Overnight Open Thread (1-8-2014)
— Maetenloch

Well due to a long and exciting day at work full of surprises and plot twists I've got basically nothing for the ONT. So dregs it will be.

Are You Tone-Deaf?

Well you can take the test here and find out.

think-you-might-be-tone-deaf-online-musical-test-will-diagnose-you-minutes.w654

Continue to Remind the Alarmists that It's Cold Out. They Deserve It.

Trolling global warmists is both easy and fun. And a bit of justice as well. Even if Glenn Beck may not approve.

One of my smaller pleasures in life is joking during winter that, by now, I was promised flying cars and global warming. If you haven't noticed, it's really cold out! Where's all this global warming that was supposed to deliver us from 7 degree weather? We've been bamboozled. Etc.

Whenever one makes a joke like this, the super serial types get super serial, put their scolding hats on, and start shaking their fingers. "Don't do that! Just because it's cold out, that doesn't mean global warming isn't real! The temps are going up! Dogs and cats, living together! Sputter sputter sputter!" See, for instance, this. Or this far less literate take (BOROWITZ WARNING). And that's why these jokes are so fun to make. The global warming alarmists are the easiest people to troll in the entire world. You don't even have to make a particularly good or original joke to set them off. Just say "Man, this cold weather sure does disprove global warming," sit back, and watch the fireworks.

This is an especially amusing tactic since, without fail, every single global warming alarmist (and, thus, every single media outlet) screams GLOBAL WARMING at the top of their lungs at every adverse weather event that doesn't involve simple cold.

How Many Workers Actually Make Just the Minimum Wage?

Answer: Just 1.1%.

But their situation will account for 58%* of all Democratic politicians' political rhetoric. I'm already tired on hearing about it and we're nowhere near 2016.

Do Elephants Have Souls?

This essay is long (60+ pages) and delves into the lives of elephants and what it means to have consciousness and a soul. It's long but also very very good.

The taboo against anthropomorphism exists for three basic reasons. First of all, we as human beings are prone to mistake the thoughts and feelings of each other, even the people we are closest to - how much more so is this a risk in speculating about members of another species?

Even supposing that the elephants were our equals in intelligence, their life differs from ours so fundamentally that trying to infer their perspective from our own experience is bound to miss the mark in many ways. For one thing, as a rule elephants have poor vision - but their sense of smell is exquisite, revealing a whole olfactory landscape that we are contentedly closed off to. Also, they do not fall romantically in love (that we know of; that their behavior indicates). Think how many other aspects of our lives are profoundly influenced by good sight and deep eros, and ask yourself what might loom equally large in an elephant's world that we ourselves would have very little grasp of. And of course there are a variety of other differences - where they live, how they live, the fact that from birth to death a female (unless something has gone wrong) will never be alone and after a certain point a male mostly will. How might these things shape a psyche?

Sure - Why Not Put Them In Charge of Europe?

Basket-case Greece is now in charge of the EU. And so of course Greece is banning democracy for 18 hours to kick-off their presidency.

Seven Movies That Changed People's Political Views

But it's a list compiled by Slate so all of the movies mentioned shifted peoples' views towards the left (if they had an effect). And note that nearly all of them were fundamentally dishonest and manipulative with the issue in question.

The Woman Who Eats Her Mattress After Sex

Coming this season on "My Strange Addiction".

What comes after sex? According to a woman named Jennifer (who doesn't use her last name,) eating a piece of the mattress is next. On "My Strange Addition," the bizarre craving of mattress eating is highlighted. According to Seven News on Friday, the latest addition highlighted on the show has the women's family concerned as eating a mattress isn't normal.

The mattress eating woman, prefers the top, shorter section of the bed and by the time she gets down to the springs she needs to purchase another to start again. If that wasn't bizarre enough, her confession of needed to eat some of the mattress after sex to feel satisfied certainly will catch the attention of the viewers.

14 Interesting variation of a socialism experiment: The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama’s plan”.. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A…. (substituting grades for dollars – something closer to home and more readily understood by all). After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. http://tinyurl.com/kbat4aw

40 This cold reminds me of a patrol we did one winter in the far north Atlantic. The water temperature was high 20s and my rack just happened to be on the far outboard right up against the hull. A few inches of steel and an inch of foam was the only thing between me and cold water for two and a half months. It was so cold in the boat that the hottest spot in the engine room that was normally about 130 was only 80 degrees. And we couldn't shut down the ac system because that was for equipment. I woke up early before every watch to go to the only warm spot in the boat to warm up like a lizard on a rock. But we didn't have Iraqis shooting at us like some in other branches did so I guess it wasn't so bad.

41

1) Christie denounces his "republican" staff and distances himself.

2) Christie wonders out loud what happened to his "republican" party and people who call themselves republicans if such people are willing to "close bridges and hurt people".

3) Christie declares himself an "independent" because HIS OWN STAFF proves "republicans" are just crazy now-a-days.

4) Media laps it all up, destroys his staffs, absolves Christie as an unwitting dupe of the "republican machine".

5) Media absolves Christie just in time to promote him, against conservative wishes, as the best hope (once again) to defeat a pre-ordained H.Clinton.

6) Christie becomes Jon McCain, the media darling.

7) Republicans nominate someone other than Christie who Christie and media destroy.

H.Clinton - 2016.

62 Fresh water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), but seawater freezes at about -1.9 degrees Celsius (28.4 degrees Fahrenheit) because of the salt in it. When seawater freezes, however, the ice contains very little salt because only the water part freezes. It can be melted down to use as drinking water.

True story -- my dad used to sort of half-rhythmically chant to himself and we always thought it was an odd affectation.....but then my mom got him Marty Robbins' "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" and we realized, to our shock, that he had been attempting to sing many of the songs on that album. The meter was so butchered as to be unrecognizable, and he had no sense of pitch -- but the lyrics matched, even through the choruses!

Dr. Drew was freaking out, yelling at the guy to go to the ER immediately; Adam Carolla was cracking hysterical jokes and asking the guy inane questions and keeping him on the line.

Yeah, how about you put yourself some basic genetics knowledge, grandma? No, wait, you're right; it's not like any genetic trait ever skips a generation or anything. That's just crazy talk!

280 206 Colorado Alex,

Some University had a study out saying that there was a ~12-15% increase IIRC based on hormonal interactions in successive male pregnancies.

BuzzFeed's story has basis in something I read on one of the web MD type sites or scientific american maybe...

Here's the article from SA that explains the research arc...

http://tinyurl.com/2vggfyy

The study goes back to 1996, initial hypothesis was the presence of male siblings(step, half or full) causes the increase, they found genetic correlation but no evidence of mere social.

The numbers being thrown around were a little less IIRC, but the idea initially seemed to be a big statistical survey type activity.

My reservation and snark is based on drawing or asserting %s of incidence in a sample size 1/33d my hometown....

Here is a 2006 article from NBC same team...

http://tinyurl.com/ltk446x

But, he added, this needs to be looked at in context of the overall rate of homosexuality in men, which he suggested is about 3 percent. With several older brothers the rate may increase from 3 percent to 5 percent, he said, but that still means 95 percent of men with several older brothers are heterosexual.

I recalled this story on one of my layovers up north, it must have been right before this.

I based the 12-15% on the lower overall rate of incidence they cited in 2006.

It looks like they are asserting they have found the increased order of probability and are not stating an upper range limit in the most recent reports is why I got leery.

I have no problem believing the crux of the hypothesis as reported males are in a different and more active in some ways gestation early on.

What rankles me is the presentation of the data, and reports not stressing when aired the relatively small sample size.

The asserted impact of the pregnancies was less in the prior reporting.

Happy hunting.

Thanks for the clarification!

I've never bought into the notion that homosexuality is exclusively a genetic thing.  In fact, I don't even think the causes are the same between men and women.  Sure, some people are "born that way", but I think that a significant portion, or even the majority, engage in homosexual behavior due to factors other than a "gay gene".

348 I think I had asked for prayers for my English brother-in-law. He went for his group medical evaluation yesterday. He has a cancerous growth under his tongue but has to have six months of chemo and radiation. They said "it's curable." I put him on every prayer list I could think of, including calling the minister in the town where they live. It's odd, he's the one who had some of religious background about 60 years ago as a kid and he made it sound-without actually saying it-, Welll, it's nice but you don't need to pray because the doctors will take care of it, while my sister (who has never attended any church in her life except when I'm doing the Christmas Eve services and they're here) reacted a little differebtly. She's as Agnostic and not the one with cancer and she said "Thanks for doing all the 'God" stuff for us. We love you." I don't think cancer is ever that easy of uncomplicated so I would be grateful for prayers too and from the Christians here- that they come to faith. I think things are better when one has Christ to lean on: "Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Thanks, I was not angry...I have a good memory but it is eroding...

When I was younger I would have recalled a year more quickly and where the study was from...

I had to do two searches.  I am slipping.  Feels like the end of 2001...

my mind is going DAVE....

The things that amuses me, and the bemusement is not directed at the gay community itself, is the breathless nature and agenda behind the way this dataset is being slung around.

I am not certain the homosexual activist community will enjoy it, when building on this research scientists isolate the antibody in play and experiment on suppression.

I am almost certain they will raise hell when gene splicing and massaging allow you to pick your child's sexual orientation.

Science is seldom pure good, or pure evil and in honesty its morality is in how other scientists use legacy datasets and analysis and how engineers and doctors use the results.

Well if he did ever decide to sell it I might be inclined. Its the one I refinished in fiesta red for a friend. Its had a little bit of a rough life, its been refinished at least 3 times, and had a few small mods so it would be somewhat cheap considering. It plays and sounds killer, but not being that much of a strat dude the timing would have to be right. In other words there better not be anything in my sights at the time he decides to sell it. The guitar has a very very fucked up history. The dude who has it now got it from a some crazy bastard who actually was up in a tree fapping in the middle of winter, and fell out of the tree and died by freezing to death.

A guitar like that would give the stash the fucking cooties. I would say its tainted on a hysterical insane level.

People have imbued the greatest mass murderers with some imagined genetic superiority or superior intellect that is in all likelihood lacking.

Stalin was malformed in span man of slightly above average intellect, bearing good reading ability with a highly analytic for patterning mind.  Had he stayed on at divinity school I could easily see him as having been happy as a librarian.  A great manager, but not someone who could engage in new engineering.

Hitler was a below average in physical stature, slightly above average in potential intellect of an artistic bent with some organizational skills lacking in Stalin's pattern seeking mind.  He had an above average instinctive grasp of group dynamic psychology.  It is easy to wonder whether the world would even know of him had he either made it in art, or stayed in the Wehrmacht.

My point is that unquiet minds in slightly below average to above average bodies coupled with 115-130 IQs have raised plenty of hell. 420 Wow. http://tinyurl.com/lvbqjdb SpaceXÂ’s Raptor engine is designed to generate more than 661,000 pounds of thrust in a vacuum, Shanklin said. Their current Merlin 1D is about 150,000 pounds of thrust. I think Raptor is intended as an upper stage engine, but if they were to put nine of them on the first stage, they would be approaching Saturn V territory. Wow.

He is older than she is by about 12 years. The day after she graduated from high school she flew down to Australia to go to university there and they lived together.. My mother was horrified they were living together and my sister went so far away, but my sister made me laugh because she said, "It's actually a good thing we were living together, because it was so difficult in the beginning if we had been married we would have gotten divorced." My sister generally keeps her emotions inside and gives the impression of being kind of unflappable so this, I expect, will not be an easy thing for her even if they do think t's curable.

Skynet doesn't have to build itself, and in all honesty why *would* we build it?

I think the temptation for Tailor Babies will outweigh wanting an Eniac that can talk to you and eclipse your entire possible "spatial" knowledge potential in milliseconds.

We're a proud species, perhaps overly proud.  I don't think we will make that leap as lightly as some do.

The thing is who isn't a proud papa, and who would not want LITERALLY the best "treatment" for your baby money can buy?

I look hard at plastic surgery addiction, parents buying their daughters boob job early and I shudder....

Once we decode how the brain itself is 'programed', to the point we can both input and output information.... things will get hinky. The Parallel processing capability of the human mind... its ability to find patterns, and use those same patterns to conceptualize further patterns... coupled with the perfect data retrieval of a computer??? mind expanding... Now.... add in the ability to directly control computers... the Web.... online banking... and an amoral mind.... Crash city... Hell.... that would make a great book.... LOL...

I missed this ONT, the last one I saw was Chemjeff's emergency ONT. I watched an old Sopranos episode on demand & ordered a new sweatshirt jacket from LL Bean.  I am sick of Eddie Bauer's jackets falling apart, zippers coming out in the dryer.

Someone else agreed with me that EB is as bad as Old Navy in the past few weeks.  My older brother ordered on from LLB and came up here to show me that it is of much higher quality than EB and it was on sale.

Good Morning.  I'm working from home today.

I was going to yesterday but had to take a nap for a while, It ended up being a four hour nap & then took another long one.

I'm using Windows 7 computer which means I have no ampersands!

I  haven't been on this site with a Windows computer in almost two years.  The formatting buttons I see here do not work.

I do not see them on Mac, but what difference does it make if they do not work.

My late uncle retired as a "Pentagon Colonel." The Army bought him a PhD from Columbia, among other things. He was a Gideon, despite that, and a Baptist missionary. And it was from him that I first head the line "Optimists study Russian." Almost 50 years ago, too.

I recall debunking a college lecture about the Fat'n'Happy Fifties by telling how my family spent the decade cringing. Aside from the depression coming back, many expected a land war in Asia any minute. And somebody actually asked, "What made you fear that?" This asked, you'll note, before the fall of Saigon.

Because we'd just had two, you silly fuck, was not considered a polite answer.
