While the search for MH370 continues in the Southern Indian Ocean, it's a reminder that this area of Earth is quite remote from...well anywhere. It's far from any major populated areas, doesn't get much shipping traffic and has deep waters. Which makes it perfect for doing things that you'd rather not have anyone find out about.
This could be disposing of a passenger jet or say testing something out that you'd like to keep hush-hush. Like say a nuclear test.
The Vela Incident - sometimes referred to as the South Atlantic Flash - was an unidentified "double flash" of light detected by an American Vela Hotel satellite on September 22, 1979, near the Prince Edward Islands off Antarctica, which many believe was of nuclear origin. The most widespread theory among those who believe the flash was of nuclear origin is that it resulted from a joint South African and Israeli nuclear test. The topic remains highly disputed today....The "double flash" was detected on September 22, 1979, at 00:53 GMT, by the American Vela satellite 6911, which carried various sensors designed specifically to detect nuclear explosions that contravened the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
The satellite reported the characteristic double flash of a small atmospheric nuclear explosion of two to three kilotons, in the Indian Ocean between The Crozet Islands (a very small, sparsely inhabited French possession) and the Prince Edward Islands which belong to South Africa at 47°S 40°E. The previous 41 double flashes the Vela satellites detected were all subsequently confirmed to be nuclear explosions.[7]
Despite the official US declaration that the satellite's detection was inconclusive, it's widely believed that the flash was in fact a joint Israeli-South African nuclear test that was stronger than expected and produced a detectable flash.
Author Richard Rhodes also concludes the incident was an Israeli nuclear test, conducted in cooperation with South Africa, and that the United States administration deliberately obscured this fact in order to avoid complicating relations with South Africa.[2] Likewise, Leonard Weiss offers a number of arguments to support the test being Israeli, and claims that successive US administrations continue to cover up the test to divert unwanted attention that may portray its foreign policy in a bad light.[3] In the 2008 book The Nuclear Express: A Political History of the Bomb and its Proliferation Thomas C. Reed and Danny B. Stillman stated their opinion that the "double flash" was the result of a joint South African-Israeli nuclear bomb test.
If you enjoyed paying more to cover other people while getting less for your own health insurance, just wait - the same idea is coming to mortgages. Basically everyone will be required to pay mortgage insurance on their mortgage to cover the defaults of the sketchier, unqualified borrowers.
According to Robert Romano, the senior editor of Americans for Limited Government, lawmakers want to "create a new government entity" (yay!) to supervise the forced creation of a mortgage insurance fund that would supposedly replace the need for government bailouts (but keep reading, because it won't). The mandatory insurance fund rises to 2.5 percent of outstanding loans after 10 years. As Romano notes, it will be borrowers who will ultimately have to pay this additional cost - and since those who put less than 20 percent down already pay mortgage insurance, the additional cost will inevitably fall on people who do put 20 percent down.If insurers were to choose to create a risk pool, that would be one thing. But the reason this is going to be mandated is because the government still wants lenders to make mortgages available to sketchier applicants.
So, to sum it up: people who can't really afford the mortgages will be subsidized by forcing people who can afford them to pay more.
Ninth Circuit Makes Hawaii a Shall-Issue State
The Ninth Circuit overturned a district court ruling against Christopher baker who had asked for an injunction against various Hawaii state agencies that had denied him a concealed carry license.
In light of our holding in Peruta, the district court made an error of law when it concluded that the Hawaii statues did not implicate protected Second Amendment activity. Accordingly, we vacate the district court's decision denying Baker's motion for a preliminary injunction and remand for further proceedings consistent with Peruta.
The Four Rules of Selfie Safety
1. Treat Every Camera Phone As If It Were On 'Photo' Mode.
2. Never Take A Picture Of Anything You Don't Want The World To See.
3. Do Not Press 'Share' Until You Are Ready To Be Embarrassed.
4. Be Aware Of Who You Share Your Picture With, And That *They* Might Share It With Others.
Luckily for us 21 year-old bank robber Jules Bahler didn't follow these rules.
France's Anti-Semitism Problem is Bigger Than One Comic
But the problem here goes deeper than the way the measures employed by government authorities and Jewish groups to punish Dieudonné have predictably boomeranged on them and turned him into a counter-cultural hero. This depressing spectacle can be represented as something new in which social media and the Internet have provided a forum for disgruntled people looking for a spokesman for their desire to use the Jews as a convenient scapegoat for their troubles. But Dieudonné is merely the latest outbreak of the same old European sickness that produced the very Holocaust that the comedian has tried to deny.
...Rather than focus all their energy on one rogue entertainer, Europeans who care about stamping out hate need to ask whether his ability to tap into old hatreds says something about other aspects of their society. Anti-Semitism isn't merely the product of the banlieues - working class suburbs - where immigrant families live but a factor that has played a role in politics and culture for centuries. What they need are not more laws restricting anti-Semitic speech but a nationwide soul-searching about the way Jew-hatred has been enabled by a broader group than those laughing at Dieudonné's jokes.
The mattress business is pretty much all a marketing scam which is why you will never find the same exact mattress model at different stores. The actual cost of a wholesale mattress is around $300.
Is there a more maddening industry? They confuse us with silly product names (the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Fletcher Ultra Plush Pillowtop or the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Brookmere Plush?). They flummox us with bogus science ("pocketed coils"? "Microtek foundations"? "Fiberlux"?). And they weigh us down with useless features (silk damask ticking?). It's like buying a used car, and almost as expensive -- I've seen mattresses going for $7,000. What's a consumer to do?
The secret to mattress shopping is that the product is basically a commodity. The mattress biz is 99-percent marketing. So just buy the cheapest thing you can stand and be done with it, because they're pretty much all the same. And that's all you need to know. But do read on -- the world of sleep products is quite fascinating, and I'd like to share it with you.
More here on why the business became the scam it is.

The only thing that mars it is the Lake City FL VA called Middle Daughter about Pop (father in law) trying to reach me because he has me listed as his point of contact, but no idea why and they didn't return my phone call. I'm thinking because they didn't call right back it isn't vitally important, but it is worrisome nonetheless.

Those pillow top mattresses are nice...for about 6 months.
Then they start getting wallowed-out and smushed where you sleep most of the time.
And you can't flip the pillow top mattresses over.
Not like the old regular mattresses.
I didn't want one. But hubby did.
Now, his side of the bed is a concave wallow...my side, not so much.
But then, he weights twice as much as I do.

Given that you can hardly get the VA to call when something serious _has_ happened, I don't know what to make of that.
That organization is weird. Against the general backdrop of complete federal government dysfunction and incompetence and blundering, there are still a few bright shining stars of medical brilliance.
A former doc I knew at Stanford Medical School quit his post there to go work at the VA (there is one right round the corner). Great guy. Why would someone make that tradeoff, taking a pay cut and a prestige hit? "Giving back."

Would it be mean of me to suggest that people from all over should converge on his town and turn his funeral into an ugly little circus?

I hope this happens. I would have preferred he be set on a fire ant bed slathered with honey in the middle of a cobra pit surrounded by Navy SEALS peeing on him.But getting excommunicated from his fake church will have to do.

The mattress industry suggests it's only good for approximately 8 years and should be replaced due to sloughing skin cells making the mattress double it's original weight, and the nasty factor from touching taco to love stick.

It's obvious why they can't hold a funeral for him. The throngs of protesters (in this case perfectly justified IMHO) would make the ceremony all but inaudible and unbearable. And if he's buried somewhere, that luckless cemetery is going to have to get used to there being a permanent 4-inch-minimum smelly yellow pond, with tiny brown islands, if you get my drift, on their property.
So in effect, he'll end up with NOTHING left on earth to remember him by except his fellow cult members, who will also all die out eventually. Sounds about right IMHO.

If the Commiefornia GOP had a brain, they would have backed McClintock for governor. Instead, they all got Hollyweird star-struck and backed the plastic Austrian android Schwarzenegger.
Who, once elected, proceeded to hire a metric fuckton of career liberal Democrats for his gubernatorial staff. Not content to stop there, der Groppenfuhrer went on to back such impeccably conservative policies as banning ammo purchases by mail (thankfully struck down by the courts), and hugely expensive anti-global-warming mandates. Plus the "hydrogen highway" to nowhere. Capping it all off with a redistricting scheme that permanently shifted the balance of power in the state to liberals. Oh, and knocking up the housekeeper as a demonstration of Republican "family values". What a triumph.
Really, if you want to know what might have been, read McClintock's brilliant and unsparing analysis on the public schools we're paying for, versus the public schools we could be getting for the same price.

Uh yeah I'm gonna have to see some evidence on this. Because mattresses are pretty heavy and dead skin is not very dense so unless the mattress volume quadrupled over 8 years - maybe - there's no way it's weight could have doubled.

Come my love I'll tell you a tale,
Of a boy and girl
And there love story.
And how he loved her oh so much,
and all the charms she did posess
Now this did happen once apon a time,
When things were not so complex.
And how he worshiped the ground she walked,
And when he looked he became obsessed.
My love is like a storybook story,
But its as real as the feelings I feel.
My love is like a storybook story,
But its as real as the feelings I feel.
His love was stronger than the power so dark,
A prince could have within his keeping.
His spells to weave and steal her heart,
Within her heart but only sleaping.
My love is like a storybook story,
But its as real as the feelings I feel.
My love is like a storybook story,
But its as real as the feelings I feel.
And he said:
"Don't you know i love you oh, so much,
and lay my heart at the foot of your dress."
And she said:
"Don't you know that storybook loves,
Always have a happy ending."
Then he swooped her up just like in the books
And on his stalion the rode away.
My love is like a storybook story,
But its as real as the feelings I feel.
My love is like a storybook story,
But its as real as the feelings I feel.

Believe it or not, it's closer to the rule than the exception. There's just something about guitars. Even if you can't play them all, it's pretty easy to come up with a situation where just about any given guitar is an absolute moral imperative.
Camera lenses are a lot like that, too.

Do you have another user account on that PC that you could sign in with? If so, you can create a new account and copy the data from the old one into it. It's a pain, but I've done it a couple of times.

Lightfoot.
"Canadian Railroad Trilogy"
Pull it up from his "Gordon's Gold, Vol. 1" compilation. You won't regret it.
The entire disc is purely amazing. It's one of my "get drunk and zone out to the tunes" CDs. One of those collections of songs, that can transport you away, over years, miles and memories. As such, it's in a very select category.

No, seriously -- I'm planning our ramble, and on the day we're leaving Greensboro and heading south, the weather for Greensboro and Charlotte are both described as "fog" -- does that mean that it's foggy from dawn to dusk, or that there are foggy spells in there, or what? I've never seen it before.

Mostly cloudy skies early, then becoming foggy and damp late. Low 39F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph.
So, essentially, it looks like fog rolling in overnight Thursday and hanging around into Friday morning.

Guy desires a nice ride -- big ticket item, about $85K -- hates the thought of too many government cuts on his pie....so he makes some arrangements and gets himself and two other people into a room with a script.
Goes to the first one, says: "Got any pre-'64 quarters?" Since the guy is a coin dealer, he says, "sure, how many do you need?" "About 23,200" "OK, but that'll cost you about $85,500" [ http://tinyurl.com/yps2dg ] "No prob, here's a check" "Thanks, here's a sack of coins."
Walks over to the car dealer, and says, "hey, buddy -- would you sell me that lovely car in the parking lot for $5,800? I've got this sack of quarters right here...." The car dealer replies, "sounds good to me, let me sign you over this title."
Then, of course, the car dealer walks over to the coin dealer and says, "I've got a metric buttload of silver quarters, what'll you give me for the lot?" And the coin dealer says, "$84,500" and they both say "done."
Result -- a guy gets an $85,000 car but only pays sales tax on $5,800 -- and annually pays plate fees based on that value as well. The joke is that this is probably legal so long as there are any silver quarters in general circulation.

My dad, with 3 degrees in Engineering, tried to teach me trig in 4th grade or thereabouts, and I ended up with huge mental block about it. In 10th grade, I got the analytic geometry method, with a unit circle and the point having the coordinates (cos theta, sin theta) -- and found I could pretty much derive anything I didn't already know on-the-fly.
