of my house!" But surely, there ain't no great harm in that," Bill says. "No harm!" hollered Sam. "Hell's fire, he pissed so it spelled Lucy's name, right there in the snow!" "The boy shouldn't have done that," says Bill. "But I don't see nothing so terrible bad about it." "Well, by God, I do!" yelled Sam. "There was two sets of tracks! And besides, don't you think I know my own daughter's handwriting?"

Yeah, sort of a Pyrrhic victory over Maddow with this point.
Shows (again) what a dishonest hack she is, but it's her causes that are benefiting the most.

It's their money to spend, but how are the Koch donations to ACLU and PBS any different than Republicans like McCain who constantly work w/ Senate Dems, who - shock of shocks - always manage to get exactly what they want with the added benefit of claiming it was "bi-partisan." See, the Kochs aren;t eeeevil, they fund the ACLU that harasses public expressions of Christianity and defends terrorists, and the Obama admin's propaganda tool. Yay for our side. Not.

113 So Lena Denham and her rage spiral about being asked about nudity on the show It's nuts. Have you seen the show? She is nude at the oddest times. She will be walking down the hallway of an apartment in a yellow fishnet top with nothing on underneath. In a public space. To meet a guy she is not having sex with, doesn't want to have sex with. It's nonsensical. Then she jumps in the bathtub with her friend whose husband just left her. They defend the nudity in the show by saying it represents the lives of real women. Says who. It'd have to be under one of the three branches. It fits best under the Executive. I don't think a new super-Executive would be good. Too much power.

The DoJ got this big during the "Public Enemies" stage.  I don't think most people can comprehend, and I can only do so as an academic exercise with a history background, how SMALL the government was in 1928.  We're talking less than 1/5th per capita.

It made sense for the President to have the Attorney General because at the time the AG's main job was coordinating suits between the states and suing states if need be with some revenue enforcement prosecutorial work.  Not perfect but very workable for a sanely sized system.  The issue came when the Civil Rights Movement and ACLU decided to morph the DoJ into an active and invasive investigatory and PERSONAL protection agency for the electorate.

DoJ is now in some ways more powerful than the United States military, Congress has no oversight if both the AG and the President are corrupt(here's looking at YOU Clinton-Reno.  The AG is not supposed to be an activist and he sure as fuck is not supposed to so overtly try to interfere with the states.  Holder gets away with it because "media."

The Democrats love closing ranks and giving their operatives defacto immunity.

184 81 @53Why in the world would they give that kind of scratch to the ACLU? And PBS, too? ------------------- They're libertarians, not conservatives. Posted by: junior at January 10, 2014 07:00 PM (UWFpX) Actually, their support for PBS is what PBS should be. If the Koch brothers want PBS to air Downton Abbey or Masterpiece Theatre or Celtic Woman (mmmm, sweet gingers), then they should fund it with their own money given freely. 185 Hey, fellow 'rons. This evening's rag had a shriek from the local loony leftist about Christie. So I put on my AtC-approved stompy boots and had at him. Tell me what you think: To the Editor: I see that the Valley’s resident crank Alex Malvers declares himself “the first LIBERAL in America to call on Chris Christie to step down as New Jersey governor.” Why, one asks? Well, screeches Malvers, because Christie’s staff apparently “held up traffic on the George Washington Bridge for political payback, which led to the death of a 91-year old woman.” Leaving aside the question of the woman’s death – as if Christie were directly responsible for it! – one has to ask Mr. Malvers why he is so selectively outraged. Where, Mr. Malvers, was your indignation at the death of US border agent Brian Terry and dozens of Mexican nationals as a direct result of the Obama administration’s “Fast and Furious” program attempting to smuggle guns across the Mexican border in a backdoor attempt to circumvent the Second Amendment? Where was your anger at the deaths of four US military personnel and our ambassador in the Benghazi attack, where Hillary Clinton slept through her “3 am wakeup call” and later sneered, “what difference” did it make? “Christie said he was ‘misled’ and didn’t know anything about it,” you puff. Sounds familiar to me – your tinplate messiah claims only to have read in the papers about the IRS deliberately targeting Tea Party organizations for invasive, illegal scrutiny. “I think he’s lying through his teeth,” you snarl, in regards to Christie. Well, I am certain Obama is lying through his teeth – just as he lied, repeatedly and deliberately, when he claimed in regards to Obamacide that “if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” So as a proud CONSERVATIVE, Mr. Malvers, let me be the first to invite you to take your hackish, phony partisan outrage and choke on it. Take the log out of your own filthy, treasonous party’s eye before complaining about the splinter in ours.

Gosh, you may be on to something there.

Have people pay cash up front out of pocket for ordinary routine medical expenses, and put away the money they save into a rainy day fund to fund extraordinary medical expenses.

Heck, people could team up together and pool their rainy day funds for those extraordinary expenses.

Yep! They throw the 'dumbest' available people at it (the project) who can maybe barely get the job done, and charge up the wazoo for it. And they always make sure their ass is covered (my employer was working as a sub to them). And Friday was the day they always had to go to their office (probably to fill out their time card - lol), which means they went back home every Thursday afternoon. In our project, we had one kid who was based in Vancouver, BC. We were in Quebec, so every Thursday he went home on a $3000 plane ticket (which was the cheapest!).

It was a big project for a big company, so they didn't blink at the cost.

An obvious gambit to bully the wavering into going on the exchanges.

How the state authorities propose to get away with this given the plain wording of the actual federal law is an interesting conundrum. But, of course, these days, what we used to call "laws" are now just whims on the part of those charged with administering and enforcing said "laws".

The Housing Implosion is what disrupted the economy the worst the minimum wage hike didn't help but without the VERY happily(for Dems) time bomb going off I think it could have weathered the hike.

Add in the wildly unpredictable nature of Obamacare and its cost sink and disruption of wage cost structure and there simply can be now recovery when President ScoamfWrench insists on trying to fix the car engine while it is moving.

A very STRONG case can be made that this entire mess is a result of ANWAR getting fucked by Harry Reid, EPA's war on new refinery capacity, the hurricanes knocking out 31% of our refining capability for 6 weeks and Helicopter Economics prior to 2009.

The high energy costs and over leveraged wage to mortgage levels for the target of the Fan/Fred bomb meant that you had a chain reaction event built in on Harry Reid's dirsuption of Anwar.

Remember when Reid said "that oil won't be ready for a decade?"

That was a lie look how quick we got the shale up and running, and hey Searchlight Strangler that was two fucking years ago!" anyway.

Think about it, if the fox could use the magnetic field as a guide, and it only worked when pointing north, (a) how would that work exactly, and (b) why would it every try when not pointing north?

272 227 178 Connecting unemployment to the debt crisis sparked by the collapse of the housing bubble seems tenuous and doesn't explain why employment has failed to recover. A better explanation is that the spike in unemployment was caused by the sharp increase in the minimum wage that hit right at the same time as the debt crisis. That's why employment hasn't recovered. Posted by: JohnJ at January 10, 2014 07:32 PM (TF/YA) Yeah? Let me ask you has Obama allowed ANY chance for the market to reestablish equilibrium and trust stability to plan for future events? The Obama adminstration is your uninvited and not so silent partner. Posted by: Sven 10077 at January 10, 2014 07:51 PM (TE35l) The housing bubble, minimum wage hike, and spike in energy prices all contributed to the implosion. My opinion is that the minimum wage hike started the slow down, the housing bubble then started to deflate, then the energy price spike in the Spring/Summer 08 really got the ball rolling. Credit then starting drying up and people had less disposable income negating the "Bush tax rebate". I think we are all 3 on the same page of the Bible, just reading different versions.

Good question.

Perhaps the valuation is high because it is in terms of anticipated inflation-bloated dollars once this slow motion train wreck actually derails.

I've never done the calculation; it's hard to remove the cascade effects of cheap money, massive reserves, and corporate buybacks - among a dozen other things.

zerohedge.com/news/2013-05-06/sp-and-without-qe
A calculation of the increase of the markets during trading days with Fed intervension (aka QE ) has it at an 81% rise 12/2008  to 1/2013.

Avg stock market increase has been what, 12% / year ?  So 81% - 60 gives you an estimate of 21% over-valuation as of 2013.

Zerohedge 05/05/2013
"While economist David Rosenberg at Gluskin Sheff believes government actions could be directly or indirectly responsible for as many as 500 points in the S&P 500, or 30% of its current valuation...

Yeah, the bailouts are a tricky one. Not that it wasn't entirely an amoral thing to do but, absent the bailouts, the consolidation of Fin/Banking industry would initially yield a contraction, but, later the kind of confidence an actual, stable recovery yields.

So it's kind of a wash there since the confidence in the Fin/Banking sector would be on more solid ground than it is today.

Read you're history. Ukrainians were a problem for the Soviets.
They took away the Ukrainians ability to farm and also took away what crops they still managed to grow.

So they starved to death. End of the problem with Ukrainians.

This is what's coming next. Along with the inability to receive adequate medical care OR being rejected for a life saving procedure because you don't qualify for it because of your age, prognosis, employment, family, politics etc etc etc. You will also be denied any opportunities to devise any other means to survive. The State will soon find a "Solution" to those that are ineligible and are starving in the streets.

Only they'll be sneaky about it. Anyone who becomes ineligible for the normal handouts for whatever reason will be offered the "opportunity" to relocate to a distant "Retraining Center" located in distant and difficult to get to locations. Behind barbed wire.

On arrival, after checking in and a brief interview to determine your intermediate status, you will be told that you will have the opportunity to rest and relax in the "Communal" sleep areas. You will of course be required for health reasons to first take a shower before being allowed into the "Communal" areas.

To save water and time, every new arrival takes their arrival shower with all their fellow arrivals in a large and pleasant coed showering area. Towels will be provided upon exit.

Don't worry about those funny looking pipes that lead in from the ceiling. Their function will soon become clear.

1) partisan non-partisan civil service that cheats at the job in partisan ways with impunity

2) media media

Likewise, there's also a hell of a lot of difference between Lena Dunham and Christina Hendricks. One is hittable and the other... well, let's just say I'd die with a smile on my face. Posted by: ScoggDog at January 10, 2014 09:12 PM (6/+vz) She is not unattractive; she can't dress her body type for crap, and thus looks dumpier than really is, but she has a pretty face and nice curves. The real problem is the personality inside; a combo of insecurity from being in Hollywood scene and superiority from being a lib. The ugliness of that leaches out and taints what good looks she does have. I still don't get how she is a feminist darling given that she wrote a rape scene into her show last year, but to each his (her? Hyr?) own.

Ours has risen dramatically in the last few years. Now we are paying over 22% of my gross income just for health insurance, almost 29% of my net income. This is w/ a deductible of $3500 and stop loss of $9000. We actually met the stop loss figure in 2011 & 2012 due to some operations. But I fail to see how we can continue on this course and we can't afford to go uncovered due to existing conditions at 57 & 58. We do have a HSA and that helps. Part of the solution to health care costs needs to be expand HSAs, tort reform and insurance across state lines. It's complicated, but not that complicated. I haven't looked at details, but Rep. Price from GA? has a good alternative from what I hear. To say there are no Rep. alternatives is a lie. they need to coalesce around something before the next elction and offer a true alternative to the mess that the AFFORDABLEhealthCareAct is (not). End of rant.

501 If you have the balls to go on a diet of roasted chicken, short grain brown rice, cabbage and broccoli liberally covered in these oils with some Bragg's Liquid Aminos for flavor you will lose weight and gain muscle mass.
Also, do not over exercise!

do you have a recipe for this?

506 @464 Good article. I have seen a variation, which follows this plan, except you only get one free day, Sunday. They call it the reset day. When I go on diet, I STOP drinking alcohol. Drink water all day. Lift at lunch and tread mill after work. I try to only eat the calories that I burn. AKA 700 Kcal on tread mill and 400 lifting, 1100. I will eat that or a little more, 500. That gives me a net deficit of 1500 Kcals a day from what I burn. Takes 3000 Kcal deficit to lose a pound, you lose a pound every two days or three a week. Oh, and you will stall. Nothing lost for a few days, then three pounds in a day. I am going to start, "tomorrow".

511 Store was practically giving away still good salmon fillets tonight, so I snagged one, cooked it and veggie medley in gluten free teriyaki glaze, mmm, served over sticky rice. But accidentally burnt one side of salmon...just pretended I meant to make blackened salmon, no one is the wiser. I think.

@192 There has been an ad blitz on the 'net for the show. May have some relevance, percolating the odious show upwards in our shared Zeitgeist.
--------------

"Really? I haven't seen a single ad. Did you read one of the various on-line articles about her today? If so, that might be why you're suddenly seeing a bunch of ads for her show."

That's a joke, right?

515 does it matter whether Koch was behind the law or not? we should be pointing out it was a great law, that trying to keep tax dollars from subsidizing drug users is a good thing.
