Man, Keith Koffler nails it. The root of Obama's imperious Presidency.
Obama is, for a politician, a relative loner who doesnÂ’t want to be bugged by members of Congress. Of either Party. He has no famous chums in Congress. He has few relationships of any sort with lawmakers. Really what he wants to do is make his decisions in the Oval Office, have a few meetings, give some speeches on college campuses and high schools, and play golf. And then send Jay Carney out to talk about how Republicans are intransigent, politically motivated hacks who donÂ’t even wear deodorant.

Bathrooms
No longer will kids in California have to figure out which one is the girls bathroom and which one is the boys bathroom. In California, girls can use urinals in the boys room. As long as they feel like they are a boy that day. Vice versa for the boys. Maybe we can finally answer if the ladies room is really a wondrous room with couches and stuff. Or maybe even find the cure for baldness (as per Richard Jeni's syllogism bit).
Further, since "men are going bald, and they are from the planet earth," and "women aren't losing any hair," it is clear that "women have, indeed, come from some other planet."
Richard went on to say that since men were forbidden from the ladies room that it was obvious the cure for baldness was in the ladies room.
Smart Starlet

They don't make Hollywood starlets like they used to.
They began talking about radio control for torpedoes. The idea itself was not new, but her concept of "frequency hopping" was. Lamarr brought up the idea of radio control. Antheil's contribution was to suggest the device by which synchronization could be achieved. He proposed that rapid changes in radio frequencies could be coordinated the way he had coordinated the sixteen synchronized player pianos in his Ballet Méanique. The analogy was complete in his mind: By the time the two applied for a patent on a "Secret Communication System," on June 10, 1941, the invention used slotted paper rolls similar to player-piano rolls to synchronize the frequency changes in transmitter and receiver, and it even called for exactly eighty-eight frequencies, the number of keys on a piano.

A short, squat, and unattractive aircraft, the Buffalo entered service in the same year as the Mitsubishi A6M Zero and the Bf-109, two overwhelmingly superior aircraft. Although the Buffalos operated by the Finnish Air Force did well against the Soviets in the early days of the “continuation war,” Buffalo pilots serving in Commonwealth and Dutch air forces in Southeast Asia were massacred by Japanese fliers in Zeros and Oscars. To add to its least desirable characteristics, the Buffalo performed poorly in the high temperatures common in the tropics.Marine Corps pilots referred to the Buffalo as—you guessed it—a “flying coffin” in the wake of the Battle of Midway, where the aircraft performed disastrously against the Japanese. It was quickly replaced in U.S. service by its far more effective counterpart, the Grumman F4F Wildcat.

To the point where some of those gray eminences of the establishment wing are starting to whisper that what the GOP really, really needs to do for its 2016 nominee is to take another hard look at Mitt Romney. Mitt! Come back! All is forgiven!
They're overlooking the obvious. The true man of the hour. The candidate of destiny. There can be only one.
Bob Dole is ready to answer the call. When his country asked him to serve, Bob Dole was there. Bob Dole is tan, rested and ready. Bob Dole will be whomever you want him to be. You want me to be Reagan? Bob Dole will be Reagan. You want me to be the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man? Bob Dole will be the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man. Bob Dole is nothing if not versatile. I'm Bob Dole and I approve this message.

Not just having to deal with the Zeroes, but Zeroes flown by the prewar-trained Japanese pilot cadres. Within whose ranks the brilliant Saburo Sakai was reckoned only a pilot of average ability.
The war got a hell of a lot easier after a couple of rounds of attrition slowly killed off most of the superbly trained prewar pilots and the far less adept replacements began to show up.

I'm guessing even the last part is going to get old and busted, for the Mexican-Mexicans in Cali.
Back home in old Méhhico the local middle class has, after eighty years of the "Institutional Revolution", wised up. The old upper-class Castilian twits simply joined the PRI and screwed them just as hard as they did under Diaz. I bet a lot of the older Californian Hispanics are looking down south and thinking of their future in Alta California.

I can't recall if it was linked by ace or not, but there was an article a couple of months ago which indicated that the smartphone revolution was starting to have major nonlinear effects on Mexican politics.
I may be misrecalling some of the details, but in Mexico City, some spoiled daughter of a government functionary was denied her favorite table at a trendy restaurant, and she whistled up Papa, and he promptly had the restaurant fucked over and shut down on some dubious "official" pretext, and this went viral via other patrons with smartphones dumping the particulars to Mexican social media.

I like them both, but the original is still overall better, especially in terms of the brothers' relationship. In the remake there was *so* much drama between them, but in the original it's, "I'm your brother, just make it count." Brilliant.
Also the original felt much grittier, less sunshiny, and more desolate than the remake. I think the pilot's recounting the war and describing the overall situation definitely helped set the mood, which is pretty much how I'd expect it to be like if we really got hit that bad.
What I did like about the remake was the intro and I felt their escape was more believable than the original. In almost everything else though, the original kicked ass.

The first Han Solo spinoff, "Paradise Snare", was excellent. Also good were the first eight or nine of the Qui-Gon / Obi-Wan books for juveniles. And "Shatterpoint" (the Mace Windu book) was hilarious just for how the author channeled Samuel L Jackson in his dialogue.

I wouldn't mind, but my 1st pick would be somebody along the lines of Jeremy Irons. Now who would play Pelleaon? Preferably somebody a bit wizened, such as the actor who played Senator Gracchus in Gladiator (Derek Jacobi).
If Elijah Wood wants to play yet another small character, he can be Rukh, .
Posted by: Thrawn at January 17, 2014 09:42 PM (WlWt+)
They should have made that damn movie 15 years ago when the books were fresh and the Rebel principles weren't old enough to be their own grandfathers.
And Pellaeon was someone who had physical presence in the book as well, so you need someone with some stature. Alas, Christopher Lee was already wasted on the prequels. FWIW, I agree that Irons would make a good Thrawn, but Weaving is not a bad choice.

The submissions thing is news to me. I know the author of the original book, and knit for her.
You can absolutely design in the abstract, and I have done so. But the sizing is based on knit gauge (stitches per inch) so you're always going to have to do some of the work. I always knit a sample for things I design, sometimes in a few sizes.
If you release a pattern, it must have been knit in its entirety. To release an untested pattern is folly and you'll be ridiculed, and probably never sell another pattern.

So, to teh horde: I hear she likes wine. Should I go buy some and bring it over? - and if so (it probably is so) - what should I get? Posted by: boulder toilet hobo at January 17, 2014 09:23 PM (Xfl0F)
I always appreciate it when someone gives me a bottle of wine - but it's even better when they give me a bottle of wine I actually like drinking. And that's tricky. Does she like sweet or dry wines - red or white? Or rose? I liked Riesling and sweeter wines when I was young, but my tastes have changes - now I like Pinot Noir the best.
I would not take offense at all if someone asked me -so ask, if you don't know.

The VNAF A-1 was battle damaged with bombs still hanging in the breeze. By doing some sharp maneuvers got the hung bombs to depart and fall. But when he tried to lower the two main gear, the A-1 has two mains and a tail wheel, only one main lowered. So was landing with two of three down. And then going bingo means "Oh sh!t! I'm outta gas!" So plopped it down on two and then using that big rudder and ailerons to keep the plane straight down the runway as long as possible. But once airspeed dropped, lift was lost and plane settled down hard. Propeller bent as the wing-tip on the side without the main gear dug into the runway. If the pilot was lucky the other main gear now collapses and the plane pancakes on its belly still sliding. Or if the down gear stays attached then the plane will spin around on the dug in wing-tip and he might flip the whole plane.

I'd rate it about a C-minus. Subverting the genre and making little winks at popular culture is interesting... if it hadn't been done in 1998 as "Scream". And then about twenty times better recently as "Tucker and Dale Versus Evil" and (risking the wrath of teh Chick's ravage) "Cabin in the Woods".
I guessed what was going on just before the dad got killed.
So, points for not being completely predictably slasher-gasher; but that's about it.

I have a question:
The puppy - mostly a glorious fellow - suffers from a really profound separation anxiety.
I've never had a dog who completely lost his puppy wits when left alone (even for five minutes). He's an English Setter, and I knew I was getting into a much less mentally tough dog than a corgi, but I didn't anticipate this, and haven't run across any discussion of this kind of anxiety in the books on the breed.
What am I missing?

If you don't mind spending some dough (about $50 a bottle), get a beautiful Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena. Smooth and lovely.
If you don't have the $$, or don't want to spend the $$, you can watch a movie about Chateau Montelena called "Bottle Shock" which is currently on Netflix and stars Chris Pine. Bring a Yellow Tail Chardonnay (either regular or my preference, the unoaked).
(look at me tie all these crazy themes together!)

Mrs. O'Leary's Cow, he specializes in weeping and moaning. The moans are particularly heart-rending, when accompanied by frantic scratching at the door (or so my assistant tells me). I know about the crying and the moans - they carry amazingly - though I had not personally witnessed the "going ape" that my assistant told me about.
My boyfriend has been taking him to work most days (I took him once, and that will not be repeated for a while), and he has some stories about the puppy's separation anxiety - usually, it's just noise, but every once in a while, he'll escape, get into an area he's not supposed to be in, and begin having hysterics. It's kind of disturbing to his co-workers.

Red Storm Rising is way, way too big for one movie. You're talking Gone With The Wind length to just get in the bare bones. Cardinal of the Kremlin doesn't have the pacing for a modern movie--it's basically the From Russia With Love of Clancy's books. Not his best book, but quite good.
Oh, incidentally, From Russia With Love is the best Bond movie and I will entertain arguments for others, but answer with derisive laughter.

My own Pinewood car was wholly conventional, but a friend in later life (who grew up only a few miles away unknown to me) said that he and his dad rigged his Pinewood car for a bit of RATO assist from Estes model rocket engines.
The judges laughed and disqualified him immediately, but quietly insisted that he hang around after the official time trials for some "unofficial" testing.

One cure for separation anxiety I've used is to take pup outside, park himon a leash and disappear around the corner out of sight.
Wait until he starts getting upset then reappear, go to him and make a fuss over him.
Repeat this daily, extending his alone time a few minutes, he should get the idea that you--or someone-- WILL reappear.
Maturity also may lessen the problem.
BTW, how old was he when you got him?

He likes bluegrass, which makes my poor boyfriend shake his head. When I drove the puppy up to San Francisco, he and I sang along with the bluegrass station, and that got him over his fear of the car.
Generally, he's glorious. He's really friendly, both with people and dogs, playful, companionable, but he wants a human being at all times. I'd put that in all caps, but that would be rude. The other morning, his collar unlatched, and he was without a leash; he didn't care. He just wanted to be close to me.
He's a very good puppy. I adore him, and (if he had not had his dew-claws removed before ever I met him) he has me wrapped around his dew-claw. But he's not responding to any of the things I'm used to dogs responding to! I can't desensitize him, I can't jolly him out of it, he just does not want to be left alone.

It started shaking. At first I thought, ehhh, but then it got worse and worse. Found myself standing outside my bedroom in the hallway as the roar got louder and louder. Quake sound was bad enough, but add to that the sound of my building creaking. Plus the sound of glass breaking, and hearing my upstairs neighbor scream.
When the quake ended, every goddamn car alarm in the world was going off.
Tried to find my shoes. Opened up the blinds hoping there would be some light, but LA was black. When I finally got dressed and outside, saw the stars for the first time ever in LA after the dust had settled.
Gotta admit, that was one hell of a wakeup...

There are days of hugely meaningful accomplishment. Where I can look back with a giant sigh of satisfaction in what I've finished.
Then there are days like today when I didn't get anything meaningful done at all. A complete scratch. Total waste. All I did was stay up too late farting around ineffectually the previous night, wake up too tired to function well today, and "waste oxygen".
But, hey, I've converted that oxygen into perfectly useful CO2 plant food, and the house plants will be all the happier as a result. So there's that.
And by tomorrow they will have made some fresh oxygen. I'll put it to better use.

It's partly because he's smart, I think.
My assistant, when I had him at the office, told me that, even though I waited until he was deeply asleep to run down the hall to the ladies' room, he woke up before I had been gone three minutes, and came running into the front office, and (as she described it) "proceeded to lose his puppy shit".
When I got back, she was holding him, he was moaning/howling, and struggling.
The second he saw me, he flung himself at me, and did the whole submission thing.
I have no clue what that means, exactly.

I find with older dogs, giving them a quiet corner and a meaty butcher's bone of their own will do wonders to keep them quietly happy. Gnaw-velous. But 14 weeks is too young for that, unfortunately.

re: Five worst fighters
The F-104 wasn't really designed to be a fighter. They were interceptors, go fast go high and lob a couple of missiles -- preferably nuclear tipped -- at a Ruskie bomber formation.
They got tasked as fighters, especially for export sales, because -- well when all you have is a hammer....

Yes it is late enough., I miss them too. I tried to get Jones to meet me at a tail gate party but he declined saying he wouldn't pay for such shit. I also went on a rant one night about "looking for greener pastures" and Jake came out of hiding to give me encouragement. Billy Bob I have no clue about but I am sure I miss him too!

That's why the Brit should deliver this year's SOTU address. I'd even watch it.
When the Grand Casino opened in Biloxi, MS around 1995 or so, it was, as a certain nitwit sez, a Big Fucking Deal. No casino had ever spent that much on one place before, not in our neck of the woods. Three floors of gaming. But the thing that caused the biggest stir was the second floor ladies bathroom. They spent a million bucks on that bathroom.
They gave tours of it. I had my wife sneak me in there late at night so's I could get a gander. Gold plated fixtures. Couches. A chandelier.
I wanted to live there.

I'm in Wisconsin (I know there are a few cheesehead Morons out there - but, except for mamawinger, they are not that close to me).
Chicago can be a blast to visit. Wrigley, Chicago-style hot dogs (the best ones I've had), Michigan Ave., Rush St. I went to an LGF get-together back in 2004 that was a ton of fun (Iowahawk was there), and there are good restaurants and bars, etc.
I had fun in NYC when I was there too. Doesn't change my conviction that the rot in both cities is so widespread that to visit or live in either city is like walking on the thinnest of thin ice - one day soon, it'll cave and those who thought they were happily skating along on the surface will find they're up to the nostrils in icy water and sinking.

Actually, I liked German -- it was my original choice of language, but my folks kept moving away from places where it was taught. Since I detested French [as an antisocial avid reader, I'm not a fan of languages that are not spelled as they are written -- lest I sound like a total dipshit by saying "corpse-man"], that left me with Spanish.
The reason I was in third-year Spanish and first-year college German was because you can't set German aside and pick it up again as easily as you can Spanish. I'd actually taken German twice before.
And you really have to love a language where you might say: "I would like around the block to walk and in the windows to look."

What is particularly interesting is that the street is shared by cable cars, automobiles, horse-drawn carts, bicyclists, and pedestrians, without any traffic lights, stop signs, or any government regulation whatsoever. It's completely unregulated anarchy, and it works. I didn't see anybody killed in this film, although there were countless close calls.

Those have been around for over a year. You can even find some 256 GB models. The problem is the premium you pay. There was a deal for one at $40 after rebate listed on Dealighted yesterday or early today. I was sort of tempted, as I was addicted to acquiring flash drives for a while. I won't bother with anything less than 64 GB now, and the price has to be really good.

Posted by: The Electoral Hat at January 18, 2014 02:21 AM (AymDN)
History seldom repeats itself exactly, but it often rhymes. Squeaker gaining the Senate to thwart a Progressive lunatic in 1918, 2014 -- yeah, I could see that. "Return to normalcy" Republican swamps Dem? Yeah, I could see that in 1920, 2016....but look at the electoral maps. There won't be a solid Dem south this time around. There may be too many "name-brand" GOPers to look back and say "came out of nowhere".
The big divide is going to be urban/suburban. How many big city syndicates can deliver states EVs over kicking-and-screaming suburbanites?

The next big, big, big conservative win isn't going to pussyfoot around things -- the top-line slogan is going to be "they think you're stupid because they've spent the last 30 years trying to make sure of it." We may gain some traction in 2014/2016 by making nice, but it's gonna be tectonic when someone finally puts the hammer on it.

If it's a revolving, or variable-rate LOC -- absolutely. If it's a fixed-rate LOC, then you may want to question your assumptions. The Fed has been artificially depressing interest rates for a while now, but may end up letting 'em return to levels not seen since Carter [reason discussed at http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=227616 ]. If you have money borrowed at, say, 5% and will soon be able to lend money at, say, 15%, it may be worth holding on to this option until you can lock it in. But that is only if you have a LOC at a fixed rate.

If you really want to improve universities, your bottom line, and your employee base -- post real-world problems on your website, review solutions by by job-seekers, and hire the person who submits the best solution. If your university is worth a shit, they'll make your problem a senior project and help critique it. That will help make your solution to be optimal. And you'll end up with clearly superior employees.
And, of course, if your university is an exercise in fapping -- the best solution will be elsewhere, and you won't waste your time looking at their graduates.

I can't afford to hire the whole gang, and while team work is great - I cant ID who was pulling the real weight and who needs to go work a big company. I fail to see the problem WRT that issue v. standard hiring. You're going to get some winners and some losers both ways. I think you'll get more winners if you ignore the academics and focus on the solutions, but I might be wrong.
Incidentally, I had an odd experience a few years back.....I had effectively been the general manager of a company, led by an eccentric genius -- then, several years later, found myself as a contracted internal-audit manager to a public company who had been our cross-town rival. As you might imagine, I knew all sorts of things about their pressure points.
But one thing that I found truly hilarious was coming across the resume of a guy who had worked for me while testing their HR. Amazingly enough, every successful initiative that I had implemented had been his idea, and he had successfully pressed its implementation in the face of my resistance. I was laughing my ass off as I went through it.
I was fond of the guy, and wish him every success in the world -- even if it's based on appropriating my successes to his cause, 'cause success is success. But in the real world he, at least, knows what success looks like.

There have been massive population declines before.

Here's the problem in a nutshell -- when I became sexually mature, there were a variety of Darwinian "lifestyle strategies" available to me. The one that I chose, based on societal pressure and information available to me, was "continue personal development/inhibit childbearing". Now, at the age of 51, I can elect to earn but have it taxed away to those who had children or their children now....but, crucially, cannot expect any intergenerational support from those whose prospects were improved by my choices.

To put this another way -- I should've screwed every chick I could've, without protection, in order to raise the largest amount of bastard brats possible....because they may have inherited some part of my IQ, out-earned the commons, and provided me a better-than-government-supplied lifestyle in my old age.

"Yeah, so?"

He understands his field. My criticism with the "cult of experts" is not their dedication in many cases to their pool of knowledge, it is with may of their rank's desire to engage in technocracy. A wise man knows when events have rendered him a layman and then seeks new perspective.
Ace didn't see fit to respond to my assertion that if the Technocracy wants to scream, "YOLO!" and blow up healthcare "because" costing trillions, or obliterate the Industrial Power Grid "because" perhaps they should run honestly on such notions and forfeit all credential for life with such wonderful results?

Ace, perhaps the word you were reaching for was technocracy the rule of an elite coterie of experts from cross disciplines in administering enlightened mechanisms and controls on a body of defacto subjects.
If the "educated" would like their technocracy to blow trillions at a time on wrecking health care, blowing up industrial energy grids and whatnot perhaps they could run OPENLY on that system of governance rather than cloaking it in gauzy bromides like "help" and "coordinate"?
I don't reject the expert's knowledge being superior to mine, I have seen far too often the last 15 years the expert reject the humility to know when a situation has rendered him a layman.
Regards,
Sven

It was. That is why the left went into Shrieking Flying Monkey mode over it. Rumsfeld was an expert with the integrity to tell you he didn't know.
I am not wanting to re-litigate Iraq's stabilization ops the fact is I thought we were too thin and had I had the power would have counseled leaving the Republican Guard extant and installing *our* son of a bitch, but unlike Krugaton and Mann-Child Rummy told you the limits of his advice.
