Tim Blair: Hey How Come My 17 Year Old World Vision-Sponsored Child Still Draws Like a Preschooler?

So Tim Blair of the Australian Daily Telegraph has been sponsoring a boy named Obvious in Zimbabwe for over ten years but recently noticed a deterioration in the occasional drawings and letters he receives from Obvious including misspellings of his own name.

And so he's starting to ask some obvious questions about what's going on.

phoningitin

World Vision sends us a drawing from the boy every Christmas. Sadly, there is never any sign of improvement. In fact, lately he seems to be regressing.

He's now 17 years old. The above image is his most recent illustration.

World Vision director Matt Davis expressed concern over Tim's concern:

We share your concern about the recent report you have received from Obvious and we have requested an immediate response from our team in Zimbabwe. We are yet to hear back and will let you know as soon as we do.

I can assure you there are some really encouraging things happening in Obvious's community and we are committed to ensuring you receive an appropriate explanation as to what has been happening with his development.

And World Vision Australia CEO Tim Costello wrote an editorial personally addressed to Tim Blair and explained the Obvious mystery thusly:

I too sometimes wonder about the pictures I get from my sponsor children, which is why immediately following Mr Blair's concern regarding his sponsor child, Obvious, I rang our Zimbabwe staff to see if we could get to the bottom of the matter.

They visited Obvious and his mother where Obvious explained he decided to draw his vision of their future home, where they would have a brick house rather than a grass-thatched house. He drew a tree because of the heat and whirlwinds to provide shade and shelter from the harsh sun and winds.

And then he admitted that World Vision's individual child-sponsorship is really more of a group effort kind of thingy:

There was a time many years ago when World Vision's sponsorship program meant the child you sponsored would directly receive your monthly donation. While this model was effective for the individual child, we discovered it didn't change the poverty and situation surrounding them and instead created dissent from families who missed out.

As a result, we moved to what's called a ''community development model'' whereby your child, their family and their community benefit from your sponsorship. Working with community members and leaders, World Vision tailors programs to address varying causes of poverty and build a community's capacity to care for themselves.

Because you know sometimes it takes a village and all that. And maybe 'community development model' Obvious just sucks at drawing and writing and should focus its efforts elsewhere.

FBI Edits Mission Statement: Removes Law Enforcement As 'Primary' Purpose

It's now 'national security'.

"Following the 9/11 attacks, the FBI picked up scores of new responsibilities related to terrorism and counterintelligence while maintaining a finite amount of resources. What's not in question is that government agencies tend to benefit in numerous ways when considered critical to national security as opposed to law enforcement. 'If you tie yourself to national security, you get funding and you get exemptions on disclosure cases,' said McClanahan. 'You get all the wonderful arguments about how if you don't get your way, buildings will blow up and the country will be less safe.'

The 8 Most Terrible Things Done By Jim Moran, America's Worst Congressman

Jim "I like to hit people" Moran (D-VA) is like a one man walking list of all possible congressional scandals and offenses. From assault to voter fraud to insider trading to accepting financial favors to vote peddling to three other kinds of assault - you name it and Jim Moran (D-VA) has probably done it. The only crimes missing from the list seem to be mopery and indecent exposure and I'm pretty sure that's just an oversight on the tabulator's part. Oh and you can guess which ethnic group he really really dislikes. (thanks to CAC)

Doomsday Clock Remains at 5 Minutes Until Midnight

Reasons for the clock remaining at five minutes include the U.S. and Russian not doing much for disarmament increasing nuclear weapon stockpiles in India and China, stalled efforts to reduce carbon emissions globally, and "killer robots."

As well as $$$ since no one would pay much attention to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists unless they harp imminent doom every year.

Why Yes I Will Beat You to Death With Your Own Machine Gun

And that's just what Cpl. Clifford Wooldridge did. From his Navy Cross citation:

As he crouched back behind the wall to reload, he saw the barrel of an enemy machine gun appear from around the wall. Without hesitation, he dropped his empty weapon and seized the machine gun barrel. He overwhelmed the enemy fighter in hand-to-hand combat, killing him with several blows to the head with the enemy's own machine gun.

Mrs. Alec Baldwin Stops Traffic in NYC Because Yoga

She has vowed to post a picture of a yoga pose every day in 2014 'regardless of where I am or what I'm wearing'.

And even a busy New York street couldn't stop Hilaria Baldwin from completing her mission as she posed in midtown New York on Tuesday.

For her most recent yoga picture, Baldwin chose a 'warrior' stance as she stood in high heels with a hood over her face in the middle of the street.

Psychological phenomena in dead people: Post- traumatic stress disorder in murdered people and its consequences to public health

Australian Journal of Parapsychology, Volume 13 Issue 1 (Jun 2013)

Wasney de Almeida Ferreira

The aims of this paper are to narrate and analyze some psychological phenomena that I have perceived in dead people, including evidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in murdered people. The methodology adopted was "projection of consciousness" (i.e., a non-ordinary state of consciousness), which allowed me to observe, interact, and interview dead people directly as a social psychologist. This investigation was based on Cartesian skepticism, which allowed me a more critical analysis of my experiences during projection of consciousness. There is strong evidence that a dead person: (i) continues living, thinking, behaving after death as if he/she still has his/her body because consciousness continues in an embodied state as 'postmortem embodied experiences'; (ii) may not realize for a considerable time that he/she is already dead since consciousness continues to be embodied after death (i.e., 'postmortem perturbation' - the duration of this perturbation can vary from person to person, in principle according to the type of death, and the level of conformation), and (iii) does not like to talk, remember, and/or explain things related to his/her own death because there is evidence that many events related to death are repressed in his/her unconscious ('postmortem cognitive repression'). In addition, there is evidence that dying can be very traumatic to consciousness, especially to the murdered, and PTSD may even develop.

33 Went down to visit Mom today. While in The City, we dropped by the AMA-Unapproved Medicines store, hoping to grab a few things and get over to Mom's, but instead while I found a grassy spot for the dog, the Mrs got to talking to the doc. He's good at talking. He's a wacky old Army Sgt turned Naturapath. He has this patented medicine that reputedly restores vigor and rebuilds deteriorated body parts, and he was talking about hoping to get it distributed to injured vets, through the VA, even if he has to buy it for them himself.* And when I say wacky, he told the Mrs she needs to eat more butter and pork fat. Doesn't your doctor tell you that? *Seriously, though.

93 I dispute the notion that the power windows will "short out" if a car gets submerged. Fresh water is a very poor conductor, sea water much better, but headlights of submerged vehicles can remain lit for hours, nonetheless. Power windows and door locks ought to work equally well, unless of the newer variety, where all such functions are mediated by the body control module.

Best policy: power the windows down and unlock the doors the moment your car goes in the drink, and before the water inside rises to the level of the body control module, usually located behind the dash.

101 Regarding World Vision: I soured on them YEARS ago when I found out they sponsor "Palestinian" children but refuse to sponsor Israeli children. My pastor also said that the money doesn't really go to the children but to the leaders in the countries and of course they keep it. Everytime I'm at a Christian concert and the WV speil comes out, I roll my eyes. I don't trust  them. Now we find they've been dishonest in pretending sponsors are helping individual kids and they're not. That's not forthcoming, that's lying.

And in the foreseeable future, the progs are doomed.  When the new tribal governments emerge from the chaos, the people who speak of "justice" and "fairness" and "Islam" will be shot without trial.  Their like will be purged from the world, to its betterment.

Me?  I'll be long gone.  I paint pictures.  I don't do anything useful.  I have no skills useful in a post-progressive world.  But that's okay.  People who paint pictures will have their use, when the world settles enough to recognize that sometimes beauty can be foreseen.

They've been doing this for quite a while.

As I understand it, when the "sponsored" child used to grow up, a lot of donors would stop and not sponsor another. (for whatever reason)

So they decided to make it a group thing and when you send money, it's given to a group of that age or a village.

It's a scam sometimes.

Want to help someone? Go to a Church and ask them if they need volunteers for something. If they don't, they'll know someone who does and send you on. Volunteering and donating in person and on the spot is more rewarding but it takes more commitment and work than the other kind.

277 I have some well-meaning family members that do that "sponsor a kid" thing.  I don't have the heart to tell them it's all a colossal scam.  I've realized that this is one of those things that brings up one of those "2 kinds of people" things - there are people who know automatically that the entire thing was a scam the first time they ever heard about it, like me, and then there are those who believe utterly and will never believe its a scam, no matter how much evidence they are given.

All the money given to these "kids" goes to buy booze and caviar for African dictators, and their white enablers who get to skim off a good chunk of the takings.  That's all it is about, that's all its ever been about.

Me, I don't need to pay scamsters to assuage my "white guilt".

296 Back to the window breaking in case of immersion thing, here is the trick.

You need something relatively heavy and pointy to bust out the passenger windows. A big knife will work. They make special tools for this, I bought some for all of my relatives, comes with a seat belt cutter built in. Do a search on Amazon, you can get them for under 10 bucks.

And whatever you do, DO NOT waste your time trying to bust out the front windshield. Those are especially hardened and are designed to NOT shatter. They may come out all in one piece but by that time you are drowned. Go for the passenger windows.

Personally, I see that their main pitch as 'you have so much and they have so little'. And it is, of course, true. Look, we are all manipulated to one extent or another -- by the media, our parents, our friends, our leaders, our associations with others. And we all want to be viewed (at a minimum, in the mirror) as a good person. So if it gives you joy to give, then give.

Amazing to see the transformation from 8 year old to teenager back to six year old - all over a two year period. This came from a Christian charity that I'm sure believed the hype. It was pretty sad, to be honest. Other than that, I always respected that guy.

367 Just as a side note, regarding autos in water -- the reason there's a problem in the first place is that there is pressure on the windows and doors from outside. If you're just 11 feet deep, that pressure is roughly five pounds per square inch, so on a three foot by three foot door, you're talking 36x36x5 = 6480 pounds. The chance of forcing a door or trunk-lid open against such a force is negligible.

On the other hand, if water enters the car to a certain point and then stops, it's because the pressure inside and out has equalized At that point, the pressure on the door is 0. If you drove a car into 11 feet of water, it remained upright, water entered through the floor vents only, and the car filled 1/3 with water and stopped, you could just open the door and get out.

If the car remained upright, you noted water entering through the floor vents, and you shot out and shattered a 1'x2' window, the shards would be propelled toward you with 12x24x5 = 1440 pounds of force. After that little wake-up call, you could then attempt to pass your body through a 12x24 space potentially rimmed with razor-sharp glass shards, underwater, while holding your breath.

Unless the car is still sinking, or air is leaving the vehicle in large amounts, your worst enemy is panic -- not time.

Oh, and consider climbing to the highest point where there's a door, and shooting/breaking the lowest point you can reach that faces perpendicular to you. For example -- sunk in 11' of water, nose 2' lower than trunk....climb into back seat passenger side, shatter front passenger side window, throwing most shards and debris into driver's seat, open rear passenger door and kick to surface.

And certainly, it'd be difficult to think of a situation full of more temptation to panic.

At 60 feet deep, the pressure on the outside of a sealed car would be about 25 psi. If no air escaped your vehicle, you'd end up with an air volume of about 1/3 of the vehicle, before you could just open the door. From 60 feet, it is important to blow bubbles continuously while ascending and look up -- I did an ESA in SCUBA class from that depth -- you feel really stupid for about the first 30 feet, 'cause you're kicking away and going "bubble, bubble, bubble"....but after that you're going "where the fuck is all of this coming from?" and the last ten feet you're going "blaaaaaarrrgghh".

If you grab a lungful of air and dive to about 70 feet, your lungs will be crushed to 1/3 their usual capacity -- but you don't care because that's what you do when you exhale anyway. When you come back to the surface, you're back to 100% --- no prob.

If you grab a lungful of air at about 70 feet, and swim to the surface, your lungs will want to expand to 3x their usual capacity, and may either go around or through your rib cage in the process.

Posted by: cthulhu at January 15, 2014 09:36 PM (T1005)

411 Isn't a lot of the problem with submerging cars that they don't tend to stay reliably "wheels down" as they sink? Directional disorientation (but I repeat myself) + panic is a baaad mix.

The basic rule of thumb (not sciency) is not to ascend faster than your air bubbles.

Posted by: tangonine at January 15, 2014 09:40 PM (x3YFz)

416 Yep. Holding your breath after a gulp of regular air volume at 60 feet will blow your lungs out if you hold your breath and race for the surface. Best to stop every 10 feet and exhale a fair amount while also blowing out air in small amounts on the ascent. Long time diver here.

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at January 15, 2014 09:42 PM (ojnk6)

417 Proper ascent: (1) hold your hand straight up -- it's better to hit the bottom of a boat with your hand than your head; (2) look at your hand -- straightening out your throat makes it much more difficult to hold in the pressure needed for pneumothorax; (3) bubble as you rise -- it gets you used to the idea.

420 415 If you grab a lungful of air at about 70 feet, and
swim to the surface, your lungs will want to expand to 3x their usual
capacity, and may either go around or through your rib cage in the
process.

The stop every 10 feet to allow normalization of pressure comes into play when jumping out into an environment your body has not had time to become acclimated slowly.

Nail 'em down with real-world applications. Explain why, if your lungs are like cylinders 5" across and 10" tall, each atmosphere of pressure gets to work on about 370 square inches of area with almost three tons of force....so if you're rising from 100 feet, lungs will want to expand to four times the size of your rib cage with almost 9 tons of force.....which would make http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRX2ntm2rXQ look dainty.

457 There oughta be a law concerning "vintage porn." I mean, the link given in the ONT to a "vintage porn" site has semi-nekkid ladies from the '40 and '50s, sure, and from the '60s, yeah, maybe, but then we start getting into the '70s and '80s, and I'm like, WTF? '70s and '80s porn is not "vintage." It's just out-of-date. Generally I'm opposed to federal regulation, but I DEMAND that Congress pass DOVPA ("Definition Of Vintage Porn Act") immediately to clarify the situation, e.g. "No nekkid pix post '69 shall be deemed "vintage," even if said '70s or '80s chick is wearing Victorian-style corsets 'n' stuff, which don't count. Violators mislabeling merely out-of-date porn instead as 'vintage' porn shall be fined three dollars, and publicly flogged by a tranny with lipstick going WAY over the lips. So mote it be."

Even a simple "safety stop" of 1 min at 10 feet will dramatically lower the risk of DCS, but ESAs are for things like "out-of-air" situations. The rules for ESAs are, so far as I know, as given earlier -- hand, follow, bubble.

The best scenario for DCS is to plan your dive "deep, then slope up". Unfortunately, most divers can't be "regulars" on their dives, and won't be able to plan better than the boat's divemaster.

468 30 years old is considered vintage, sorry but it's the sad reality Posted by: The Dude If that's the world I must live in, then let me off! Seriously, "vintage" should not refer strictly to "a set number of years before the present," but should take into account cultural context and artistic ethos. A "vintage toy" from 1984 (30 years old! vintage!) is a toy made of plastic in a Chinese factory. That just will never cut it, vintageness-wise. Starting in the '80s in particular, objects became not just "mass produced" but chintzily and poorly mass produced, so that nothing from the last 30 years prior to today will ever acquire the kind of panache and significance that a one-of-a-kind or handmade item from the REAL old days has. Similarly, the definition of "vintage" porn should take into account the hard-to-pin-down dividing line between when porn was considered taboo/risqué/underground/racy, and later when it became mass-produced and commonplace and not really risqué at all any more. The line was crossed sometime in the '70s or '80s, and nothing will ever be the same again, and consequently nothing of more recent manufacture will ever acquire the antiquarian mana of the stuff from "the time before."

475 470 The Dude I was talking to a guy the other day who has a cherry '67 Chevelle. He referred to it as a "vintage ride," or as a "classic car." I agreed. But then the discussion turned to later cars, and this guy, who is heavily into the vintage car scene, concurred that cars from the '80s and '90s will NEVER EVER acquire the same value or pride of ownership associated with older cars, simply because cars post '80-ish are just plain ol' ugly, uninspired, bland, clone-like, derivative, etc. etc. Even 100 years from now, a '60s (or older) car will be deemed or must greater beauty, value, and historical significance as compared to a (vintage or even "antique" by then) '80s or later car. It's not just the age. It's the design. It's the culture. It's the rarity.

Mr. Weinstein then revealed his secret project about the gun rights group. “I shouldn’t say this, but I’ll tell it to you, Howard,” he said. “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this head-on. And they’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”

Posted by: the snarkster at January 16, 2014 01:33 AM (jsmDz)"

On a pure barbarity scale, the Apaches were worse.  Also, man for man the Apaches were better fighters.  The Comanches, though were a more effective fighting force.  That is because they were so into horses.  Before an Indian revolt in 1600, the Spanish were careful to only allow geldings in Indian territory.  After the revolt, Indians had breeding horses and sold or traded them around.  The Comanches, who were living in Wyoming at the time, really took to horse breeding.  Other tribes would buy Comanche horses and the Comanches were happy to sell off their lesser horses, keeping the best for themselves.  Each Comanche warrior would have a string of horses so that he could ride one for a while and then change horses before they got too tired.  This allowed them to move quickly and show up in force where they were not expected, a tactic that worked as well for Comanche raids as it did for Viking raids.  Having a string of horses was also handy for carrying off loot and captives before any effective response could be mounted.

With their dramatically increased military effectiveness, the Comanche increased their range substantially, eventually reaching the Gulf of Mexico where they encountered the Karankawa Indians.  When the Comanche learned that the Karankawa were cannibals, they exterminated them.

530 Ah yes, because the technology underlying firearms, which has been with us for centuries and is used in myriad applications beyond weaponry, is going to be magically erased from human knowledge.

This kind of mentality seems to go hand in hand with the idiots who think much of modern technology sprang out of nowhere suddenly after WWII, despite having a very well documented trail of discovery and application of the underlying principles. I've met people who geneuinely believed humans could never have developed integrated circuits for themselves. These people couldn't accept the idea that there were humans vastly more intelligent than them, who understood the technology they were pioneering that these fools still found baffling decades later.

If you could magically erase every firearm from the planet overnight along with the specific knowledge of their design and production, inside of a few days engineers and machinists would well along in developing the concept anew from scratch. It is just too obvious and every aspect applicable in so many places. Would even a day go by before somebody wondered to themselves, "Why has a contained chemical explosion not been used to propel a projectile for offensive purposes?"

The engineers of the 20s-30s were probably smarter pound for pound than the majority today.  They exerted their will on materials in the span of their careers using their brains not a microprocessors' to do preliminary material stress factoring.  There was also less "voluntary stupidity" extant.

There is stuff out there.
We went up into Pa. on Tuesday to go to Gander Mt and look around.
I got the impression that their primary customer base is Maryland residents crossing the line to shop.
And.....didn't see a single box of 22 on the shelf while we were there either.

I wish there were numbers available as to the amount of ammo that has been absorbed by the US population in the last three years.
It must be an astonishingly large amount per person.
