What the US Olympic Team Will Be Wearing in Sochi

620openinguniform

These uniforms were designed by Ralph Lauren who seemed to have been channeling stoner chic and the July 4th issue of Crocheting Monthly. No wonder the State Department has warned US athletes not to wear their uniforms outside the Olympic Village.

But it could be worse - here are the Norwegian Olympic uniforms. These apparently were inspired by dazzle camouflage and the best of modern gulag attire. I guess the oft-repeated factoid that Scandi languages have no word for shame really is true.

Quote of the Day - Inter-level Combat Edition

yup. The truth is that I'm a socon too.
We are arguing here basically in D&D terms about a 7th level socon versus a 14th ( "name" ) level socon.

i think most conservative-leaning people are probably at least 4th level socons.

Update on the Grantland-Dr. V Story

The AZ Republic titles the article "Friend blames timing of Gilbert inventor's suicide on fear of impending article" but when when you read it, it quotes Gerri Jordan (Dr. V's business partner and former girlfriend) as basically describing Essay Vanderbilt (Dr. V) as a walking suicide:

She blames the reporting of the story for "90 percent" of the timing of Vanderbilt's suicide - but not for the suicide itself. Vanderbilt had attempted to take her own life in 2007 and in 2008, Jordan said, and she lived believing that her friend might try again.

"I don't hold any grudge, really, since she's tried it before," Jordan said as her eyes filled with tears that did not spill over. "So how can I say it's all his fault, when it's not really all his fault?"

She paused for a long breath, "I mean, eventually she would have anyway. ... It just so happened to be the timing with the article."

The article also glosses over Dr. V's multiple fabrications calling them simply 'unverified claims'.
And has this tidbit:

- 41 percent of trans-identifying respondents to a 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey reported attempting suicide. That compares to 1.6 percent of the general population.

The 25 Most Dangerous Street Corners in the US

Are mostly in the mid-west - and contra Chris Rock not named Martin Luther King Blvd.

Detroit appears three times which isn't all that unexpected (maybe just list it as any street corner) but Chicago appears four times while NYC doesn't even make the list.

You have been warned. [Normally I wouldn't indulge in such pandering but that was before a certain ewok mentioned the phrase 'contractual monthly traffic quota'.]

90 An interesting story: http://tinyurl.com/mgx7xwv In few ways: 1) I find it hilarious that, in the story, they told the guy who complained about the policy that since it did not change the terms and conditions of his bank account, it did not matter. Excuse me, but placing limits on how much money one can withdraw is a pretty big change to the terms of the agreement, no? 2) This does not bode well. If they are doing this as a hedge against a run, how does not telling anyone they are doing it help? They have to know it would become a matter of public knowledge at some point, and by hiding it, it makes their customers less confident in them than if they had told them in the first place. People are strange. 3) anyone know how things are in general in Europe financially? I have heard things about the poor economy in France and the thing in the Ukraine looks like it could get more out of hand, but I have not seen many stories overall on Europe financially lately.

98 Royal Rumble, for those unfamiliar with the dumb, is a giant 30 man match. New guy every 90 seconds or so. The hard-core wrestling fans - the type that buy tickets to pay per view shows - are in love with Daniel Bryan and kinda hate everyone who isn't Daniel Bryan right now. Daniel Bryan had a match earlier in the show. And lost. The crowd wanted him to be a secret, surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble. Once they realized he wasn't they just booed the rest of the show. Kinda weird. Kinda felt bad for the other guys. They were just trying to do their job and got booed just for not being the guy the crowd wanted to see.

184 131 Well, both the Reichstag and Kristallnacht were political theatre. We see political theatre all the time. Just a difference of degree. It was the same with the Soviets. Their version of Jews was Kulaks and "Wreckers". The names and groups change, but the theme remains the same. The stoking of an US vs THEM mentality (with the THEM being a small, but nebulous and not well understood minority.) People don't change. Sure the names and places do, but what drives and motivates people does not- fear, envy, ignorance. Socialism depends on those things. Without them, they gain no traction. Which is why up until now it has never gotten a lot of widespread traction in the US. Scary stuff.

185 More than a few Republicans admired him for his courage and perseverance as a cripple, and it would have been incredibly bad taste for anyone to talk about it openly.

That's why it was so hard for any Republican to actually, you know, run against him. Wendell Willkie barely even tried. Alf Landon - who dat?

The one politician who might have put him down was Huey Long.

188 WWE has a slight problem in that the hard-core fans love Daniel Bryan. But he's a small, unassuming bearded dude (real small, like 5'9) so he doesn't necessarily attract much attention from the casual fans and mainstream media. WWE usually likes big, tall, muscular dudes to be their champion. Type of guy who is just physically big and impressive to the average person, and especially average kid. But the hard-core fans that buy tickets hate the big, muscled guys and argue, with good reason, that since it's all fake, why can't a small guy beat up all the big strong dudes? It's an interesting problem for WWE. Their TV audience, which is casual fans (like me), and their hard-core audience now prefer opposite things. TV casual fans like the stereotypical big strong dude. The hard-core obsessive fans hate the stereotypical big strong dude and are demanding that smaller, weaker dudes be the champs, specifically they are demanding that 5'9 180 Daniel Bryan beat up all the 6'5 260 guys. So, it's an interesting problem. WWE wants guys like Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin. Big, jacked, impressive looking dudes that are physically impressive if you saw them on the street. That seems to draw more casual fans and mainstream fans. The hard-core fans say that's stupid, it's all fake anyway, let's have a more normal looking dude like us who's the champ. The hard-core fans don't care about TV ratings and what casual mainstream fans care about. It's a tough problem for WWE. It's bad for their TV product if the fans at the shows keep booing their big, strong guys. But they also don't want to have their champ be a man who is smaller than the average American male. Really hard to please both audiences.

233 203 The funny thing about the "Zionists" label is that it seems to mean in context whatever the speaker wants it to mean. It can mean "Pro Israel." I can mean "Wanting to set up a Jewish hegemon within the mentioned state (outside of Israel.) It can just mean "Pro-Jewish." It is such a great phrase for demagogues because they can say it and the listener can fill in the blanks for them. It sounds ominous and the speaker does not even have to get into specifics. In other words, the listener does the work of the demagogue for them.

241 A lot of sports and entertainment forms have that problem of the disconnect between hard-core and casual fans. Many hardcore Nascar fans would be fine if Nascar went back to racing tiny tracks in small-town North Carolina and not on national TV. Broadway is a good example of a genre that listened mainly to it's hard-core fans and retreated into a cultural ghetto. Broadway used to be a huge part of American pop culture. It tried to appeal to mainstream American tastes. At some point Broadway said, fuck that, let's appeal to our hard-core fanbase -- gay dudes and melodramatic drama chicks. Broadway became super gay and super chickified and the rest of America just .... stopped paying attention. Jazz was once huge. But the hard-core Jazz fans thought predictable, danceable, tappable rhythms were lame and stupid. And Jazz retreated into an isolated cultural ghetto.

251 "Media Covered Up Bill Clinton's 2008 Affair During Hillary's Presidential Run"

Uh, that's not all they have been covering up.

The media have been at pains to stay VERY far away from the longstanding rumors that while Bill is off gallivanting at night, his side of the bed in the Clinton residence has often been being warmed by the woman who is currently Mrs. Anthony Weiner, to wit, Huma Abedin.

If the Clintons were not top shelf liberal Democrats, the auxiliary wing of the Democratic Party known as the media would be all over that particular piece of salaciousness, you can be sure.

But it gets even more creepy and incriminating when one considers Huma Abedin's familial ties to radical foreign elements.

I keep thinking more and more that it must have felt something like this to be living in Rome as the Empire began to fall apart from corruption and ineptitude and inflation. Hearing incredibly weird rumors and realizing that they're more than likely true. Hearing the straight-faced official denials and realizing that they're almost certainly false.

253 The Munich massacre was an attack during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany on 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team, who were taken hostage and eventually killed, along with a German police officer, by the Palestinian group Black September.[3][4][5][6] Shortly after the crisis began, they demanded the release of 234 prisoners held in Israeli jails,[7] and the release of the founders (Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof) of the German Red Army Faction, who were held in German prisons.[8] Black September called the operation "Iqrit and Biram",[9] after two Palestinian Christian villages whose inhabitants were expelled by the Haganah in 1948. The attackers were apparently given logistical assistance by German neo-Nazis.[10] Five of the eight members of Black September were killed by police officers during a failed rescue attempt. The three surviving attackers were captured, but later released by West Germany following the hijacking of a Lufthansa airliner. Israel responded to the killers' release with Operation "Spring of Youth" and Operation "Wrath of God", during which Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and special forces systematically tracked down and killed Palestinians suspected of involvement in the massacre happy happy joy joy

291 Answer: Kinky Boots Based on the 2005 film Kinky Boots, which was inspired by a true story, the musical tells of a struggling British shoe factory's young, straitlaced owner, Charlie, who forms an unlikely partnership with Lola, a drag queen, to save the business. Charlie develops a plan to produce custom transvestite footwear for drag artists, rather than the men's dress shoes that his firm is known for, and in the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

358 241 A lot of sports and entertainment forms have that problem of the disconnect between hard-core and casual fans. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at January 26, 2014 11:41 PM (ZPrif) In 2002 when Britney Cecil was killed by a puck at a hockey game, the NHL (and all other hockey leagues) mandated safety nets behind the goals for the safety of fans. You would have thought they made hockey into pairs figure skating from the reaction of fans. A 12 year old girl dying was "unfortunate" but she should have been paying attention is what these idiots argued. As for NASCAR fans, they bitch about the tracks that NASCAR goes to and lament that they don't go to the old tracks, but they forget that fans stopped going to N. Wilkesboro, Rockingham, Darlington and now Martinsville. Tracks that held/hold under 50K fans not selling out, but when they go to a track that holds 100K fans and doesn't sell out they point to that as why NASCAR should be at the smaller tracks. Let's see, 70% of 50K or 60% of 100K, that is an easy question to answer.

The initial post is accurate enough....and that's what the FDIC is supposed to handle -- the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation....which, like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Sallie Mae, is a supposedly independent deal sponsored but not backstopped by the Feds, but in the case of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac they were.....and Sallie Mae got sockpuppeted by the Feds under a law commonly known as.....wait for it.....Obamacare! Yes, in the 2700 pages of medical gibberish, they found time to corrupt Sallie Mae, as well.

In actual practice, all of these -- and Ginnie Mae, the FSLIC, and all the others -- have been thoroughly looted. Whenever the crisis hits that they were formed to insure against, their insurance will have whatever value the Federal Reserve desires on that day.

369 wait, what's going on with the banks?

Forbes had an article that said the PBOC had ordered a three day freeze of transfers between China's commercial banks, and a nine day freeze of currency conversion for a period overlapping the Chinese new year. When coincidentally the BOC is defaulting some investment instrument coming due (the 31st).

Zerohedge says it's nothing, some commenters there and at market-ticker think this is old news announced three weeks ago, so not a surprise.

The forbes article, which was up when I put the link in my comment above, has now disappeared.

Other commenters are also claiming chinese markets are going all to hell on heavy volume.

373 @282 Thanks. He made it up (W-P to Lake Erie) just fine in snow. There's a boo-coo toolbox in the trunk, because he just got done "de-powering" the steering rack, and felt that the improved road feel kept him out of a couple of "polar-moment" situations. We've got a hell of a clipper coming; it's my job to worry.

My own experience is that a light RWD car with close to 50/50 weight balance will do as well powering up and steering in blowing snow as a heavier car with 60/40 (or worse -- I had a Ranchero!).  Once slicked snow comes into play, or what we call "glare ice" here, nobody really has an advantage. I do pretty well with a one-ton, duallies, and reduced speed. Jeep wrote the book, but 4WD won't stop you. In a true "Time of The Great Freeze" scenario there's always the 6 X 6.

I'm not reassured by the knowledge this was announced three weeks ago, if that's true. The BOC default (which is again, one particular device, not the whole bank) was announced last week, but surely they knew longer ago than that. Even the it's-no-biggie version indicates that China's banking system will be closed for the period under discussion because no one will be working to process transfer requests. If had funds at risk in a deposit there I'd be getting out just to be on the safe side.

Tempted to say Wham!.

But neither of them really pushed the musical frontiers. Duran Duran did use that "gated drum" sound, which I thought was cool at the time - until I found out that Peter Gabriel had done all that shit on his "Melt" album many years before.

So we're left with songs. "Careless Whispers"? or "Save a Prayer"? Both are fine songs for their day.

Better off with Tears for Fears, you are. "Start of the Breakdown", "Shout", "Brian Wilson Said" . . .

Protocol round here is that sick spouse gets the comfy big bed, but sick spouse always actively prompts well spouse to sleep elsewhere for their own health. This works gracefully and avoids awkward silences.

Protip: get one of those inter-room baby monitors. That way, sick spouse can easily awaken and summon well spouse to come help if needed.

If they made a baby monitor that filtered snoring, that would be icing on the cake.

434 Dude. Wham. No question. I loathed Duran Duran when they arrived in their new romantic makeup. But their music had held up pretty well. Not as well as Big Country, but better than many. Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy see, my instinctive response was wham, however, some of the kids were playing hits from the dark ages and I could hear some of them. I think it might be the case the duran duran had more songs but wham had a lower percentage of bad songs. also, I should clarify, before I offered my question to the horde I was thinking of wham and george michael as one. his I want your sex song is not as bad as I had remembered.

So he is going to buy the boy a round trip and throw out the ticket back. I suspect I will be in for a very thorough screening on our trip back to the states. Posted by: bestie21 at January 26, 2014 08:46 PM (AzO5R)

447 420 "so, which is worse, duran duran or wham?" Tempted to say Wham!. "Start of the Breakdown", "Shout", "Brian Wilson Said" . . . Posted by: boulder toilet hobo at January 27, 2014 12:32 AM (30eLQ) If you are talking that era, Big Country is the way to go. Unique sound, and first rate musicians. Tony Banks (bass) and Mark Brzezicki (drums) both worked with Pete Townshend and The Pretenders on some of their best known songs and albums. "In A Big Country" , "Fields of Fire" and "Wonderland" are all top notch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeX5cRjvFR0

527 I think that really screwed them since they were pretty much "out of sight, out of mind". They dropped out of sight in the US after Look Away, but they stayed pretty big in Europe. They put out new music up until the early 00s. Check out the US version of their last album. It's called John Wayne's Dream. Lotta great tracks in that album. For a long time in the 90s, there was a story on the local news pretty much every night about someone in Anderson being stabbed outside a bar. --- ITA. I mean, I live here. Like any cities big or small, there are bad places. I grew up in Cincinnati. Lived for many years in Orlando. Spartanburg, by comparison, is like Mayberry. It always mystified me that we wind up on those crime lists with Chicago, Detroit, Oakland, etc. Posted by: Lady in Black - Come, oh, sleep! All you have is the

Also, the mafia doesn't have the Federal government backing them up. Fun fact: If you have a business and play a radio station over the PA system, you have to pay license fees to SESAC, ASCAP and BMI, and that fee is a percentage of your gross sales. If you are playing MUZAK, you don't have to pay those fees, thus that is the reason why department stores play MUZAK instead. A couple hundred a month to MUZAK is a hell of a lot cheaper than 10K a month to the licensing companies.

Mellancamp is supposed to be a poor man's Springsteen.    I've always found Springsteen to be a condescending asshole with only an outside view of the  fly over working class.  On the other hand Mellancamp (at least pre-90s JCM) celebrated the world I grew up in.

Nite nite Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy at January 27, 2014 01:37 AM (V6y6o) Saw many a manager act like dicks to people in radio thinking that his/her charges were too talented to actually be doing an interview with this podunk radio station. What the managers didn't realize is that everyone in the radio business is interconnected. That DJ at the podunk radio station worked with the guy who does mornings at New York City's number one station and tells him about the manager, or that program director at the small station becomes program director at the station in DC and remembers the asshat. The flip side was the bands that were easy to work with. Aerosmith and Hootie & the Blowfish in the 90's were real easy to work with. They would actually come to the station and just hang out when they would have a concert in town. Cripes, Harry Connick, Jr's sister lived here, and when he would come visit her, he would stop by for no reason whatsoever. Guess who had the easier time getting airplay?

Even the tongue in cheek reference to the bible belt fits right in with the cynical/hopeful world I remember growing up in the 80s in the midwest.

Wouldn't it be better to actually recruit in California, being that people are desperate for jobs that don't involve graft (Solyndra), collusion in government spying (Cisco, Apple, Google), fraud, cost-shifting (Netflix), or working directly for the Nanny-state?

604 Each minion will receive a luxurious 3x3 sleeping quarters and free mandatory access to the training facilities that include the flaming pit of death and the spikey ball death trap.

I have a large stockpile of minionchow which I supplement with vitamins for closers.  In addition it's Washington state so each minion receives an ounce of hash upon entry to the state as all visitors.

655 Break an egg into a mixing bowl. Bash it around a little with a whisk. There will be no power tools on this job.

Add about a cup and a half of baking mix. Bisquick is a very fine product. I prefer Jiffy, of Chelsea Michigan, because the owner drove the Indy 500, then came home to run grandma's flour mill. Beat the egg into the mix, then splash in "some" milk. Little bit at a time. Don't overdo it. You want a mix that's just a little too thick to pour. If you put in too much milk, you'll have to add more baking mix, and then...

See? Told you.

657 The batter (frequentative verb form) does not need to be perfectly smooth. Just mix that shit up. I add a dash of baking powder to make sure they will fluff the hell up a little. This is a cheap, show-off trick, and it's really beneath you.

Use Clabber Girl, because, Indy 500. The Hulman family saved the track.
Also, Mary had a cigar named after her. When she was young, and winsome.

A dash of salt and a pat of butter in the mix is all right too, if you can spare it.

Push mixture into sheet-metal form. Rubber scraper (not a "spatula"), spoon, or you did wash that finger didn't you. Any of it you get on the top of the metal, you'll have to scrub off later.

Make the portions equal. One little gob in each, then another little gob in each, and so on.Use whatever tool to tamp them down flat.

660 After ten minutes, look in. I don't have a glass door in my over. Nobody loves me.

This calls for some subtlety. I realize I'm on the wrong blog. You're looking for just the least little tinge of color on the tops of those biscuits. Not deep brown, just a hint. Afte ra couple of batches, you'll recognize what's best in your oven.

Got a round toothpick? Those are baking tools. Shove in the middle, and if it comes out clean, they're done.

661 There are many fine oven mitts on the market, they tell me. Whole websites are devoted to their appreciation and use. You ain't tough enough to pull those biscuits out barehanded, and I know that because I have seen strong men try.

It's kind of important to let the whole pan set a little, even if only a minute, before "disgorging." They shrink up, you see, and free themselves up. If you don't wait you'll end up going around the edge of each biscuit with a little knife blade.

That's OK with my oven gear, but it's hell on the Teflon.

662 A founder of IranÂ’s Revolutionary Guards now admits that the Islamic Republic was seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. This is the first time any regime official has made such an admission, even as another report claims that one of IranÂ’s most radical clerics was the spiritual overseer of the nuclear weapons program.

“We pursued ways in order to gain nuclear arms,” Gen. Mohsen Rafiqdoost told the regime’s Mehr News on Saturday. “I asked Imam [Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini] what his opinion was. He said do not pursue atoms, and we stopped.”

But that claim falls short of the truth. In the late 1980s, a letter by Mohsen Rezaei, then the chief commander of the Guards, asking Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution, for approval of the nuclear bomb program was revealed. It showed the leader had approved of seeking nuclear weapons.

Rafiqdoost became the first minister of the Guards and was in charge of purchasing arms on the black market.

In a book I mentioned on the Sunday book thread, The Dead Hand, there is discussion of how much effort Iran made to acquire nuclear expertise from Russians during the year after the Soviet collapse. A lot of Iranian agents were running around trying to buy stuff and a lot of scientists survived by going to Tehran to teach classes. These were supposed to be limited to non-classified info and not be specifically nuke-building seminars but there was always probing questions.

There is absolutely no question that Iran was in pursuit of nuclear weapons capability from 1989 and onward.

As tens of thousands of people watched in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, a seagull and a large black crow swept down on the doves right after they were set free from an open window of the Apostolic Palace.

One dove lost some feathers as it broke free from the gull. But the crow pecked repeatedly at the other dove.
