Overnight Open Thread (1-19-2014)
— Maetenloch

Intermittent internet all day so this ONT is about all I can burst out while the connection is still up.

Quote of the Day

Now the whole parable and purpose of these last pages, and indeed of all these pages, is this: to assert that we must instantly begin all over again, and begin at the other end. I begin with a little girl's hair. That I know is a good thing at any rate. Whatever else is evil, the pride of a good mother in the beauty of her daughter is good. It is one of those adamantine tendernesses which are the touchstones of every age and race. If other things are against it, other things must go down. If landlords and laws and sciences are against it, landlords and laws and sciences must go down. With the red hair of one she-urchin in the gutter I will set fire to all modern civilization.

  -- G. K. Chesterton, "What's Wrong with the World"

Lena Dunham in the Raw

Unretouched photos from her Vogue shoot versus what got published. Actually not that much fiddling by industry standards but a reminder that most magazine photos these days are a lie in some form or another.

2 And smoking dung.

Could be worse. Mrs. Chronda roped me into watching some mountain man reality show on the National Geographic Channel after that car auction the other day.

In one show, he was eating insect eggs out of elk poo because he was desperate for protein.

In the next show, he is battling an intestinal parasite.

Hmm. Coincidence?

President Barack Obama said that racial tensions may have softened his popularity among white voters within the last two years, according to a story posted on the New Yorker magazineÂ’s website today.

“There’s no doubt that there’s some folks who just really dislike me because they don’t like the idea of a black president,” Obama said in the article by David Remnick, appearing in the magazine’s Jan. 27 edition.

61 I kind of feel bad that it became this big thing to find the un-photoshopped pictures of Lena Dunham's Vogue shoot. She knows she's not that cute and she doesn't hide it---she dresses in the least flattering thing possible and finds ever more unlikely reasons to be naked on her show all the damn time. It's not that bad for her to have one set of flattering pictures floating around out there.

It's amazing to me how well-paid baseball players are given how non-famous baseball players seem to be. It's seems like a bunch of baseball players are getting insanely rich in a surprisingly low profile way. They were much more famous when I was young, but they make much more money now.

166 Last year Joe Mauer made $25.5M, 2nd highest paid baseball player in total earnings. (A-Rod was #1, I'll ignore him since his lack of endorsements is for other reasons.) Mauer made $25.5M - $23M in salary and $2.5M in endorsements. Johan Santana also made $25.5 - $24.5M in salary and only $1M in endorsements. Top 2 NBA players - Kobe and LeBron - had $34M and $42M in endorsement deals respectively. Top 2 NFL players - Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers - had $11M and $6M in endorsement deals. Top 2 in golf - Tiger and Phil - had $65M and $44M in endorsement deals. In soccer Ronaldo and Messi each had $21M in endorsement deals. Usain Bolt had $24M in endorsement deals. Endorsement money is a good proxy for fame since it's a method of monetizing fame.

192 I don't think many rich athletes turn down endorsement money when given an opportunity. And looking at that Forbes list there seems to be little correlation between high salaries and low endorsement. Those who can get the endorsement money seem happy to take it. Kobe makes $28M in guaranteed NBA salary. And $34M in endorsements. Fame is not the only factor of course. Mayweather is super famous and made $34M last year, but not a single dollar in endorsement money since he's a criminal thug that no business wants to partner with. Similarly A-Rod only made $500k last year in endorsements cause he's a disgraced cheat. Derek Jeter gets some good endorsement money - $9M. And Ichiro gets some good money back in Japan - $6M. So it's possible.

This is not ancient Rome, where the emperor played Calvinball with the succession.  The succession to the throne is governed by statute, and by law descends through the children of the reigning monarch, in order of birth (assuming eligibility based on religion, see next point).  Also, I believe that the monarch has to be in communion with the Church of England and cannot be married to a Roman Catholic, so no secret muslim converts or Papists are allowed.

You will have to forgive me for responding to the comment the way you wrote it, as opposed to the way you meant it.  What you want in your sentence is the conditional mood, which the verb "to wish" (even in all caps) does not express by itself.  "Wish she had" implies that she can, but didn't.  "Wish that she could have" explains that she cannot.

357 Aha, so you know a few of them? My dad lived in Venice from 1948 to 1964. Grandparents were in the house until the mid 90s. Didnt know anyone but saw it. Plus Dad & grandparents had interesting stuff to say about the zoot suit riots that came from people that had been there.

Being a DIY guy myself, I'm interested - what are you up to with that setup?

Posted by: StPatrick_TN at January 20, 2014 12:41 AM (un8zR)

Which setup? The mini-mill or the micro CNC?

The mini-mill is an outgrowth of researching 3D printers a year-and-some ago, and finding that they have significant limitations....but illustrate how far CNC has come (and how far plastic-squirting needs to go). The big problem with actually implementing CNC in real life is looking like not the electronics, steppers, lead screws, or software.....but, rather, brackets. Lots and lots of brackets. Pieces of metal that hold your motors and lead screws, and interface to real-world objects. So the plan is to piecemeal CNC the mini-mill by using it manually to make brackets. Oh, it's a HF http://tinyurl.com/28s88pp -- which is really a Sieg X2. Being a Sieg, it's coated in that horrible red greasy gel that I suspect is made of rendered political prisoners. It cleans off with kerosene, but -- being California -- you're supposed to treat used kerosene as toxic waste and hire people in space suits to remove it. [I'm going to WalMart to buy a tiki torch].

The micro-CNC is one of these -- http://tinyurl.com/nybl5hu -- and, good lord, I think I paid well less than half of that price!!!! Like, maybe, a third.

Anyway, let me continue with my jaw off the floor. The micro-CNC is a "proof-of-concept" dealio on the one hand, and on the other can be used to make very intricate small pieces. As an example, I'm thinking of making a Cthulhu-themed door-knocker. The problem I have with it is that the bits are like $22/ea, and if you're screwing around with 'em and using them on odd materials, you're going to be breaking/blunting them by the truckload (I've already melted one into acrylic). Whereas Dremel bits (1/8" shank) are cheaper than dirt.

Do yourself a favor and get familiar with G-code -- it's X-Y-Z plotting with glosses like movement speed and tool speed -- because you can use it to get a feel for how well your software is adapting what you want. For example, if you're getting a string of G1X1Y1Z1, G1X2Y1Z1, G1X3Y1Z1, G1X4Y1Z1 instead of G1X1Y1Z1, G1X4....then things aren't very efficient and you can end up with "the rhythm of the tool" being off. It's not so bad with mills, but can really suck on squirters.

I've been to HK twice; the flight isn't the deterring factor. One flight was a 26 hour adventure with no luggage.

Point being, if one wants to do the Gung Hey Fat Choy thing in HK, you're gawdamn going to be booked in advance with cushion on either end.

462 I went on Cathay, coach on one trip and business the next. It still blew chunks and dragged. Hmm, never flew with them before. My experience was Qantas from Los Angeles to Sydney. The first time in '97 and the second time in '99 were traditional flights; single screen with satellite monitors and a predetermined movie schedule. Those seemed like long flights. The last time in 2003 I flew up and back on two of Qantas' 747-400ERs with the screens on the seatbacks. Those flights seemed to go all too quickly.

In Pasadena, on days like that, they say the city forgot to make the rent payment on the mountains.

Thing is, Pasadena had hazy days like that a century ago, before there were many cars or serious industrial issues in LA County. There are even some journals of the early Spanish explorers commenting on the haze over the valleys. Smog made it worse but getting rid of it entirely would be a major feat of climate engineering.

I don't know if they can make that claim for Beijing.

471 It's just too uncomfortable to be cooped up in a small space that long. I do remember feeling just a hint of claustrophobia in my economy class seating, but at least I was always next to the window (I told the Qantas agent when I made my reservations that I was a bad flier and had to have a window seat). The only physical problem was a strong backache that developed about four hours into the journey home on the last run. A couple of Anacins and thirty minutes later, the pain was gone.

Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at January 19, 2014 10:41 PM (itCai)

472 I predict China is going to create some industrial zones with tunnels to allow the majority of the populace, employed in the vicinity, to never deal with going outdoors. It'll be like living on a big space station, except with gravity and you worry about the atmosphere leaking in rather than out.

Perhaps it will serve as a generational training ground for their orbital industrial plans.

It illustrates all-too-well that the EPA and the SCAQMD have long-since achieved the goals they were set up to do, and have no remaining purpose other than just dicking people around. "We'll micromanage people's lives until the air is more pristine than when there were just plants."

If I wanted to invest in a DRO, I could plug that back into the controller and theoretically solve the problem, but I have spent so much money on the white elephant that I am reluctant to spend any more time on it.
