Peter Beinart is a bad, bad father. Because he allowed his son to watch and enjoy a football game. Which apparently is only slightly less shameful than taking his son to a back-alley cockfight and handing him a starter-flask of Thunderbird.

Last Saturday night, he [Beinart's 8-year-old son] proudly dug out a long-unused Patriots jersey and joined me on the couch late into the night as the Patriots dispatched the Indianapolis Colts.
It was wonderful. And it made me a little sick.
It made me sick because I could see the game through his eyes. And it wasn't pretty. My son, unfamiliar with the NFL's pieties, assumed that hurting the other team's players was the goal. To his untutored eye, the violence that guilt-ridden fans like myself decry was a feature, not a bug. He didn't cheer the injuries; he's too sweet for that. But despite my insistence to the contrary, I suspect the message he took from the experience was: The only thing you need to know about the large man writhing in agony on the screen is whether he's on our team.

And expect de Blasio to continue the same nannying policies for the same reason.

The Last Holdout Dies

A former Japanese soldier who hid in the Philippine jungle for nearly 3 decades after World War Two died in Tokyo on Thursday. He was 91 years old.

Hiroo Onoda was sent to Lubang Island as an intelligence officer of the Imperial Japanese Army in 1944. After the end of the war, he remained in the jungle until 1974, when he emerged from his hideout and returned to Japan.

Years ago I read Onoda's book, No Surrender: My 30 Year War, and it was a pretty interesting read. One point he made several times is that he was part of a guerrilla warfare unit who were trained to fight behind enemy lines, ignore enemy propaganda, keep fighting no matter what else happened and specifically ordered not to commit suicide. And he and fellow holdouts essentially brainwashed themselves over the three decades that everything they saw and heard was still part of an enemy ruse. Even his own brother speaking to him across a field in the 1970s wasn't enough to break him out of his constructed belief system.

Bill Maher: 'Thug' is the New 'N Word'

Because there always has to be a new N word - otherwise how are you going to make people race criminals when actual racists are so hard to come by?

On his HBO show Real Time on Friday, Maher said Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman made "a great point ... that thug is now the 'N-word.'"
"I think it's a very creative way to point out that racism has really kind of gone underground in this country," Maher said. The comedian then said he believed that whenever whites "see a black guy they don't like: thug."
"Because it's socially unacceptable now--unlike when it once was--to say the 'N-word,'" he said. "So that's sort of the word that they use instead."

So I guess we're gonna need a new word to describe people who are thuggish.

One of them did, and it cost him a fine of more than $1,000.

City officials have put rickshaw drivers on notice that they can't give unlicensed tours in pursuit of a few extra dollars in their pocket.
As far as police see it, any retelling for hire about the city's past can be delivered only by a city-licensed tour guide, like those generally seen driving horse carriages or leading walking tours.

I take it the Charleston police have already solved all the real crimes.

18 Charleston is really protective of its history to the point that all tour guides are licensed and must retest every two years or so. I get it, but it seems to fall in line with the whole, an established industry protecting itself from upstart competition. I love SC, but that doesn't mean this place is particularly sane.

21 Good evening morons. A few nights of Redbox here in casa hobo.

"Europa Report" was one. It wasn't bad. A team of scientists and astronauts lands on Europa to take readings. Unfortunately they have to land on thin ice in order to get anything useful and, well, watch the movie. The acting was great. And they did a lot with what must have been a budget pickpocketed out of Charlie Sheen's coat. Not entirely sure about the script but meh.

79 The Delta One Launch Facility is just off I-90, east of Rapid City SD, and is open for public tours. Pretty interesting, if you're into Cold War intercontinental armageddon relics. All the Minuteman sites around Elsworth AFB were decommissioned as part of one of the treaties with the evil empire, but that launch facility was preserved as a museum. Worth a stop if you find yourself driving through that part of the world.

I find it hypnotic and very affecting. It's so expertly crafted and so completely about its themes (to the actual detriment of any sense of plot and a large chunk of the original characters) that I just find it infinitely watchable.

Since the writer was Scottish, I imagine that the "ch" is supposed to be pronounced as in "loch." I think that "woach" may be a kind of deep bark from the chest and the "ha" is higher pitched, maybe something closer to a wolf's howl, not sure what "hach" represents though. It is the only actual description of what it sounded like that I have ever run across, so I am pretty pleased - I have been wondering what it actually sounded like for years, and Hollywood's interpretations never sound particularly menacing.

As I recall, Layer Cake is the movie that pretty much got DC the Bond gig. It's also the best British crime film in decades, at least since The Long Good Friday.

In 8th grade we were playing pick up football with the juniors and seniors in high school. At first they ran all over us, after a while, we were able to hold our own. Once we got to high school, we were able to play with the biggest players and not back down. Once we got to be the "big boys", we knew not to take the smaller players lightly.

284 Well batting 0.500 with Amazon orders.

Needed new power adapter for netbook. What got shipped will have to return. The elbow connector that plugs into the netbook actually has a hole in the plastic casing. A hole that is painted silver so it contracts against the black casing. So seems QA saw it but it got shipped. Whoops.

The nine cell battery on the other hand seems to be working. Came at 45% charge. Ran it down to about 32%. And now it is fully charged and indicating 10 hours battery life in High Performance mode.

My Father tried the retirement thing for a little while in his late 60s. Mom sent him back to work since he was driving her nuts at home (and he was going nuts). I don't intend to use kerosene every day -- it's just that SIEG equipment comes encased in goo -- I think they paint it on. I strongly suspect it's because they fill up a shipping container with output and expect it to be at sea for 12 weeks.

My mother's Alzheimer's was escalating & I took day off to take her out. She wanted to come home before they were done. I had to use Goof Off to remove some of glue between tiles. A few ONT's back he said that he lived quite close to the falls. He could he them at times and could definitely hear the fireworks every time they went off. He even said how long it took to drive to falls from his place. It wasn't long. Well under 30 minutes, probably more than 10 minutes. Assuming they've got a few with his name in town, this might help to eliminate those further away from where he might be located. Dunno, maybe narrow it down from say 6, to 2? I know it's a longshot, but ... it's something. He posted it the night he came back after an absence.
