If the Yellowstone Caldera erupts, supposedly the U.S. has sooper sekrit contingency plans for Brazil, Australia, or Argentina. Hmmm. Not sure about Brazil or Argentina but dang, the ecosystem in Australia is killer. But the beaches are nice. I think I'd opt for Australia. A Guide To Japanese Toilets

Good Lord they have features. A Westerner's guide to Japanese toilets. They aren't cheap either.
The washlet's plethora of user settings focuses more on physics and chemistry than electronics. Toto's modern toilet bowls have a nanotech coating on the interior to defend against incidental stains and prevent waste from sticking to it long after you've flushed. The very latest models even partially electrolyze the flush water, which not only adds an antibacterial bonus to every flush, but also has a bleaching effect on urine stains. And some higher-end washlets pack proximity sensors that cause the seat to raise and lower on your approach and dismount.
Since we're talking about Japan, how about Vol. IV of weird Japanese commercials?
Obamacare
Heh. Mexicocare > Obamacare.
The growing trend among Californians finds citizens driving into Mexican towns like Tijuana, and seeing a doctor for as little as $15 out of pocket. While the Obama administration remains puzzled why so few Latinos are signing up for health insurance, the answer can be found just a few short miles away from the border.
40th Anniversary of Blazing Saddles
Mel Brooks blasts political correctness saying how Blazing Saddles couldn't be made today and most of the anniversary coverage on MSM outlets fails to mention Brooks saying that.
Star Trek
The annoying kids of Star Trek. So true. I hated Wesley.
Adventures Of The Miami Police Department
Police shooting frenzy raises concerns. I would hope so after 23 cops fired at least 377 rounds not only into the suspect vehicle but into neighboring cars, buildings, oh and 2 cops. The kicker is that the suspect and other occupant in the vehicle ended up being unarmed although the suspect was thought to be still armed after shooting another cop earlier.
Air Force

Is the U.S. Air Force dying? Well, they sure are losing the numbers game and the F-35 isn't going to help. Of course, the Army has more boats than the Navy does so there's that.
Of the three military departments, the U.S. Air Force is buying the fewest total amount of new aircraft, purchasing the fewest types of aircraft, and retiring the most airplanesSince defense budgets peaked in 2010, and continuing through the 2015 budget request, the U.S. Navy is on a path to have acquired 1,133 new aircraft while the Air Force will have bought 824. Of these planes, the Navy will acquire 264 fighters (including the EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft) to the Air ForceÂ’s 117.
Excluding Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPVs)—or drones—the Navy is on a path to have purchased 1,039 new aircraft, and the Air Force just 400 airplanes between 2010 and 2015.

I think it would be more correct to say that the F-35 was picked because it was supposed to be cheaper AND more capable than the F-22. Saying we're forced to go with the F-35 because the F-22 was cancelled is not entirely correct.

JSF, look to NavAir cancelling the A-6G and A-6F to replace the A-6E TRAM and the defunct A-12 program.
JSF, look to the 1990s Peace Dividend that shrunk the defense industry.
Hence JSF became the only game in town and thus too big to fail.

Movie sign!
Fun, creative, and hilariously dark, JohnnyExpress is a short from South Korean animation company Alfred ImageWorks that manages to pack a fantastic story into a runtime of just five minutes and twenty-six seconds.
"There are all sorts of Aliens living throughout space. Johnny is a Space Delivery Man who travels to different planets to deliver packages. Johnny is lazy and his only desire is to sleep in his autopilot spaceship. when the spaceship arrives at the destination, all he has to do is simply deliver the box.
However, it never goes as planned."

You can recognize the Mazama ash bed in the banks of the Bow River in Calgary, Alberta. It's an inch or two thick at that point, and quite conspicuous. That ash fall resulted from the explosion of Mt. Mazama, the event giving rise to modern-day Crater Lake in Oregon.
And if a massive explosion in the Yellowstone caldera made refugees out of millions of Americans, why would they not go to parts of Canada not also affected by the ash? Brazil, Argentina, Australia? The logistics of getting there would be formidable. Canada, just hop in your car and drive.

That would be the Dexter character's hot sister. For some reason alot of commenters at the original Jump The Shark hated her guts. I think it might have been due to a different show she was on earlier in her career where she played a bitch and the commenters couldn't separate the character/s from the actress. Never bothered me as an actress, character or good-looking woman.

The F-22 and the F-35 were supposed to comprise a "hi-lo" mix.
Akin to the respective roles previously performed by the F-15 and F-16. The latter being cheaper, less capable and more numerous than the former.
The "hi" end fighters of both generations were supposed to handle air superiority and first-day door-kicker jobs. The "lo" end fighters cleaned up after.
The F-35 is not a mini F-22, and was never designed or intended to be. It is vastly inferior in kinematic performance, for one thing. It's not even the equal of the F-15 in that regard (an aircraft that entered service while Gerald Ford was president).
However, the F-35 has been described to Congress as a near peer to the F-22 by Lockheed Martin, and the technical ignoramuses in Congress have bought that line of bunk.
What killed the F-22 was its perceived high cost. It was expensive. Quite expensive. And LockMart were claiming the F-35 would be cheap enough to serve as a one for one replacement for the F-16. At a time when an F-22 cost as much as four F-16s. Congress gulped.
Then after the F-22 was stone dead and the line had been shut down and disassembled, it became clear that the F-35 costs were completely out of control. Today, certain F-35 variants cost MORE than the F-22 did.
In sum: a horribly late, overbudget, oversold, undermanaged defense program. That has produced a slow, low, clumsy, draggy jet which does not have adequate stealth to survive in the modern combat air environment. And to which there is no longer any reasonable alternative.
Sometimes, I swear, Congress and the Department of Defense make me think that they must be part of the federal government or something, so utterly incompetent are they both.

TFX contract for the Air Force was won by General Dynamics. Remember them? Before the Peace Dividend they were a separate company. Now? They are part of Lock-Mart churning out the F-16 and F-35.
The TFX for USAF mission was intended to be a long range adverse weather bomber. An F-105 on steroids. That was the F-111.
McNamara decided the Navy Missileer program could be rolled into the TFX and thus he declared it so. So GD went in partnership with Grumman. Grumman to build the F-111B with an abbreviated nose, AWG-9 radar, stronger landing gear, longer wings, and missile pylons under the wings for the AIM-54 that were supposed to pivot as the pilot moved the trombone lever Forward to swing the wings backwards.
Thank God there was one honest admiral that day when Sen. Stennis asked Admiral Tom Connoly if the F-111B could be a fighter. "Senator not all the thrust in Christendom could make that a fighter." It cost Tom his career but from that wreckage arose the F-14.
What about the USAF F-111 program? F-111As and Combat Lancer deployment six planes three losses. Until one crew managed to eject they had no idea how the TFR profile were so harsh in those karst mountains the planes would break apart in flight.
F-111D with Mk II avionics. Highest abort rate of the whole fleet. They pretended to be fighter pilots by carrying in the bomb bay the M-61 Vulcan. Not many parts could interchange with other F-111 units.
F-111E -A with slightly revised avionics and vastly different cockpit layout. Also different engine than the -A
F-111F they finally got the avionics to work but nothing as complex as the -D Mk II junk. Again a different engine. And was designed to carry Pave Tack so the -F could drop smart bombs. No other -111 could do that on its own.
There was also the FB-111A and the Australian F-111C. The TFX program was supposed to equip allies like Britain, the F-111K, but due to all the problems in the program the UK backed out and the Air Force was saddled with six different planes called F-111 that in fact did not share a lot of parts in common.
Do not write off the A-6F so easily. It would have been a new airframe. It would have shared engines, the F-404, with the Hornet and have the digital bus of the F-14D. It just was not that favorite buzzword - stealthy.

The shuttle only really made any sense as a way to ferry station parts up and down. Of course, what good does the station do?
engineering and ambition wise though, it was pretty impressive. It would have been nice to build a small scale crew only one to test everything out before designing a full size one. Its why I'm rooting for the DreamChaser to become successful

Yes. Nothing could carry ordnance to distance like the A-6. Brilliant design.
Add to the list of good things above a new composite wing.
I do wonder whether Grumman could have competently executed the program. Especially since they were simultaneously pitching a complete overhaul of both the F-14 and the A-6. By the late 1980s, they were a hell of a mess internally. Years of disorganized, defocused management (building _buses_, really?). Running out of cash. Basically requiring recapitalization and firing two thirds of the executive team.
But, all moot now. With the end of the A-6 and the cancellation of the A-12, the Navy went out of the long range deep strike business. Unfortunately, with steadily better antiship missiles making coasts a place a carrier dare not closely approach, long range deep strike matters again.
Someone correctly notes upthread that robot UCAVs may be able to step in and replace the F-35. Yep. Also possibly able to take over the former A-6 mission. But the Pentagon isn't investing enough money quickly enough in the engineering effort required. Bad trouble ahead.

But the Typhoon is germane in one sense because of the ridiculous gestation time to produce the plane. Like the Panavia Tornado, multi-country service. But when France did not get their way, ie Eurofighter adopting the French design, they pulled out and produced the Rafeal. Meanwhile the other partners pressed ahead, even when Germany bolted and then rejoined.
How many names have been hung on this program since 1971? ECF, ACX, ACA, EAP, and Eurofighter 2000.
The Typhoon and the F-35 are not weapons programs, they are job programs disguised as defense programs.

As it turns out, the F-35 is both less capable, and more expensive that the F-22.
It's a piece of shit caught in an ever increasing demand for capabilities and mission-creep.
They should have continued producing the F-22 as an "Air-superiority" fighter.
The F-35 is never going to be a mature platform, considering ever evolving requirements. It will also never be a realistic CAS platform, although the AF will mothball 300 A-10Cs in order to purchase another 28 F-35s.
This is a classic "Goat Fuck", of the highest order...

The problem arises in adapting a USAF plane for carrier use. Classic example is the Northrop YF-17 that lost out to the General Dynamics F-16 for the LWF. Northrop decided to team up with MDD to pitch the YF-17 for a Navy requirement. MDD basically made a new airframe that only resembled the YF-17.

Strongly disputed by many.
Note that signature management encompasses many aspects, of which frontal aspect radar stealth in the most commonly used band is only one.
For example: last I looked, the F-35 was an absolutely enormous thermal target thanks to its big, hot engine. And a configuration that prevents the back end of that engine from being effectually masked.
The Skunk Works engineers of the 1970s and 1980s busted their tails to keep the original F-117's thermal signature small, to match the small radar signature. They were smart about that. But there's no way given the engineering trade space of the -35 that they could do so with this jet.
Meanwhile, as the jet got steadily hotter, stuff that looks for heat turned out to be one of the most rapidly progressing sensor technologies. AvLeak said a few months back that new-generation ultra-sensitivity infrared search and track is a game changer. Yep, most likely, especially against a plane that is the hottest dot on the scope.

What I suppose is that the engineers were presented with an impossible combination to try to achieve, and were thus inevitably forced to make tradeoffs.
Previously, there were jets that did A and B, and other jets that did B and C, and another jet that did D, and another for E.
The customer then asks for _one_ jet that does A, B, C, D, and E. And costs as little as the cheapest of the previous types.
End result? With herculean effort, the engineers crank out a design that kinda sorta is able to do all those things. In many cases does them less well than the original. But it's like the singing horse. The amazing thing isn't that the horse sings badly. It's that it does so at all.
Except then... getting down into the low level details... it turns out that things the customer hadn't prioritized in their design specification, the F, G, H level capabilities, had to be completely de-prioritized or sacrificed altogether because simply getting the A through E capabilities in the same plane excluded all other design trade possibilities.
So I'm sure someone in engineering at LockMart said, "We should have the engine nozzles flat and on top of the fuselage to mask IR, the way we've done before," and someone else said, "Negative, impossible to square this with the vertical lift variant of the plane. Customer has V/STOL as a non-negotiable requirement for one of the three variants."
Engineers can't work magic. What tricks they can do are Houdini tricks inside the constrained straitjacket of the primary design goals.
But Houdini got killed by a surprise gut punch, and the surprise gut punch here is that a jet which didn't worry too much about thermal stealth is going to face an adversary sphere that has gotten very good at finding and killing thermally prominent jets.

I used to run under a flight path where F4's would chase F14's out into the Pacific on training flights at very low altitudes (or vice-versa, it's been a while so I'm not 100% sure). What I do remember is that the F4 was incredibly noisy. Kind of like an airborne freight train.

Well, it's unusually cold in NorCal for this time of year. I went outdoors right at sundown, when it's usually comfortable short-sleeves temperatures in early May, and shivered.
And there was a message on the answering machine from some "Maunder Minimum" guy who says that he's back and he's pissed. Don't know what to make of that.

Here's the full movie. It's a pretty accurate portrayal of the acquisition process before it got "streamlined" to the JCIDS process we have now. Obviously, some things are done with artistic license; for instance, Kelsey Grammer's character spans the tenure of three different generals.

How many decades were the two of them together again? Quite a while.
Some key roles, you can't have someone else handle, not even family, if you're still able to do it yourself.
I think this is a sign of dogged mental health, actually. Not to worry over.
It's when the elderly give up on things that they would have previously staunchly insisted upon doing that you have to worry. It means they've given up.

Nothing but the A-10 can do the A-10 mission. And endure the sorts of damage that the A-10 has routinely soaked up, while returning safely to base with a live pilot.
The critics of the A-10 have a point that in a fight with a peer adversary, the A-10s will all be swept from the skies in the first 48 hours of fighting. True. When was the last time the USA fought a peer adversary?
It might happen, to be sure, but the statistics sure don't lean that direction.

L.A. is weird for me, as a Northern Cal person, in that my tactical spider sense goes off sometimes in places in L.A. that seem perfectly safe, and doesn't sound at all in places that look dangerous, and I can never figure out why, or whether I should trust it or distrust it.
A very different environment.
I will say that I have been caught in precisely one (1) firefight on a public street in my life, and that was in L.A., and I had absolutely no inkling that it was coming. I just suddenly heard rounds expended, and got under a car and tried to be inconspicuous. All kinds of fun.

No, but it is offset a couple of inches to clear the barrel, and the rifle itself without the bayonet is about 5 feet long, so you have plenty of time to gitcher ass up that tree you are supposed to have behind you.

A couple, raised in sheltered circumstances, who had never been to Commiefornia before, were planning a visit to the Bay Area and asked a friend if there were bad parts of Oakland that they should stay clear of.
He said, "Everyplace south of Emeryville and north of San Leandro. All the areas that are not Alameda or Piedmont. Anywhere within a ten mile radius of the docks or Lake Merritt. Anywhere along MLK, Telegraph or International."
(For those of you not from the Bay Area, there are about five square yards of Oakland that are excluded from these rules.)

Good sir: while I thank you for your response, it's about 10 years too late and my question (which I cannot now even remember) was long ago rendered moot. All I remember is that I addressed it to several board members, and repeated it, politely, at least once, and never received even one response, despite the fact that I had previously given both fish and advice to other Board members.
FYI, I currently maintain about 30 tanks with approximately 3000 gallons capacity total, and have 52 years of experience in the hobby. My lifetime membership in the ACA is now more of an annoyance than a resource, but I'll be darned if I'm going to save them a penny by telling them to stop mailing the Buntbarsche Bulletin to me.
BTW: if you run for the Board at any point, however, I will happily vote for you.

For years here, our family had an absolutely excellent small animal vet looking after our miscellaneous dogs, cats, birds, hamsters and what have you. I think we took a gecko in to his practice at one point.
First time into the place, he came limping up the hall, and I said, "Are you OK?"
He said, "Oh, no, this isn't new. I used to be a large animal vet."
An ill-tempered horse had taken exception to his working round its back end.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a horse fan. But they are big and dangerous animals. Always have that in the forefront of your thinking around them.

I've been (warily) all through Watts.
The part of L.A. that I had not been through, and have not, and would not have known even existed had one of the Horde not noted them, were the former residential neighborhoods in the beach dunes just off the end of the LAX runways.

I rescued all of mine years ago, but am becoming concerned that they may outlive me. The literature says they live 30 years, but does anyone really know? Ah. Well, since you can't now take grain and use it to produce boozamaholic beverages and then use the byproduct for productive ends like feeding cows, I figure what's best is to declare that you're using the grain residue as an agricultural soil additive, and then spread it on the ground where the feral pigs will smell the stuff and come in for it, where you can then shoot them and make sausage.

(In fact, though I don't shine a light on it, I read Orwell in the original English.)
I am gun-learned. Enough to have managed not to shoot my own sorry ass. I am yclept after a specialized automotive tool. I was arguing fine technical points of aerospace design upthread.
But I constantly learn from the rest of the Horde that the most important thing I know is what I do not know. Which is vast.

-Small sample-size. I know.
Perhaps I'll ask the masses after I hit my "NINE!" post.
I get laughs and I do well in front of people, but I've got a bright audience here.
I'll ask again when the Horde Brilliance is at its fullest.
I only ask because I'm insecure. It is a Pussy-word, but a revealing word simultaneously.
A comedian/entertainer should never ask: "How am I doing?"
To put it plainly? I feel "inadequate" at this site. My meager vocabulary is the only buoy I own in a sea of learned, crashing waves of Hayek and Orwell quotes.
I feel like a peon amongst the Gun-Learned and Automotive-Whizzes.
I'll cling to the Constitution, no doubt. I'll re-read The Federalist Papers again and again.
All I have from what I've read are "One-Liners", Catch-Phrases, Overton Window nomenclature and a subtle understanding of it all.
I'm not "awash". I'm merely moored to concrete values that I cannot express because I cannot understand The Bible, lest memorize its passages as beautifully as expressed here; Amongst Morons.
I've taken the long way to say that I think I'm an idiot.
Understanding that I'm an idiot is different than solving that problem.
I suppose that makes me Human. I know how to pray about that.
...but does it make me "funny" -?
Shit... I'll accept "silly".
No. I'm not British. Posted by: Slapweasel at May 11, 2014 03:26 AM (lq3Ak) Hide posts from (lq3Ak)

Don't get hung up on "am I tall?" or "am I blonde?" or "am I funny?" or "am I cute?". Each description can only focus attention on a tiny part of who you are. You've got a bunch of people who'd be disappointed if you changed a thing, even if you dyed your hair to something cooler.

OMG -- I'm assuming you know the history.....the stuff marketed in the US was such revolting swill.
OK, so you know I've got godkids in Sacto. Their mom was a campus AV tech at the University of Casual Sun-Bathing when I was there and would run projectors/sound systems around campus. One night, she was supposed to run a movie for some campus group's fundraiser, and it was....."Stop Making Sense".
So she's running the movie, and she's going "this is pretty good" and turns it up a little; then it goes on and she says, "this is pretty good" and turns it up a little.....and so on.....it's too bad she didn't coordinate with you because she had a tough time explaining why she blew out the speakers in Campbell Hall, the largest venue on campus. If only she could have explained that their speakers were made by Nissan.

I believe that tone and cadence have everything to do with message-delivery.
I had a knack for it, even in text, but the reactions just haven't been there.
I fear "losing my edge". I fear it a lot.
I can "hold court" amongst friends and strangers alike. Don't get me wrong. My buddies still rip me apart like I wasn't even there... lol.
I do better in a hall of strangers.
My "feedback" hasn't been there, so I feared I was slipping into some sort of depression, perhaps.
Maybe I just didn't have it anymore? Maybe I was just too pedantic. Maybe I don't write often enough because I'm "Out of Practice". Maybe I'm too abstract.
I can "perhaps myself" into a canyon, should I not test my mettle and/or ask people who might give me honest feedback. Posted by: Slapweasel at May 11, 2014 04:30 AM (lq3Ak) Hide posts from (lq3Ak)
We're getting older, Slap. Someday, you will "lose your edge." It's inevitable.
But what you need not do is to lose your heart.
A lot of "edge" is about putting up a front, copping an attitude, playing a role. There are a lot of people who can do this very well even when they are totally rotten inside. And -- to jump in here before you say "I'm flawed" -- I'm talking about child-molesting narcissistic monster "rotten" -- Slapweasels need not apply.
The reason that such monsters are frequently considered role-models is that there is such a complete disconnect between their heart and their role....but why is this important? Because it is not the norm. Normally, people take on a role and all the observers, gossip magazines, and spectators try to infer the real person.
And the same is true of Slapweasel. Sometimes he's funny, sometimes he's not; sometimes he's inspired, sometimes he's not -- but the Horde has an idea about who this Slap guy really is. And he's the sort of person we want to keep around.

IMHO opinion, they f'ed up the timing on the DVD. I Zimbra used to be in the main sequence of the movie, and it got booted out to a special feature.

I'd like to have the capability to Slap some f***ing Weasels, but I find myself laying-off and "Hoping" more than "Slapping".
I'm just not that kid anymore. Posted by: Slapweasel at May 11, 2014 04:56 AM (lq3Ak) Hide posts from (lq3Ak)
Don't worry about being phony -- people have been seeing through this for a while; worry, instead, about living up to the real "you" that people know. You try to act funny and ask if people think you're funny.....and people say, "you were acting funny, and sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn't -- but we got to know you in the process and you're ok."

There are large sections where you're on a narrow trail on a serious slope and you do "RIGHT-left, RIGHT-left, RIGHT-left", then hit a switchback and go "right-LEFT, right-LEFT, right-LEFT" (where you always keep your center-of-gravity towards the uphill side). It leaves you with a serious proclivity towards locking-up.

I'm not worried about being phony. I'm worried about finding my "tone".
There was a time when I stood in front of people and called a Weasel a Weasel.
I went to "Ferret".
Now I'm abstracting from name-calling, even though Weasels exist.
It is existential, but it isn't a crisis.
Now I'm babbling.
Thanks, cooth. ...all is well in Casa de Slap!
G'Night, amigo!

First Lady Michelle Obama joined vulnerable Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in a visit with military spouses on Saturday in New Orleans, telling the families, “You all keep me going.”
The first lady has had a busy weekend, first filling in for husband by delivering her first solo weekly address and then giving the commencement address at Dillard University.
Obama runs a military family support initiative called Joining Forces with Dr. Jill Biden, and she said she “jumped at the chance” to meet with about a dozen military and veteran spouses at the National World War II Museum.
“We’re all up in Washington hoping that what we’re doing is impacting you all on the ground,” she told them, according to a White House pool report. “It gives us a sense of what’s working, what’s not.”
She called their sacrifices and strength inspiring. “You all keep me going,” she said, leaning forward and pressing her hands on the table. “There are so few people who understand what it means to do the kind of service you’re doing.”
???? So why is your husbands administration and toadies trying to cut Military pay and benefits and generally use the DOD budget as a piggy bank?

It's called cover. The First Lady is the PR side of the equation. The dummies say, "Oh isn't that nice. They love the vets and then they go back to watching TV while the vets are getting screwed.
Jilll Biden is working for Vets in Delaware for what that's worth.

I am preparing to renew my driver’s license, a process requiring some considerable preparation. My last trip to a driver’s-license bureau, in Norwalk, Conn., ended with my giving very serious thought to returning later in the evening and burning the place down, the process having been so backward and the people so hateful. I have in my life had a number of unpleasant encounters with government agencies — handcuffed in Texas, terrorized by Mexican federales, assets seized by the IRS, chased about by India’s immigration authorities, etc. Frankly, I’d rather be pepper-sprayed than pay another visit to the Norwalk DMV.

The algorithms, built on data including last yearÂ’s sales trends, economic indicators, changes in weather and political pressures, are intended to create a perfectly predictable schedule and then provide real-time information for managers to make adjustments as these variables change.
This “just-in-time scheduling” helps employers piece together a jigsaw puzzle of part-time workers. But the needs of the workers themselves—for a stable paycheck and reliable hours around which to arrange child care, a second job, and other family and life commitments—are rarely entered into the calculus, experts say.
... “just-in-time scheduling” seems to be the next "Stand Your Ground" target

So why is the VA ending "means testing" and going straight to lifting your personal financial info from the IRS and SS to determine what treatments veterans qualify for?

From the article on the Yellowstone caldera: "The Praag article says that the South African government fears that placing so many Americans in South Africa could dramatically change the country.'South Africa will not be part of the plan, because there is a risk that millions of white Americans could be sent to South Africa in an emergency situation and that this would pose a risk to black national culture identity.'"
This just in: SOME countries are allowed to worry about how immigrants will affect their culture and politics. Good to know, ain't it?
