— Open Blogger Well, 'Rons n' 'Ettes, it's your friendly neighborhood Damn Dirty RINO again. I'm filling in for CDR M tonight since he came up with some cockamamie excuse about "defending the nation" or something. I don't know. But, inasmuch as he has friends who could "accidentally" drop an explosive payload on me from thousands of feet in the air at any time, I figured I ought to go ahead and do tonight's ONT. I may be lazy, but I'm not stupid.
Like everyone else, Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday of the year. It's the one holiday that seems immune to corporate exploitation, steeped as it is in Judeo-Christian tradition. And, as anyone who knows me will readily tell you, I'm all about that old-time religion. Sadly, contemporary culture seems bent on rejecting the ancient teachings of the Bible that have helped to sustain mankind for thousands of years -- particularly the verse in Peruvians 8:42, which tells us, "Honor thine life partner with baubles and sweets and flowers and cards and lavish meals and sparkling wine. Bedeck her in splendorous, yet scant garments that she may wear but once and cast aside never to be seen again. For, should thou forsake such worshipful genuflection, thine ears shall ring with vituperative hectoring forevermore."

Now, obviously, there are some personal relationships that just don't develop into anything more than friendship in spite of our best efforts. Sometimes, you can do everything right, and with the very best of heartfelt intentions, but still find yourself in what has come to be known as the Friend Zone. It can be painful and humiliating, and may even cause you to question the wisdom of following the path that leads to true love.

Yes, it's unfortunate and hurtful. But, you can't allow yourself to grow discouraged. If you can't make the object of your desires fall in love with you despite your most exorbitant investment, then it simply wasn't meant to be. The right person is out there for you; you just have to maintain faith that your paths will cross at some point down life's twisting, treacherous roads. The fact is, we all have a soul mate. But, for some of us, finding him or her requires more patience and perseverance -- and perhaps a lowering of standards and expectations.

And, if you are sufficiently persistent and generous to the person whose affections you're seeking, but that person still can't be cajoled into reciprocation, it may very well be that you need to engage in some serious introspection. It could simply be that you're not assertive enough. It's amazing how many people go through life laboring under the misapprehension that mere kindness and tenderness toward the people they love will somehow bring them around. As noted singer-songwriter Patty Smyth pointed out back in the 1980's, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," and you have to instill fear into their hearts. After all, if someone doesn't respect you, how can they ever come to love you?

One of the saddest aspects of living in the modern world is that we have allowed ourselves to become convinced that simple love has the power to "conquer all" and "move mountains". And it's because of that silly notion that people become dejected and give up hope for finding that one person with whom they can share a full and happy life. But, as someone who has fallen prey to such fantastical ideas, let me assure you that this is not the case. There are innumerable challenges and obstacles against which romantic love is of absolutely no use.

No, the only way to ensure a long-lasting and fulfilling adult relationship is to express your deepest feelings for the person with whom you wish to share your life by appealing to their base appetites.

But, there's a caveat. You see, if you make only explicit overtures toward a person's base drives, they begin to feel objectified. They don't feel loved for who they are as a person, but merely desired as an object of sexual conquest. This has a way of leaving people feeling somewhat dehumanized. So, when making such gestures in the hopes of building a lasting relationship based on deeply felt emotional ties, you have to make sure to adorn it with the soft, superficial treacle of hearts and kittens.

On the other hand, if all you seek is pure carnal indulgence, a wink, a smile, and a generous display of flesh will do the trick nearly every time. And if that's what you're looking for on this most sacred of holidays, well, I suppose you could do a lot worse.
Tonight's ONT brought to you by Soft n' Snuggly Sweater Puppies:

ADDENDUM: rdbrewer sent this over the transom shortly after I finished, so I figured I'd toss it in for those of you who may find it as interesting as I did. It's the Presidential Personality Quiz. My results said my personality most favored that of Lincoln.
And, as long as I'm adding stuff, I may as well add this in, too. I really wanted to use it earlier, but I couldn't figure out a way to incorporate it into the overall theme. But, rd gave me a good excuse to tack it on at the end, so I'm going to. It's a video of a little girl's first experience with being in the rain. It strikes me that one of the tragedies of the human condition is that it beats the sense of wonderment out of us over time.

Would be a new World Record, but the Russian judge bribed the French judge to lower the score a bit.
Still though. I think you might have won the Bronze in Embarelling. And not in the good, tasty, Bourboney way.

I used to see them in the local bars all the time. The guitar player had a little thing for me. Chased me down the freeway in his car one time after a gig. NOT lying, although I do not remember if he caught me, just wasn't important in those days.

Don't question it! I'm in my 50's. In my 20's, I had a very small waist with a pronounced line running down the middle (I always hated my legs, which are too short for my body, but I was happy with my midriff). Well, I lost it and I've been doing crunches trying to get that definition back. I saw that vid and realized with great happiness that Upton's middle looks like mine! (OK, everything else on her looks looks better, but I can claim parity when it comes to tummies.)

Posted by: Tobacco Road at February 14, 2014 07:06 PM (4Mv1T)
It's a chorus, Peaches. Fuck the UAW.
My sister worked as a nurse in the medical department of a GE plant which closed back in 2008. She was non-union. If some worker came to her with a tiny scratch, they'd demand 6 weeks off. She would refuse to sign off on it - and 5 seconds later, two UAW reps would be in her office screaming in her face. The UAW turned her from a Democrat into a Republican.
Sadly, I can't say she's a conservative, because she can't grasp that Republicans aren't conservatives. She lives in Paul Ryan's district and loves him and nothing I can say will change her mind. In fact, she gets angry at me for "turning against the GOP," because I was singing praise for him when Mitt chose him as running mate. It was a huge move for her to go from Dem to GOP and asking her to look deeper is asking too much. Which is why Ryan is assured of reelection.

Yes, Canucks have an accent. I hear it quite strongly when I'm up there. Not so much when I meet a stray Canadian down here in the States. It's the vowels...
I like Mark Steyn but he desperately clings to the accent he picked up from a few years in boarding school in the UK. He reminds me of seeing the late Canadian novelist Robertson Davies speak about 25 years ago. Davies was this theaterical character who spoke about Canada in a very British sounding voice. He had gone to school in Oxford and had left the UK during the war - but the Brit accent remained. Christopher Plummer's another one (although I'll excuse him, since he's a Shakespearean actor).

50 bones for 100 is about right for the market now, that's about what the online ammo vendors are offering for target ammo.
One tip: even if you don't reload your own ammo, keep your brass. Good trading material with the reloaders at your local range.

Maybe it's that I live in the world capital of vapidity, Southern California. But it seems like these days, women (thanks to feminism, the self-esteem movement, etc)-- not just the 9s and 10s, but all the way down to even the 4s and 5s-- are just convinced that if they reject and/or are cruel to every non-absolute-Alpha male who desires them, George Clooney has just *got* to waltz through their front door someday with roses, chocolate and an Amex Black Card.
It doesn't help that what's known as "creep-shaming", i.e., ridiculing any man who isn't an absolute Alpha, is all the rage these days it seems. From what I've read, Pink even wrote a song celebrating it.
I admit it: I don't have much money, and need to lose weight. I don't expect or demand to punch above my weight. But it would be nice to meet a decent woman who would give me a chance. Of course, world peace would be nice too.
Okay, end rant.

Never heard of it referred to as "creep-shaming", but maybe Florida was different. We used to have what I called the Schizophrenic Princesses down there. They wanted some playboy billionaire philanthropist, but would easily settle for a tatted-up gangbanger... and exclude anything in between out of hand. After a while, it just left you kind-of hacked off at the whole concept of dating.

Well, I was a good wife tonight...but it sorta backfired on us.
After stuffing ourselves on a great dinner that I spent hours preparing...
My beloved and I lapsed into a food coma that killed any hope of further activities for the evening.
Him: "Oh honey, that was sooo good. I ate too much."
Me: "Me too. I shouldn't have had desert. I'm hurting now."
Him: "I'm in pain too. I've gotta go lay down and stretch out. ...And don't even thing about jumping on me for any bouncy-bouncy. Okay?"
Me: "No problem. ....Love you madly, though."
Him: "Oh baby, I love you bigtime. You shouldn't have fed me so good."
Me: "S'okay. ...Raincheck."

Could do what I did and move to Texas. College Station/Bryan reminds of the Florida I used to know, with slightly more capricious weather. Very nice area. I've been too busy trying to get on my feet to even think about relationships in the 6 months I've been here, but the people on the whole seem more upright than the skid row town I left in FL.

If there is one thing I regret Steve, it was not giving nice guys more of a chance when I was in my 20's.
But on the other hand, the "nice" guys I knew in my 20's were total lefties (I was a lib too then), so maybe we wouldn't be getting along so well now. I started to evolve politically in my late 20's and early '30's. If I had had a lib hubby telling me I was wrong and awful and a heretic, would I have permitted myself to swing to the right? I'm not saying you're in that category, of course, only that they guys I knew were. My qualms about them now are not based on niceness, but on politics.
I dunno. There are morons here who are married to libs and they vent at the AOSHQ and get along with their spouses well in other areas. I have a hard time thinking I could maintain respect for a man who voted for King Putt.

Yep, money and status seem to be all that matter to a lot of SoCal women anymore. Hip-hop/rap culture also seems to have a lot to do with it IMHO. It *literally doesn't matter* to too many women how the money came about either. As long as you're a millionaire, you can be murdering buses full of nuns and still get plenty of attention from girls. I know that's not new, but it's still depressing.
Another thing I'm sick of hearing about: all the love letters that the men on Death Row get day after day after day. Supposedly Richard Ramirez used to get piles of them. Of course. If you're a murderer, that's no problem as long as you're high status (in the news media every day or so). But if you're a decent guy who's looking for a job, you get treated like a loser.

Donna V.: thanks for making that confession. I can understand about the political thing though. Those things seem to work like a grain of sand in your shoe: the longer you try to ignore/minimize it, the bigger and bigger it feels until you can't stand the pain anymore. I don't need to meet a woman who's necessary conservative, but I don't think I'd be compatible with an out-and-out lefty either, and I doubt one would be comfortable with me, unless we were both really good at explaining to each other our views and modifying them rather than arguing about the chasm.

Know that feeling. Or if you're a guy in a dead-end job just trying to get by like I used to be. Luckily, not in the dead-end job anymore, that's part of why I moved here (the other part being to get away from what Florida was turning into). There's still signs up around town that say "Now Hiring, Full Time" which is rare in the rest of the country. I'm telling you, Texas is the place to be right now.

At Amy Alkon's site, there's a good story about a guy who lost his girlfriend, whom he claimed to absolutely cherish, because at a party a jerky "friend" basically called her a roaring slut right in front of him... and he was afraid of making a scene, so he didn't defend her. *That* kind of stuff, I can understand is a giant turn-off to women.
What he should have done is grabbed the shithead's tie, gotten in his face and said something like "apologize profusely to my girlfriend RIGHT NOW, or I am going to permanently separate you from your sorry drunk ass in the parking lot." That's what I like to think I would have done, anyway. :-)

Yeah but keep in mind that those women who pursue relationships with lifers and Death Row inmates are seriously broken people. They choose men who are so desperate for any distraction there is very little chance of rejection but at the same time there is very little risk of consummation. It's codependency via the USPS.

True, Vendette. I once dated a guy for a while whose mother had killed herself when he was 12. And he really, really wanted a mom - and I didn't want to be his mom! He wanted direction from a woman - and I wanted direction from a man.
About 3 years after we broke up, I met him on the streets of DC - he had moved back to NYC and found a woman who was at least (in my estimation)10 years older than him. It was weird, he invited me to go with the two of them for a drink and I accepted. I think he was doing a sort of "see, I got someone, ha, ha!" sort of thing, but I wasn't at all jealous. She was very obviously Mommy to him - and I was happy for him. Honestly, I didn't sneer at that. Humans should grab happiness where they can, and since he wouldn't have been happy with me, I'm glad they found it in their own way.

And it's true, too many women are looking for $$$$ while too many men are looking for a pornstar beast straight off the set, fresh waxed and ready to go. I can understand why that's also a turn-off to many women. The problem is, I AM NOT ONE OF THEM, and I'm tired of women assuming any man who has to ask for attention from them is either (1) that, or (2) a complete failure at life.
Another thing I'm sick of hearing: "oh, you want a woman? Just be yourself." I did that for 20 years and never received *one* iota of interest from any woman the entire time.

The thing is, you really DO have to be yourself... but the "just" part is where that advice goes wrong.
Confidence is the key. Which is always easier to demonstrate when you really feel it, and you're obviously going to feel it most when you are being true to who you are.
Confidence comes in many forms. As some of the ladies are saying, it's sometimes about taking charge of situations. Sometimes it's about going shoe shopping with them, and actually having an opinion about what they pick out (or picking out something yourself).
Never be afraid to say something because you don't know how she's going to respond. If you happen to say something that makes her mad, then it means she cares enough about what you say to have a reaction to it. You can do it without being a jerk, but if you believe something, stand up to her. She'll respect you for being honest, even if she stays mad for a bit.
Simple to say, but the ladies will agree with me: confidence is sexy to the chicks.

He applied properly, met their athletic and academic standards, didn't get the congressional appointment. But I knew better. Congressionals are for looks. If the academy wants you, they'll find a way. Budget cuts, internal policy squabbles, wrote a letter, visited the coach, yadda. Long wait, and a pretty good college was stalking him. A school with a lot of national championships. I gave him a hat.
Wednesday he found out he'll be his high school's valedictorian. Thursday he got his letter of assurance from the academy. Friday they called to say they had one appointment left, and it was his. On his birthday.
And then he went to the garage, and his parents had bought him a CJ-7. He won't be able to use it from June until 2016, but dad's going to do some improvements. He'll be working under the two best coaches in the country. And he's going to be an officer.
He did that. But I feel so good for him, it's like it all happened to me.

Ah okay your in the long beach area. A pledge drive is a good place to start. Don't be scared about going on dates with liberals, you definitely have more in your area than some other parts of socal but it's good practice. You might have to be more aggressive in typical social settings like the gym or the grocery store. Good luck to yah.

It's getting late, and I'm all jazzed up with a fresh bath, Old Spice, and Little Abe is ready for action. I'm waiting for Krystal from Hard Bodies Lounge to arrive and make my evening.
She always asks for $1500, and is worth every penny. I give her the $1500 for basic service, and if she honks my love stick, I'm prepared to tip her another $500 or so because it's Valentines day.

I was amazed at how straightforward it was. Not a lot of sentimentality, and presumably very little or no speculation. These were the things that were known about his life, and this is how it ended.
And somewhere in there, he (and the rest of the extraordinary band, the survivors of which went on to form New Order) managed to tap into a depth of emotion, and present it to us in songs that are piercingly sad and beautiful.

Stand Up Guys.
Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin.
Three old wise guys get together to do one last job. The girl in the trunk is someone they find in a car they steal from a group of street thugs. She was kidnapped, raped, and about to be left for dead when they found her. They offer to put things right and let her have a chance at some payback with a baseball bat.

Er, in many parts of contemporary Commiefornia, if you're a guy and you "try the Mexican women", and if either (a) you're not Mexican, or (b) you're Mexican but from an unacceptable part of Mexico, then there will be IMMEDIATE AND MAJOR CONSEQUENCES involving fists, boots, baseball bats, lead pipes, knives, guns and moving vehicles, various combinations thereof, or all of them at once.
I'm not kidding. This is why emergency rooms around here have armed security and metal detectors now. Bad blood arising from such issues is and will be continued even to the point of bursting into hospitals to finish off people who survived the first round.
A white friend of mine had a Riverside cholo say to him very directly, "We can date choor women. Choo can not date our women. Hokay? Choo are clear on this now?"
Where if he wasn't clear on that, remedial lessons would have been immediately applied until such time as he was crystal clear on it. They're good that way. Very instructive.
This "melting pot" business the ridiculous gringoes talk about? Mexicans have a pot and they do not want anyone unapproved melting anywhere near their pot. No way, Jose.

Infamously, someone recounted a similar completely obvious con, and I laughed and said something very much along the lines of "you're got to be a retard to fall for shit like that", except with considerably more brio.
Someone looked uncomfortable and excused themselves from the table. I found out later that they had in fact been taken for a goodly sum of money by just such a scam.
::: crestfallen :::
If only I had known!
I would have done the sensitive, caring thing. Run after them and said, "And how long HAVE you been a retard? I have the greatest respect for the Retard-American community."
Unfortunately, there are a whole bunch of people over age 60 who grew up in a less cynical and less crassly manipulative era, and they fall for transparently obvious scams you would not believe.
I am still trying to get half of my older family members to understand that if they get a call or an e-mail about anything financial, the world will not end if they first take two minutes to get in touch with me so that I can look into the bona fides of the inquiry. Am really quite nervous that one of them will get taken.
The only one of the lot about whom I never worried was my now departed grandfather, who could be, let us say, salty. A tough old bird who took no shit and trusted nothing that walked on two legs.

(Possibly revealing slip of the keyboard: originally typed "especially for me", and read into that what you will. I blame clumsy fingers and Val-U-Rite.)
But, finding a partner is a _lot_ harder than finding a fuckmate. Cynically, you can find a fuckmate in short order just by waving money in the air. No one who would make trustworthy partner material would be impressed by that alone. Or would be actively put off by it. Good potential partners examine you to greater depths.

671 Back from dinner and the ballet (Sleeping Beauty). Got lovely earrings and fancy schmancy chocolates. Gave book of poetry, case of assorted mourvedre red wines, and a wine pairings cookbook. That's the most we've ever done for each other on Valentine's Day in 31 years.

It seems that the BH and I were tooling around an obscure corner of SoCal one time, and I mentioned that I had an ex-gf that lived nearby and wondered how she was....and the BH said we could stop by her house and see if she still lived there. She did, and we took her out to dinner, and talked about the intervening years -- she'd taken up motorcycle track racing and was doing well in a bunch of races until wiping out at 125 mph and now walked with a slight limp. Anyhoo, after couple of hours, the BH and I went on our way. As soon as we were out the area, the BH slugged me and said, "you didn't tell me she was gorgeous!" through clenched teeth.
Anyhoo, fast-forward a few months and we're coming up on Valentine's Day, and I decide that I'm going to do one of them internet-thingie delivered-flowers deals to deliver her flowers at work. Women love to get flowers delivered at work so they can proudly display them amongst their peers. So I'm going through the website and get this huge gaudy number -- the better to flaunt with -- and the site pops up with this special offer -- since I'm buying monstrosity A for, like $75, I can have an additional modest bouquet B delivered anywhere else for $25 more.
The ex-gf's social life had been as wrecked as her bike....first through the period of recovery, and through PT afterward. And I had kind-of gathered that she was a little down about that, so I thought: "Y'know what, $25 is not a helluva bad price to maybe lift her spirits a bit." -- and stuck one for her in the basket.
So the big day comes around, and I'm touching base with the BH around mid-morning....everything's normal....and I'm touching base at lunch....everything's normal....and I'm touching base in the afternoon....everything's normal -- and I'm getting pretty damned annoyed that precious BH workplace flaunting hours are being wasted. I wanted to hear "squee! Mine was the most extravagant and gaudy of anyone on my floor!"
And, finally, I touch base with the BH and she's like, "everything's normal, see you at home". I still had a ton of work to do, so I kept chugging along -- I was furious at the florist for denying the BH her rightful bragging rights, and while I was working the next hour or so about 1/4 of my brain was angrily composing a complaint letter. Then the BH checks in with me and says, "there was a message on the answering machine from the ex-gf thanking you for the flowers."
You can well imagine that my blood went cold at that moment.....and scheduling the production line dropped several notches on my priorities list. It was after-hours on Valentine's Day, the BH hadn't gotten any flowers from me, and the ex-gf had.
The third florist I tried was still open, and I could get a slightly runtier version of arrangement A for the paltry sum of $120, which I was duly carrying when I arrived at home that night. I confessed everything immediately.....and she said, "well, now I have a story to tell every Valentine's Day."
And, like I said, she told it to her guys at work yesterday.....it's been almost 20 years.

But, tonight, we went to The Osteria in Palo Alto -- their veal saltimboca is sooooo good -- and saw a performance of The Mikado by the Stanford Savoyards. And I wore a red t-shirt with a silly Valentine's theme that is really useless 364 days a year, 'cause I wanted everyone to know that it was a special night with my squeeze -- it even got a comment from one of the girls in the box office.

Looks Like Baltimore dodged the five inches of Glowbull Worming that they were calling for throughout the night.
And now for the completely random, and very erratic 22LR ammo report for today.
Four major ammo search bots, and about seven major individual sellers, including Cabela's.
Nothin'...zip...nada for less then .14 per round.

The .22lr issue is getting old. But I have found it, on rare occasions, for normal pricing. $20 for 550 in the Cincy area.
It takes an almost OCD like insistence on checking the ammo counter at all stores I visit. Most of the places have normal truck days of Tues and Thurs - you have to be there when it hits the shelf.
Last Thurs, Walmart here sold 20 bricks and 20 - 100 round packs in less than 1 hr. I did get lucky that day.
