Chuck Schumer Wants Tracking Devices on Autistic Children

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has proposed a far-reaching new law that would force taxpayers to cover the costs of placing tracking devices on autistic children after 14-year-old autistic child Avonte Oquendo was found dead last week. The tracking devices would not be implanted, but would instead be attached to watches, ankle bracelets, belts, or shoelaces. "The program would be completely voluntary for parents and run by local law enforcement," Schumer's office announced.

...Studies show that approximately half of autistic children wander away from supervised areas. The legislation would grant $10 million for the program.

Well I know some families with autistic children who have to be constantly vigilant or else their kid will take advantage of an unlocked front door and wander far off into the neighborhood. And it's my understanding that the Secret Service uses a similar tracker to find VP Joe Biden whenever he wanders off.

But even if it's a good idea at the family level for autistic children to wear these trackers Schumer completely fails to explain:

  1. Why is this the business of the federal government?
  2. Why do we need a law covering this?
  3. Why should the taxpayers cover the costs of these devices?

Somewhere along the line a lot of the American people have bought into the assumption that just because something is good in a nice-to-have way, it must automatically involve the federal government paying for it. Now Schumers are always going to be Schumering because it's their nature but sadly this bill is likely to pass with bipartisan support. Because the children.

NYT: Fear the Power of the Koch War-Zeppelin

Only a few weeks into this midterm election year, the right-wing political zeppelin is fully inflated with secret cash and is firing malicious falsehoods at supporters of health care reform.

A right-wing war zeppelin? That's a good idea. I like that. We'll start the ball rolling and get funding approved at the next VRWC meeting Koch-willing.

Why Wendy Davis' Lies Matter According to the Washington Post

Well they might harm her future state and national political prospects and we can't have that.

What Davis then needs most of all is not to win - although that would be nice for her and her supporters - but rather to be seen as having run a creditable campaign that continues to elevate her star status. Allegations like these about her résumé, if they persist and/or lead to other problems with the campaign, are perilous to that perception.

Truthfulness is simply not a value of the left. So telling lies or 'incorrect promises' or 'loose speech' or whatever the euphemism du jour is is only wrong if you do it badly. Or aren't a member of the left.

Meanwhile the rest of the media is coming to Davis' defense but the main problem is that her campaign is built around her identity as a single mother who succeeded except it turns out she wasn't single nor much of a mother.

Well of course. It's not like attorneys are officers of the court or expected to follow the law or anything. Silly rabbit.

John J. McGinty, RIP

Mr. McGinty, who joined the service in 1958 directly after high school, was a drill instructor at the Marine boot camp in Parris Island, S.C., and a brig officer at the Norfolk, Va., naval base before volunteering for duty in Vietnam in 1966.

"I didn't want to be earning my pay guarding a bunch of AWOL sailors," he told Edwin F. Murphy, author of the 1987 book "Vietnam Medal of Honor Heroes."

For his actions during a battle in 1966 he was awarded the Medal of Honor. His citation may well be the only one with the phrase 'attacking hordes'. He died last week at age 73.

ScarJo Stands Up For SodaStream, Israel

You see SodaStream is an Israeli company which makes them bad, bad, bad so anyone who works for or supports them is bad as well. Sadly this may hurt her career in Europe and dark blue areas of the US.

In the meantime, Johansson deserves applause for being willing to take the heat for standing up for SodaStream. The attack on SodaStream shows the true face of the BDS movement. They don't care how good the company is for the regional economy or even the Palestinians who work there. They don't care that the "settlement" in which it exists would almost certainly remain within Israel if a peace treaty with the Palestinians were to be signed. All they care about is demonizing the very existence of the Jews who live there. As the abuse from Aslan and the rest of the BDS movement shows, that same demonization will apply to anyone, even an Obama-supporting politically correct liberal Democrat like Johansson. Though this may not have been a fight that she would have chosen to engage in, Johansson must now show that she and others prepared to stand with Israel won't be intimidated.

Well I just like their products - the fact that it outrages all the right people is a pleasant bonus.

So Gear Whores Anonymous pointed out this picture of two MD state troopers guarding Starbucks after the mall shooting this weekend who seem to have every possible piece of gear and accessories attached to themselves as well as a rifle, shotgun, and pistol and of course tactical duct tape and (I assume) tactical athletic cups.

8 Surprise! The Media Lies About a War On Women The media is obsessed with declaring that Republicans are waging a war on women, while ignoring the many, many, many very real actions of Democrats. This is not to say that all Republicans are angels, but that by and large the stereotype of Republicans wanting to keep women barefoot and pregnant is hogwash. When the media canÂ’t find a real example of a Republican being truly anti-woman (i.e. the vast majority of the time), they simply distort the truth or just out right lie and invent their own false narrative. 46 I have a slightly funny story I was waiting for the ONT to tell. I was trying to make reservations on Icelandic Air this afternoon. After waiting on hold for 10 minutes listening to Icelandic music (which frankly should be a human rights violation) I spoke with a nice customer service rep. He had what I consider a typical Icelandic accent based on my encounters with other people from Iceland. He can't resolve my issue and says he will find an answer and call me back. He tells me his name and I am like "what?" he repeats "My name is Pedro" Ok maybe it isn't that funny but it gave me a chuckle.

107 Well, my let it burn moment came early this week. Right now, the state gay marriage ban in Indiana is being deliberated. There was already one in place, but the language was considered "too strong" so it was removed, and condensed to a basic "Marriage is between one man and one woman" Period. Okay great. Now, I live in one of the, if not THE reddest county in the state. The City Council is 5-2 in favor of GOP members, with the 2 non GOP being "blue bloods." Tonight, the council passed a resolution AGAINST the state's gay marriage ban. Now, I am not sure why the city council is even addressing it, as it is a STATE issue. But, I am just blown away that in a conservative county like mine (There are Amish here, for Pete's sake), the council is going against a gay marriage ban. The vote was 4-2. For one thing, they are going expressly against what their constituents would choose. For two, I feel like the fight is lost at this point. If the people who should be holding down the fort are throwing in the towel...what can we do?

If Chuck Schumer is a Democrat, and Democrats are tolerant of those that are different, why does he want to single out autistic kids?

If Chuck Schumer is a Democrat, and Democrats are smart, why does he have such dumb ideas?

If Hillary Clinton is a Democrat, and Democrats are the party of the people, how come she hasn't driven a car since 1996?

This is stuff we need to say repeatedly to the left and the LIVs.

They immediately took it out and ground down the area around where my crown is located and improved it considerably. As for the odds of it working, apparently they are really great devices for those with no more than moderate apnea but, in my case, my jaw is not very mobile so there is less of a chance of success. Still, it was $2400 and the insurance company paid for it so I'm willing to give it a try. They said that after a few days I'll break in the device and it won't be as uncomfortable.

So I often wake at 3  realize I'm not wearing it and only get 3 hours of good sleep. If the dental things work that would be better for me since the mask gets in the way of watching TV or reading the computer. So I might actually put it in place before I fall asleep.

It varies depending on what type of unit, but...

Rgt = 275 to 300 approx

Squad = 10 to 12 sometimes less.

I was looking at the MOH citation at CDR Salamander, and I hit: "estimated enemy regiment. With each successive human wave which assaulted his 32-man platoon during the 4-hour battle, 2d Lt. McGinty rallied his men to beat off the enemy. In 1 bitter assault, 2 of the squads became separated from the remainder of the platoon. With complete disregard for his safety, 2d Lt. McGinty charged through intense automatic weapons and mortar fire to their position. Finding 20 men wounded and the medical corpsman killed...."

Being compelled to do so (accountant), I'm trying to figure out how the numbers work. If two squads got separated, and he found 20 men wounded and one medic killed, then the remainder of the 32-man platoon would have been no more than 11 people. And, since there were 500 enemy killed, a regiment must be bigger than that....but how much bigger?

296 The only good thing about Barbara Walters is that she provided another punchline for the Police Squad series.  Forensic scientist Ted Olson does so at her expense as follows in the first episode:

Ted Olson: These guns are identical to the one that killed Jim Johnson. Watch carefully as I test fire this gun into these video tapes of Barbara Walters interviews.

[fires gun]

Ted Olson: As you can see, it completely destroys the Burt Reynolds interview, and everything from Bo Derek to Paul Newman - but only up to the point where Barbara asks him "is it difficult to love?" Now let me show you what happens when the gun is fired from three feet, which is the distance Sally claimed the shots were fired from.

[fires second gun]

Ted Olson: Notice, complete destruction, right up to the point where she asks Katharine Hepburn what kind of tree she'd like to be.

Or is Hilary going to make a state senator from Fort Worth who lost her only statewide election as her VP? Are they going to make her a cabinet secretary, I am having a hard time seeing this either Also how much Wendy Davis implosion do we need to destroy her prospects. A ten point defeat, a twenty point defeat? Having her senate district in Fort Worth reject her? I am just not following this logic. I suspect that this is just ass covering and it means national Dems are ready to abandon her, they just don't want to be anti woman.

314 "Can anyone put me some knowledge about how many people are in a regiment or squad, and whether having 32 men in a platoon includes the 2nd LT in charge of it?"

Don't forget NCOs.

Also, the size differential from squad to regiment is considerable.

At the moment, the U.S. Army is standardized on a nine-soldier squad, including NCO. There are vigorous debates about this.

Not least that for mechanized infantry riding into battle under armor, fitting an entire 9-soldier squad into an adequately protected vehicle along with the vehicle crew, and then having that vehicle be air transportable, is difficult.

Engineering opinion is simply to have smaller squads, or to split existing squad headcount across two vehicles. This is strongly resisted by actual squad leaders, who point out that it's hard enough to keep unitary squads moving and fighting in unison as it is, without the complexities of keeping them synchronized while fragmented.

Goodish news... I did get hired part-time at min. wage for Sears starting tomorrow and just got an an offer today for a full-time gig at a call center (which will be torture for me but...$$$ :roll starting Friday. I hope I can do both but if it's a choice between min. wage part-time and $9.50 full-time, I guess I'll just have to inconvenience Sears then, won't I? I infinitely prefer the type and scope of work that Sears offers to a call center environment and the ability to parlay it into a better position but needs must and I HAVE TO think about my short-term, emergent, family needs at this moment. No, the deal with OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) is that there are muscles that keep your airpipe round. When you're awake, all your muscles are going, but when you fall asleep, many of the voluntary ones go dormant. You get OSA either when your airpipe muscles are incorrectly regarded as "voluntary", or if they relax enough for the structure of your neck to overwhelm them (OSA is highly correlated with a dress-shirt neck size of >16, including both Pillsbury doughboys such as myself or NFL linebackers). So the pipe actually sags closed, until your blood oxygen level gets low enough that your brain goes into existential panic and wakes you up enough that the airpipe muscles open things up again. Being in an oxygen tent wouldn't help -- you'd hit the same lows, bounce out of it, and hit 'em again.

327 24 lb. windfall apples, mixed varieties* 3-6 lb. granulated sugar 1 gallon water 1 tsp. pectic enzyme Champaigne wine yeast and nutrient Chop the apples into small pieces, put into primary fermentation vessel, add the pectic enzyme and water and cover the mixture. The water will not cover the apples, so stir several times a day to bring bottom apples to the top. After 24 hours, add the yeast and nutrient. Keep covered (a bath towel held fast with a large rubber band works well if the primary fermentation vessel doesn't have a lid) and in a warm place for 7-10 days. When the vigorous fermentation of the pulp subsides, strain the juice from the pulp and set aside, then press the juice from the pulp and add to the set-aside liquor. Measure and add 3 lb. sugar per gallon of liquor. Put into carboy or gallon secondary fermentation vessel and fit with airlock. Rack when clear, allow another 60 days, then rack again and bottle. Allow six months before tasting, one year for best results. [Adapted from C.J.J. 330 Wrong recipe. This is the one I use APPLE WINE (2) [Medium bodied] 12 lb. windfall apples, mixed varieties 3 lb granulated sugar 1 gallon water 1 tsp. pectic enzyme Champaigne wine yeast and nutrient Quarter the apples and run them through a mincer or mash with a 2 x 6 in a bucket. No seeds! Bring pulp to simmer in 1 gallon water, holding simmer for 15 minutes. Strain juice onto the sugar in primary fermentation vessel, stirring well to dissolve, then reintroduce the strained pulp and, when cool, the pectic enzyme, stirring well. Cover, set in a warm place for 24 hours, then add yeast and nutrient, cover, and set in a warm place for four days, stirring twice daily. Strain pulp and pour liquor into secondary fermentation vessel and fit with airlock. Rack when clear and fermentation has ceased. Rack again in 30 days and again in another 30 days, then bottle. Allow one year to age.

335 Read the logic on Wendy Davis here. And Cilliza is one of the better political reporters the MSM has. If Texas is going Democrat because of Hispanics, where is the Hispanic candidate for governor? I mean the one who is NOT a Republican? I mean if a dem can win in 2018 because of hispanic votes, wouldn't it be Julian Castro from San Antonio? Of course he has an anti Texas pinko mom and even a lefty by San Antonio standards. But he'd get a lot more votes than Ms Davis. Someday there will be a Hispanic mayor of Houston or Austin who is a democrat and they will be a viable Dem candidate. But they probably won't even be the first hispanic governor of Texas. That will probably be a Republican, especially since in Texas Hispanics vote Republican at almost the same rate as anglos if you account for income.

345 Chuck Schumer Wants Tracking Devices on Autistic Children Why can't this be part of a state run Medicaid deal? It's a real thing. Autistic children tend to get out and when they do, it seems like they are drawn to bodies of water too many times. It's just tragic and terrifying thing. Why not let those parents who CAN pay for private tracking devices and services (not going to get into making some kids wear them.) do so and give a voucher to ameliorate the costs to those who CAN'T? Even for the wealthiest of parents, wouldn't your State or County know more about you and your kid's situation than D.C.? They would HAVE to, wouldn't they? Either way, I think (if I HAD to) I would rather deal with a person face-to-face, at the County level at least than get on some 1-800 line to talk to someone in D.C. or Pueblo, CO or, Alberta Canada or wherever the fuck they delivered a no-bid contract to.

The Rifle Squad machine gunners will have M249 Squad Assault Weapons in 5.56, and no one designated as an assistant.  In my time, I had to hump and change out my own SAW barrel, reload, etc.

The Weapons Squad will have M240B 7.62 machine guns, which will have a designated assistant gunner; i.e. the guy that humps a shit ton of ammo and the spare barrel.

They could have, yeah. NVA Rgt's were huge, at full strength and the Btn's were double in size compared to basic standard. Though they often were understrength at about 50%, putting them back in the 300 or so range. So they could have had around the 1000 approx Rgt and got halved by kills.

Is there a thing where the commanding officer never gets lost even if it's just him, or does this subtly imply that the other two squads got separated in different places? And, BTW, outnumbered 30-to-1 by hostiles and all-of-a-sudden realizing that 2/3 of your guys aren't where you thought they were, all the while knowing that you're the thin line protecting the backside of a retreating force -- that goes well beyond "having a bad day at the office."

I would surmise they are going on the logic that, because he was the Platoon Leader, all of the squads in the platoon were "his."

Not having seen any sand tables or graphics, I'm not sure, but it's likely that there was a temporary breach in their line in which the two groups got cut off from each other.

Before the word was used. Diversity was about talents. And that worked, Irishmen were Cops, Italians did tile/cement work. Jews were Lawyers...

Not that those jobs were restricted to those ethnicities they just appeared to dominate them. So when skill sets were the diversity it worked in the melting pot.

When it became color with no skill set it fails.

What we have to debate in this Country, is the very definition of "Needy and Indigent.

Having the "Richest Poverty Class" in all The World, we still define "The Poor" differently here.  Because there is a difference.

The Federal Government should have nothing to do with either.

Should your State government run ads?

-Only if the returns are greater than without.  By a margin of 300%.  Period.  Your Criteria May Vary.

..."State Run Medicaid" is a fallacy.  The Federal Government "bribes" the State with its own money.  It just happened again.  ENORMOUSLY.   With "Obamacare".

When States have the power over "The State", it is a victory.  When States are "bribed" with their own money?

...it is a scam.

I say "NO" to any "Big-'S' State-Run definition of "Special Interest" groups.

Localities, Metropolitan or Parochial?  They've got proximity on their side.

Allow local connections to pervade.  Should they not?  ...get involved.

If not for the children?  ...for the sake of your neighbors.

It sounded vaguely badass, but I can normally grok more of what was going on. 32 guys leaving 500 dead while covering the retreat of a larger group is serious, doing so with an enemy so determined that they'd suffer 50% casualties in their attempt to overrun your position.....whoof.

Since this was probably 5th-6th grade, I wouldn't have had a word of Spanish at the time -- I first took German in 6th grade ("German exposure") in Long Beach, and took it as an actual elective in 7th in Davis. I first started taking Spanish in Newhall in, I think, 8th grade.

414 Chaos may reign at Swanson Primary School with children climbing trees, riding skateboards and playing bullrush during playtime, but surprisingly the students don't cause bedlam, the principal says.

The school is actually seeing a drop in bullying, serious injuries and vandalism, while concentration levels in class are increasing.

Principal Bruce McLachlan rid the school of playtime rules as part of a successful university experiment.

"We want kids to be safe and to look after them, but we end up wrapping them in cotton wool when in fact they should be able to fall over."

Letting children test themselves on a scooter during playtime could make them more aware of the dangers when getting behind the wheel of a car in high school, he said.

"When you look at our playground it looks chaotic. From an adult's perspective, it looks like kids might get hurt, but they don't."

All the stuff about "everyone should go to college" and "nobody should have to work with their hands" is total crap. Where is room for the artisan? Where is there room for those who do things or build things? How can you effectively imagine a task or plan for its successful completion if you have no ideas of the challenges involved, how long it takes, or what its accomplishment takes from you? Everyone should work "menial" positions, because then they'll respect it.....and if they progress to more intellectual pursuits, they won't leave pain points or time wasters in the work plans and designs they will later create.

I am currently having 1/3 of my rent paid (after being evicted)in a complete shit-hole apartment by the county. I decided that I would rather be "needy" for a while, than be indigent at all costs. It was an either/or situation. Pride would have dictated that I neither seek nor accept help for some of my ruinous employment choices. But it's NOT just all about me and my wants and desires. I remember achieving the pinnacle of success in 5th grade (we were so far out, on the playground, the recess monitors couldn't even SEE us, if we all wanted to ditch school and go ice-skating!) Some of us (boys) wished they could ride on the swings without having to be nasty to little kids. Some of us (girls) felt the same way, except the faction that insisted that there would be something terribly wrong if the boys were NOT nasty to little kids before going on the swings. I dunno. I probably should have spoke up more for the littler kids at that point but I wanted to swing, too! Well, fudge! 431 One time, my supervisor happened to be listening in when I took a call from a customer who'd been pushed away by another rep with assurances that her problem would be fixed (it wasn't, of course). She had several phones, all of them programmed with out-of-her area-code numbers. It took me an hour and a half to fix her problem and get her phones working, at a time when I was supposed to be taking 7 calls per hour.

My supervisor made a big show of coming to me after the call, while I was doing all the behind-the scenes work, to ask me who had dealt with that customer previously, so he could see to it that that employee was disciplined for his negligence. When I told him it was the member of our team who'd just been named Employee of the Month because he was taking 13 calls per hour, it was like I'd just informed him that there's no Santa Claus. "You're kidding!", he protested. Nope, there's his user ID, right there. I know that asshole didn't do shit with the information.

Actually, metrics are the frail reed you try to cling to.....'cause the real problem in tech support is that there shouldn't need to be any. If the development team hadn't thrown a pattern of depth-charges into your cruising space, you'd merely be dealing with the technically inept -- and if the tech writers had performed adequately, most of your job would be referring to page numbers. Which would leave you with your occasionally semi-mutinous, effort-shirking staff....some of whom have actual, real problems that you really want to try to get them through.

Between the BH and I, we've had to deal with "our people": downloading porn onto company computers, wearing the same clothes for enough days to have others complain about the smell, be actually homeless and leave two kids in care of a 17-year-old daughter in a car all day, watching a YouTube video "documentary" of the interior of a vagina during working hours, run around hugging random people (who sometimes objected), get mail and process it, while stashing un-opened mail in an overhead until it was full, leave seven-figure checks to the company on a roach-coach counter because FedEx showed up right before lunch.....and it just goes on-and-on.

On the flip side, I've got to talk about one of the things that made me so happy.....we had a woman who could do rework solder -- pull surface mount parts and replace them -- like nobody's business. She could replace microcontrollers with eighteen-gazillion leads and they'd work afterwards. And she went and cashed her paycheck every two weeks because she didn't have a checking account -- with all the hassle and expense that implies. And we kept telling her she should get a regular checking account to simplify things.

So she did.....with Bank of America, the biggest dickwads in banking. And she deposited her first check, and they put a huge hold on it when she needed to pay rent. So she came back and, very upset, explained her problem to me (in Spanish). So I called the branch manager, who gave me a bunch of crap (in English).

So I called our bank.....which resulted in the Chief Compliance Officer of our bank calling the B of A branch manager and laying out, in exquisite detail, why he was an idiot, in violation of numerous rules, and rapidly heading toward "unemployable by any bank."

Amazingly enough, her temporary problem wafted away and she was treated like a queen afterwards......and I'm very proud of that, because being one of "my people" means that I take care of what I can.

451 I wonder if ol' Chucky isn't looking at the big picture.

Get kids signed up and logged into a national registry.

It's always easier to sign up more different categories than to do it all at once.

That's where the Obama puppet masters out thought themselves.

If they'd just started out smaller and only certain classes or types of people were to be signed up for Obamacare they could've got it up and running sooner. Then it's just a matter of expanding the list.

People still think Obamacare will fail but it's still going, still on the books and I don't think any failings will sink it. The government doesn't care if it doesn't work correctly. That just makes more work for government employees to do. And the more work, the more have to be hired.

453 ..'cause the real problem in tech support is that there shouldn't need to be any. Oh, Bullshit! Hee!

454 Deety, the daughter at one time wanted to be an auto mechanic. How to explain to a 90# girl that this wasn't a great idea? With the truth. You need a certain level of strength to do the job competently. Well, I got taught and "learned" from my 6' 7" instructor a lesson one day. We were doing "drowning diver" drills one day. (That's when you heave a bunch of weights and/ or volunteers over the gunwales of a boat and pretend to do tirage and CPR). He was GINORMOUS and I had to tell him that the only way that Icould get him on the boat, by myself, would involve raking his belly over the sharp engine prop. Which I was not willing to do for a drill. "What if I were your Dive Buddy?" "If it were all up to me? Solo? You'd be fucked my man... I'd drag your behemoth ass over the prop just on principal!" No. There are some things that 90# or even 120# girls CAN'T do! If she really understands cars, she won't really need to be that strong to be a Master Mechanic, for too long. But she is at terrible a disadvantage, starting out, to the most ignorant, 18 year old floor sweeper in the shop. Hork!

455 I don't mean to discourage girls from jobs where you have to use your brawn with your brains. Just, know that your brawn probably kinda sucks (relatively, all things considered) compared to an 18-27 yr. old male. I get "invited" to reset Big-Box, Home Repair type stores all the time. I usually refuse because they want me to sign off on the possibility of 50# swinging beams. I can HANDLE 50lbs. I can DEAL w/swinging beams, if I get a chance to duck! I AM TOO SMALL to "catch" 50# swinging beams. That's scary and dangerous as hell!

Pete Seeger.  Marxist bastard who never put his money where his mouth was.  Asshole lefty who "protested" Johnson, Vietnam, Nixon, Bush and Iraq but never had a bad word to say about the Syphilitic Hillbilly, the dog-eating crackhead, Benghazi, Afghanistan or the NSA.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.  Hope they bury him so I can piss on his grave.

459 For some reason, I read the headline as "Small children want tracking device on Harry Reid".

Odd that.

463 Mr McGinty, Sir! Fair Winds And Following Seas! We still have men like you in our military. Not very many, but they are there. The fact we have so few, is due to many factors. 1. Constant brainwashing of our young people in 'school', 2. anti-military stance of our 'culture', 3. hate coming from the political left, 4. Lowering (read diversity quota) of recruiting standards, and 5. We have a percentage of patriots in America is running 1 to 99, With those of us who serve being the 1%.

464 "Truthfulness." How very Huffpo of you. Just say truth. The Left does have a problem with the truth and with the English language. Let's not give into their stupidity.
