Overnight Open Thread (10 Jan 2014)
— CDR M

While the media has wall to wall coverage of 'Bridgegate', here are 24 underreported Democratic scandals. Free press? Never heard of it. Lessons Learned From Comet ISON

10 lessons from the "Comet of the Century". Now while ISON was a failure for backyard viewing, we still have things to look forward to this year.

On May 24 of this year, Earth will pass through the trail of Comet 209P/LINEAR, possibly producing a spectacular meteor shower. In August, the Rosetta spacecraft will rendezvous with Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, and then (all going well) drop a lander onto its surface in November. Just before that, on October 19, Comet Siding Springs will squeak 110,000 kilometers from Mars. The comet will pass so close that its coma (glowing envelope) will enshroud the planet and perhaps noticeably alter its atmosphere. Every spacecraft on and around Mars, including NASAÂ’s upcoming MAVEN probe, will be watching.

Green Lies

Not surprising as tax data casts doubt on claims about declining use of plastic bags in D.C.

I didn't know this was a thing. World Air Sex championships hits Britain. Yes, it started in Japan.

It was my only chance to see the most famous comet of all, and I drew the short straw, historically speaking. So I determined to make the best of it. Also, I was young at the time. 83 My favorite result of the dumb math had to be a couple months ago. Every kid in my son's 6th grade math class failed their math test, which was entirely online. When the teacher looked into it she discovered the kids were getting marked wrong for answers like "24 apples" because the computer test only wanted numbers. But after years and years of being berated into answering math problems with complete sentences "tommy had 24 apples left" that is what the kids were typing.

The coroner issued a death certificate!!!  My dad was saying the other day something about insurance.  I'm like, Daddy, there's a death certificate, insurance is out the fuckin' window.  I feel really, really bad for this family, but they are just ineffably stupid here.  It's really heart-wrenching and I kinda get their feelings but there is simply nothing to support it.  Super sad all around.

105 Yesterday my son handed me this piece of paper with an irrregular shape on it and said "find the area of this mom" so, I made a photocopy of it, cut the shape, and pasted it back together because it obviously made a normal shape if pieced together. Then I pasted it back on the graph paper, counted the squares, multiplied the two sides and voila the area of an irregular shape. I may have failed geometry in junior high school but I rock at Tetris! Posted by: Paranoidgirlinseattle at January 10, 2014 10:13 PM (RZ8pf) Alternatively, you cut out the shape and weigh it. Then weigh out pieces of paper with a known area from the same page, and then compare.

125 Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo had a test flight today: http://tinyurl.com/koctehx They'll have progressively higher test flights until the point at which they take paying customers to an altitude of 100 km (62 miles), which is about as high as the X-15 flew in the 1950s and 60s. The price of a ticket is $250,000, which is way out of my price range, but that doesn't bother me a bit. If millionaires and celebrities want to volunteer themselves as guinea pigs for beta testing of a brand new spaceplane, then have at it. The more the demand increases, the faster the price will drop, until eventually ordinary people will be able to afford it. Fifty years ago, only the top Air Force test pilots were able to have an experience like this. Now we're approaching the point where people can buy a ticket and ride along as passengers. I definitely consider that progress.

Catholics consider "extraordinary/ordinary" (now proportionate/disproportionate") based in part on a burden/benefit analysis. Hence in the Cruzan case, the church testified it was acceptable to remove the feeding tube. granted it's complicated. Directive 56 (or is it 57 I always forget) in the ERDs leave it to the patient to weight the burdens and benefits.

Granted the program that I'm in was formed by Kevin O'Rourke, so perhaps there's some bias there. He actually testified at the Cruzan trail (one of them.) I know there are some holdouts on the feeding tube issues (the late Fr. Kavanaugh most notably.) But I don't think anyone declares it always mandatory. The JP2 papal allocution was, oddly conflicted (and in contrast with his previous statements on the matter.) As for the McMath case, the church certainly accepts neurological brain death criteria.

188 yeah that is the new thing in math education: if you can relate math to your life then you'll be better at it, or something --- I don't know about this specific case, but I don't object to that approach at all. In fact, I wish more subject areas would do a "Connections" type of approach to their curriculum delivery. Just yesterday some gal on Twitter said "another day of not using algebra" -- but I doubt that's true. People do use algebraic concepts, they just may not realize it.

Here's that Common Core math question that may literally (not even just Biden "literally") be the stupidest math question ever:

"Juanita wants to give bags of stickers to her friends.
She wants to give the same number of stickers to each friend.
She's not sure if she needs 4 bags or 6 bags of stickers.
How many could she buy so that there are no stickers left over?"

Zero. They all get an equal number of bags and there are none left over. The answer is fuck 'em, let them buy their own stickers.

211 "Common Core" is kind of like the "New Math" of our day. Many of the root techniques and such do actually make sense if they are taught properly. I remember how people joked about "new math." I didn't bother finding out what it was until much later in life, and it turns out that that is how I was taught, though thankfully taught properly by people who knew what they were doing. "Common Core" is not just the root techniques, but the entire failed implementation. The three main problems are: 1). The lesson scripts are written by people who don't know what the f**k they are doing. 2). The teachers go through the scripts not understanding them, or needing to. 3). IT is used as an excuse to implement a bunch of new materials with little oversight or time to go over the material, which allows leftist education groups to push pure propaganda like this: http://tinyurl.com/lta4d7w

I think it may have something to do with injecting social justice/ideology into a subject where it doesn't belong.

Two years ago my son came home with a weekly reading handout (read aloud once each night, answer provided questions about it after reading) about - get this - a latina girl overhearing a conversation at the grocery store about not buying grapes because of Ceasar Chavez. I vaguely recall the grape boycott during the 70's, certainly not worth mentioning to a 3rd grader in 2012, but that's their agenda: add social justice themes/interpretations to everything.

Thankfully I learned to read on my own so I wasn't subjected too much to it from the reading angle, but it fucked up my spelling something royally. It took years and years to undo that mess. Basically our spelling tests were to write down an entire paragraph with the weeks' words interspersed. You got credit for what % of the words you spelled correctly, regardless of if any of them were actually on the spelling list. So you could get 80% while missing every single spelling word. Stupid, stupid, stupid, but progressive!

287 President Obama, announcing his so-called “economic promise zone” initiative in a White House speech on Thursday, gave a performance that expressed the cynical and contemptuous attitude of his administration and the entire ruling class to the plight of working people in America.

The event was staged as part of the administration’s supposed campaign against inequality, whose entire substance, besides the “promise zones,” consists of a call to restore long-term unemployment benefits and enact a small increase in the minimum wage.

Speaking in the midst of the deepest economic crisis since the Great Depression, with the poverty rate rising and social inequality at historic levels, Obama made no attempt to present an objective picture of the social crisis in America. He offered no statistics on poverty, unemployment, hunger or the vast chasm separating the financial elite from the rest of the population. Nor did he attempt to explain why the social crisis had worsened during his tenure.

I had no idea. The movie was heavy on oppressed immigrant laborers vs. greedy white farm-owners. Here's an excerpt from a movie review that goes far in explaining the storyline and reason for the movie:

"Like Mandela and Barack Obama, Chávez was a community organizer. He was a pioneer in linking the organized labor and environmental movements when he educated the public about the toxic pesticides on consumer crops. He recognized the chemicals injured not only farmworkers, but also consumers and people living near sprayed fields.

He became the leader of the United Farm Workers union, which he co-founded with another leader with Arizona ties, Dolores Huerta. Huerta famously coined the phrase “¡si, se puede!” (“yes, we can!”)"

334 Evening

This made my night:

"Liam Neeson Lambasts Calls to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages"

"'TheyÂ’ll die, you know, darlin,Â’ ” Liam, who at 6-foot-4 can pretty much look the 6-foot-5 mayor in the eye, told me in his gorgeous Northern Irish brogue...

“It’s criminal!’’ cried Liam. “This is an iconic, historic part of New York.

“The horses are incredibly well-treated. They’re regulated up the wazoo. They get five weeks’ holiday every year.’’ (How many people get that much down time?) “Tourists love them.” ...

He speculated that efforts to ban the carriage trade resulted from a land grab by greedy developers eager to get hold of horse stables on ManhattanÂ’s West Side:

“I think it’s about real estate. I’m not the kind of person to use my celebrity’’ to promote causes, he said. But, “the horses are happy.”

I love that Neeson calls out other celebs as "ill-informed" and I love that he's exposing what he thinks is the REAL reason behind this: real estate. Love that he doesn't take what politicians say at face value.

As an old-time San Franciscan who remembers the era of it being uncultured and taboo to refer to the place as "Frisco", I must sadly inform you that there's no one left to take offense.

Half of San Francisco now is East Coast transplants (mainly the entitled arrogant asshole strain of New Yorker) and the other half is Chinese (mainly the rude queue-jumping sidewalk-spitting mainlander sort).

They wouldn't know that it was not ever not done to use the offending contraction.

Similarly, a few weeks ago, in San Francisco proper, I referred to Emperor Norton and Herb Caen, and the four other people I was talking to all stared at me and said, "Who?" Completely baffled at the mention of two central figures in city history.

347 I would like to moron-source an opportunity that fell in my lap today, if I may. (This place has the highest concentration of geniuses in the entire Internet.) Today, one of the biology instructors asked if I would analyze a population growth formula that she thinks is unnecessarily complex. I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know what all it entails. I do know that she believes that an exponential growth formula correctly models population growth and she seems to be interested in teaching alarmism. She is very concerned that the US growth rate is highest among developed nations, on par with many third world countries. Again, I don't have necessary details yet. She kept quoting numbers that I didn't recognize as birth or growth rates (something like 0.8 for Europe and 0.5 for US). Anyway, most population growth has an exponential period, but then tapers off again due to limiting factors. So I hope to perhaps temper her alarmism. She may not follow through after she learned that I think babies are a good thing, though!

Not only Europe and East Asia, even many Latin American countries are way below replacement rate. Even Mexico (which used to be 7), has dropped to below 3 and is still falling quite fast. Even many Middle Eastern countries are facing a demographic death spiral, including Iran and Turkey. We ended up with a 3-week Christmas break.  They go back Monday.  We took off yesterday for the Wisconsin Dells.  Found a hotel with an indoor water park / mini-amusement park.  Kids were so tired today they could barely walk back to the room.

Life is beautiful.  At least for now.

As in many cases it does.

Almost as though the US were importing a tidal wave of Third World immigrants. Funny how that works.

440 "Jean is shorter than Brutus but taller than Imhotep. Imhotep is taller than Jean, but shorter than Lord Scotland. Lord Scotland is twice the height of Jean and Brutus combined but only one-tenth of the height of Millsy. Millsy is at a constant height of X - Y. If Jean stands exactly one nautical mile away from Lord Scotland, how tall is Imhotep? Posted by: Imhotep"

The correct answer: Refer to column B on the mortar fire solution table and adjust one mil per mile - then adjust fire as necessary.  After three rounds, no one will care how tall Imhotep was.

She called me, on her way to her seat while they were sealing the door, panting from running, to let me know she had made it.....and they lost her luggage.

If you lived in LA, all of the TV people in 'Volcano' were familiar faces. There was one long-time KTLA guy who appeared in movie almost every year since KTLA started broadcasting, up until he retired in his eighties.

Despite the general impossibility, I can never pass up watching the last parts of that movie. I love the ending shot of 'Mt. Wilshire' as Randy Newman's 'I Love LA' kicks in. Hate the stupid race subplot, and the guy you know is going to die within a minute of being introduced because he is a smoker and gives Anne Heche a hard time. In the theater, I leaned over to my friend and said, "That guy dies, I guarantee it."

Dante's Peak had it's own problems. The Charles Halloran character was another guy you knew was a goner within a minute of being introduced. (But then, Charles Halloran characters tend to die a lot.) The mish mash of effects associated with volcanic activity were absurdly varied for a single event in a single location. And the final shot depicts Pierce Brosnan as having fully recovered from his grievous injuries. You'd think he'd lose that arm or much of the use of it, if he didn't bleed out from the compound fracture that went untreated for a considerable amount of time.

They shot a LOT in and around Thousand Oaks back then. I've mentioned before how my siblings and I were going nuts watching the second episode, after the initial set of TV movies, in IIRC 1974, where Steve Austin was running across a minefield to reach a weird looking building that was the then Thousand Oaks Civic Center. Also the home of Proteus IV in 'Demon Seed.'

They gave up on the building when an ADA survey indicated it would be nearly impossible to make the place compliant without spending more than it was worth, along with the increasing need for more office space as the city grew.

How about waivers as a way of relieving favored groups from the hammer of socialist whompin'? How about the massive stonewalling?

Washington Post, sorry.

Niagara Falls typically gets icy, and the ice gives the illusion that it has frozen solid. I'm still trying to wrap my head around some places, largely because my feet get extremely itchy when I think about all the bonded indebtedness that I'm supposed to pay off by virtue of living here with shit I never wanted. As an example, I give you the 49ers stadium. The local politicians indebted me to the tune of $4,000 to make it happen -- the BH for another $4K. I'd rather live in NC's climate than make a single payment toward that debt.

So, there's a little background to this -- my parents had five degrees between them. My dad retired as the #3 engineer for the City of Los Angeles, and my mom was a professor of Mathematics.

Anyway, during my youth, my mom was a full-time professor, while my dad also taught clases as a lecturer. Since my mom was on the tenure track, she found herself on the textbook committee....so we ended up with buttloads of college textbooks in the house.

Now I could drill down in that quite a ways, but this particular story is more about top layers. Every freakin' physics text had a picture to illustrate the phases of matter, and 90% of them used a snowflake. The frontispiece of the "phases of matter" chapter in the textbook was almost always those damned snowflakes.

And so I grew up in dread of them. Living in SoCal, it's not like I had experience with the real thing. I had more experience with shuri-ken from the Kung-Fu series than acual snowfall.

So I grew up believing that snowflakes were large, sharpe-edged, nasty projectiles associated with slowblwow

688 Democrat Mark Sokolich may not have been the real target of “Bridgegate.” It could well have been a big, fat, Chris Christie hissy fit aimed at New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg because she blocked his state Supreme Court nominees, a new parsing of the e-mail evidence suggests. Weinberg’s district is centered in Fort Lee. Just one day before his deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly sent an e-mail to the Port Authority requesting “traffic problems in Fort Lee,” Christie was railing at a press conference about how Weinberg and other Democrats were blocking his latest state Supreme Court nominee. “I simply could not be party to the destruction of [Justice] Helen Hoen’s professional reputation,” he told reporters of his decision to withdraw his pick’s nomination in order to spare her the ordeal of being challenged.
