A student included this gif of Obama kicking down the door as a visual punchline in a listserv complaint about midterms -- that is, he used Obama kicking down the door as an exclamation point to indicate his own frustration over studying for midterms.
So, of course, he was accused of committing a "racial microaggression" and, after being put through "the process" for adjudging his guilt, he has apologized for being a racial microagressor:
“The email in question contained the phrase “Honestly midterms get out of here” followed by a URL leading to a .GIF image of President Obama violently kick a door and storming out of a room following a press conference. The inclusion of the .GIF image was intended to bring a humorous tone to the email and use President Obama’s frustration with the press conference in question to mimic the frustration students feel when confronted with midterm examinations. Despite the innocent intentions influencing my decision to use this particular image, I have come to recognize the negative implications of adding the .GIF image within this given context.(…)
Oppression, as outlined in SSMU’s Equity Policy, means the exercise of power by a group of people over another group of people with specific consideration of cultural, historical and living legacies. The image in question was an extension of the cultural, historical and living legacy surrounding people of color—particularly young men—being portrayed as violent in contemporary culture and media. By using this particular image of President Obama, I unknowingly perpetuated this living legacy and subsequently allowed a medium of SSMU’s communication to become the site of a microaggression; for this, I am deeply sorry.”

Online degrees and the elimination of tenure can't happen fast enough. Unfortunately, McGill is probably Canada's best university, so they'll be able to pull this crap for quite awhile longer.

Any time you don't treat a minority in exactly the same way you would treat a person of the majority, you're committing micro-aggressions. It's pseudo-scientific bunk for many reasons, including the fact that you're assuming a hypothetical counter-factual in each instance. Eye contact is one example I've already given. Other examples are things like your body position, if you stand in a more guarded closed way when you're near a minority, that's a "micro-aggression".

So if you want to major in an engineering related subject go to a two year community college to get all of those "social" classes and non-electives like entry level math. (make sure credits will transfer first)
Then transfer your credits to the 4 year college to get the big stuff related to your degree.

I'm not sure where the argument comes from, but I suspect it's to distinguish a single incident of racial naughtiness from all the incidents of racial naughtiness that come from being part of a racist society.
In other words, if I say mean things to you, because I am one color, and you are another, and I do not have the backing of some pre-established majority institution, I'm committing a micro-agression.
If I, as a duly appointed member of the majority, use my standing in said majority institution, commit some crime of meanness toward you, a person of color, I am committing some sort of macro-agression. Like if I deny you a seat on a bus, as a bus driver, I'm part of the institution of Big Bus. As opposed to being part of the institution of just me.

At their bi-weekly Legislative Council meeting, the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) got into a heated debate over the only motion of the night, one that proposed banning the song “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke from the Shatner building, including Gerts.
The popular song has been widely banned for promoting rape and propagating misogyny, especially through the repetition of lines such as “I know you want it” and others more explicit. The motion is not without precedent, either – several universities across the UK have banned the song from their own student union buildings.
“[This song] violates the whole idea of safe space. It’s an example of exactly what we should not accept at McGill,” said Sarah Southey, Science Undergraduate Society (SUS) Representative and one of the movers. She continued, “It’s being played five times a night at Gerts.”
VP University Affairs Joey Shea brought up concerns that the song may act as a trigger for sexual assault survivors, especially given the proximity of Gerts to the Sexual Assault Centre of the McGill StudentsÂ’ Society in the Shatner building basement.
After an hour and a half of fierce debate, the motion failed, with 7 votes in favour, 8 against, and 11 abstentions.

The local community college here in our part of the SF Bay Area mail out their (flipping huge) course catalog every six months to every household in the catchment area.
It doesn't take much perusing of the course offerings to realize that the "long march through the institutions" infected the Commiefornia community college system a LONG time ago. Going to such a two-year campus here is no guarantee whatsoever of avoiding left-wing politically correct insanity.
It's also frankly sad to see subjects which I remember as having been early high school level offerings such as Algebra I having to be offered remedially to "college" students, and from the number of sections thus offered in the catalog, it's clear that damn near all of the incoming students are having to thus bone up on things they should already have been taught.
Of course, these students came up through the same system that teaches elementary school kids about how _Heather Has Two Mommies_ before it teaches them about adding two plus two.

The normal reaction to this sort of stuff has been short circuited by the ObamaMedia.
We are a small minority that pays attention to this sort of stuff. Normal people have lives. They only see what shows up on the tube for comment.
Thus the reasoning for Ezra Klein's Journolist. He knew the American people weren't paying attention to a wide enough spectrum of information and thus could frame events the way they wished to by using only a few key outlets.
They have twisted the country into a knot and soon the only way it will be able to be released will be with violence. (could be either side)
This applies more to academia than other areas because it's also a liberal bubble that's been twisted and torgued to where black == white and good == bad because when you start lying about fundamental facts and ignore anything to the contray you begin to lie to yourself which is always destructive.

It's a cop show that takes place in LA and in 7 seasons, I don't believe it featured a single murder perpetrated by a Person of Color, except for a few pulled off by a some nasty White Hispanics. In fact, I was quite surprised to see how many roving gangs of red-headed hillbillies roam the streets of LA committing murder and mayhem.

So although I can understand their position, I don't have much respect or get too upset by their capitulation to being bullied.
How many times does the public have to applaud someone for standing up to this stuff (and they do) for those caught up in this sort of thing to realize that capitulation doesn't gain them anything.
The only ones really hurt are those who have no public imprint and don't have an article written about their plight that goes viral.
But even they could turn things around by standing up for what's right. They don't see the worth and so it continues.

in VA universities have wide discretion in behavior, honor, and speech codes and the deck gets stacked against the accused. It wasn't microagression by the university it was macroagression...expulsion, outside referral...against a graduate student.
