Quote of the Day

"When you have an efficient government, you have a dictatorship."

-- Harry S. Truman

The American Dream is Dead in the South?

Well that's what a recent article by Matthew OÂ’Brien in Atlantic Monthly seems to claim.

Included in the article is a chart showing the percentage of people whose parents were the bottom 20% of income who made it into the upper 20%. When you look at the vast sea of red in the lower left it paints a pretty dismal picture of Dixie which appears to have about the same economic mobility as feudal Europe.

Economics_Map

But this map doesn't correspond at all to the places that people are currently moving to to get a better life. And Stacy McCain calls bullshit on it. His primary rebuttal: West Virginia- the glory land of economic advancement?! No fucking way.

Why does rural Arkansas look like a beacon of upward mobility, while the bustling economies of Atlanta and Charlotte produce no such effect?

Most of all, why does the map referenced by O'Brien show that impoverished Appalachia offers more opportunity for advancement than any of the more prosperous surrounding flatlands?

To use a social science term: Your data is obviously fucked up.

And when people looked into the study they found it uses a strange way of determining economic advancement. Basically they looked at the mean family income levels of kids when they were in high school and then later the children's family income when they were 30 years old. Not too many people are in the top 20% of income levels at 30 even if they're doing very well. And I hope they adjusted the income levels for local costs of living but I wouldn't bet on it.

Also Who Gets More Federal 'Welfare'- Red or Blue States?

Short answer: Blue states by far.

New Mexico Triple Enema, Anal Probe, and Involuntary Colonoscopy Guy Gets $1.6 Million Dollars

A city and county in New Mexico have agreed to settle for $1.6 million their portion of litigation brought by an arrestee who said he was subjected to a humiliating hospital anal exam involving three enemas, a colonoscopy and more after a traffic stop last year.

...Despite the exam, no drugs were found on Eckert or in his vehicle.

"It was medically unethical and unconstitutional," his lawyer, Shannon Kennedy, told the Associated Press. "He feels relieved that this part is over and believes this litigation might make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else."

Eckert's suit also named Gila Regional Medical Center and the doctors who performed the exam as defendants, and that portion of the case is ongoing.

I'm guessing the settlement against the doctors and hospital will be even bigger since they essentially ass-raped the guy against his will and without any medical justification.

Keep an Eye on Those Rotarians

They're organized, operate under the radar and have cadres in every major city and county. And I for one welcome our future Rotarian overlords.

Don't take the recommendation of strangers regarding hotels... Don't get too friendly with plausible strangers.

Don't gape at women smoking cigarettes in restaurants. They are harmless and respectable. They are also "smart."

Don't forget to tip. Tip early and tip often.

Well not gaping and being wary of plausible strangers are still good advice.

Victorian Home For Sale - Slightly Haunted

Built in 1901, this Victorian home in the Hollywood section of Dunmore [Pennsylvania] features 1850 sf of living space with an additional 1350 sf of partially finished space. Original hardwood floors throughout entire home. 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms. Off-street parking. Freshly painted. New moulding throughout entire first floor. Slightly haunted. Nothing serious, though. e.g. The sounds of phantom footsteps. A strange knocking sound followed by a very quiet (hardly noticeable, even) scream at 3:13am, maybe once a week. Twice a week, tops. And the occasional ghastly visage lurking behind you in the bathroom mirror. Even still, this occurs very rarely and only in the second floor bathroom.

Note to self - avoid the upstairs bathroom at night, contact local shaman.

Solving the Dying Grandmother Code

Ask MetaFilter member JannaK presented the community with a puzzle that had been troubling her family for nearly 20 years. Her grandmother died in 1996 from cancer and in her last days she scribbled down a seemingly non-sensical string of characters on index cards. Nobody knew what it all meant. Then the Metafilter community solved the puzzle in 14 minutes.

According to the posting, JannaK's grandmother left at least 20 of the cards behind but neither JannaK nor her cousins could solve what they assumed were codes. Her father discovered one of the cards lying around recently, and so JannaK put it to the community.

And the MetaFilter community solved the code. Read the story to find out what the cards said.

29 That blue state/red state welfare comparison was pretty misleading. It looked at raw #s, not per capita. Of course the big states get the most. They have the most people. Florida was #1 cause it's very big and skew old so it gets tons of social security money. A better comparison is per capita.

Leftists generally lump military spending in with federal $$$, which is technically correct I guess, but you know what they say about liars and figures. With military spending added in (including the money paid out per military student to each school district) red states DO get more fed dollars.

Now if you're saying strictly welfare/entitlement payments...not so much.

Do any of the studies take into account Federal owned landed? I mean, many of the large red states have large swaths of land owned by the Feds. That means Fed $ goes for the upkeep of said lands. The lying bastards probably use these numbers to say the backwards Red state voters are the ones receiving the money. Let's look at how much money is spend on Federal land inside Red states and deduct that.

Well counting military spending in red states would be like counting FBI budget or something. That's federal stuff, it shouldn't count. They should only be counting fed money given to state and local gov'ts and individuals. Fed giving money to a fed department located in Iowa and then saying "those backwards Red staters are on the Fed dole!!111" is just disingenuous.

If RFK wasn't assassinated, than Nixon wouldn't have gotten the first ballot, and the nomination probably would have gone to someone else. Imagine it, Reagan b***h-slapping RFK on T.V. and taking the Presidency in '68. Remember, Nixon appointed 5 out of 9 SCOTU justices, IIRC. If those were NIXON appointees in the mould of Scalia, this would have been a much better countryÂ…

122 I know the west is majority owned by the Feds. I just don't know how much the money spent to maintain them is compared to other Fed spending. I'm pretty sure it's not very much. BLM (Bureau of Land Mgmt) and related agencies budgets just aren't that big. The money that presumably counts are the salaries for park rangers and staff that maintain things. Social Security, Medicare, and Defense are 3 huge items in the Fed budget and probably dominate any calculation of where Fed $ goes. And SS and Medicare and basically determined by which states are the oldest. And that's why Florida is the #1 welfare state by the calculation above.

143 Got a relative with cancer who just learned that she doesn't qualify for any clinical trials. Seems so arbitrary. In her case she doesn't qualify cause she's too old. Had another relative who had cancer and didn't qualify for any clinical trials cause it had already metastasized so that would mess up their data. I don't quite know how all this is determined. Are there central databases so you just put in your demographic and medical info and the computer says whether there are active clinical trials you qualify for? Kinda weird how that works. It's this last desperate hope that there's some magic drug in a lab that might save you and ... you are told there might be, but you don't qualify cause you'd mess up the data.

164 No one gets fired from a police brutality lawsuit. If the civilian city leader fire all involved after a claim 10 months after it happened the $1.6 million is just the down payment. The police will be admitting guilty and will have to pay and pay and pay. Even in the most evil violations done by police they still have to fight a lawsuit and protect the evil cops. So they don't have to sell their new MRAP and 3 SWAT vans and 21 police cars they got to pay for of the settlements. There is no butrality insurance like medical malpractice insurance that pays the settlements. It comes right out of the city and police budget and could take 20 years to recover the loss.

168 Yeah, she has had a good life. And she's not that old. Early 70s. Good woman. Gentle southern lady. Unfortunately it is terminal. Downside of brain tumors is it can rob you of your personality before it outright kills you. Bit cruel in that regard. She had a long, good life until a few months ago when she started to behave erratically and out of character. Wasn't till her balance went that they did a brain scan, though.

201 She's a good example of a woman that Obama and the Left want to kill in the name of progress. She's about to start chemo and, I think, radiation. But statistically neither is likely to do much. And I'm sure the care she's about to get in the next few months is gonna be hugely expensive and probably consume more health care resources than she's used in her entire life until this point. She was a healthy lady. She is the perfect candidate for the Death Panels. Or Liverpool Care Pathway or whatever they are calling Death Panels this week. But she doesn't want to die and doesn't want to give up. She doesn't want to be told how grim the odds are (answer: about as grim as they get) so she's gonna undergo the best protocol they know and fight till the end. From the State's perspective she's just a losing bet at this point and every $ they spend is throwing good money after bad. Obama wants to Bend the Curve in healthcare spending. The way you do that is by denying my relative these treatments that seem likely to only extend her life a few weeks. Of course, she might get lucky. The treatments could work. But the odds are, as I understand it, exceedingly low.

207 "...Mama still lives there..." -GGE Uhhhh... little thing like that just slipped her mind, I suppose. Any other dealings with her? The ghost, I mean, not the landlady. BOO! :O Generations of people had stories of being spooked in the old family place where we live. (Alcohol, and later other substances, may have been involved in some of these experiences.) There is an old Cherokee graveyard right here on the ranch. And some of my relatives buried here since the 1960s. But the old house was abandoned for a quarter century. Book value of the house was $0.00 when we moved back, because you can't go lower. You know the line in "It's a Wonderful Life," where George says, "I wouldn't live there as a ghost!"? Yeah, I think our guy left in disgust. At least, we've had no sign of such in the two decades we've been back. Probably because we still haven't brought the place back up to its old shape. siiigh I don't believe in them, so having a ghost around really bothered me. But feeling he's gone, sometimes it's kind of like missing a long-gone pet. :\ My brother had brought a male mannequin to the house, which was named George and was dressed up and stood in a corner. Usually. When you wake up and the mannequin has moved to a different room, that's a little disquieting. Funny. But disquieting. Especially in the dim light at night on your way to the bathroom. "Did you move George?" "No, why?" [hm] or "Did you move George?" ("Oh, right, I'm here by myself. Did I move George?") [hmmmm] (After a few falls, George's face got bashed in, among other damage, and he quit moving.)

231 "Parliament Of Whores" is O'Rourke's best-written book, and the book which turned me off of being a typical Anglo teenage wet liberal into being, at least, pro-early-Reagan.

Reading it again, you just have to bleep out the references to politicians who are fading from memory. We 40-somethings will remember Dodd and Moynihan. 20-somethings? Er... maybe Moynihan, for "Defining Deviancy Down"... which isn't why "Parliament" mentions him.

"Bachelor Home Companion" and "Modern Manners" are timeless. ... for men. They are not written for women (but maybe moronettes will laugh along).

I know she met with her oncologist the other day and was told she didn't qualify for any of the clinical trials that were available for her type of cancer.

I don't know how the oncologist determines that. I'm guessing it's just some database or something.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at January 29, 2014 12:02 AM (ZPrif)

Despite everything the AMA wants to tell you, you alone are in charge of your own destiny. Her oncologist is saying, "you're going to die" based on what he can provide her from the American medical system.....which is pretty damned good, but not exhaustive. Clinical trials are places the American medical system would like to expand. Are these "clinical trials" treatments available in other countries? Are they available for veterinarians? Are there treatments for her condition that do not involve clinical trials?

Unfortunately, when you discover you need to be doing this worldwide research, you're pretty damned sick......so is there someone who can help her with this research?

296 201 She's a good example of a woman that Obama and the Left want to kill in the name of progress. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at January 28, 2014 11:52 PM (ZPrif) ======================= My husband had leukemia. He underwent a bone-marrow transplant, even though his oncologist (privately, thank God) thought he wouldn't make it. He was too old, too fat, too this and that. He turned out one of the best outcomes she ever had. So much for the certainties of medical knowledge! Yet what if in this case the doctor's grimness is warranted? My mother spent two weeks in the ICU at the end, fighting like a tiger. She didn't want to die either. And the Deathpanelists would say she too was consuming expensive resources and at her end, anyway, so why bother? But during that time she was able to go from abject fear of dying to acceptance. The last communication she gave was a slow OK symbol. The beancounters would have said, a death is a death. But it matters very, very much whether your last breath is forcibly snatched away in terror, or given in the peace of knowing you tried your best.

Very bad.

Sometimes it's possible to get at those deep brain tumors with the multiaxial "gamma knife" radiation device. You should ask about it.

With regard to clinical trials, there is a site, clinicaltrials.gov, where you can plug in a disease term and you'll be referred to a list of NIH-sponsored clinical trials. Which may not be an exhaustive list. Not everything goes via NIH.

There are a bunch of things being tried for glioblastoma.

It also indicates where the trials are being run, which matters with an elderly person who may not be able to travel comfortably for long distances.

I don't know how much you're up on the history of science, but folks like Priestley (isolated oxygen gas, invented soda water -- IRL clergyman), Watt (improved steam engines, measured oomph in horsepower -- IRL, machinist), and Hedy Lamarr (spread spectrum frequency-hopping -- IRL, actress) have shown that your paycheck needn't say "scientist" on it to advance science. You don't need to submit to "clinical trials" (which is an FDA term regarding a particular stage in licensing a drug) to experiment with treatments. You merely have to get your hands on the necessary substances and get them administered competently.....which may, for legal reasons, involve leaving the country for a bit. There is no one specific website, however.

Very bad indeed. My cousin only made it about four months from when he was first diagnosed, and was effectively gone much sooner. His ability to form new memories went early on. There was a difficult moment when an oncologist was explaining the options, that could perhaps buy a few months, but had to start over a dozen times because my cousin internal reset button would get pressed and he would be back at the beginning of the conversation.

The oncologist persisted, trying to give a chance at retaining the info long enough to have an opinion but it was futile. The only thing the treatment would buy him was life as a scratched record, skipping back to the same track forever. Not long after that, it got worse to the extent that he no longer had any idea what year it was.

2nd opinion is critical -- but having everything go through insurance (instead of paid doctor visits) is nipping that in the bud. The whole trend about jacking "rack rates" and then accepting insurance discounts is what is screwing up medical care in this country.....not any lack of insurance.

Yes, but getting one's "hands on the necessary substances" can be a cast iron bitch in the American legal and regulatory environment, and sometimes those substances aren't available outside of that environment when they're coming from American pharma firms.

Cap'n Ted Kennedy of the submarine USS Oldsmobile was told in the last months of his life that there was a drug which might prolong his survival. It took every last string which his considerable wealth and political connections could pull in order for him to get access to it. Suffice it to say that any ordinary citizen would have been up shit creek without a paddle.

I consider this one of the central arguments for a pure libertarianism when it comes to medicine, by the way. It's utterly ludicrous that government functionaries can deny dying people access to drugs because the drugs might kill them. Heaven forfend!

Fortunately I used mine to pay off my house and 2 rental houses. Still have money invested, just not in retirement with the exception of a rather large Roth.

398 thx for all the info everyone yeah, I'm being told that there are personality changes that are already starting to occur with her. She was a very calm, gentle, whip smart Southern lady who was very organized and good-mannered. It was her erratic behavior that started a few months ago that was, in retrospect, the first sign. My understanding is the progression of the disease varies a good deal since it depends what part of the brain is being affected.

Last time we had a horrible ice storm in RDU (2005) the schools turned the busses around and brought them back to the school buildings, and then ordered pizzas. Traffic was frozen everywhere but the pizza guys got through. I thought they should have sent the kids home with a pizza and have the pizza guys deliver them.

Posted by: RWC at January 29, 2014 12:08 AM (Q6HBD) I believe the dems have been trying to get their hands on our 401(k) accounts even before SCOAMF was elected. Rush mentioned it in 2008. Once SCOAMF was elected, I stopped putting money in my 401(k). I do not trust any of them, dems the most, of course, but I am wary of the republicans just putting up a fight not worthy of a baby. I might have to take a hardship loan out of mine to get it out of their sights. Stock market is manipulative, I canÂ’t believe it was going up and up despite all the QE printing and/or digitizing money.

413 389 "You don't need to submit to 'clinical trials' (which is an FDA term
regarding a particular stage in licensing a drug) to experiment with
treatments. You merely have to get your hands on the necessary
substances and get them administered competently.....which may, for
legal reasons, involve leaving the country for a bit."

Posted by: torquewrench at January 29, 2014 12:55 AM (gqT4g)

Every word you say is correct.....but my take on it is just a tiny bit different.

If a drug has been developed/synthesized by an American Pharma company, and is only available at 18 kazillion dollars a dose....yes, you are totally fooked. But if the drug is a simple distillation of the bazinga bush in the far-off land of Klooj, it's unlikely that American Pharma would pay the outrageous graft necessary to get it certified as "safe and effective" by the FDA, so it will never be a drug in the US.....until Pharma can synthesize a workalike out of coal tar and rubidium, and get a patent on it.

So if you can duck off to Acapulco or the Bahamas and get a quick dose of bazinga juice from Klooj, it may be worth a try. You won't get "bazingaidium", under development from Pfizer, for less than $100,000 a dose and under some clinical protocol.....but it might just save your life.

You just know that he WANTS to be like Chavez and Maduro in Venezuela, just unilaterally imposing straight-up communism. But he doesn't have the gonads for that. So he settles for the semi-stealth socialism in increments. The problem with Executive Orders, combined with the 22nd Amendment, is that you can't be president forever, and the next guy, if he's from the other party, can just as easily Un-Order everything you ordered. A properly passed law (by Congress) can be Un-Ordered by the next guy, but a lame-ass Executive Order can. So, this is good. Despite his bluster, he's still playing defense. Reduced to Hail-Mary passes. He and his supporters know that time is already running out to implement "The Revolution," and they they for SURE will not get the House back in Socialist hands before 2016, so he will essentially be stymied. So he resorts to (threatened) dictatorial pronouncement about some Small and Medium Things. Mostly as red meat for the base. Yes, even of these constitutional indignities can erode a nation, but at this stage I think he won't be able to do TOO much permanent damage between golf rounds over the next 2.5 years. My older brother took her to her doctor & expressed our worries & he said it was metal stress from the thought of losing me. My older brother is too relaxed. ....and just to be painfully clear. Let's say that Unions received a 4-year waiver for some Obamacare pain unilaterally declared in 2013....then there should be a 4-year waiver of this provision for EVERYONE *not* in a union in 2017 -- with the additional twist that, if overturned, the unions should pay back the benefits of their illegal 2013 waiver plus penalties and interest up to 2017.

461 Narrow one-way streets and lots and lots of people cheek by jowl make me nervous, which is why I avoid cities whenever possible. I live close enough to one that I can get in and get things that I need, but not so close that I can't get away from them. I couldn't live IN a city, it would make me f'n postal.

462 Actually my point is more that we don't have to congregate in the dank deep dingy heart of the city, there are places out there away from the metro area that have the convenience of having your conveyance right there outside the door without having to take public transportation or walk several blocks. Chadwicks down on the water has a pay lot across the street which is essentially its own.

If you want to go rowdy, there is Nicks up at the other end of town, is ha its own parking.

Several places in Arlington have small lots, but you can't guarantee yourself a spot unless you start drinking at 4pm.  Whitlows has an attached paylot which isnt dodgy.

OK, so some close relatives were from Dunmore, PA.  Will have to check where the Hollywood neighborhood is.  Though if there's one thing, or aura, or mystique, that Dunmore sure doesn't conjure up, it would be Hollywood.

Zombie.  And irongrampa, who's of course asleep at this hour but of like mind.

You may be right.  But I think you overlook that Obama is a reflection, a symptom, a result, not a cause.  The guy was a nothing - and not interesting or talented or even articulate, notwithstanding the orwellian nonsense about all that - with no accomplishments and nothing to offer, and was swept easily into office in a country involved in a serious war for the first time in two generations.  His first term was a disaster.  Didn't matter - at all.

No damage in civic affairs is really "permanent".  But again, he's symptom, not a cause.  Zombie you live in the Bay area.  Tell me that the political imbecility of those around you - including, heck even especially - that of many high-functioning successful tech types - is not "permanent".

To be brief, we are screwed not because of idiots like Obaman or vile cretins like Reid or Pelosi or Durbin - but because of our neighbors, acquaintances, and co-workers, who marinate in nonsense 24/7 ("news", NPR, acceptable social patter, popular culture, "education" environments, fucking sports media, hell even restaurant reviews), who lack any framework and mostly any disposition to think critically, and whose mindset is "American" in only vague and limited ways, by historical standards.

To top it off, you have an "opposition" party that, in the midst of grinding economic drudgery, a constitution being shredded almost daily (and flagrantly, with trash talk), serious scandals from A to Z (any one of which would have - rightly - paralyzed or ended any recent previous presidency), and an international situation that is deteriorating dramatically, gathers itself up and ....... wait for it ...... tries to push amnesty (itself a signal embodiment of many of the current pathologies - collapse of the rule of law, racism and race-baiting, vile rent-seeking displacing responsible citizenship).

So - sorry, cannot come close to sharing you optimistic analysis.  Note:  analysis.  Optimism is a separate matter.  Human events are inscrutable and unpredictable.  But an optimistic analysis right now just doesn't follow from a cold look at the facts.

For the NoVA morons talking about meet-up spots, is Whitey's still there?  Always loved that name - and the place was a decent dive bar.

Kind of amazed that Hard Times is still going - not a comment on the place, just on the odds of a restaurant lasting so long.

Parking.  I clearly remember the early 90s, when Arlington was the place to go for dinner from DC, because you could just drive up and park just about anywhere.  Before the insane boom that completely transformed the Roslyn-Ballston corridor.

Haven't been inside the Beltway for 7 years.  Very idea of it gives me the creeps - after living there for more than 25 years.   Haven't exactly told old friends, but I think they're sensing some of the alienation (whose depth and intensity they surely cannot imagine).

That's not good or bad or even saying that I had it better than you or that I'm not a fully functional adult because of it, but there is a certain fundamental strength one gets when all the safety nets are gone that I haven't had to find in myself yet. I suspect that you've tapped into that long since. It's not better or worse but it is something you have that I don't. Lemons and lemonade.

Posted by: Weirddave Yes, that's a good way of looking at it -- "safety nets." Starting at age 7 I had no safety net whatsoever, so I had to learn how to live and stand up for myself and fend for myself from a very young age. By the time I was 9 I was basically like a grownup already, in many ways. (And a total freak in other ways, obviously.) But it gave me such a leg-up in life that in a counter-intuitive way, I feel that my upbringing helped me be a successful person in the long run, because I had such a head start in knowing how to live without any safety nets supplied by others.

Jean and Vendette, thanks.  Was never a regular @ Whitey's, just curious.

Things changed so much, so fast.  I recall having one free evening during a stopover in DC during a home leave from Iraq.  Was at a hotel in Tyson's (to be close to Dulles).  Called a friend, asked if he could come my way from Old Town for dinner.  He sort of guffawed, and pointed out that traffic (it was 5 PM) meant he couldn't really do it before my jet lag put me down hard.  A few years before such a thing was inconceivable.

ManWithNoParty, thanks for your kind words.  But my analysis, while reasonable, is pretty poisonous.  I don't "hate" political figures I've never met (nor even most that I have).  But retaining respect for people I know, when they are part of the problem, is proving impossible, with predictable dire social consequences.

Night all.  Off to give "Savage Continent" one last chance before its NPR-stupid moral imbecility forces me to recycle it and finally finish the tome on Pacific theater naval aviation (The First Team).

At any time you may meet him, he is wearing $1500 to $2000 in clothing. Probably $500 just for the shoes.  His mind is sharp and from all evidence the pencil still has a goodly amount of lead in it. You can sneak out of Old Town - up Seminary, then back streets over to Oak St, then to Gallow - to avoid Bailey Xroads and 7corners and make Tysons in about 45min.  Gotta have old school map skills, your gps will send up on a 90+ min slog.

544 I will not weep for you since you obviously do not need it. But, I will applaud you. Very well done. Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter Here is a very simple example of what I'm talking about: Most little kids, if they somehow get their hands on some money, will spend it all on candy or toys if possible. But I (at least after age 6) very quickly learned that I needed to shop like an adult if I wanted to stay alive. My main source of income was the coin-return slots on newspaper machines in the neighborhood -- it would only take a couple of hours to find a dollar's worth of change. I'd take those coins and, instead of buying candy bars and sodas like every other kid in America, would go to the discount supermarket and spend 33¢ on a 3-for-a-dollar packet of spaghetti; 50¢ on a quarter-pound of ground beef; and 17¢ on a small can of tomato sauce. Take it home and make myself a spaghetti dinner! I thought I was on easy street. When you're hungry for long spans of time you crave protein, not sugar, so I developed the habit of buying real food and not candy, even when I was a very little kid. And if I had a $1.25, I'd save the extra quarter in a secret jar. Became quite frugal with money as a result (unlike modern youngsters).

Is there a web site you can go to and look up how much income the Smith family had in 1968 and the following years, and how do they know 'Ted Smith' got married and had kids? Somebody tracks that data?

I'm not talking about demographics where a million kids were born, and fifty years later 6 or 60 of them are rich and famous. Even then, how do these researchers know that those six made that money? Census data is supposed to be anonymous, right? So in 1978 blah, blah, blah, blah. How do they know where Ted Smith is in that census data for 1978, 1942, 1990, 2014?

Ah hell, how do these researches know that Ted Smith, born in rural Mississippi, moved to Northern California, and lived poor all his life? How do these researchers know that Ted Smith's brother Frank stayed in rural Mississippi?

Dictatorships, LOOK efficient but because of corruption, in fighting amongst the inner circle and ignorance fostered by nepotism and (in our case) affirmative action usually results in a government that reacts slowly, badly and ineffectively.

They can be very destructive to the country. Like a large parasite that doesn't have control of it's impulses.

We've got a prime example developing before our very eyes.

The only real question is who will be the first target of the regime's inclination to kill those who are in the way?

The noveau riche or the elderly and weak.

I'm betting noveau riche first cause like Willy Sutton said once; "That's where the money is".

567 "Why does rural Arkansas look like a beacon of upward mobility" Simple: Wal-Mart NW Arkansas is full of boom towns, surrounding it's hometown of Bentonville. Not only does that company thrive but practically every manufacturer that sells (or hopes to sell) anything through their stores has a full fledged sales staff there just to cater to Wal-Mart.

"Why does rural Arkansas look like a beacon of upward mobility"

Well, if they knew anything about "rural" Arkansas they might know that the NW part, which is the place that shows good mobility, is the home of Walmart, Tyson and several other large companies (and a big school). Rodgers and Fayetteville have good economies and show up on many lists of good places to live. The part that shows bad motility is mostly the much poorer delta. I totally buy the arkansas component of this map.

Sam Walton went to the University of Missouri.  He took a five and dime store and built that into Wal-Mart.  But President Putt, who went to Harvard, says people like Walton didn't build it.  The government built it.

People need to take preconceived notions they have gotten from the news media and plain old propaganda with a grain of salt.  The media and the government lies to us endlessly every day.  Schools teach as much crap as facts.  As adults it's up to us to sift through what is truth and bullsh*t.
