One Picture Tells The Tale of Syria
— Ace

I have no political point here. I am only posting this because some photographs are so arresting. So this is one of the few times I'm saying something nice about journalists.

The Daily Mail reports:

Hundreds of men, women and children fight to get to the front of the queue as a refugee camp in Damascus receives food parcels after being cut off for months.

Today the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) called on rebel forces and Al-Assad’s troops alike to allow ‘safe and unhindered humanitarian access’ to thousands of civilians in Yarmouk, a Palestinian district in the Syrian capital.

Yarmouk has seen some of the worst fighting in the capital, leading to severe food shortages and widespread hunger.

See the below picture for as powerful a proof as imaginable that one picture is worth a thousand words.

We should always remember: It can be worse. It is worse in most of the world; it has been worse for most of human history.

That isn't a call for "moderation" in fighting for freedom and human dignity; it's just noting that most Americans should be more grateful.

Thanks to BB.

What's so bad about these people's situation? They've been liberated from their boring jobs, they're getting free food and health care from a caring international body, and look at all the shovel-ready jobs once the proper administrative documents have been approved!

Really, Mr. O'Spades, this is just the kind of utopia I and my Democratic friends in Congress, along with President Obama, are working for in our wonderful country! Can't you spare $5, $10, or $20 to bring this kind of bliss to your neighborhood soon??

Peace requires there to be a clear winner in a conflict. Our post-modern concept of warfare has enabled constant strife, rather than allow for periods of true healing and growth.

Sounds like what i always say about the Arab/Israeli wars. They should be allowed to fight it out until one side has their boot on the others throat and he says uncle.  The U.N. stepping in to prevent one side losing just sets them up for the next war.

Luckily the Arabs tend to wear sandals...

The clusters of people in the fore can be grouped together.

Look at dead center, down 2 inches, woman with clasped hands perfectly framed. Again, lucky as all hell.

Also: looking at the distant background there's a tree trunk leaning up over over the road.

Now scroll down two pictures to the one of the aid worker checking a woman's ID. Top left, that tree. Compare the scale of the tree in that pic to the Canyon of People pic. Weird.

I use Photoshop and other graphics programs throughout most of my working day (and well into evening). I don't see any evidence of  'shooping. If it helps, we know from news reports that there have been several thousands of refugees created by this war, as there are in any war. Those thousands of refugees have to go somewhere. They have to move. They have to find food. It isn't beyond credulity that a good photojournalist happened to catch them at it. Besides, I don't see a strategically placed teddy bear anywhere. There's always a child's toy of some sort in a Middle Eastern-related doctored war scene photograph. They're the Waldo of faked photographs.

Sometimes tragedies are vast and real.

The Barnabas Fund estimates that between 30 and 40 per cent of churches in Syria have been seriously damaged or completely destroyed as a result of the fighting.

Riad Jarjour, a Presbyterian pastor from Homs and former president of the Middle East Council of Churches, said: "If this continues the way it is, there will come a time when there will be no more Christians in Syria."

183 3.more.years. to even attempt to recover. Recover what, willow? I may be reading too much in your comment, but the sentiment I am going to respond to is one I see from others here and elsewhere, and that I cannot agree with. So if I'm reading you wrong, I do apologize if this sounds combative: Recover our standing in the M.E.? I'm firmly in the camp that we have zero interest in the M.E. outside of supporting Israel, and punishing terrorists and their sponsors militarily. I was on board with the Bush Doctrine, of actively supporting freedom and democracy among people ruled by tyrants. It was worth a go. That doctrine, as noble it was in concept, is a failure with these people. Yes, "these people". I'm going to generalize here, as of course, there are exceptions; but those exceptions are not even close to being a transformative presence in the culture that dominates the M.E. These people are not capable of forgiveness. These people are not intellectually curious. These people are rigidly, violently intolerent. These people do not celebrate life; rather, they consider life cheap, disposable, and merely a temporal means to the end of enslaving others in service of their God and tribal wealth. These people have not earned the freedom to participate in the civilized world. And until these people are allowed to properly be held accountable for their stone-age cultural mores, they never will be. Holding them accountable doesn't necessarily mean bombing their infrastructure to match their ideology, although I am open to that. It means we, the modern world, simply allow these cultures to stand on their own feet, and sink or swim on their own merits. I am through spending American lives and dollars in pursuit of providing something that these people simply Do. Not. Want.

201 This isn't a picture of a refugee camp that people ran to to escape a war. This is a picture of an active warzone. And many of the people in that picture are no doubt active participants on the jihadi side of the Syrian civil war. The reason the buildings are bombed out is because this "refugee" camp was used as a base to launch attacks in the Syrian Civil War. These people aren't refugees. They were born there. They grew up there. The term refugee camp is just false in this instance. Most everyone in that photo was born in one of the 4 hospitals in that camp. It's basically like a ChinaTown, it's a neighborhood in suburban Damascus where Syria herded all the Palestinians 50 years ago.

218

So I guess some of you think the picture is staged or doctored. Does that mean you don't think there's a war going on in Syria? Because usually, you know, large-scale armed conflicts cause non-combatants to move en masse away from war zones. These refugrees can number in the thousands or even tens of thousands. Is it beyond the realm of possibility, then, that someone with a camera took a picture of these refugees?

Some of you are also implying or saying outright that most or all of the people pictured are Muslims, some probably radical Muslims, and therefore undeserving of sympathy. I can't make out any kids in that picture but I see lots of women and can discern a few old people sprinkled here and there. No sympathy for them, is that right?

Maybe thinking too much about politics makes people view suffering in far-off places as an abstraction, a talking point on a news show. It sucks the humanity right out of you.

It wasn't a guarantee, though. You don't lack humanity for seeing both the suffering and the evil. 374 Define "foreseeable future". Possibles: Mid term elections not happening? Barky not leaving after 2016/2017? Neither of those two scenarios are going to happen. The chances are low enough to be considered zero. The various Apocalypse Fantasies suggesting a civil war and/or Obama refusing to leave office after 2016 sound no less insane than the loony predictions by the left that GWB was going to turn the country into an authoritarian theocracy.

History turns on a dime.

I'm still awe-struck by the process of Germany in the 19th century, going from being the center of the civilized world, with the highest standard of living, the most advanced system of law, the highest rate of education, and the source of a heavily-disproportionate number of scientific advancements and inventions, not to mention being the center of art and culture, with the most decentralized of all the governments in the Western world, whose kings were actually elected, in the span of a couple of generations ended up being reduced to abject poverty, starvation, war, genocide, and a totalitarian police state overseen by a dictator.

It can happen anywhere.

400 I'm going to say something slightly out of character, and largely out of favor As Things Are, but I'm going to lay it out there anyway. The only way their lot will get any better is if they find another way to live. Let the Lord's love into their hearts, learn to let go of and reject the hate they're taught, and start building a society that isn't doomed at the foundation. No other way. I pray the Lord turn their hearts, that I know they are no longer enemies. Beyond that, I can do nothing of worth for them...and nothing worse to them than they've done to themselves.

402 Y'all have to remember that we have bases in areas for our convenience, too. It's not all for the sole benefit of the host country. Refueling, supply logistics, trauma hospitals, ease of striking various targets on short notice, etc. I am all for shutting some down, but we benefit greatly from many of them.

My kids have many Arabic Christian friends who are freaking out over what is happening in Syria. I myself have many Eastern European friends Who have relatives in Kiev who are hunkered down in their partments waiting to see what happens. And shit is stirring in Macedonia, in Albania, in Kosovo, in Serbia. You name it.Shit is stirring here as well.

Half of pop music today is male vocalists creating vocal affectations that are supposed to make them sound unique, but really just make them sound like autotuned Muppets.

407 The Syrian Alawite govt is nothing more than a vassal regime of the Mullahs. They would be overrun by jihadis if not for Hizballah's divisions and Iranian "observers". Alawites are a TINY minority in Syria. They believe in godhood of Ali, and are considered kuffar by all Sunnis. They do fight like lions, since they know they would all be slaughtered in a case of defeat, but they would never be able to master the manpower needed without Iran and Hizballah

417 12 Years a Slave was a good movie. Yes, it portrayed Northrup as more noble than he probably was in real life, but it showed the brutality and hopelessness of slavery and how it destroyed the souls of both slave and, even more, slave owners. Gravity was a two-hour treat for a man of my tastes. Less jiggle than Kate Upton but when the 3D Blu-Ray comes out I may just move permanently to my bunker. Or is it bunk? Either one or both, I'll be there.

423 One of the more powerful and haunting photos of the Syrian war zone. How can any one of us understand the despair these poor souls must experience? I'm ashamed of my earlier complaints over a situation so petty in comparison to their suffering. The reality hammer hit this perspective home that most Americans are so damn lucky.

Posted by: I'd rather be surfin at February 26, 2014 04:36 PM (OU1Hh)

424 Photoshopped to the max.  Whenever a photo looks unreal, especially these days, it surely is.  The crowd looks composited, for effect, and the buildings behind look like they were placed there, again, for effect.  Too perfect.  I don't buy it.
