Overnight Open Thread (1-23-2014)
— Maetenloch

Okay I checked the blog rule book and it turns out that speaking in tongues and handling serpents within the comments are not specifically prohibited. So there you go.

Coincidence: Hollywood's only conservative group is getting close IRS nonprofit scrutiny

Another Coincidence: James O'Keefe Group Being Audited by NY. Again.

Yet Another Coincidence: Dinesh D'Souza Indicted For Election Fraud

Still Another Coincidence: IRS Proposes New 501(c)(4) Rules That Just Happen to Cover Most Tea Party Groups

Judge Strikes Down Wisconsin's 'John Doe' Subpoenas

Secret investigations targeted coincidently at most prominent conservative groups in WI who can only now legally talk about their harassment. If you want to see what American fascism would look like, well this is it.

Von Spakovsky, who previously served on the Federal Elections Commission and at the U.S. Justice Department as counsel to the assistant attorney general, says the prosecution's seizure of electronic equipment and files and its demands for phone email and other records make the probe look like nothing more than a "witch hunt to intimidate conservative groups."

"What's even worse about this is the secrecy imposed by state law," von Spakovsky told Wisconsin Reporter. "Political speech is one of the most fundamental things protected by the First Amendment. No kind of investigation like this should be secret. Any organization that receives a subpoena like this ought to be able to make it public and go to court."

But speaking out could land a witness or a target in jail.

Wisconsin's John Doe law comes with secrecy oaths, and violators risk contempt of court charges.

JournoList Powers Activate: Matt Yglesias Joins Ezra Klein's New Media Thingy

All they need is Dave Weigel and they'll have the Juicebox Mafia back together once again.

In the years surrounding the 2008 presidential election, The Washington Post employed Mr. Weigel; and The American Prospect and then The Post made his peer Ezra Klein into a multiplatform superman of blogging-twittering-column writing. The Atlantic and then Think Progress - the online arm of the liberal Center for American Progress Action Fund - transformed Matt Yglesias from a formerly bored Harvard kid who hated reporting into an Internet star.

Fighting Homelessness by Giving Homeless People Houses

A program in Salt Lake City decided that it would be smarter -- and more humane -- to spend $11K/year each to house 17 chronically homeless people and provide them with social workers than it would be to waste the average of $16,670/year per person to imprison them and treat them at emergency rooms.

Well this might help if homelessness is their actual problem and not just a side effect of other deeper, not-so-easily-fixed problems.

Teen Employment and the Minimum Wage: 60 Years of Experience

Okay this chart is a bit hard to figure out but the blue zones are when the minimum wage was raised, the black lines are the trend in teen employment before the wage hike and the red lines are the trend after the minimum wage hike. And in nearly every single case teen employment took a dive after a minimum wage raise. But hey - maybe the next time will be totally different or something.

No (New) Semi-Automatic Handguns in California

Ruger and Smith & Wesson have already announced they won't be selling any new models in California and it looks like Glock may soon follow. Why?

Well CA requires all handgun models to be submitted for 'safety testing' to the CA DOJ and only approved models can be sold. Now technically once a model has been approved it stays on the list but make nearly any change to it (finish, grips, sights) and it has to be re-approved. And in May of last year CA Attorney General Kamala Harris declared micro-stamping of cartridges to be a 'viable technology' and started enforcing a 2007 law that added micro-stamping to the features required to be on the DOJ approved list.

And it's not just trivial micro-stamping - the law requires that the gun's make, model and serial number be stamped on the case in two places during firing. This isn't a simple mod and would require re-designing and re-testing every pistol model to be sold in California as well as changes in manufacturing. Ruger and S&W apparently ran the numbers and decided the CA market simply wasn't worth the hassle. And furthermore they won't be renewing the existing DOJ approvals so come 2016 you won't be able to buy a new semi-auto pistol from them at all in CA.

Don't live in California? Well don't be too content - this is an idea that will spread to other states if CA pulls it off. Let's hope the major gun manufacturers have the balls to do a Barrett boycott of California in response.

Ball Lightning Caught on Video and Spectrograph For First Time

That is what Ping Yuan and co-workers from Northwest Normal University in Lanzhou, China, now report. They had set up spectrometers on the remote Qinghai Plateau of northwest China to investigate ordinary lightning, which is frequent in this region. During one late-evening thunderstorm in July 2012, they saw ball lightning appear just after a lightning strike about 900 meters from their apparatus and were able to record a spectrum and high-speed video footage of the ball.

The recorded glow was about 5 meters across-the actual size of the ball was much smaller-and it changed from white to reddish during the second or so that it lasted. Although the darkness prevented the researchers from estimating the ball's altitude, they saw it drift horizontally for about 10 meters and ascend about 3 meters. Yuan says that this is the first time ball lightning has been seen to be created by a cloud-to-ground lightning strike.

And based on its spectrogram it appears to be vaporized soil that interacts with oxygen in the air.

4 Bad Movies That Were Hilariously Sure of a Sequel

And no it doesn't include 'Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League' which I would still pay to see.

Amazingly, the planned sequel to Masters of the Universe somehow became Cyborg starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. It was part of a circuitous plan by Cannon Films to make a Spider-Man movie. You see, Cannon owned the film rights to Spider-Man back then, because the 1980s were a period of time in which Marvel thought it was a good idea to sell one of their most popular characters to the studio responsible for American Ninja and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. Cannon figured they would take the profits from their windfalling, world-conquering He-Man movie and its subsequent sequel and use them to fund an equally lucrative Spidey movie. In addition, Masters was supposed to reinvigorate sales of the He-Man toy line, which was dwindling rapidly into Christmas-ruining bargain bins across America.

But when Masters of the Universe failed to perform, it sort of ruined all of those Spider-Man plans.

5 "The “Housing First” program’s goal was to end chronic homelessness in Utah within 10 years. Through 2012, it had helped reduce the 2,000 people in that category when it began by 74 percent." I'm sorry, but I don't believe this. There's a big problem with bums in SLC, and that's not counting the illegals that they refuse to roust.

41 [giving houses to homeless people] might help if their homelessness is their actual problem and not just a side effect of other deeper, not-easily-fixed problems. It will save zero money because the state of Utah will never actually reduce the $16,000-whatever dollars it's spending on prisons and hospitals. Those expenditures are not made on a per-vagrant basis. They are paid annually, regardless of how many vagrants they deal with. Those expenses will never vanish. Utah will simply add the $11,000 (which will really be $100,000) to the $16,000. This is what government calls "saving money."

84 ""Trying to influence elections through bogus campaign contributions is a serious crime. Today, Mr. D'Souza finds himself on the wrong side of the law," FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos said in a statement.

"The Federal Election Campaign Act was written to limit the influence of money in elections; the FBI is fiercely committed to enforcing those laws to maintain the integrity of our democratic process."

87 Unless you've actually been homeless, it's not so easy to parse how to solve the problem or if there's a problem that can be fixed.

I was homeless once through the confluence of a series of incidents that technically I could've over come but the next incident then knocked away one or more of my possible solutions until finally I was unemployed, broke, my car was broke, I got kicked out of where I was staying, I was in a place where I knew no one to ask aid from. (although I could've gone to the state but at the time didn't want to take that option. I did later on after going to a different state.)

At each stage of the events, it looked like I could solve them and remain housed, fed and mobile but they occurred with sufficient rapidity and finality that I was unable to effect any of them.

I then took a journey that led me to another state due to my inability to travel further. (my feet had become a mess due to a fungal infection, bad shoes, bad socks and wet weather)

It's there in a homeless shelter that I observed that there's multiple reasons for men (and it's predominantly men although a disproportionate amount of money is spent on homeless women as they many times have children).

1) substance abuse
2) attitude dysfunction
3) bad circumstances (me)
4) willful

many times it's a combination of one or more of those.

That is why no matter the attempts or the money spent (although it's never enough) the situation persists.

Many of those circumstances are brought on by the persons choices but sometimes not 100% because being in the lowest class of all brings pressure and problems all their own.

I was able to get out because once my fee got better, I was employable but only barely. Being homeless in and of itself is a bar to gaining a place to live even if you have the money. I was sober and sane. I can't imagine what would've happened if I hadn't been or how those that aren't, cope.

We have failed as a society if this problem cannot be resolved effectively without imprisoning the majority of those afflicted.

A stating point is when an narrowly elected State Attorney General decides that his personal "feelings" are sufficient to allow him to violate his oath to defend the State Constitution as written after less than two weeks in office, will actively work against the law as passed, and essentially publicly announces that he is more important than the majority of the citizens in his State.

He-Man movie and its subsequent sequel and use them to fund an equally lucrative Spidey movie. In addition, Masters was supposed to reinvigorate sales of the He-Man toy line, which was dwindling rapidly into Christmas-ruining bargain bins across America.

But when Masters of the Universe failed to perform, it sort of ruined all of those Spider-Man plans.

You know Masters of the Universe might not have bombed if they had actually made a He-Man movie instead of that generic sci-fi aliens fight a war on earth movie that they did instead.

The next time will be totally different.

Because, at least around here, the kinds of jobs that were teen jobs when I was a teen are now instead being filled by:

(a) Illegals working under the table for cash, which will not be altered in the slightest degree by any change in the official minimum wage, and

(b) Older displaced workers in the Obamaconomy who have been downsized, rightsized, rationalized, laid off, cut back or otherwise outta work, who have lost part or all of their savings, and are ready to take anything they can find. These folks will not be displaced by teens because they are desperate. Teens flake off, oversleep and quit with no notice. The grayhairs show up and they bloody well work. Employers notice this stuff.

There has been a slow but steady trend of getting police departments hooked on the flow of federal handouts. Getting around a manufacturers' boycott would just be more of the same.

The Pentagon would over-order certain handguns and then those would be promptly sold off as unused surplus to PDs via the Law Enforcement Assistance Act or some similar gig.

They call them Rice Christians in China.
Sing a few songs say a few prayers listen to the crazy gwailo preacher and then get a bowl of rice.

the Salvation Army does that too. And btw they are a good cause if you want your money to go to the needy and not the preacher.

They practice the ideal of those in charge live lives of modest means and they put their money in providing shelter and food for those in need.

They helped me a couple times. I try to contribute but these days on a fixed income that's become difficult. so I'll bang a drum, ring a bell for them here.

They take food, clothing, furniture, and other items. Small donations gratefully received. There should be one near just about everybody.

They also don't push the religion on you. They let you know it's there and they try to help you regardless of how you believe.

Good folks. God bless them.

It's not a place I know super well, just had some friends and family events in that region. Area just seemed fairly quiet and nice. Not too touristy. Seemed safe. Downside is hurricanes. But I was never there for that. Beaches were nice. Clean. Just seemed a pretty laid back area. Enough development that I didn't think I was in the boonies. Seemed like beach areas where most of the people actually lived there, so not dominated by tourists.

No Christian is ever going to say that. We are well aware of our sinful nature.

This is something the atheist try to project on Christians all the time because that's what they hear when Christians preach about how we ALL HAVE SINNED AND COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD.

In their rabbit assed minds they hear someone saying that  and that they don't include themselves in that scenario. But they do.
No Christian puts on this holier than thou attitude like it's claimed that's what those who feel guilt or anger at the message try to claim the messenger is saying so as to dilute and denigrate the message.

It's a lie. I ask anyone to quote me a Christian saying anything like that. Ever.

342 From the link to a 2012 SLTrib article I posted up thread: On Wednesday, the LDS Church posted a statement on its website saying that "the church does not prohibit the use of caffeine" and that the faith's health-code reference to "hot drinks" "does not go beyond [tea and coffee]." A day later, the website wording was slightly softened, saying only that "the church revelation spelling out health practices ... does not mention the use of caffeine." Same goes for the church's two-volume handbook, which stake presidents, bishops and other LDS leaders use to guide their congregations. It says plainly that "the only official interpretation of 'hot drinks' (D&C 89:9) in the Word of Wisdom is the statement made by early church leaders that the term 'hot drinks' means tea and coffee." That doesn't mean church leaders view caffeinated drinks as healthy. They just don't bar members from, say, pounding a Pepsi, downing a Dew or sipping a hot chocolate.

346 That said, I've eaten on the BYU campus and could not find a caffeinated drink in the cafeteria. So I think it's like any religion. There are ranges of observance and interpretation. For example, some LDS folks will not cook on Sundays. We even rented a home that had a "Sabbath" setting on the oven. But others will.

For example, we are winning the abortion argument, but we've been doing that through persuasion, not court orders from Dread Pirate Roberts and his ilk.

The persuasion comes first--then you get public support and majorities with which to legislate.

United States Marine Corps Aviation is the air component of the United States Marine Corps. Marine aviation has a very different mission and operation than its ground counterpart, and thus, has many of its own histories, traditions, terms, and procedures.

I'm all onboard with that.  I grew up outside of Memphis, so my taste automatically leans to Memphis BBQ.

UTK jammed me on a scholarship, and I haven't liked them since.

I was an alternate for the Whittle Scholarship (I don't even know if they still give it out), which paid literally for everything: tuition, books, fees, room, board, and came with a stipend.  I wasn't upset that I didn't get the scholarship.  I was pissed because my prize for being an alternate was...$600 toward tuition for the first two semesters.  That's $300/semester, not $600 for each.  If they had just offered me full tuition (like the rest of the SEC) I would have gone there.

Oh and did I mention the vulnerability to surge tides, storm tides and hurricanes (although they do go inland as it is)?

Concrete doesn't last long on soft ground. They have to have miles and miles of piles and no smiles just to get a stable platform. No guarantee how long it would last.

603 I'm really proud of myself. Today, I replaced my power door lock actuator for the driver door. The bad news -- I tried to do this in-between our October and November road trips, and couldn't get it done in time, so I've been living without a power door lock on that door since November. The big issue is that you have to work through two little holes that aren't terribly convenient, unbolt the window track and wedge it out of the way, and take this little alignment finger and slide it along a plastic track to get in there, while ensuring that the moving paddle slides along the back edge of a plate until properly situated so that you can push it away from the plate to engage a knob connected to the actual door lock. Once it's engaged, you have to hold it there and put in three tiny M3 screws....which don't have beveled tips, so if you're not exactly lined up with the hole, they just stop. Of course, you could pull the widget back a little bit, so the screw will drop in when positioned correctly, but then you risk unhooking the paddle from the knob.

Oh, and I don't have a lift or anything, so I get to do this while hunched over imitating a contortionist. Also, one of the three screws requires that you hold a mirror inside the door to see it.....that would be with your other hand.

Anyone closely reading my first paragraph (HA!), probably already figured out what I did today. I took a cheapie Dremel-ish thing and filed a point on three M3 screws -- because then they'd self-center after dropping in the hole once I was close. After that, I changed them for the factory screws one-at-a-time, with threadlocker.

What is this garage of which you speak? I wish I had one...but it would probably be jammed with crap as you say. Yes the Subi does have some things in unexpected places with the horizontally opposed 4, but it is actually pretty straightforward.  It's easier to work on than the Quad 4 that was in That Damn Pontiac.

So far the major maintenance has been the timing belt (scheduled at 105K) and the head gaskets (unscheduled but a common Subi problem, they say only on engines prior to 2001 but mine is a 2003) and both things were done in the driveway in a couple of days (the heads took a while because they had to go to the machine shop for the valve job while they were off the trucklet anyway) with tools I already had on hand.

It is possible to change head gaskets without removing the motor from the vehicle, BTW, you just have to install the head bolts into the head before lifting the head into place.

I don't disagree....I was merely pointing out that throwing out "devil's advocate" statements might get people in the habit of arguing with you....which is not necessarily a good thing when you're there to firmly tell people to "knock it the fuck off". I'm a big fan of Ace and this weirdly-tottering blog empire he has built, but have seen a number of banninations that I regretted even as they occurred, and since. Maybe PSAs should be Johnny Coldcuts while devil's advocate comments should be Rick Tempest or something, I dunno.

I think it's great that Ace "walks among his followers" in the comments. I think he's writes at an amazing level that is even better for being inconsistent -- in that he has gifted us with some abso-fucking-lutely awesome ones.....and you can always skip over the ones that are subpar. It would be a great loss to the blogosphere if he were consistent, as his genius posts are the epitome of the form.

But there are good folks who were here and are gone, and who are too damned proud about the "slight" of being banned to reach out to reconcile and come back.....and I'm saddened. I'm more-than-a-bit miffed that they're so stiff-necked that they won't try, and I suspect Ace has enough trouble in his life that reviewing past situations should be somewhere lower than shoveling snow with a teaspoon on his priorities list.....but maybe some safety guards on the banhammer would help.

Given the scarcity of Subarus in junkyards leads me to believe they are tough to kill. Keep up on the scheduled maintenance, at 105K this means a timing belt change. One of the more important things, believe it or not, is to keep the battery clean. That is thought to contribute to the head gasket problem.

Yours is a Phase 1 (DOHC) engine that leaks internally when the gaskets fail, mine is a Phase 2 (SOHC) that leaked externally. If you have intermittent overheating problems or bubbles in your reservoir tank you have bad head gaskets, but it is likely on a car as old as yours that the original gaskets have already been changed out.

More info on the head gasket issues here: http://tinyurl.com/yglsm9w

Keeping up with the planned maintenance schedule is the trick to keeping any car in good shape, there are some lemons out there to be sure but one surefire way to turn a good car into a marginal one or a marginal car into scrap is to not maintain it properly. It's not uncommon for Subis to hit the 100K mark several times over if they are properly maintained. I plan on driving mine till the wheels fall off of it, then I'm going to glue them back on and drive it some more.

I get 23.5-24 MPG on my Baja as long as I keep an eye on tire pressure, over time they tend to bleed down (all of them the same amount at the same time). I haven't had to do much unplanned maintenance with it (02 sensor and the head gaskets, that's about it), I've had it for 3 years now and so far I'm happy with it.

It's easier that way. The engine is fore-and-aft mounted so you have a head on the drivers side and one on the passenger side, both of them pretty close to the frame rails. You have enough room to get the valve covers off and back the head bolts out all the way, but not enough room to pull the head bolts out of the heads without hitting the frame rails. Intake and exhaust are drop dead simple on them, though.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at January 23, 2014 10:01 PM (yh0zB)

677 and the reason it's easiest to go in from the bottom is there isn't anything in the way. Up top you have all of the normal reservoirs and brake boosters and assorted stuff to deal with.

IIRC, there is a 2000-year-old witticism in Latin that says something about normal pregnancies lasting 9 months, but ones right after marriage frequently being much shorter. It's not a new issue.

On the flip side, it does beg the question of whether March would have been a better month.

That's funny, my previous vehicle was a 1982 Dodge Rampage that I ran to death, it developed a vacuum leak somewhere that I never was able to track down so the carberator would drizzle fuel in the throat at idle. I finally got tired of trying to find it and got the Subaru instead. Sometimes I miss that old Rampage...until I turn on the AC (which the Dodge didn't have) on a hot day...or I realize I haven't had the hood open in a couple of months other than to check the fluids...then I don't miss it so much.

I can't argue with you on that, but seeing how the state has no interest in punishing this evil man, maybe the Eric "Black Power!" Holder might be interested in a Federal Hate crime prosecution against whitey. I would certainly think that a hate crime would qualify as moral turpitude. Of course, I'm not holding my breath on any of this.

742 742 You really don't get it, do you? The one-and-only "hate crime" is being in the wrong party. The rest is personal, a joke, a misquote, prosecutorial overreach, a "ginned-up controversy", utter bullshit, or "what difference does it make?" You can diss anyone and anything in the most vile fashion imaginable while committing heinous crimes, and if you're a member of the anointed, it ain't "hate".

You have got to be fucking kidding. Holder is a moral vacuum attached to a racist grievance machine, encompassed within a partisan shell. The rule of law is nowhere to be found in the man, and if a spark of decency ever penetrated to his corrupt and fetid core, it would be immediately smothered by his overweening self-interest. If I could reach out, like VMS in "Stranger in a Strange Land", and tumble someone out of this universe, Holder and ValJar would be the first two to go.

Why do I have to be kidding?

I said I couldn't aruge with your position (hence I agree with it) and that I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Holder to seek a prosecution.

Because you said, "maybe the Eric "Black Power!" Holder might be interested in a Federal Hate crime prosecution against whitey" -- which posits it as a possibility even if you wouldn't hold your breath. The only way this could occur is if Eric Holder woke up as a different person tomorrow -- which would be as much a direct influence of the Almighty as the conversion of Paul. If you're holding out such a possibility as anything short of miraculous....."you must be kidding."

770 Ruger and Smith & Wesson have already announced they won't be selling any new models in California and it looks like Glock may soon follow. Why? Really for the reason STI figured out a long time ago: if people really want to keep hassling you till it's not worth your while to do business there, get out while it's still a statement your customers respect, don't hang around groveling till you get practically kicked out.
