The Agonies of the Feminist Left
And what made Collette so very, very rageful? Apparently the existence of this:
Which is a classic example of my theory of Conservation of Misery which posits that most people have a more or less fixed amount of angst/anxiety/anger hardwired into them.
Now in the past this emotional energy was expended on such real and worthwhile concerns as wolves, starvation, murder, sorcery, and barbarians. But today in a world of vastly more health, wealth and safety we still have this free-floating mass of concern inside us which demands catharsis. So we end up focusing it on ever more trivial and rare (or even non-existent) targets such as global warming, food preservatives, rampant child abduction, people wrong on the internet, and the existence of male-targeted potato chips. Oh THE OUTRAGE!!
Former GOP Senator Dick Lugar Donates to Democratic Candidate in GA
Well I guess he can finally stop pretending to be conservative and we can stop pretending he was really a Republican. (Thanks to Slu for the link)
In Colorado You Can Legally Have Pot or a Gun But Not Both
Because while Colorado may have legalized pot, the federal government has not and so question 11E on ATF Form 4473 still applies: "Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant or narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?" So you can buy your pot legally in CO but the ATF still considers it an illegal drug and thus a disqualification from buying or possessing firearms.
China and Japan: No, No You're More Voldemort-like
For China's envoy, Lui Xiaoming, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's year-end visit to Yasukuni Shrine - where Japan's war dead are honored - was evidence that dark forces were at play at the heart of the administration in Tokyo."In the Harry Potter story, the dark wizard Voldemort dies hard because the seven horcruxes, which contain parts of his soul, have been destroyed," he wrote. "If militarism is like the haunting Voldemort of Japan, the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo is a kind of horcrux, representing the darkest parts of that nation's soul."
...It took Japan just a few days to respond in kind, again in the pages of the Daily Telegraph. "East Asia is now at a crossroads," Japan's envoy to London, Keiichi Hayashi, wrote. "There are two paths open to China. One is to seek dialogue, and abide by the rule of law. The other is to play the role of Voldemort in the region by letting loose the evil of an arms race and escalation of tensions, although Japan will not escalate the situation from its side."
"It only works if the round is in the chamber," delivered sotto voce by the drill instructor, is the greatest putdown evar, but Private Urkel is just warming up at that point.
Now ordinarily YouTube comments are cesspit of snark and general douchiness and ignorance. But in this case some commenters actually put some knowledge into the usual insult warriors by pointing out that a) these are recruits just beginning their training b) they're screwing up but are being corrected on the spot which is the point of training c) there's a reason why they're yelling and following a script and d) they're probably sleep deprived, physically exhausted and hungry. So yeah Private Urkel may have amusingly fucked up in the video but that doesn't mean he is a fuck-up.
And in fact the drill sergeant who filmed this chimed in and added this comment:
That would be my video that my wife posted on Army WTF moments over three years ago. That's right, I'm the DS doing the video. The point wasn't to humiliate the recruits but to capture moments of their training through out BCT. The videos and photos I took during their training was shared with the recruits upon their graduation and showed and shared with their permission. I have since retired from the Army in 2012 and from what I understand those two recruits went on the become outstanding Soldiers.

Yep.
Mourdock was a guy who made an infelicitous choice of words about a position that could be politically defensible if better stated. Akin used completely accurate phrasing to relate his position on an issue, a position which was caveman ignorant and batshit crazy. And, Mourdock might have survived his tangled tongue if not preceded immediately by Akin.
But, that said, two more key things:
(a) There really isn't any excuse for Mourdock not having a list of carefully worded statements on controversial issues pre-drilled to utter perfection, because it's GUARANTEED that the auxiliary arm of the Democratic Party which we call "the media" will deliberately ask questions about just those issues, hoping to provoke a gaffe. That's both candidate failure, and campaign manager failure.
(b) As much as Dick Lugar was an eminence of the Permanent Bipartisan Fusion Party with no particular conservative allegiance, nevertheless, having him in the Senate with an (R) after his name meant one fewer seat that had to be fought for in the name of turning Dingy Harry into the Senate Minority Leader. The nominal party seat count matters.

Granddad was in the military-police for the British sector; Mum grew up learning German.
So based on what I've heard at home, I'm interested in these snippets:
The film took far longer to make than had originally been envisaged. By late 1945, the need for it began to wane. The Allied military government decided that rubbing the Germans' noses in their own guilt wouldn't help with postwar reconstruction.
and
Billy Wilder, who directed Death Mills (1945), an American film about the German atrocities, was forthright about why he did not want atrocity footage to be seen in later years. Wilder questioned whether it had worked in "re-educating" the German civilian population about what their leaders had been doing in their name.
What I was told is that, as soon as the Brits had carved out their niche in the postwar German occupation, we did "rub the Germans' noses in their own guilt". The Brits at least had a "werewolf" problem; pro-Nazi terrorist diehards. So these occupiers (I can't speak for the French or Americans) forced all the west Germans who thought that maybe the tales from the East were a bit much, to watch the footage and to see the files from what had been going on closer to home: Dachau etc.
And yes, the Brits did share notes with the Frogs and Yanks.
And also also, it was the general consensus that showing the Germans what horrors they'd visited upon the rest of Europe did help in getting at least the Bundesrepublik on board with de-nazifying their own.
Interested in hearing what descendents of Americans (or French) in Germany of the 1940s-50s have to say on this . . .

Sven my boy, the best thing for the uber-State is to have dual conflicting legal systems, thus you can buy pot in CO, but not transport it across state lines. Purchasing pot in CO automatically forwards your ID (which you don't need to vote) to the BATFE so you can be denied firearms ownership rights at the federal level. The uber-State can later decide that its laws trump state laws, and selectively and retroactively prosecute anyone foolish enough to partake of the CO pot laws. (Side note, this would not be deemed an ex post facto law by Holder, because the uber-state never took the drug laws off the books). And so on...

Correct, I just argued that in the Smokin! thread actually. I think this is a cagey play by the anti gun nuts to pit a Jedi HandWaved right against an enumerated right and ideally to create an embittered class of gunowners who can't get more guns.

And legalizing weed will change this how. Yes it is currently illegal now. But real easy to get. And in highschool just as easy if not easier than beer. Which may be a good argument for legalization. Every sale a pot dealer does is illegal so they have less incentive to avoid selling to kids.

Nunn, running as a centrist Democrat, has received support from conservatives in the months since she jumped into the race. Former Sen. John Warner (R-Va.), another former colleague of Nunn's father, made a $500 contribution to her campaign and attended a fundraiser in November.
Nunn also received donations from Tom Cousins and Jim Cox Kennedy, contributors to the Republican National Committee and Mitt Romney campaign in 2012.

I loved it. They really do speak their own language there. For instance, one of the pictures is of a letter that was taped up next to the Health Department closedown notice at a Glasgow fish-n-chips place. Apparently the restaurant had rodents running around. Anyway, it read (verbatim):
"Whae geez a FUCK about MICE!??? I dinnae go tae a chippy tae get healthy ya CUNTS! Health inspectors please piss off."
There's also an awesome letter that Sean Connery wrote to Steve Jobs in 1990 in which Connery refused to do any ads for the Macintosh. Connery finished the letter: "You are a computer salesman -- I am fucking JAMES BOND!"

BUT that is not gonna happen SO
Hell yeah legalize it all, and we will subsidize it and ship it to your door with the USPS my friends.

How old is the american made Strat? That sounds like a relatively low price even for a recent one... not sure. It could be a good buy, but I can't view the links with that or the cabronita T (which I know jack about anyway).
Are you in, or near a major metro area? You should be able to get a used mex Tele for a bit less than $550, mind you it might be a corker, can you get a friend who knows tele's to check it out for you? Thing is, if you're not in an area with a lot of choices guitar wise, the price might be about right for a good used one. IIRC, that's around the price of a new one?

Looking around for more info on the Cabronita, turns out it's about the price you could expect to pay for a new one. MSRP is apparently around $799.
Unfortunately, I don't live near a metro-area. Though, I'm not all that far from Nashville, which I assume is teeming with Telecasters. I may just have to take a road trip sometime soon.

The Strat isn't an actual fender? If not, you can do better for that price. Jeez, man... you live near Nashville??? Damn straight it would be teeming with Telecasters! Seriously, DDR, don't dick around with the little league... Get your ass to Nashville. It would be worth it. You're bound to find a ferociously good fender T there... maybe even an old classic for can't-pass-on-it price. There might be some 70's telecaster sitting in a pawn shop for god knows how little.

I just struggle with knowing what a good price for guitars are based on their age. For example, last week, there was a 1979 Tele in a local classified for $3000. And I rarely see newer "real" Teles for less than $800. So, when I see something for less, I'm automatically intrigued.

584 I thought you said you were in socali. That's where me and CAC live.
586 Stock 70's Strats and Teles sucked even back then. Only good for investment and unless you REALLY know what you're doing it's VERY EASY to get burned. New stuff plays better and has WAY better electronics. Hit up Big'n James and remember cash is king

586 Shit for $3K you could get one of everything you wanted.

You can do better for a 79 tele than $3000. 79's ok... but early 70's is much, much better, for around that mark, or even less, with some wear and tear. Don't worry about what they look like.

You'll notice that -- like this comment -- most people copy the comment they're talking about. We'd put links, but the blog software has severe and unpredictable limitations. Anyway, if you put the link you're replying to, you can get several distinct "conversations" going in the same thread at the same time -- and if you don't quote what you're responding to, it's very easy to accidentally hurt someone. For instance:
Commenter A: "Hey, remember that class I was so far behind with? I managed to actually pull a B in it!"
Commenter B (totally different subject): "My goldfish just died."
Commenter C (responding to Commenter A): "Hey, that's great! You've got quite the knack for turning things around."
Commenter B: "That's not fair! I had this one for FIVE YEARS, and it's only the second one I've killed!"
Which, of course, only leads to chaos.

what I meant was -- the article explains the wiring and how the switch sets up the strat to run the pickups in manners that mimic tele's.

But it did seem to keep him amused.

According to the report, the first unit on scene was a Boiling Spring
Lakes officer who arrived at 12:34 p.m. He was joined shortly after by
two additional BSL officers and a Brunswick County Sheriff's Deputy.
The first unit on scene reported a confrontation in the hallway, but told Brunswick County Dispatchers several times that everything was OK.
Unit 104 from Southport arrived on the scene at 12:48:41, fourteen minutes after the first officer had already been on scene.
Seventy seconds later, Unit 104 radioed out that he had to fire shots at the subject in order to defend himself.
So it was 4 officers on scene total, 14 minute duration, reported that the situation was "ok" and 70 seconds later an outsider had placed a projectile in an at a minimum partially restrained "perp."
Yeah I am still not seeing a path to a "clean" shoot.

I tried....but deciding to change your nic in the middle of his endless goodbyes hit my panic button. We've had trolls, paid trolls, compu-trolls, LGF trolls, mobys, and need I remind anyone why Ace punted on the first-ever Breitbart award? -- and having a stranger pop-up and try to "push our buttons" is a cause for vigilance -- and, yet, "our buttons" are predicated on our love of God, our country, our fellow man, our principles, and honoring Service. It ain't likely we'll be walking away from that shortly.
I hope 0341 comes back and becomes a regular, and I hope he's a real human being who can interact with The Horde and benefit from that interaction. But I didn't need another unfamiliar name popping up and talking about barrel lengths just right then.

You ever have one of those mornings where you just wake up at 0330, and can't get back to sleep?
So then you make a pot of coffee, and lurk amongst the Morons for a few hours?
Yeh...it's like that this morning.
And now I have to talk to my local adult toy store, and see why they only mailed one magazine, instead of the two that they owe me to a certain Pennsylvania address, where 30 rd magazines are legal.

I cannot imagine a person with a preference or a SBR from an accuracy stand-point unless they had a professional need.
Just my 1/2 pence.

I'm a 2ndA fundamentalist -- I believe that it was written and enacted by a bunch of guys who had just fought off the greatest military of that era.....and that it was surely meant to ensure that citizens would never be outgunned by their government. Accordingly, I would expect that citizens could purchase and own munitions that were forbidden to the government, and not vice-versa.

FoxNews-Letter alleges Boehner was briefed in on Benghazi Ops...
and THAT is why I suspect JohnBoehner is not backing Issa's investigation...
I am thinking Obama threatened to expose CIA ops if he was made to pay the piper and try to paint the GOP in congress as the driving force in the op.
Which is retarded sir, as Dede "Catfish" Jenteal would say. CIA is under Choom King's broach. I would not be the least bit shocked if Choom King got a US Ambassador killed trying to buy back the guns we gave them....

It could be. It's a local store run by about three people who are learning the ropes of being a FFL in Maryland as fast as they can.
But some of the mistakes that they have made in the last five months can drive you right up the wall.
I had to point out to them that when I purchased the gun that it came with the upgrade to two mags.
And that while we waited for it to arrive, the ban on 20 rd mags went into effect, so they just scooped them out of the case when it arrived, and put the mags in the back office.
Just like they told a friend of mine that because he was buying two regulated weapons, he had to wait sixty days, and pick them both up on the same day, instead of one at ten days after submission of the Maryland paperwork, and the second one thirty days after the first.

Was not calling you out Cthulu, I would be thrilled with more liberal gun laws and I do not mean gun laws BY liberals unless they had a severe change of heart.
I know of exactly zero legally owned AOWs used in crimes.....and I assure you were there a high volume the media would be all over it.
I hope the laws change more to my liking. until that day comes we must jump through the hoops and bear the idiocy.

Heh well "Maryland" but yeah I am certain it is frustrating.
My baseline opinion of Maryland LE was formed in the wake of the one Trooper on the Motorcycle in plain clothes off-duty who drew down on a bike that passed him speeding while he was speeding on a busy road....
it was all caught on video and the state was trying to bust the guy who had a helmet cam not Wyatt Earp who was breaking the law himself.
Pretty terrain in some spots, not so pretty a State House or civil service.

FoxNews-Sister of American jailed in North Korea 'outraged' by Rodman's actions
Noted International Human Rights Expert Dennis Rodman.....
The whole thing is silly, but hey we live in a silly celebretard age.
I hope the woman's brother is safe and I hope Rodman is alive.

Come on ya big lug, give us a hug"
Just kidding.
But seriously, it seems that the events taking place both in our nation, and the world are causing many of us to re-examine our positions on many things.
And in many cases, we do wind up skirting close to paranoia.

Cthulu you've always been a fave, it is not raging paranoia to be reasonably wary....and that line varies for people.
I usually try to avoid too much gun talk in non gun threads, but NCJ has been ruminating on a recipe for a build for two weeks IIRC.
Keep on plugging.

I have decided to be less cryptic and more free with my data while also understanding upon reflection we are probably in a budding police state.
I think the only solution is to generate SO many spikes of "noise" that it overloads their capacity to fuck with every noise source.
A cornerstone of jamming in the "mechanical" electronics sense.
Evidently the American people think the King using the civil service as his personal political hatchet team is just ducky up to and including uneven application of the law.
That means this is not a temporary flu of the populace but the beginning of a long march into night.

Gotta pretty much agree with you on that.
I sometimes wonder about the feelings of the average European back around1935 or so.
So what kind of sew on badge do you think we will get in the camps?

....and here's the thing -- I don't alert on that at all. It has context, it has value, it pursues lawful aims. Some schmo I've never seen before shows up and starts blurting crap about Sarin recipes......and I'm thinking: "it's a plant, here to start trouble, trying to get some unwary soul to ask, "oh, is that with scented or unscented bleach?" and become a co-conspirator.
I'm comfy enough with regular commenters and regular discussions.
And, BTW, the adrenaline has got me bouncing a bit, but there's nothing behind it, so I'm going to keep ranting a bit until I stagger into the other room and conk out.

Red Stars or Red Eagles I suspect...
The King has a sense of humor, and loves a good pun. He, a Communist by rearing if not personal policy choice under his impression would be thrilled to force his foes to wear his tribal badge. The hilarious thing is how effective the calumny has been.
The GOP for better or worse was legislative steward to the period of longest sustained growth in the last 50 years and is rewarded for it by being cast as less qualified to stabilize and navigate a recovery to mean by the populace fueled by overt lies by the media.
The American people learned SO MUCH from the 08 recession that we are reinflating the same goddamned bubble that caused it this time with a direct transfer of Xerox bucks to the brokerage banks.
Classical definition of insanity? Repetition of method with sincere expectation of new result. I'd say we qualify as a nation.

sven, I'm still listening to the podcast and I've come to a firm conclusion -- He really is a member of the Horde. Ideologically, he understands the issues that the nation faces. And he has some personal insights that really make the case for him (eg, adopting a black child).
If Hollyweird was a lot more like Nick, the message that would go out would be radically different from the Sarandon/Redford/Sean Penn/Damon turdfest that gets the most exposure.

I suspected Searcy was a conservative when I saw Castaway his delivery was either awesome acting or genuine or both. Wound up thinking it was both. Justified cemented it.
He and I interact from time to time on twitter even with my new account...
the reason I KNOW he lurks here and psts?
The first time he deigned to interact with me in the wake of my 3300+ post week he starts by calling me "Mr. 3000" and giving me guff about "I would hope you got your point across" on my old twitter account before I nuked it.
Twitter is almost worth it just for Chuck Woolery, Pat Sajak, and Searcy's tweet lines.
