Gotta head out early so you'll have to create your entertainment with these scraps, some duct tape and a lighter.
A Lefty Millennial Re-Discovers Communism
Or as Jesse A. Myerson titled his essay in Rolling Stone, "Five Economic Reforms Millennials Should Be Fighting For". Which calls for guaranteed jobs and pensions, state-owned banks and major assets and this particular real estate investment technique:
3. Take Back The Land
Ever noticed how much landlords blow? They don't really do anything to earn their money. They just claim ownership of buildings and charge people who actually work for a living the majority of our incomes for the privilege of staying in boxes that these owners often didn't build and rarely if ever improve. In a few years, my landlord will probably sell my building to another landlord and make off with the appreciated value of the land s/he also claims to own - which won't even get taxed, as long as s/he ploughs it right back into more real estate.
Yeah I'd like to see more details on this 'just claim ownership of buildings' step since in my experience the transfer of a big load of cash always seemed to happen before my claim of ownership was recognized.
Myerson seems to think this is all some sort of brand new modern socialism and Jonah Goldberg has some fun with him pointing out that nearly everything Myerson calls for is straight out of the Soviet Union's constitution.
One wonders why he bothered to single out landlords, since he calls for the state appropriation of, well, everything. Why? Because "hoarders blow," and he doesn't mean folks who refuse to throw away their Kentucky Fried Chicken buckets and old Sharper Image catalogs. He means successful people who "hoard" the wealth that rightly belongs to all of us.Apparently "blowing" is an open warrant to undo the entire constitutional order. If only someone had told the founders.
In the ensuing kerfuffle, Myerson, whose Twitter hashtag is "#FULLCOMMUNISM," seemed shocked that any of his ideas sounded Soviet to his critics. Andrew McCoy, a conservative blogger, offered the specific citations for Myerson's proposals in the Soviet constitution. I suspect this was news to Myerson, but even if not, I bet he doesn't care. It is a permanent trope of the left that its ideas failed because we didn't try hard enough. This time is always different.
But you see Myerson's reforms - unlike everything that ever came before - are fortified with electrolytes. [Makes the there you go gesture]
But Of Course: 'Bandit' Doomsday Prepper Arrested on Weapons Charges
We covered Tyler Smith and his plans to loot and pillage you after a disaster last year. Well you'll be shocked shocked to learn that Mr. 'Call me Humongous' Smith has a nasty past:
He also bragged for the camera about his plans to raid and loot other doomsday preppers' supplies when the end times came. "All your shiny AR's your high powered .308 rifles, your 50,000 rounds of ammo are all going to be ours", Smith warned.Pierce county investigators say it was those claims, and Smith's brazen use of firearms on camera that landed him back in jail. "What led us to this guy was himself. He put himself on TV and in newspaper articles and he did things that scared the neighbor," said Troyer.
Smith is a level one sex offender following his conviction in King county in 2009, but he has not registered with law enforcement since his move to Pierce county. Troyer said he could face an additional charge of failing to register as a sex offender.
Harvey Weinstein: I'm Unclear on the Constitution and Would Like to Lose a Lot of Money
Which is why he's going to make a movie that will 'destroy the NRA'.
Mr. Stern asked Mr. Weinstein on Wednesday whether he owned a gun. The Hollywood heavyweight replied that he did not and never would. "I don't think we need guns in this country. And I hate it," the producer said. "I think the NRA is a disaster area."Mr. Weinstein then revealed his secret project about the gun rights group. "I shouldn't say this, but I'll tell it to you, Howard," he said. "I'm going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we're going to take this head-on. And they're going to wish they weren't alive after I'm done with them."
The shock jock asked whether the film was going to be a documentary. Mr. Weinstein said no, that it would be a "big movie like a 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.'"
Car Thieves Stymied by New Anti-Theft Device
Which the manufacturer calls a 'manual transmission'. Maybe it's like The Club or something.
Springfield police say three men who jumped a food delivery driver also wanted to steal his car, but ran into a major problem -- none of them knew how to operate a manual transmission.
Lesser Known But Special Places
This popped on my playlist a week or two ago and Bookworm explains the story behind the song here which adds a poignancy to the lyrics.
Yahoo group. That is all.

IOW, he's FOS. If he couldn't hire a security team that had guns he could fire via proxy, he's sure as s*** would get a gun if the need arose.
So the fascist actually would get armed if the wrong fascist beat him to power first.

Hey Gingy!
CAC, I think it's a problem of definition. If you accept that jibberish has no meaning, then language cannot be jibberish since it has meaning. If we accept a Darwinian evolution and discount God/creationism, then yes, there is no reason a particular sound had to mean a particular thing. We would sound like so much jibber-jabber to a Paleolithic cave-dweller, I'm sure. On the other hand, if you believe in a Platonic ideal, then any given language is just a shadow representation of the universal ideal language.
In any case--jibberish that comes to have an accepted meaning is no longer jibberish, it has become language.

I'm not hyper-knowledgeable, one difference between Matt Yglesias and I is the inability to count myself an expert on a topic with a nickle's worth of practical knowledge.
That said as a history guy i have pondered over the years on it.
The earliest language I have been able to decipher is some Etruscan *maybe* it's hard but you can see some patterning.
If I understood math better I'd possibly pursue it to some sense of knowing, rather than simply ruminating.

Apparently "caballus" was vulgar-Latin for "worthless horse" and the first knights were called "cavaliers" as a joke.
Centuries later there's a term for high courtly manners called "Chivalry"

I tend to agree actually, they will throw tantrums but they will also die the key is to be away from mass.
The epiphany you had is part of why I modified my position on drug legalization. I can't make them engage in principled restoration of liberty or welfare reform. I can hopefully empower them to isolate and freeze themselves perhaps if lucky overdosing prior to genetic issue and cleanse on a long enough timeline wheat from chaff.
It's my hope anyway.

The other example is the anti-gun idiots. Don't they realize what a society without guns looks like? We've only had them on this planet for tens of millennia. Drop yourself into Europe in 600 AD or 1600 AD, there isn't much difference between the two societies. The rich 1% use professional fighters to exploit everyone else. It was only the gun, which gave any average individual the chance to level the playing field against professional men of violence, that changed all of that. "Imagine a world without guns", yea, OK, I'm doing that, and guess what? It's a world where you are face down in your own blood as my men at arms and I take turns raping your daughter to death. A world where such a thing happening isn't rare, as it is today, at least in the West, but commonplace: that's your world without guns. Enjoy it, asshole.

I think it was the English longbow that swung England onto a path of greater freedom and rights for the peasantry. English Lords could die from arrows just as had Foreign Lords. I think the Gentry came more and more to realize they could only push the peasantry so far. It would be bad form to get your ass killed after raping the peasant women.
This is why France and England went different directions in regards to the rights of Peasants.

Ever noticed how much writers blow? They don't really do anything to earn their money. They just claim ownership of words and charge people who actually work for a living the majority of our incomes for the privilege of staying informed about things or learn about ideas that these owners often didn't create and rarely if ever improve.

Most were already employed doing hard physical labor, so lower classes would probably be more capable of learning the bow. The thing is that he actually wanted to play himself in Team America. Parker and Stone turned him down because they didn't think it would work as well if they had him.
Matt Damon also wanted to portray himself but it was determined he wouldn't be lifelike enough.

In a male social behavior, Weaponry and the skill to use it marks a man as at least an equal.

I'd be inclined to think that it was the other way around - that England always had a much higher percentage of free peasants (yeomen) who were expected to be able to fight and bear arms (this went at least as far back as the early 13th century, I believe, and possibly has roots in the Anglo-Saxon fyrd, though who exactly made up the latter is subject to debate), and it the existence of the pool of free, armed peasants that allowed the English rulers to field large numbers of bowmen.
Posted by: Grey Fox at January 16, 2014 09:49 PM (U6f9K)
Could be, but i'd have to hear more along this vein. I do know the English REQUIRED their men be armed, and the French OUTLAWED arms for their peasantry.
One reason among others why the French had a socialist revolution.

Well the big thing I'm seeing on that article is well no shit they are looking to distance themselves from Windows 8. Just look at the advertisements for it that they have been running for the past few months. Do they say Windows 8? Nope, everything is "The New Windows," because "Windows 8" is poison. I mean have you ever heard of advertising a product and not mentioning its real name? The only thing sadder than their strategy now is when Vista was flopping hard and they did those "Microsoft Brown" commercials where they reveal Surprise you're actually using Vista, isn't it great!

Do you have a source for battle field tactics using ancient weapons? I've seen bits of clips of people sparring with sword and shield but I've not seen any discussion of any one dominate weapon or tactic and what the counter tactic or weapon would be. I've seen hints of countering mounted troops.

Hand to hand combat in colonial times as in "The Last of the Mohicans" as opposed to the stylized oriental martial arts. I'm thinking more along the lines of the combat scenes in "The 300". Short sword vs pike or spear. Up thread was mentioned heavy armored cav verses hordes of light cav with bow and arrow (and rope? to dismount the knights?)
Napoleon made a big deal out of maneuver, to bring certain elite units to bear on less well trained opposition.
I'm just trying to get it in my head what it looked like to the guy in the front line holding the spear/shield/sword, and organized units (Roman or Greek) marching in formation into the melee.

Then just get a Banquet pot pie. They're slightly smaller but much lower in calories. Unless you have a fetish for flaky crusts, they are just as good as Marie Callendar's, but about 1/4 the price. Also, I have found the filling for the Marie Callendar's to be much soupier than the Banquet filling, so for me Banquet is a better solution all-around.
So I just get two Banquets instead of one Marie Callendar's. I get 40% more product with about 10% fewer calories, at 1/2 the price.

Tyler Smith isn't smart enough to realize that it's not a good idea to brag about being a predator until Civilization actually ends. (In fact, a really smart predator wouldn't brag about it at all. Does a fox stand outside a henhouse and bark and strut around because boy, just wait, that hen is gonna be dead meat soon? No, he waits until the time is right and goes in and kills.)
Smith is just another stupid knob who broadcast his sick fantasies to the world because in our day and age, everyone from Martin Bashir to Philly Cheesefucker feels the need to broadcast their sick fantasies to the world. When the rule of law is gone, the real badasses - who are operating under the radar now - will chop the Tyler Smiths into mincemeat.

"He'll be 20 this year, and in college. Maybe after the teen years, it will get better. There are signs and portents of such an occurrence."
I fought with my parents hammer and tongs in high school and came to appreciate them when I was in my 20's. My mom died when I was 25, though - just as I was discovering that that the traits which annoyed me so in high school were actually endearing and lovable.
I've seen the same pattern in my 20-something nephews - they get along with their parents now (especially since they are out of the house.)
I find teenagers so obnoxious now that it requires a real act of will to remember how I felt then. I think it's because you "feel" so mature and adult at 16, you're having thoughts and feelings you are sure NOBODY else has ever had - and you resent your parents for reminding you you're still a kid. (My mom would say "She's just going through a phase." How I hated that! It trivialized my deeply felt emotions about this guy or that friend. And a few years later, I looked back and said, "Yeah, mom was right. It really was just a phase."

Why not set up a Kickstarter to fund an indie movie about the NRA? Specifically, one about that incident in the '50's when they helped Black townsfolk in some small Southern town defend themselves against KKKlan night riders, who were working in cahoots with the country Sheriff and deputies? I don't remember the name of the town, but it's a pretty well-known incident, at least in the Rightosphere.
The Klan got wind of the fact the black folks were arming up, and organized a night ride (several deputies participating), to shoot up the home of the black leader involved. When they did so, they met fierce resistance, and several Klan members, including at least one of the deputies were shot. Nobody died. That ended the night riding, and shortly afterward, the sheriff abandoned his support of the Klan.
With a good screenplay, this could make for a damn good action movie, even if one had to use "no-name" actors. I know there are a number of writers amongst the Horde.

No-name actors are the best to work with from what I've read about directing/producing in Hollywood. Their egos are relatively small, they're eager to prove they can do the job, they have fresh talent, and they usually don't have an entourage of idiots making a crazy demands.
It's interesting to me that most of Stanley Kubrick's films had *no* actors who were very big at the time the movies were made (2001, A Clockwork Orange) or usually only one really big name (like Nicholson in The Shining).

Still, Spartacus gave him the clout to go on to Lolita and then Dr. Strangelove, and then the Kubrick legend really started to get rolling. Also, most of the big names we remember from Strangelove weren't actually that huge yet, as I understand it. Instead it was the film that helped make *those actors* bigger names.

Great point. My parents never tried to be my friends. They laid down the rules and since I had some spirit, I rebelled. So many parents today are "friends" with their kids...hell, if your "friends" have a nice house with a full fridge and you can bring your significant other home to spend the night (something that makes my flesh crawl - I can't imagine making out with my boyfriend in my childhood bedroom with my parents all cool with it and snoring away in the bedroom across the hall. Shit, if my goodbyes to my dates at the front door were too prolonged, my old man was there glaring away in the doorway), why leave?
If you can do everything - smoke pot, drink, sleep until 1 p.m. on Sunday mornings - at home in vastly greater comfort than you could do in some crappy studio apartment, well, hello, pajama boy. Mom and dad, you're my best friends and I'm cozy in the basement. I'm staying.

eh, like I said, my recollections are distant and I'm not enough a scholar of the Crusades to really offer a considered opinion on its political accuracy. It might be the Untouchables of Crusade movies, for all I know, but even knowing the glaring historical inaccuracies in the Untouchables it is still a very enjoyable movie.
My opinion is that if you like Gladiator, you won't regret seeing Kingdom of Heaven once.

I liked the car thread but it seemed to focus on the great cars we had or wanted. Mix some Click and Clack repair stuff in it to get LICP (Low Info Car People) involved and it may get a bigger following. (yes people asked and answered car repair questions) but a couple of repair questions (that could be submitted during the week*) in the post would make it known it was about Horde repair.

Either way, he flew forty-four (44) combat missions in the Pacific, was shot down and ditched at sea, probably knew his tropical isles better than you thought, and we are awfully small people for joshing around all day without crediting that heroic level of service. PJ had a helluva time arranging the financing for LOTR -- it was really "make or break" for the studio involved, and he had to make each one a success before the next one was entirely greenlit (though he'd had to shoot a bunch of stuff for later movies in the early-going 'cause he wasn't going to get to use the national forests twice). Being a successful bard of Middle-Earth, he figured he could milk it a bit and started talking about 2 Hobbit movies.....and so many execs started throwing offers at him, he said, "WTH, let's make it 3!"
So far, it seems to be working for him (although I hated a particular sequence in the 2nd....and, come to think of it, hate everything about Radagast in both).

The best thing I can say for him is that he sometimes knew when to shut up. I remember he was once on either CNN or Fox (most likely CNN, I'm sure he hated Fox) making some particulary stupid comments about troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thank God, there was a just-retired female Republican congressperson also on the panel (I forget her name) who was happy to put Gory Gore in his place for his stupid comments. Vidal just sat there with a look on his face like he was trying to ignore what she said, though it's obvious he heard it.

Victor David Hanson has a great story about having dinner once with him and Hanson's aunt. Vidal spent the dinner trying trying to drop literary quotes. Hanson's aunt, though, had memorized the works that he was trying to impress them when she was in school. So, whenever he quoted somebody, she'd just say "yes, it was" or correct him with "perhaps it was not." By the end of the meal, he was entirely beaten down.

Other senses seemed to have been heightened as a result (how he can hit a cat and a flying bird with a bow, or shoot a gun with accuracy)
But if you watch (once you know to look for it) there's a bunch of little hints, the one you can notice the most is how he "feels" things out with his foot to know where he's walking.

The Martin B-26/JM-1 Marauder had such epitaphs as The Flying Prostitute and "One a day in Tampa Bay." USAAF almost cancelled production until Jimmy Doolittle got his hands on the plane, figured it out, and showed it was possible to safely fly the plane on one engine.
Or deadly as in what it did to the Japanese. Such as the Battle of the Bismarck Sea where B-25s, Beaufighters, and A-20s sank or crippled eight transports and four of the eight escorting destroyers? Very few Japanese soldiers swam ashore from that drubbing and since they arrived without supplies, they became a greater drain on limited supplies. Assuming they survived the headhunters and cannibals.

(I love how the French has a blurb that says, "creamy blend of tomato and spices" when tomato paste is their fifth ingredient, after soybean oil, water, vinegar, and sugar).

Longhorn is in Santa Fe, NM and the nearest Ruby Tuesday is in San
Francisco. Ah geez.
Posted by: qdpsteve at January 16, 2014 09:26 PM (HVI5a)
eh. Ruby Tuesday's is basically overpriced Applebee's food.
Longhorn Steakhouse, don't have much experience with them. but not optimistic.
Longhorn began here in ATL, the original is still open for business. Quality food at a decent price.

American egalitarianism that "dame," which referred to a proper
noblewoman in the Old Country, became slang for just any chick in the
States.

I always thought it migrated here through gutter Deutsch .
Actually it migrated to England from French, dame = lady today but back in the day was for noblewomen.

It's centered on the 1/4" side when it goes in, and it's centered on the opposite face, too. Mind you, the ends of the bar need deburred, and the finish is horrid -- I only did this as a "proof of concept". But I'm absurdly pleased.

Just for that, I should make a little spitwad cannon and use torn-up caps to get the gunp......wait a second, I haven't seen caps in a while.....you know, those paper strips with little blisters containing a couple of specks of gunpowder? Are they still around?
How the hell are little snowflakes supposed to know anything useful about anything if they don't get exposed to basic stuff?

That's actually quite a relief. The fookin' Progs, with their "everything not compulsory is forbidden" schtick, are seriously on my nerves.

Yeah, cthulhu, I saw some a couple of years ago in a toy section. Of course, around here they still sell fireworks 2-3 times a year so there's a much better gp source. Or you could just buy black powder.
Or you could go completely old school and make your own. Charcoal -- no problem, bbq briquettes will work fine. Saltpeter (KNO3) you can get in garden centers; look for stump remover. Elemental Sulfur -- Not sure where to get that except it should be readily available on-line. If you happen to have a volcano handy nearby, you can usually find sulfur there.
The current standard composition for black powders are manufactured by pyrotechnicians was adopted as long ago as 1780.Proportions by weight are 75% potassium nitrate, 15% softwood charcoal, and 10% sulfur.

Or just take old paper or t-shirts, heat up some nitric acid with a bit of sulphuric on the cooktop, and dip 'em, then put 'em somewhere to dry......far, far away from your cooktop. Nitrocellulose has 3x the power of gunpowder by weight.

Nice -- 58% nitroglycerine, 37% nitrocellulose (guncotton), and 5% vaseline "for easy insertion".
