Oh, My: Spiders Now Constructing Decoy Spiders Out of Webs, Detritus, and Bodies of Dessicated Victims
— Ace

Via Purp in the sidebar, I am posting this because it's kind of a rule that Spider News gets mainpaged.

What the hell, man?

fakespiderdude.jpg
Not real. The real spider is a tiny little thing
you can barely see, hiding in the Decoy Spider body

The article doesn't say (unless I've missed it) why they build these decoys. The only possible reason I can imagine is that there are some cuckoo-type spiders which just steal other spiders' webs -- take them over, kill or drive out the webs' actual builder -- and so smaller spiders are making big fake Spider Decoys to warn away such webjackers.

Or, even simpler: Another spider that feeds on smaller spiders, or some other insect that does so.

Or a bird.

But I just made that up. The article provides no hint that I can see of the purpose of a Fake Spider in a web. Wouldn't a Fake Spider in a web warn away prey?

Also via Purp, the Internet of Real Life Things is probably going to allow the Hacking of Real Life Things.

Explanation: Kirk, I think, nailed it:

It's just a selfie.

Dudes always try to make themselves appear bigger than they really are in selfies.

Oh My: This is from May of 2012, but it's horrifying.

Ever see Kingdom of the Spiders? That's right, with William Shatner, when he was still struggling after the cancellation of Star Trek and doing B-movies.

The last shot of that film was a whole town covered in spider's webs. Matte painting, you know-- the height of 70s special effects. (No condescension intended; I loved matte painting shots.)

Well, this isn't quite that, but it's similar.

Look at that farm. You'd think they were actually growing spiderwebs.

Oh my Lord: I didn't notice this picture.

Content warning. It involves a dog.

The dog is unharmed. But the image is still frightening.

7 The hacking of the "Internet of Things" reminds me of the scene in I, Robot where the whole house tries to destroy Will Smith. Also, maybe the large fake spider thing is because they get tired of things ruining their webs by walking through them. Bigger animals may not see/be afraid of a little spider, but a big one? Leave it well alone.

I don't fear all snakes.  We have bull snakes that eat the rattlers (they're my buddies).  I'm a northern critter so haven't been exposed to the south eastern wetlands of our nation, and therefore can only speculate on the water moccasins, but I'm sure I'd rather face an alligator.  At least you can see him coming at you.

214 >>>That means that the decoy-building spider can count!!! <<<

I also know jobs isn't a 3 letter word, and that your insurance premiums won't go down 3000 percent.

216 >>Okay we might need to send a rescue party to explore under AlextheChick's desk...

Personally, as someone who detests spiders, I think the photo, while initially freaky, is not cause for AtC to bring the smackdown. The glee in obviously tormenting the 'Ettes, however, might be. And if you ever have a giant pic of a spider face on the site I will be AtC's right hand minion in burning all the things down

And nope, not clicking on any of the links on this post, not that stupid...

217 I'd also like to point out that means- That since spiders have mastered math and counting that makes them- smarter than TFG and 99.999% of Democrat voters. So- One, Can we give spiders the vote? and Two, maybe Christie's gut isn't full of fat but full of baby spiders....baby spiders with Presidential ambitions who can count. I for one welcome our new spider overlords.

218 ...and we have a crap ton of raptors here:  bald eagles, golden eagles, hawks of about 3 varieties, falcons, owls.

Not much moves out here on the prairie without gettin' et.

222 Kraut just said that the bill was intentionally written to destroy the relationship between employer and employee by making them force us off employer covered health care. Issue is that they did not build back end website, etc. HHS has memos & Jim Engel just reported on story, I didnÂ’t see him report it on show tonight. IÂ’ll search after itÂ’s over.

224 Unfortunately, the spiderÂ’s habitat is under immediate threat, he said. The Israeli government recently approved mining operations in the region, which could wipe out the creature. I'm not seeing a downside.

226 It's not a decoy, it's a prototype for a Mech.  They'll be driven by version IV.

227 I generally try to rescue any creature I find in my house; except spiders. Something inside me causes me to flatten spiders on sight. It must be something inherited from the caveman era. We had sipders in our previous house that grew hair and were the size of small Japanese cars. God I hate those things.

228 Did you know that there was once a fad for collecting spider webs, layering them until they form a sort of fabric, and painting pictures on them? It's true. It started somewhere in the Tyrol in the 1600s, and there are only about 100 cobweb paintings left in existence. I think I read that the Victorians tried to revive this bizarre art form too.
