Overnight Open Thread (11 Jan 2014)

Boy we sure have Al Queda on the run. Al-Queda controls more territory than ever before. The table is set for Al Queda 3.0 to grow stronger this year. Of course, we have top men in charge right? Oh wait, never mind. 'Kerry is just not in touch with reality.'

Despite all that’s going on in the Middle East — the Iranian nuclear buildup, the violence in Iraq, the shaking of Erdogan’s rule in Turkey, civil war in Syria, Egypt and Yemen in melt-down mode, Libya unraveling, Tunisia in political crisis — U.S. secretary of state John Kerry has one main thing on his mind, and that’s a Palestinian-Israeli accord. Unbelievably, he is paying a twelfth visit to the region on January 13 to pursue this goal.
Precision Guided AR-15?

So easy a caveman can do it? With this new rifle, anyone can hit a moving target at 500 yards.

Investing In Pot

Wow. Pot shares rally 21% to 1,700% as speculators see green. I don't know. Legal pot is still twice as expensive as street pot and politicians can't help themselves and will tax the crap out of it.

Because Boobs

Lights Appear During Earthquakes

Why do lights sometimes appear in earthquakes? Man I grew up in earthquake country and I have never heard of this before.

Pittsburgh Steeler Whiner

Was this you BenK? Pennsylvania man sues NFL after Chargers make playoffs on missed call. Um, Pittsburgh has been on the plus side of botched calls (Super Bowl against Seattle, the Immaculate Reception) so turn about is fair play.

WWII

This is pretty cool. Animated visualization of day-to-day changes in the European theater during WWII.

Would You...

...pay $42K to have a "private" 1 hour webcam session with a pron star?

Grammar

Grammar and spelling are important.

Famous Dance Compilation

No chemjeff, I didn't see any Argentinian dancers.

Knights Of Badassdom

Looks like this flick is finally getting some kind of limited release. First Knights of Badassdom poster shows up. I think I still want to see this. I only have expectations of it being slightly better than Sharknado.

29 TrackingPoint is being a bit misleading, I think, by calling it precision guided. The bullets aren't guided, precisely or otherwise. Once the gun fires the bullets just follow their ballistic course. It's more precision aiming and firing. I know DARPA has worked on actual guided bullets but, so far, I don't think they've solved the problem. You need control surfaces and power to move them. Hard to make them that small. The TrackingPoint guns just use normal ammo.

36 That boobs cartoon is kinda funny, but not at all true, of course. It's actually a minority of men that like the ultra-boob look. A pretty small minority. The law of diminishing returns kicks in hard. Optimal boob size definitely follows a normal curve.

37 the only reason Kerry is jetting around the Mideast is to produce some worthless document in time for 2016 that the morons in the media will declare to be a "historic agreement", the LIV types will believe it to be a "real breakthrough" but anyone with any brains will realize is just a worthless piece of paper.  that's it.

113 TrackingPoint tech: -- TrackingPoint rifles include what are known as a ballistic computers. Used for decades on tanks, a ballistic computer takes into account a number of factors—wind speed, barrel and ambient temperature, range to target and ballistic performance of the cannon round—and computes what it would take to hit a target. The computer then compensates for those factors and makes corrections when the shot is fired. It makes tank guns extraordinarily accurate and is the reason why an M-1 Abrams has a 90-percent hit rate on a moving target 2,000 yards away. The size and complexity of the ballistic computer, as well as the sensors it needs—weather sensors, thermometers and laser rangefinders—are why these computers have, until now, stayed on tanks. However, miniaturization has finally made both processors and sensors small enough to mount on individual rifles. The TrackingPoint ballistic computer runs off Linux and is about the size of a pint glass. It has the same set of built-in sensors as a tank. The shooter acquires the target in the built-in heads-up display and places a red ‘X’ over it. This locks the rifle on the target. The shooter pulls the trigger, but the rifle doesn’t fire—yet. The computer takes into account known bullet performance, sensor data and even barrel wear. It crunches this data, determines when the rifle is on target and then fires. And it *will* hit the target.

The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk meant that Germany had much of the Soviet Union's Warsaw Pact area with the majority of its gains in the west.

What broke Germany's back was the combination of the blockade coupled with American Doughboys fighting like fresh forces without the cynicism of the main combatants.

You ever get in the mood to have Grognard Rage go to a Mil forum and ask if Imperial Germany *could* have held on.

Defibrillators work on a similar principle.  Normally, if some is in arrest, you push the button and it delivers the juice.  However, in some circumstances you shock someone who still has a heartbeat (cardioversion).  In those cases, the computer in the machine tries to synchronize with the native beats and delivers the shock at the optimum time to prevent complications, like causing an arrest.  Sometimes the delay can be 4 or 5 seconds, it can be a little unnerving.

D-Day was vital because it eliminated Germany's ability to focus air cover on the Eastern Front.  The Soviets needed relief HARD until '43 after that it became a matter of convenience for the Soviets.  Had England caved after Dunkirk like Hitler convinced himself they must Germany would have gassed out on the edge of Moscow anyway probably.

The logistics just weren't there for a Hippotrain majority supply system.

John Kerry makes 12 trips to the Middle East. Each trip requires 12 hours, 11 minutes one-way. His plane burns an average of 1 gallon of jet fuel every second.

255 So apparently there's new research that indicates narcolepsy is an auto-immune disease. And apparently you can get it from the flu. Basic idea is, I think, certain flu viruses have a protein that is similar in shape to hypocretin. Immune system can go haywire and end up attacking the neurons that produce hypocretin, resulting in narcolepsy. Apparently new cases of narcolepsy tend to develop in the winter after flu season. A lot of auto-immune problems seem to be similar. You get an infection of some type and your immune systems reacts and then gets confused and attacks something good in your body that is similar to the bad thing. So the short-term immune response ends up with a life-long auto-immune disorder. Just bad luck.

318 281 261 I do hate Windows 8 with the white hot passion of a thousand suns. A friend of mine and windows fangirl phrased it, unbelievably, as "Previous Windows versions did the work for you. You just had to click and poof, it happened. This version makes you have to really learn Windows." No shit Sherlock, the one click is what we used to like. Why wouldn't the Marketing geniuses at MS want to take that away so we can spend our time learning their Tech wet dream? Not everyone lives for new code. Some of us want simple and straightforward. Posted by: ManWithNoParty at January 11, 2014 11:25 PM (ojnk6) It's like what Google did with the Chrome browser recently. They removed the up and down arrows on the scroll bar on the right "because people used their wheel on their mouse" and their thumb on their Android devices. Really? What about us who use a laptop without a mouse? Some of these software developers add and delete shit for 1-2% of their users when the other 98% just want something that works faster.

333 Per the Bra Maker's Handbook which I used when planning my Avastin project, a 34DD breast weighs between 3 and 3.5 lbs depending on the density of the tissue (implants vs real). The model we used was a G cup and the weight of the breasts had to be factored in when designing the latex appliances. They weighed more than my wife's, who used hers as dummy until we could measure the model, and hers weighed over 6 lbs each. Upton's are no more than 3lbs a piece. That 10 lb figure is laughable.

Of course, they all started listing every black actor they could think of, all Americans. It took all I could not to say "Never. The only thing I miss about a Windows computer is the f2 key for edit, if you are typing or working on a spreadsheet. Thats why I have Windows as backup. There are quite a few websites that do not works with Safari, default browser. I think that will change soon. If you watch any television shows, look at computers they are using, most are Macs. Wow. Just wow.

Imagining the chain-reaction time-space-continuum shattering supernova explosions which would have been coming from identity-politics leftists if anything similarly clueless and tone-deaf had been written as 'advice to someone white starting to date someone nonwhite'.

467 Posted by: ManWithNoParty at January 12, 2014 12:27 AM (ojnk6) I did a lot to help Brown get elected in 2010 because I expected better from him. HeÂ’s really a dem light. HeÂ’s not a republican. He pissed me off voting for Dodd-Frank & others. I live in MA and donÂ’t expect a conservative but he got too friendly with the MA delegation. I almost passed out when they were first raising the debt ceiling. it was weekend morning & I had one of the CSPanÂ’s on and Reid introduced a sham bill & the only one that jumped up to vote for it was Brown. Reid voted against his own bill because it hadnÂ’t been written yet. IÂ’d rather know how my senators & reps are going to vote than to feel betrayed. That is why Brown lost his seat in 2012. Too many people here felt betrayed by him. He was one of the most supported pols at one time in history and ruined it. The Tea Party, Senate Conservatives wouldnÂ’t endorse him but suggested that people might make a donation to him. To paraphrase what one caller said to the local radio show host, Howie Carr, Scott didnÂ’t dance with the ones who brung him. ThatÂ’s why we have Warren & Markey now. I didnÂ’t vote for either and know what theyÂ’ll support, TFG. I didnÂ’t waste any $ trying to get Brown reelected because he disappointed me too many times. I refused to vote in MA special senate vote because primary winner calls himself a Republican but is really a dem. He recently got himself in trouble by calling two Republican activists here part of The Klan. Gabe Gomez looked good on paper but heÂ’s full of it.

Neither of those complaints is true. Search is built in, just start typing on the start screen or tap the Windows key and start typing. As for 'My Computer,' the File Explorer is right there on the desktop just as it was in Windows 7. If you want to do file stuff in the Metro environment, click on the SkyDrive tile and select This Computer from the drop down menu. Winkey+E also summons the desktop File Explorer, just as it has done all the way back to Win95. Desktop users will prefer that while the SkyDrive app is mainly for touchscreen use.

Windows 8 works just fine if you spend a whole five minutes learning to use it. You know, like you did with the previous versions. I'm using it right now on my main desktop and haven't had any real problems. If you are just moving from XP now you may find some of your old software was produced by incompetents who ignored the programming guidelines and got away with it because Microsoft hadn't yet learned that rules need to be enforced if you don't want to be blamed for other company's crap products. These guidelines finally got some enforcement behind them with Vista and everything since, so those who already left XP behind years ago have already made the transition and their stuff generally just works on Win8.

It would have been fun to watch him do that.  A lot of conservatives around the country would have liked for him to do that.  However, he was elected because the people in MA liked him better than Martha Coakley.  Anything beyond that is a pure guess and I just don't see the evidence that the same people who regularly reelected Ted Kennedy would have reelected a fiscally conservative Scott Brown.

My brother was that kind of freak. I remember him building a 55 chevy one time. Not being happy with the plain old chromed chevy plaques for the hood and trunk that came with the kit the sick bastard trimmed a brush to practically have a single frigging hair so he could paint them in the correct colors. He then went on to paint the details on the dashboard gauges. When he moved on to building fighter jets he stepped it up to insane levels.

On Monday they're going in to put in a feeding tube, and try to fix up his esophagus a little more while they're in there. The might change his pain control to an epidural then too.

On Windows 8.1 there is nothing below IE11 because that is the native browser. You'd have to revert to Windows 8.0 and you really, really don't want to do that.

In Windows 7 it's just a matter of going to the Programs and Features in Control Panel. (Right side column of the start menu.) From there, look on the left for View Installed Updates. Give it a few minutes as it tends to be slow showing the complete list. These are updates to installed software that can be uninstalled without eliminating the entire program. Most third party apps don't take advantage of it, so you'll likely so it filled with Microsoft items and stuff from Adobe.

The entry for IE11 will appear under the header Microsoft Windows, with about 250 other updates on a current Win7 setup. Uninstalling that should revert you to IE10 if you previously had that. Otherwise, it will go back to IE9. If you need to go all the way back to IE9 you have to go through the same sequence with uninstalling IE10.

You may want to just wait for LogMeIn to catch up with IE11. LogMeIn is one of the few things I still use IE for because they frequently fall behind on compatibility with Chrome and Firefox due tot he frequency of their new versions. Major IE releases are far less frequent, so LogMeIn tends to be more stable there. I haven't had any problem using it with IE11 myself. We have it on all of our remote monitoring laptops we used in Las Vegas this last week to check up on our pfSense and Ruckus ZoneDirector systems at the various locations where we had networks running.

One of my brothers went through a period of that. He had a model of a tank with a crew and he noticed under a magnifying glass that the commander had a folded handkerchief in his breast pocket. So he had to obtain a very fine brush to let him dab the most minute amount of white paint on there.

In New Hampshire, sure.  But in MA, particularly while Obamacare was being passed, that's a deal you make 100 times out of 100.  A lot of the legal challenges we still have are due to the fact the Dems used underhanded methods to push it through, which they ultimately had to because Scott Brown's election upset their plans.

Posted by: AD at January 11, 2014 09:36 PM (z6zMP)

556 Name a fiscal conservative who has won a statewide election in Massachusetts in the past two decades. I think obamacare tipped the scale, and they were ready to rein in the spending. But Brown's positions were wushu washy. He was all over the place. There was no figuring what he was going to do next. Sacajawarren on the other hand is delivering the suck she promised.

611 I've been mulling a few things over, and I'm thinking that we're on the doorstep of The Great Retraining. It seems that everyone has been conditioned to think that a college degree is going to make you a designer instead of an assembly worker -- when, in the years that was most effective, you were also guaranteed a bunch of hours as an assembly worker to pay your way through college. That meant that you could design things so their assembly was obvious and easy, write instructions that could be easily followed, and include features that made incorrect assembly difficult or impossible. We now have a generation of adults who never took apart clocks as kids, who never tried to fix something (successfully or not), who never worked a shit job while training their way to success, and who borrowed a shit-ton of money for a degree "cis-normal gender studies".

Apple is putting out commercials that say, "designed in Cupertino, California", but we know that they were manufactured in Asia.....and if Asians are doing all the manufacturing, how will the designers keep current on what is needed to "design for manufacture"?

I'm really thinking that we need more and more tinkering, experimenting, amateur machinists, technicians, and repairmen -- not because they're needed when everything is disposable and replacements are cheap.....but because that's how people learn how things really work.

Saw a bit about making the show, they would shamelessly "borrow" monsters/aliens between Irwin Allen products to save money.  Sometimes they'd even bother to paint them a different color.

I never saw Time Tunnel until some time in the 1990s. It used to drive me insane as a kid who was an SF junkie, to always see it listed on some UHF station we couldn't get. It seems it fell under a different syndication regime than the other Irwin Allen shows.

They've been predicting such problems for a long time in publications like EE Times. Places like China and India are not content to just be factories. They want a bigger piece of the action and to have more design happen there. The moves/countermoves are coming thick and fast -- when I was in High School, I was usually being taught by folks who had degrees in useful subjects, like chemistry.....now, you can't be a teacher without a degree in Education, but a degree in subject matter is entirely optional. Next thing you see is a rise in homeschooling/charter schools. Then unions conspire to use government to beat back homeschooling/charter schools -- and the government insists on Common Core to make schools into indoctrination centers instead of centers of learning.

I could easily see corporate-led degrees....except that companies like GE, GM, Pharma, agribusiness, Goldman Sachs, and banking are more about sucking the government teat than having an actual functioning business. The evil of regulatory capture doesn't end with a corporation using government to quash its competitors -- it ends with the focus of the corporation changing from "satisfying [barely] customers" to "continuing governmental groupthink." Look to the way healthcare companies are currently echoing "abused spouse" behaviors with the Feds -- "he hit little Mikey today, but he's very, very sorry and I'm sure he still loves me." -- except "little Mikey" is the US citizen caught up in this dynamic between two groups who are supposed to be looking out for him.

By contrast, one night I was in Sacramento at some "Food Warehouse"-flavor horrible grocery store -- the kind with Home Depot-style racks, limited choices, no heat in the aisles, checkout that leaves you to bag it yourself, etc.. I was getting beer, and there was a couple ahead of me with a young'un, and she was showing a bump for another. They had a sack of rice, beans (not already refried, but actual dried bean beans), milk, butter, cheese, lard, a sack of flour, and some other items -- y'know, prepper shit -- and they paid with food stamps.

I nearly hugged 'em, right there in the checkout. they had all the ingredients for a healthy life of impoverishment -- no sign of luxury -- and they were going to raise healthy kids....who will want more goodies from their lives but won't be hampered by a childhood with lack of love, care, calories, or nutrients. For what they spent their food stamps on, I would give from my own pocket and wish them the very best. There was no soda, bottled water, candy bars, frozen entrees, cookies, or anything pre-processed. It was sustenance and no more. It was going to take them hours to make that shit edible, and it wasn't going to be all-that enjoyable to choke down, but it was going to be healthy and an efficient use of Uncle Sam's dough.

736 I am up too early & will probably go back to sleep after I finish eating 2 blueberry scones. I'm trying to gain a few pounds. They have a lot of calories & are good first thing in the morning.

Posted by: Carol at January 12, 2014 02:29 AM (z4WKX)

737 Carol, up early here too, as usual. I'll skip the scones however. Trying too lose a few pounds here.

Posted by: Havedash at January 12, 2014 02:32 AM (G1XMn)

738 It's one but only a few of us are up!

Posted by: Carol at January 12, 2014 02:33 AM (z4WKX)

739 Good morning, Carol and Havedash. I went to bed pretty late and set my alarm for 5:00 to watch the capture of Cygnus by the ISS. I finally got out of bed at 6:00. Still pretty groggy.

Posted by: rickl at January 12, 2014 02:33 AM (sdi6R)

740 How did it go, rickl?

Posted by: Havedash at January 12, 2014 02:35 AM (G1XMn)

741 They captured it. I didn't see much because I got up late and they were out of range of the satellite at the time. NASA TV will come back on about 7:00 EST for coverage of the installation. They don't call it "docking" when the robotic arm is involved.

Posted by: rickl at January 12, 2014 02:42 AM (sdi6R)

742 Morning horde.   Bisquits and sausage gravy in 15 minitues.  Of course, a beer too.  Way too early here.  Been up for hours.

Morning all...
Coffee?

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 12, 2014 02:48 AM (GcYmn)

744 And NASA TV is back on. The arm is maneuvering the Cygnus cargo ship into position. There was a test flight back in September, but this is the first "official" cargo flight for Cygnus.

Posted by: rickl at January 12, 2014 03:04 AM (sdi6R)

745 rickl, is that big gapping maw where it is supposed to connect?

Posted by: Infidel at January 12, 2014 03:07 AM (6bvBO)

746 Yes, that's where the hatch is. Once it's firmly attached, then they can open the station hatch and Cygnus' hatch, and get the cargo.

Posted by: rickl at January 12, 2014 03:11 AM (sdi6R)

747 Mmm...coffee.

Posted by: rickl at January 12, 2014 03:18 AM (sdi6R)

748 Carol, I have a few extra  pounds. You're welcome to them.

764 NASA TV signing off. So, a good start to 2014 in space, with two successful missions. SpaceX launched the Thaicom 6 communications satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit last Monday, and Orbital Sciences Corporation launched the Cygnus cargo vehicle on Thursday. Orbital also built the Thaicom 6 satellite that SpaceX launched. When the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, there were no American vehicles capable of flying to the ISS. Now we have two, SpaceX's Dragon being the other one.

768 US House of Representatives should look at what our Founding Fathers wanted for people to vote. I believe you had to be a property owner. That would spare us from FSA voting for idiots. I don't think it would help with LIVs. They are more interested in celebrities & the likes of them. I know that a television show used to end with cast singing Good Night Until We Meet Again & I can't remember which one it was. Did anyone answer question?

772 Yes, since I don't have TV now, trying to picture what is happening in the game from reading the comments can be quite amusing.

773 I found a thorn? stuck on bottom of toe next to my big toe. I have no idea how that happened. I have to try to remove it today. It wasn't there last time I used Mr Pumice in my feet. I think it was probably near clothes dryer from late summer or early fall. I have rose garden & take garden clothes & put in washing machine as soon as I'm done for day. I find all things in washer afterwards. It must have gotten stuck on carpet near dryer.

774 I know this is going to come as a shock to everyone, the MSM are really digging in and pushing the GWB shutdown in new jersey. I can't imagine why they are really chasing down this story with vim and vigor....

My grandmother used to say it was a bad omen for lightning when trees had no leaves on them. It's weird how there are some things I remember, she passed away when I was 15 years old.

798 Watching this disaster grow over the last few years has filled me with such rage at the catastrophic decisions that threw away the sacrifices made by so many Americans. I don't know if the present generation will understand and judge those responsible but History certainly will condemn.
