Overnight Open Thread (1-5-2014)
— Maetenloch

Tomorrow is the Most Depressing Day of the Year

Or at least the day of the most depressed whinging on social media.

Tomorrow is set to be the most depressing day of the year, according to a new study.

Extensive analysis of social media reveals that the first Monday back at work in January is the most miserable.

On the other hand if you do get through Monday, you're past the hump.

Melissa Harris-Perry Weeps to Keep Her Job

Over her mocking of Romney and his adopted black grandson. Of course now she claims that any offense was unintentional but Dan Riehl points out that this is a lie and the entire segment was an exercise in snark and there wasn't any other reason to show Romney and his grandson.

And Rick Moran has a theory on why MSNBC hosts seem to have such a problem with behaving decently on the air (Martin Bashir and Alec Baldwin have already lost their jobs after one transgression too many):

Harris-Perry, Baldwin, Bashir, Schultz, and Hayes are not doing anything differently in front of the camera than they do when in casual conversation among themselves and their liberal friends. The wildly exaggerated caricatures of conservatives they routinely use to describe their political opponents - ascribing evil intent to every action, every utterance - is part of liberal culture. It's a laziness of thought and mind that has become second nature to them. And, secure in their arrogant belief of moral superiority, they fail to see their own racism, their own bigotry, their own hateful, hurtful attitudes unless someone steps out and throws it in their face.

It makes you think, what are they apologizing for? They're not sorry. This is how they talk. This is what they think.

To the left conservatives are the evil Other and so the usual bounds of decent behavior simply do not apply to them.

And believe it or not the Romney-grandson mocking is only the 5th dumbest thing Melissa Harris-Perry has said in 2013. And then you have some of her greatest hits from previous years.

Physicists Fail to Find Time Travelers

Surely one of the main ways to vet someone who claims to be a time traveler is their knowledge of something that has not yet occurred. This concept inspired Nemeroff (co-creator and editor of the Astronomy Picture Of the Day website) and Wilson to search the internet for signs of anachronistic factoids. For example, a post from 2006 containing the phrase "President Obama" would hardly be anachronistic, as his potential candidacy was already being discussed.

...Most search engines have a great deal of difficulty searching for items posted within a given slice of time. After studying the capabilities of a number of search engines and social media, our intrepid investigators chose Twitter as their hunting ground. With one exception deemed overly speculative (as described above), they came up empty. No evidence of precogniscience appeared in roughly a trillion tweets. They further performed a number of related searches, which came up empty.

So maybe you can only time travel into the future (and not via the boring waiting-for-things-to-happen way). Or perhaps savvy time travelers have ways of dealing with physicists who spot them and talk about it.

The Biggest Danger to U-2 Pilots

Is not what you think.

Part of flying the U-2 at operational altitudes at and above 70,000 feet, well over twice the altitude that is unable to support life, is knowing and managing the medical risks, the cockpit pressurization system (which only pressurizes the aircraft to 29,000 feet, not the comfortable 8,000 feet of a jetliner)  and the pilot's pressure suit (the only thing that will keep him alive if his cockpit pressurization fails, or if he has to abandon the aircraft without descending into thicker air). The aeromedical risks include the scourges of mountaineers - high altitude pulmonary edema and high altitude cerebral edema. But there's also a constant risk of Decompression Sickness (DCS): as divers have long known it, "the bends."

And for a number of possible reasons U-2 pilots are suffering from DCS more and more in recent years.

US Government Prepares to Regulate Hand and Face Transplants

The SEC Wants To Regulate All Crowdfunding

"Proposed new rules require that funding portals register with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Intermediary Regulatory Authority. In addition, investors must have access to a business plan, use of proceeds, a valuation of the company, and financials, so Certified Public Accountants may be needed. The SEC estimates that for amounts under $100,000, the fees will be 12.9% to 39% of the money raised, though it may drop to under 8% for higher amounts.

Because everything must be regulated by the government even if currently it has no problems. Or else CHAOS!

"When a man masturbates in public, it's creepy and it's criminal and women feel at best grossed out and at worst violated. When a woman masturbates in public, it's .. a really funny article for Cosmoplitan?"

Pervy for him, patriarchy-smashing for her.

On the train, I clandestinely turned the vibrator on, but couldn't figure out a comfortable way to sit because they don't have helpful pamphlets on the ergonomics of public masturbation. Also, I was dripping tzatziki sauce on my skirt. From somewhere else in the car came the whooping cough of a small child, which oddly enough was not doing it for me sexually.  By Union Square, it was working physically, but to have an orgasm you also have to be in The Zone mentally, and I was about eighty miles and one off-road path from The Zone, no matter how hard I tried.. I did not have an orgasm. However I finished my gyro, which was actually pretty good.

27 Jerry Coleman, a former second baseman for the New York Yankees and Hall of Fame broadcaster who interrupted his pro career to fly as a Marine Corps pilot in World War II and Korea, died Sunday after a brief illness, the San Diego Padres said. He was 89. Coleman spent more than 70 years in pro baseball, a career that included four World Series titles with the Yankees and was interrupted by World War II and the Korean War, when he served as a Marine Corps pilot. He flew 120 missions combined in the two wars. Coleman was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, 13 Air Medals and three Navy Citations. Around Petco Park and on Padres radio broadcasts, Coleman was known as "The Colonel," having retired from the Marines with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was the only major leaguer to see combat in two wars. In October 1951, Coleman found out that Marine pilots from World War II were not discharged, but on inactive status and that he'd be going to Korea for 18 months. He missed the bulk of two seasons. "Your country is bigger than baseball," said Coleman, who added that he took his physical along with Ted Williams in Jacksonville in 1952. Williams, a San Diego native, also was a Marine pilot in World War II, but didn't see combat duty. He did fly combat missions in Korea. Coleman & Williams, 2 of America's Best

48 Watching physics documentaries about time travel I've learned that it's possible if you take into account the multiverse theory of parallel universes, the many worlds theory that every time you make a decision or choose an action, the universe splits. If you did travel into the past, it would be a parallel past, thus avoiding the grandfather paradox (where you kill your grandfather, thus invalidating your own existence.)

55 Fun from the right sidebar: http://tinyurl.com/lrx3qu9 The eruption of a “supervolcano” hundreds of times more powerful than conventional volcanoes – with the potential to wipe out civilisation as we know it – is more likely than previously thought, a study has found. An analysis of the molten rock within the dormant supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park in the United States has revealed that an eruption is possible without any external trigger, scientists said. And http://tinyurl.com/pbtxofc “There is very strong evidence suggesting that the Ventura fault system has experienced several magnitude 8 earthquakes in the past few thousand years,” Marshall said. In comparison, the next “big one” on the San Andreas is expected to be in the magnitude 7.7 – 7.9 range. Given that the Ventura fault is much closer to major population centers in southern California, Marshall said, “Maybe the San Andreas isn’t the most dangerous fault in town.”

When Anna Puma asked on Soviet Leaders I flashed to Brezhnev.  People forget just how long he held the football.  Second only to Stalin any success of his rule was simply the gradual recovery from Stalin and WW2 by 1970 the "growth"(which was really a return to a non STalinzed mean) was gone.

Brezhnev presided over the slow implosion of the Soviet economy and the cratering of the Soviet local party system oversight to the point that by the time the "3 new bosses in 4.5 years" period was over Gorbachev was stuck in an unsustainable clusterfuck with a zombified party base.

If any of this sounds eerily familiar look hard at labor participation and actual inflation indexed GDP growth.

If Obama allows the 22d to remove him from overt power he won't have the apparent Brezhnev seat BUT we're gonna elect another donk and on and on.

It took Brezhnevonomics and his apathy a quarter century to obliterate the Soviet Union....

I am betting we're locked in.

The thing is I am slowly accepting that if not a majority too large a plurality think these last five years are just ducky EXCEPT for the GOP having the House and the Tea Party being allowed ANY political voice at all.  In an environment like that the idea that I should hold my tongue ONLY until the pendulum returns to mean is folly.  May as well be clear and take any lumps that come.

That's WHY it happened. The same will be true of Hillary!! It's inevitable...

This quote made me LOL: Mrs. Elin Flagg Young, superintendent of schools, testified that she thought the nude in art should not be seen by children younger than fourteen. Right. 6 year old viewing nude painting: "She looks funny. What are those bumps? She should put on some clothes." 14 year old viewing nude painting: "BRB."

142 Who knows? Maybe Gabe is correct.  The answer may very well be to stop being angry at their vitriol, calumnies, and otherizing of us to use their term and simply enjoy the best clubs in Georgetown or wherever.

The thing is, I happen to have believed Lee Atwater when he said that the best way to get left alone is to bother them first.

I did a lot of reflecting on the trip, saw a lot of carnage on the freeways from low visibility, and was flooded out of my hotel in Columbus Indiana.

In other words barring any of the cars and semis that wrecked having people dead I had a good time.

If we are trying to defend a properly civil republic with the goal of having genuine equality and unity so far as foreign policy goes why would I not be inspired to try to destroy the people on the other side of the aisle who have NO interest in those goals except as it relates to obliterating my policy preferences so completely they are taboo to be mentioned in public?

Things I am pondering.

Keep your heads up, follow your conscience with regards to this election season, and try to hold on to as much that is good as you can.

162 OT: from the food thread the brownies with the homemade toffee sauce came out great, yum..yum. I forgot to mention a product called "Whey Low" sugar. It's an all natural sugar substitute that tastes like sugar and can be used in place of sugar measure for measure. It is not calorie free though, it has 1/4 the calories if I recall correctly, but it is suitable for diabetics. It comes in granulated, powder, and brown sugar form. My doctors PA told me about it. I've only tried it a few times in icing and some cookies and really couldn't tell the difference. They have a website wheylow.com

165 Melissa Harris-Perry cried to keep her job. The Dan Rather Lesson. After Dan tried his best to juice up a dishonest slur to defeat George Bush in 2004 (remember "fake but accurate'?), he was fired, and the Top Men at CBS when to the White House to apologize for the whole thing. Then, back to business!! Harris - Perry is still the Leftist witch she was last month, last week, and next month and forever after. Martin Bashir is presently invisible, but he will be "re-habilitated" and re-appear as a Leftist Media Soldier somewhere else. The same with Keith Olbermann. He was exiled for a while, but has now re-surfaced as the same obnoxious asshole he was before. In a few years, he will move back into a Media mouthpiece position again. Maybe in time to denounce Governor Donut as "the worst person in the world!!" in October 2016.

186 130 Earlier tonight I read the sidebar link about the "September Morn" controversy. Very interesting. If the bluenoses hadn't had such a hissy fit about it, the painting would have languished in obscurity instead of becoming world famous. I do believe there's a metaphor about the War on Drugs somewhere in there. This quote made me LOL: Mrs. Elin Flagg Young, superintendent of schools, testified that she thought the nude in art should not be seen by children younger than fourteen. Right. 6 year old viewing nude painting: "She looks funny. What are those bumps? She should put on some clothes." 14 year old viewing nude painting: "BRB." Posted by: rickl at January 05, 2014 10:47 PM (sdi6R) Controversy sells. The owner of a radio station I used to work at told me a story about when the radio station changed formats, and it was a scene out of WKRP. An EZ listening station to Top40, and the blue hairs were none too happy. They came out and protested, but it being January, they started to get cold. When it looked like the protests would fizzle out, he had hot chocolate and coffee delivered to them to keep them on the line. His reasoning? People driving by would be curious as to what was going on and would tune in, plus any coverage by the newspaper and tv stations was just free advertising for the format change. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these groups "concerned" about violence in movies aren't funded by the movie companies to just generate controversy.

270 Sven and Ole are up fixing the roof. Sven picks up a nail, looks at it, and throws it away.
He picks up the next one, looks at it, and hammers it into the roof
The next one, he hammers it into the roof; the next one, he throws it away.
Ole says, "Sven, why do you throw away half the nails?"
Sven says, "Ole, don't you see, they have the point on the wrong end!"
Ole says, “Sven, don't be such a dummy! Those are for the OTHER side of the roof!”

By the way, I won't be running for President in 2016, as Hillary has promised me Secretary of State. It's a higher office. About 38,000 ft. Hillary says.

Cooke at National Review, and Ace himself (during the Duck Dynasty kerfuffle) all have made as well: the obsessive scalp-collecting culture that both sides have embraced in recent years is obnoxious, censorious, and ultimately soul-sapping. I think Melissa Harris-Perry is a brainless idiot, but she's made two apologies (neither of which was an insufferable "sorry if you're offended" non-apology) and at this point what are you looking for by continuing to push onward? Her head on a pike? Yes, I get that the nasties on the Left love to push this sort of campaign, but as for me at least, I don't even think there's much to be gained from a game theory tit-for-tat strategy here. Posted by: Jeff B. 2.0 - newly upgraded with fiancee! at January 05, 2014 11:52 PM (ewYO6) Gotta agree. If we were going to collect her scalp, it would have been collected already. MSNBC decided that this wasn't on the same level as Bashir or Baldwin's rants, so she stays. A non-US employee and a white male actor are very easy "gets", a black woman? Only thing more ungettable would be a black lesbian. BTW, with the whole Kluwe affair, it appears that the gheys are now an even more protected class than AA's since Leslie Frasier is being raked over the coals for being a "coward", but not a bigot since that is reserved for the white coaches.

Gabe has a point, and your belief is noble. We've seen the outcome of this sort of response. MHP apologized, tearfully ... what are the odds that she has visions of meeting Martin "Descendant of Plenty Cousins" Bashir in the unemployment line, and THAT is what drove her to directly apologize? It's not like her comment was an off-the-cuff slip, or just a bad choice of her writer. The segment looks to have been planned. It's easily as bad as Bashir's spew ... the First Daughters have always been off-limits, and this is public knowledge. Romney is now a private citizen; two reasons why MHP should be standing next to Bashir in the unemployment line. How about we demand that the networks enforce some minimal amount of fairness and restraint in the daily on-air reports of their employees? Perhaps demand some intelligence too, and pre-spew fact-checking are in order ... maybe by the LSU Provost ... MHP will have all sorts of problems.

510 The exercise programs are not on TV any more as the show itself is not profitable  anymore on the TV ads alone. They make more money if they record one workout and put it out on DVD with a whole weightless program than 100-150 episodes per year of a simple workout. The shows morphed into infomercials for the DVD. They Biggest loser is also what they became. It is better to see a fat person lose weight that for a fat person at home lose it with them.

Made popular in part by Firefly's correct usage of it in context to 1850s-1890s US English which at the time was closer to the Mother Tongue and had not yet had Teddy Roosevelt take his Presidential clippers to the dictionary...

removing the u from colour and a slew of other things that must drive you, if not batty at least to reflect on the "minor" differences between the Commonwealth and America.

American English was influenced by Teddy's alterations to spelling and minor tweaks to US punctuation and a relaxation of the heretofore chruning without restriction between Canada and America coupled with the immigration waves from Europe widened the split and over time reduced some of the more eloquent turns of phrase and semi-archaic word usage that had been common.

Have a good evening AOP.

603 I call BS on the Air & Space U-2 comment: In the Soviet flyover days, U-2 pilots would head out to a target, snap pictures, and fly back. They could even sleep part of the way, letting the airplane fly on autopilot. Today, pilots must quickly react to changes on the battlefield, acting as a mobile relay station for communications and an eye in the sky for troops fighting on difficult terrain. TheyÂ’re also in constant contact with the soldiers on the ground, often during combat. Maybe over the ocean. For like five minutes. I read some fascinating accounts by U-2 pilots in a book about building the SR-71. They knew from their very first flights that they were vulnerable to ground based Soviet anti-aircraft missiles. They were constantly scanning for missile tracks. The Cold War era U-2 pilots also had plenty of routine tasks to do. One pilot explained that if a pilot saw a missile track his instructions were to fool it with an S turn. The pucker factor derived from the fact that the first part of the turn was directly into the missile track. Got more than one track? Go for the closest one and hope the other ones miss. Another pilot watched with fascination and a bit of horror as he saw two Soviet interceptors collide in mid-air as they tried to zoom climb high enough to fire air-to-air missiles at him. There's an interesting comment about the article by somebody obviously involved with the program. According to the Air & Space article, the Air Force says exercise combined with pre-breathing before flights has helped. The commentator (who sounds pretty knowledgeable) says the problems *started* with the addition of exercise. I don't know who to believe but I'd bet on a SNAFU with the Air Force, using Occam's razor. At least the F-22 pilots needn't feel alone strangling to get enough oxygen at altitude.

611 Lovely that they put parts built in China into our (supposed) next generation fighter.

How'd you like to be in one and wondering if they built a back door into the chips in your avionics that can be activated from afar or maybe even just broadcast by that missile coming up on your 6?

This is treasonable in my opinion.

And that's no counting the rest of the mess that the F-35 has become.

If you have and they haven't I would surely mention it to the wife. WTF? As far as the kids, do they pay their way there? If they don't, actually even if they don't, and they ignored your birthday I'd send 'em on down the road. Doesn't have to be much, just a card would count. Why would they be so insensitive?

Sure Anna. Approval rating is taking the positive views minus the negatives -- and he's been underwater (negative) for quite a while.

But it can always be lower. Pond scum lower. Dirtbag lower. I'm just loving his latest lie, where his own half-brother has called him a fucking liar about how often they've met.

782 OK, I have now managed a long-deferred piss-break, and I'm back. Joffen seemed to be back to a normal status when we ended our convo -- seemed a bit withdrawn when he first answered. He is gobsmacked at how much the Horde takes care of its own. I told him some anecdotes about meeting morons IRL [the clean ones], and let him know we cared. He doesn't need any more phone calls at the moment, but is looking forward to being more in contact as circumstances permit.....and laughing with us when he hits DEFCON 2 instead of hitting the alarm when he gets to DEFCON 5.

Hi, Teresa!!!! You were a great assist, 'cause it helped to show that caring comes from The Horde as a whole. Having two folks from two different parts of the country give him the same message in two ways with two accents really boosted his spirits.

Thanks to all the Horde who tried but didn't get through -- he was saying "There's a call coming in from area code 757" and I'd say, "yeah....that's around Norfolk, VA"

798 Morning, CC.

It's kind of a no man's land of sleep. I'm too awake to go back to bed, but I have to go in to work early this afternoon and will probably be pretty tired by the time I get off. So, I'll probably end up taking a nap before going in.

803 Carol, no such thing that I'm aware of.  Infectious stuff that lasts that long is rare--off the top of my head, mono, pertussis, hepatitis A, Lyme, walking pneumonia, TB.  There are some others but they're either exotic (malaria, Dengue) or blood-borne (hepatitis B, C) or STDs (syphillis).  If you've been treated with a pneumonia antibiotic like Levaquin or Z-pak already, pneumonia is less likely.  Pertussis is roaring back big time thanks to Jenny McCarthy, although if you've had a tetanus booster in the past 10 years you should have gotten re-vaccinated against that.  Hep A can last for months but is usually more vomiting and diarrhea than anything else.

Posted by: shredded chi, a little happier than last year at January 06, 2014 02:05 AM (xnkrD)

828 I don't know if Shredded chii is around. He seemed to be around earlier. but I was conked out I just wanted to address the subject of prayer. I don't claim to be an expert at prayer.. :^). I just like to do it. I like the advice above about it being a conversation with God ) Of Course it takes discernment to know what God is saying back and sometimes time. But as far as our end, you just talk to God, Here's just one example if you're new to prayer "Hey God, I'm not sure you exist but Jesus who seems like a pretty cool guy said you did and the Bible said he and God were one, so here goes....."Just be as honest as you can. "I feel crummy" or I am worried about such and such or I'm pissed at the state or the world or I need peace and I want to be a more joyful loving person. You can use prayers from the psalms that seem to relate and say them. They are prayers, and songs to God. You can also use Jesus' prayer and talk "in between the words. For example, "Our Father... (The Bible says that you're a good father so I want to be a good son or daughter,,,) brother. Please show me how. Who art in heaven,,,,,(Who art all around us") Hallowed be thy name (Help me to treasure and respect your name.) They Kingdom come (In me, Lord, Set your throne in my heart)..... They will be done (Your will be done, not mine ...( etc, You can also use breath prayers. As you breathe is say something like " Lord Jesus Christ" and as you breathe out "have mercy on me a sinner" That is on old prayer, and you just say that for some time as a medititative practice. I hope some of this makes sense and is helpul. And the good thing about this place, ch,i is that people of faith can pray for each other. :^) Regular prayer/meditative practices can lower blood pressure and anxiety, :^)

I should have been more clear -- jc's the moose specialist, and I'm well-aware that the great majority of states don't have actual....er, meese (?). But iced-over roads that even wildlife can't cope with are found much more generally. I'm worried about the BH's ability to cope with the roads rather than her ability to cope with a moose encounter in NC.

That's much nearer the BH, who is near Greensboro. It's not that I consider other areas unliveable -- it's like when I've had staffers go to England on business....the UK is like Disneyland as far as international travel goes -- people are polite, the language issue is laughably small, people know to stand in line, and consumer products work like you expect.....but you need to stop and look both ways when crossing streets like you haven't done since 3rd grade -- because people are driving on the wrong side of the street, and if you let your trained instincts do what they usually do, you'll step right into traffic blindly and be killed.

I've just slowly become infatuated with it over the past couple of months.

871 When MHP was on Twitchy, I responded to a tweet that these fools feel just comfy talking like they do at home because their is {usually} no backlash

Since MSNBC panels are lefties trying to outdo each other what they say is tamer than what they'd say IRL

>>but you need to stop and look both ways when crossing streets like you haven't done since 3rd grade -- because people are driving on the wrong side of the street, and if you let your trained instincts do what they usually do, you'll step right into traffic blindly and be killed.

.Kind of like when I came home on leave from Japan and rented a car at the airport after driving on the left side of the road for three years.  It didn't go well for awhile.

No blame -- I was just thinking that things were squared away and that little detail was introducing some doubt.....it probably wouldn't have bothered most people, but my career has been in auditing and managing financial operations -- where you get hypersensitive to those little details. I've had worse bouts of sleeplessness wondering why my intercompany eliminations entries seemed screwy.

Everyone needs to sleep, though -- some sooner than others.

You live once in any big city, you learn to cross streets with your head on a swivel as the traffic could be coming from any direction.

@ Nevergieup

I know it's not nice to speak ill of the dead but the plain fact is Gerry Coleman couldn't hit worth a damn.  As evidenced by the fact he was replaced by Billy Martin who couldn't hit much better.

877 People who actively scorn 'breeders', and who clapped when Obamacare redefined dependents to include pajamaboy 'children' up to 26... Now are proclaiming their 'right' to rule over the very offspring they wish I never had!? All kinds of crazy. Infanticide doubled in the US following Roe v. Wade (even as murder fell in ALL other age groups). These people told us every child would be wanted. Instead, they broke our society in a fundamental way.
