So the WaPo spins and spins and makes even damning criticism of Obama yet more proof of The One's daring awesomeness.
The US Patent and Trademark Office: The Term "Redskins" Is Offensive
So they've rejected a trademark application for 'Redskins Hog Rind'.
The heated debate over the Washington Redskins name has now moved beyond living rooms and corporate offices to the U.S. government itself, with one agency making an unequivocal ruling that the term "Redskins" is offensive slang.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected an application to trademark the name "Redskins Hog Rind," writing that the term "Redskins" is "a derogatory slang term that refers to, and is considered offensive by, American Indians."
Apparently there is precedent for this but the football team seems safe. For now.
To determine what crosses the line, the agency looks at two questions: 1) the term's likely meaning and use in the product's context and 2) whether the phrase disparages a specific group of people. Thus, many words have been approved in some circumstances and rejected in others.
The term "squaw," for example, was ruled offensive when used for clothing and general retail but was approved for use with skiing equipment associated with "Squaw Valley." And the PTO rejected the use of "Khoran" for a brand of alcohol, something that the Islamic holy book, the Quran, considers sinful. Actor Damon Wayans' application for a clothing line called "Nigga" was rejected, as have been several applications to use even the phrase "the N word." But a group protesting the phrase was allowed to trademark "Abolish the 'N' word."
Likewise, the agency has permitted the term "redskin" when applied to potatoes or when directly applied to the football team, as in "The Redskins Broadcast Network."
Still why is a federal agency in charge of administering trademarks worrying about whether they might be offensive to some people?
Carolyn McCarthy (D, NY-04) Is Retiring
She's best known for trying to ban guns and other stuff that she has no clue about. Do you know how many children were killed by barrel shrouds last year? Well a lot...probably. And that's more than enough reason to ban'em whatever they are.
Peaceniks: The American Presence is Causing the Violence in Iraq
The real world: Nope.
It's been two years since Americans troops departed Iraq and the nation is still burning. The yearly death toll has been calculated and it's nothing short of horrifying. In total, 7,818 civilians and 1,050 members of the security forces lost their lives in 2013, making it the most violent in five years....Removing American soldiers from the equation did nothing to reduce violence. To the contrary, the infusion of troops during the surge was what brought violence down to manageable levels. Since leaving, those numbers have crept up again.
...No single concept animated the anti-Iraq War movement more than the assumption that our presence is what made Iraq a hostile place. This assumption framed the entire debate. Those who wanted to beat a hasty retreat counted themselves as peaceniks while portraying their opponents as war-mongers. They seemed incapable of understanding that we all wanted peace. Simply leaving however, was no guarantee that peace would automatically bloom across Iraq.
The conventional wisdom concerning the insurgency in Iraq was that it would dry up as soon as our troops left. The insurgents were, after all, merely fighting to evict foreign occupiers from their homeland.
Why it's like those strange foreigner-types have free will and their own agendas or something.

And Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y is an idiot. Perhaps we can do a trade with Russia.
If there's one thing RadFems hate as much or more than men, it's she-men. And they can get all litigious about it.
>How crazy did that conflict become? At one point in April, the venue tried to cancel the event after discovering that "certain language was used and some statements were made about transgender people that would go against our equalities and diversity policy." Another RadFem conference organizer, Cathy Brennan of Baltimore, was meanwhile all over Twitter announcing "transwomen are men" and comparing them to MRAs (men's rights advocates). Brennan's outspoken hostility to transgenders led her to take legal action against a transgender activist...The Competitive Victimhood Derby is ultimately a zero-sum game, you see. There can only be one winner, and the transgender claim to equal victimhood is rejected by radical feminists, who view this as an attempt to usurp their own categorical claim.
It's like a traffic jam on the Crazyville Road, where two politicized groups of wackjobs are compelled by the implicit logic of their arguments to fight each other for supremacy.

According to police Denver Lee St. Clair, 58, of McLoud, OK died from asphyxiation, trauma to head, and shame at the hands of his 33 year old step-son.
Authorities have arrested a man in the bizarre killing of his stepfather, who was found with his own underwear stretched around his head and neck. The stepson called it an "atomic wedgie."
Brad Davis, 33, of McLoud, was arrested on a murder complaint Tuesday evening in the death of Denver Lee St. Clair, 58. St. Clair was the husband of Tressia St. Clair, Davis' mother.

So sorry to hear that. But, in regards to Alzheimers and politics, I have heard several warnings related from people who had placed elderly family members in care facilities because of advancing dementia, only to learn later that votes had been being cast on behalf of those persons.
Local Democratic machines actually will pay off staff at these care facilities to have all the residents "sign" pre-filled absentee ballots. It's an easier racket than the graveyard vote.
No circle of Hell sufficiently hot.

Our Planet could get crisped by a gamma ray burst and lose 95% of life and the one reporter extant's words will be: "Obama did not fail on preparing for reality, REALITY failed to prepare for Obama"
It's just who they are, I think we can all agree I am no fan of Christie but the media pissed me off today...
I guess when I went into that phone booth the flash of light means it is a time machine and it is 2001-2009 and Bush got WAY FAT?
Yeah media you're living up to precisely what Tapper and I fought about the morning after Benghazi when the talking point was: "damn that Mitt Romney for forcing us to attack him and ignore Benghazi"
Tapper alleged at me "you want us to leave you guys alone and for us to work for you I call it down the middle" and I told him "No Jake I want you to be able to pretend that Obama is George Bush for 45 minutes a day, work for the American people and attack us both" then added "you know like a journalist"
He almost banned me, then cooled down and conceded they could do better.
That's when I knew he is not who the right thinks he is, but he is still better than his peers.

I've seen about a dozen Science Fiction short stories and novels that were really just lesbian fantasy exercises in which female couples are able to produce daughters with no male involvement of any kind. The first one may have been in one of the Dangerous Visions anthologies but I couldn't identify it from the Wiki pages. The most recent one I came across was Ammonite by Nicola Griffith. It got really dull early on and only skimmed the remainder to see if it went the way I suspected it would. I guess you really have to be taken with the concept to find the story engaging.

You absolutely do not want multiple routers on the same WAN connection. The second device may have router functionality but has it turned off and is solely acting to supplement the wireless signal range. You can also get dedicated devices for this purpose but due to the way the numbers work it is often cheaper to buy the full function device and just have protions of it turned off in the firmware.

If the surveillance camera is on the premises it shouldn't need to use the broadband link for local access by a computer on the same network. The connection to the outside world would only come into it if you to see what the camera was picking up while you away from home. Your local network should be good for several dozen megabits per second throughput, depending on the quality of your wire or the amount of local use of the WiFi spectrum.

BTW, the reason your router is named N600 is because, under optimal conditions, it'll move 600Mbps. So you'd have 200x the capacity inside your home (computer <-> computer; computer <-> TV; camera <-> dvr; etc.) as the 1.5 Mbps you have to the internet.

For all the improvements they've made over the years, DSL is still severely bound by distance from the CO/RT. I have a long list of clients who would upgrade in a moment if anything better was offered. Larry Niven is in a neighborhood where everything is well into the seven digit price range but no cable service is offered at all. The residence density is far too low for any cable company to make any money unless everybody maxes out on the services offered. The PUC won't allow a special rate to be charged despite everybody in the neighborhood being well able to afford a premium if somebody would just run some fiber into the location.
Last I checked, Niven was still just getting 1.5 on a line that is supposed to do 3. I know some people who only get 768 Kbps and even a few who are getting what is effectively ISDN.

Reason I was asking is that both your chance of being laid off and your strategies for finding a new position are all about the market. It seems to me that cost estimation is a fundamental business skill -- it is, for instance, the entire basis of being a construction contractor.....that is to say, to bid a fixed price for a job, you have to have some faint clue about what it's going to cost. But various subspecies of this have odd work rules and tribal behaviors. As an example, I was once the Controller of a company that made wafer-handling robots for the semiconductor industry, and when our lease ran out at our old buildings, our new production line was in a class 100,000 cleanroom. This had nothing to do with making the robots work better or serve the customers' needs better -- it was about being part of "the club" of cleanroom users.

Someone in the earlier thread linked to a MST3000 episode featuring some crappy 1985 sci-fi film. So I watched it. It was a nice break from politics circa 2014. But the best MST3000 episodes are always based on '50's sci-fi.
I also watched the MST3000 crew making fun of some 1950's educational film called "Are You Ready For Marriage?" Sorry, but their snark was not terribly funny, because the film, although horribly acted, made very sensible points. When I compare today's divorce rates with the '50's, I don't think we're in any position to make fun of those backward '50's people.

He profound but never pretentious. Straightforward and simple. He could be a common man because he had a great God.
Nelson is sophomoric by comparison. He preens and postures. He is too proud to let go. And when he expresses feeeeeelings, he lays on too much sugar and cheap sentiment, thinking that it is passion.
I DON'T detest Nelson, BTW. I think he is a much better tunesmith than Cash, though an inferior performer.
Anyway, I see Nelson as more liberal in temperament and Cash as more conservative.
Posted by: Margarita DeVille at January 10, 2014 12:56 AM
I'm not sure that I'd say that Nelson is a better tunesmith. WN might have a stronger grasp, technically, but, that doesn't always mean "better". JC was a much better tunesmith than he is sometimes given credit for. He had a peculiar, original style. The thing with his tunes is made solid gold out of simple stuff. Cash was a very strong hook writer, much better than WN. They were simple bits, but, what he did with them, few others could emulate that weren't big wheels in pop or rock. JC managed to straddle country, pop and rock with catchy, though basic melodies and killer hooks. Also, a very nice guy with a major presence. With WN, it was "oh, willie nelson. cool." With JC it was "holy fucking shit. It's johnny fucking cash!"...

If it weren't pitch dark I could send a pic -- there's a wall between us and our back neighbors (he was an amateur mason back in the day) that is creeping fig, then he had some sheds against the wall and people could hop from the street to the shed's roofs and into our yard -- so it got the blackberries. And there's some overlap.
Mechanically, I've got pressure-treated 2x4s that "lean" from the top of the wall to the sidewalk 18" away. Running in parallel to the wall, I've got clothesline attached to the 2x4s every two feet. During the blackberry's growing season, I tuck new shoots behind the clothesline, the fig stays on the wall. Blackberry canes grow in year one, have fruit in year two, and need to be cut off for year 3, so they can coexist.

We have some around some windows. Pretty berries, but thorns you would not believe. I wear a sweater, covered by a canvas jacket, and long sleeved leather gloves when I am pruning. The thorns are like needles, and are several inches long.

I went to school in Santa Barbara. Natal Plum (Carissa macrocarpa) is a beautiful hedge plant with nice flowers and edible fruit....and makes pyracantha look like marigolds when it comes to bloodthirsty. Unfortunately, they are extremely limited in where you can grow them -- they don't like frost much. It's like a balls-to-the-wall cactus with leaves for camouflage.

Quite a lot of the songs Johnny recorded weren't written by him, and his band was responsible for a lot of the hooks and phrases. But what Johnny Cash had was that he was a working man, and he worked. There is a particularly beautiful example of this that is part of the backstory to his daughter, Rosanne Cash's album "The List". It seems that she had been touring around with him and showed some desire to advance within "the family business", so Johnny gave her a gift with value beyond measure.
He thought long and hard, and came up with a list of 100 songs to hear and to study, and told her that thorough knowledge of those 100 songs would put her in "the family business" better than blood. "The List" discloses 12 of them, which she covers on the album. The other 88 are still unknown.

I had an odd conversation today at my local Harbor Freight. They're gearing up for a big 3-day tent sale in their parking lot starting tomorrow.
Now, for no real reason at all, I had figured that there was a Harbor Freight Sale Crew that drove around the country and just staged Harbor Freight tent sales and HF sidewalk sales. I'd wondered how many of these caravans there might be.
My source today told me that they rent the tents, but that there's a HF sale this weekend everywhere there is a HF. I don't know about everyone else, but I boggled at thinking of the big-ass warehouse needed to stage that.

I never bought one plant, but the neighbors have plenty. I assume the birds are eating the berries and "scattering" the seeds.

It wasn't the tent that had me wondering, it was the buttload of inventory. It made so much sense to me that they'd do all this blowout stuff in one location, then move it on down the road and restock. But, nooooooooo.....there are blowout sales a few times a year, and all the tents are filled on the same day.

I don't actually know who they share space with, but I do know they do, and there's more than one warehouse, and there is the ability to stock a considerable amount, as well as increasing stock at the store before the sale. Sometimes stores will add a shipping container or two behind the store with stock for a big sale.
It's sort of like the dozens of huge online car parts retailers - many of them not only share warehouse networks, but the back-end software for the site.

BIL used to work for HF writing ad copy, so I'm glancingly familiar....and they don't share nada with bupkis. All their stuff is private-branded -- note this chart http://www.littlemachineshop.com/Info/minimill_compare.php -- and cannot be purchased anywhere else with the same name, specs, and color scheme -- but if you know what you're getting, you can ofttimes get it really cheap.

That's good to know, thanks. I need a new cheap sander, so I'll run by tomorrow.
With 500 stores, I'd bet they have multiple warehouses/distrubution centers. I ran retail stores for 20 years. From a marketing standpoint, it's much more efficient to adveritse for multiple locations at the same time. I know there are at least 3 HF stores within 20 miles or so of me - maybe more? One ad for one price covers them all.
Posted by: shredded chi - broke, busted & disgusted at January 10, 2014 03:01 AM (UUSGT)
Just know what you're doing.....for a cheap sander that you use a couple of times a year, HF is fine. And when it breaks, it's cheap enough to be disposable.
OTOH, some of their industrial gear is a private-branded version of the real deal, and is worthy of investment.
But, then, they have other things that you'll be lucky to successfully use once.
If I were a carpenter and used my circular saw multiple times per day for a living, I would absolutely not buy it from HF. OTOH, I have a ton of their stuff.
