Gates and Barack Obama's Narcissistic War Insecurities
Moe Lane breaks down this paragraph from Gates' book and how much it says about Obama. The context is a request by Adm. Mullen and Gen McChrystal for 5000 more support troops early in Obama's term in order to keep the Afghan situation from deteriorating further:
[JCS Chairman Admiral Michael] Mullen and I repeatedly discussed with the infuriated president what he regarded as military pressure on him. "Is it a lack of respect for me?" Obama asked us. "Are [Petraeus, McChrystal and Mullen] trying to box me in? I've tried to create an environment where all points of view can be expressed and have a robust debate. I'm prepared to devote any amount of time to it-however many hours or days. What is wrong? Is it the process? Are they suspicious of my politics? Do they resent that I never served in the military? Do they think because I'm young that I don't see what they're doing?"
For Obama their request was all about him and political maneuvering. The possibility that Mullen and McChrystal really thought the 5,000 enablers were necessary doesn't seem to have occurred to him.
And Obama, Biden and their advisors didn't seem to understand military matters and the military in general.
That Sunday meeting was unlike any I ever attended in the Oval Office. Obama said he had gathered the group principally to go through his decisions one more time to determine whether Mullen and Petraeus were fully on board. The commanders said what he wanted to hear, and I was pleased to hear my proposal being adopted. Then came an exchange that is seared into my memory. Biden said he was ready to move forward, but the military "should consider the president's decision as an order."
"I am giving an order," Obama quickly said.
I was shocked. I had never heard a president explicitly frame a decision as a direct order. With the U.S. military, it is completely unnecessary. As secretary of defense, I had never issued an "order" to get something done; nor had I heard any commander do so. Obama's "order," at Biden's urging, demonstrated the complete unfamiliarity of both men with the American military culture.
We're in the best of hands.
And it's Walmart FTW despite being The Worst Worst Place Ever To Work according to the Left.
This is really amazing - the much derided Walmart health-care benefits are much better than one could buy under Obamacare. Premiums are steeply lower for Walmart recipients, as are the required deductibles. And Walmart insurance gives employees access to more hospitals and many more doctors than are in the Obamacare exchanges. Will we see the same sort of protests against Obamacare as we've seen against Walmart? Of course not.
Supreme Court to Review Obama's Recess Appointments to NLRB
Now, for the first time in American history, the Supreme Court will consider just what constitutes a "recess appointment." The court will hear a case involving a Washington state canning company that lost an NLRB decision involving the questionably appointed commissioners. Senate Republicans have also joined the suit that, if overturned, could invalidate hundreds of NLRB decisions made after the president claimed his recess appointment power to name the three Democrats.
One of the question before the court will be; who decides when the Senate is in recess?
On one hand you can argue that the Senate is in recess when it says it's recessed, but if the Senate declares that it will conduct no business for a set period as it does during its pro forma sessions, that's arguably a de facto recess.
Why is a 30 Year Veteran Colonel Now Living in a Van Down By the River?
But retired Air Force Colonel Robert Freniere doesn't fit that profile. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Freniere, who concluded a 30-year military career in 2006, spends most of his nights in an old minivan, not far from the military academy where his son is a student. Despite an impressive service resume--and multiple graduate degrees--Freniere has struggled to find work in recent years:"After his retirement, Freniere said, it took him a year to find work. Like many retired servicemen, he turned to jobs with defense contractors. Twice, the work took him to Afghanistan, he said.
Freniere said he had not been able to find a contracting job since August 2012. He blames the federal sequestration for squeezing contractors of money and of the confidence to hire people. He has not lasted long at other jobs, as a substitute teacher and an executive in a company writing proposals for government grants.
When he came home, he had nowhere to go after separating from his second wife. (In an interview, she said that he does not help her pay the mortgage on their home.)
But there's a mystery here since his pension ought to be enough to support him and his family.
Yet, elements of Colonel Freniere's story are puzzling. For starters, there's the income issue; as a retired O-6, with 30 years of service, Freniere receives a pension equivalent to 75% of his base pay, somewhere around $8,000 a month. We'll assume that his ex-wife gets half of his pension, as mandated by federal law. That still leaves the Colonel with upwards of $4,000 a month to live on.
More here.

NYC woman shocked to see 'Negro' as an option on juror form
A New York City woman was shocked when she was asked if she identified as 'Black, African American or Negro' on a juror form.Raeana Roberson, 25, who is black, received the form on Monday from the Queens County courthouse when called in for jury duty.
'I felt shocked and upset and totally disrespected,' Roberson told The Huffington Post.
No one tell her what the C in NAACP stands for or she'll totally freak.
How Many People Does It Take to Free a 12 Year Old's Tongue From a Frozen Flagpole
Okay 12 year old Maddie Gilmartin had a sudden idiotic urge to lick a flagpole which makes her a young fool - who's now learned her lesson:
[T]here was no dare involved. Maddie's a kid who was just curious and learned the hard way.Her parents hope other kids will realize the dangers and not make the same mistake their daughter made.
"It was just completely innocent," Shawn said.
Maddie said her tongue now aches and feels like it was stung by a bee, but otherwise she's doing fine.
But the really disappointing part is the haplessness of the adults around her who left her stuck to the pole for 15 minutes while the authorities were summoned. Did no one think of warm water (or in a pinch urine)?
To us, the most amazing part of the story is that nobody was able to unstick the poor girl without calling the authorities. Police responded. Someone called a relative who worked in a hospital, and she in turn got a doctor's opinion.About 10-15 minutes into Maddie's ordeal, her parents - with the encouragement of the cops and ER doc - poured hot water on the interface between the 98.6º girl and the -4º or so pole, and Maddie was freed. Taken to the ER, she learned she's going to hurt for a while - and recover. She then went home.
She seems like a bright child, in case you needed any more proof that bright people can do dumb things. It still kind of amazes us that someone can live in New England and not know (1) not to touch bare flesh to bare metal, and (2) how to unstick the twain if you ignore (1).
And no she had not seen the movie A Christmas Story if you were curious.
Woman Eats 4.5lb Steak in Less Than 3 Minutes
Like most pro eaters she's on the thin side - another blow to the Big Man theory.
Hats off to Canadian Molly Schuyler, who undertook a record-breaking 72-oz steak consumption on a whim at Sayler's of Portland, OR. Schuyler polished off the 4.5lb slab of meat in less than three minutes. The world record time this feat stood at 6:48. It's not clear whether Schuyler's record has official standing, though: record-setting conditions appear to stipulate that challengers use a knife and fork, not their hands. Nevertheless, Schuyler has done something amazing.

It's stories like the frozen pole and the upset black woman that give me an evil sort of hope for a bleak future.
Alls I know is two things:
1. I will easily rule these future generations of imbeciles and idiots.
2. Unfortunately, they will be nearly useless to me.
3. If anarchy is in our future, I will totally rule whatever is in my purview.
4. Again, however, I will be ruling over idiots.

I'll never be that active again, which is likely a good thing I was pretty addled by the 3d day of no sleep each time.
My reason for not being that active is probably because I have been making my peace slowly with my nation being gone ever since Christie put his tongue down Obama's throat.

yeah what we need is to raise it another 45% and drive U6 up to 30+%!
Winning!
Obamanomics the assertion bleeding 1.5 to 2.5 million per year into U6 structural unemployment is a roaring economy.

Eating contests are something I can't comprehend.
I can't say that I was perfectly well brought up in every regard, but my elders tried, and one of the lessons that stuck was that I was _goddamned lucky_ to be eating well, that some in the family had barely gotten by with regard to regular food in the past, and that I should never take this for granted by wasting food.
(n.b., with a caveat that deliberate overeating is wastage)
Unfortunately, the communication of this message has completely failed with certain younger members of my extended family, who will order huge plates of food at restaurants, and eat one (1) bite, and tell the server to take the rest away. In my day I would have trembled for fear of consequences had I done that. They insolently shrug.
I suspect that the oncoming Burning Times will provide a useful corrective to this bratty behavior. Nothing like missing four or five meals in a row to make you REALLY HONESTLY APPRECIATE FOOD.

No you don't necessarily lose the weight quick, but you eat regularly for *only five days every week.* The other two days, you're not allowed to go above 900 calories.
I'd tried it but I'm afraid that after two days and just 1,800 calories, I'd waddle on down to beautiful downtown Lakewood and swallow an entire KFC franchise location whole.

That's the problem with all these suburban geniuses. They don't let their spawn enjoy quality educational films such as Joe Dirt. In it, the silly child with the flagpole-frozen tongue would have observed Brandi's dog Charlie with his ballsack frozen to the porch. In a fascinating dramatic sequence, the silly child and the lovely and stacked Brandi both would have learned that warm water is better at thawing frozen flesh than a hammer or a grilling fork.

- Jon Voight won one (although for what I'm not sure).
- And Mia Farrow tuned out as soon as she saw Woody Allen was about to get a tribute. On top of that, Ronan Farrow asked on Twitter: "Missed the Woody Allen tribute - did they put the part where a woman publicly confirmed he molested her at age 7 before or after Annie Hall?"

I do not need to be told who Obama is, what he things, or what he might do. Everything I read about him confirms what I have already figured out for myself. This book does tell me something about Gates that I did not know, but should have.

I only refused to eat what my parents cooked once. It was some weird goulash my dad just dumped whatever was in the pantry into. He was a great cook, but there was no way I could eat it. So, I went to bed without dinner. Now, when I was in college, my whole v-ball team was sent to bed without dinner because our coach was pissed off we lost a game during a tournament. I was so damn mad over that. We all pooled our money and had pizza delivered to the hotel. The SOB left us in the hotel and went and ate. It was bad enough the only places we could eat on trips were buffets, and we were restricted to the salad bar and chicken. No sodas either, water only for us. That's just the kind of thing you pull with girls in the 18-22 year old range. By the end of that season, my dad was calling us Salad Shooters.

Hey, I got that same regimen. Extremely instructive.
I also was sternly told when I refused a dinner item that "Children just like you are starving in China. And while you may not like this particular dish, it would mean the world to them. You should be properly thankful for every bite. We can't always have everything just the way we want it."
I now sadly wonder how many more years it will be before bratty Chinese kids are being told, "Children just like you are starving in America..."

I have lived through more diet fads than I care to remember.
I don't "diet" per se and I don't have any trouble maintaining a stable healthy body composition. I eat regular, carefully sized portions of nutritious food, and that works for me. But I have seen endless cases of friends see-sawing wildly up and down.
Takeaways from their unfortunate experiences:
-- Rapid "weight loss" diets typically don't work. Those that do often entail losing "weight", i.e., mass, from tissues where you really don't want to be losing mass. Bone and muscle instead of adipose. Especially if you lose muscle, you'll regret it. It burns plenty of calories just maintaining itself.
-- Aggressive "fat burning" means that all of the considerable number of fat-soluble toxins anyone in a modern industrial society has soaked up then get dumped straight into the rest of your system as the fat goes away. You don't necessarily want to have that happen really fast. Slow and steady wins the race. Give your body time to eliminate the stuff that was dissolved in the fat.
-- Anything involving fasting or radical calorie restriction typically does not work. Humans are keenly adapted to historical feast-or-famine conditions. Eat like you're in a famine and the next time your body finds a feast it'll stock up on fat in anticipation of surviving the next famine cycle.

Boy, do I remember that meal! I had 6 siblings and in the early 60's the old man couldn't beg work. He shot pool and 'played the ponies' with what little money there was. It was either beans and cornbread or.....steak for the parents and hot dogs and burgers for the kids. Beans usually won out and I hated them when I finally moved from home. After a couple years I started making them a couple times a month. Sometimes because I had to, but usually because I thought of them as 'comfort food'. Now I look forward to them every so often. Reminds me of happier times. Funny how that works, huh??

In particular, the 'food pyramid' emphasizes breads/grains [N. B. - 'cause that's what farm policy was pushing], de-emphasizes meats, and ignores variety. Result: record levels of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, gluten intolerance, and fat people with dietary deficiencies.

You still want to eat fruits & veggies, emphasis on veggies. It's the processed foods that really mess things up. Plus stuff like margarine instead of butter & going overboard on the all fat is bad.

Fat makes you full really fast -- it's almost impossible to overeat it.....but not everything nutritionists call "fat" is fat. Hydrogenated oils are not a good fat. Whale blubber is. Corn oil is not a good fat, olive oil is.
Incidentally, HFCS (High-Fructose Corn Syrup) is metabolic poison -- it's a combination of two sugars that your body counts as one during consumption. This results in provoking an insulin spike after digestion because your bloodstream accurately counts two.

Episode 3: Here is every character dead or alive we have ever aired with special lube to jerk off Sherlock for most of the episode. We are also going to throw all the big shocks from this season and the last out the window and leave everyone with a more human Sherlock.

One of my old bosses was a green beret field captain in vietnam. Jesus, the stories he told me. One of the things he did was rescue captured airmen from prison camps. He would have had the CMH had the missions actually existed on paper. Rambo fucking lives.

read as far as I could before ready to go back to bed--anchovies on pizza.
Anchovies on white pizza can't be beat, IMO.
a slice of white, with anchovies, spinach, onions, chopped tomato and artichokes is food of the Gods.
Happy New Year all

Hi from Sydney, it's 7.30pm Monday evening and I need to think of something to cook for dinner - perhaps you could send some chicken soup?
Sadly the old Aussie bloke went back to work today and I promised him that dinner would be ready at 8pm! OK time to create something....

Three commentsÂ…
1st: That article states: "Cultivated wheat products are similarly young in biological terms. Yes, there is evidence in the fertile crescent of cultivation of wheat back around 8,000 BC, but in evolutionary terms that's nothing. "
Actually, in evolutionary terms that is a lot of time. One of the fastest spreading genes is the one that allows for adults to metabolize lactose. One way or another, as a species we will adapt.
2nd: Paleo diets might have been what paleolithic humans had to eat, but we are not paleolithic humans. Evolution marches on.
3rd: A person can have a healthy and belly-filling diet on what SNAP provides each month. You just have to get unprocessed foods and cook them up yourself, remembering to utilize left-overs and all the parts.
Posted by: The Political Hat at January 13, 2014 02:25 AM (AymDN)
Oh, I agree....with both of you, actually. On your first point -- yes, there has been ample time to adapt to eating wheat....but rather less time to adapt to eating fast-glycemic bread ("The first identifiable bread wheat with sufficient gluten for yeasted breads has been identified using DNA analysis in samples from a granary dating to approximately 1350 BCE at Assiros in Greek Macedonia" -- Wikipedia). Further, breads were necessarily "whole wheat" until the technology to remove bran and germ was developed.
Second, we have adapted greatly -- your citation of lactose tolerance is greatly on-point.....and so is the fact that beer is the oldest known beverage (artificial drink -- not water, juice, or milk). It possibly dates back to 9500 BC, and barley beer is known to have been produced starting in 3500-3100 BC. So if you want to wash down your Paleo lunch with a cold homebrew, go for it!
But, seriously -- paleo is riding a joke to prove a point. A neolithic diet would be just as healthy.....and a bronze-age diet nearly so. Fact is, if you eliminated anything impossible or expensive in 1492, when Columbus sailed, you'd gain 99-44/100% of the benefits of "Paleo".
And I addressed your third point here http://tinyurl.com/msw2bvm just a few short hours ago.

You find interesting a book called 'Paleofantasy' by Marlene Zuk, which challenges a lot of the assertions of the Paleo pushers. I haven't read it yet but came across it in a torrent.

The paleo thing is meant to push the Overton window sideways. Fact is, human evolution should make things good for most things +/- first century AD.....and differences between the old stone age, the new stone age, the age of bronze, and the age of iron were massive.....not to mention the intervening implementation of plant and animal based agriculture.

As far as Franklin is concerned, I'm so loved that I carry it wrapped around my abdomen.
Joffen is a good guy, and I want him more firmly tied to the mast instead of hitting the panic button. Gabe pulled off a couple of miracles to call him when he did, some ways back -- and I don't want us ever to be that desperate again.

Your IP address tells people (vaguely) where you are. Mine, for instance, keeps people guessing that I'm in Redwood City.....which is a good 20 miles away. Sometimes it guesses San Mateo, which is 30 miles.
It can be assumed that cobs can see the stuff you enter into the "post" form, which includes an email address. In Joffen's case, that probably included his IRL name. So that puts you guessing at someone in a 30-mile circle from where the IP thinks you are that might have the actual name suggested by your email. I don't have the world's most common name, but I once had problems at UCSB because a professor with the same name had failed to return a library book, and I used to win bar bets because there were plaques over the door that said "By order of XXCthulhuXX, no more than 68 people may occupy this space [the fire marshal and I shared a name].
You can also look at previous posts and see if you can narrow things down, but -- needless to say -- it requires some net-fu, luck, and real work to call a moron who hasn't posted his phone number.
I would love to see Joffen make some moron meetups -- I've done several, and I've yet to be disappointed or regretful. And I'm still looking for that fridge-worthy artwork.

Doesn't use ink. Unless you have a great and frequent need for color, inkjets are for suckers. This is a black and white laser, which still has the lowest cost per page on the market.
