The Pacific Pivot isn't working so well. Pretty typical result based on all previous pivots. There have been, what, 19 pivots alone on jobs. How's that working out? Now comes the class warfare pivot.

Destroying the American dream is easy, just make it so the people no longer believe in themselves, and they will cling to Uncle Sam as their provider.

That is Obama’s transformation, and it is the core of the messaging pivot toward whining about “income inequality.”

America used to reject this politics of envy. Obama’s desperate pivot away from the ‘Obamacare’ debacle is betting that the transformation of the American mindset is far enough along, that he can survive through standard Marxist class warfare language, and people will forget the failure of big government that his health care law represents.

Pick-Up Lines

These are pretty bad pick-up lines. I'm pretty sure an Aussie accent will make those lines work here in the States. Bottom line though, you gots to have game.

Causes Of Death

You can spend a lot of time playing with the data that shows you the causes of death between 1990 and 2010. Interesting to note the differences for the US between men and women.

30 CC, IÂ’m sorry Mrs. Crank has had a headache all day. Paul is back in the rehab since New YearÂ’s Eve but he was in the hospital for so long they gave him another room. They just gave him a 99 1/2 year old roommate and heÂ’s driving him crazy. The man must be deaf and I could hear his television on and there are tons of visitors & they are all loud. I could hear them when I was talking to him yesterday. Paul is still on oxygen, I donÂ’t think itÂ’s a good sign. He went to the hospital on December 6 because he couldnÂ’t breathe.

Unsurprisingly, the ranks of chick cage fighters tend to have a very high % of lesbians. UFC has done well with female fighting so far. I do wonder how well it will do when the best fighters are mannish lesbians and not hot straight chicks. My guess is fan interest will decline.

117 what do those sights do? Posted by: the snarkster ----------------------- Allows you to use a scope or iron sights interchangeably. This can also be accomplished if your irons are co-witnessed through your scope. I just found these 45 degree irons for really cheap and I'm just playing around with them. 146 Okay, so I get this email full of rage from the DCCC and had no friggin clue what they were going on and on about. House Republicans have finally released their jobs plan: According to Republican Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, denying women’s rights to make their own health care decisions “very much promotes job creation." Are you kidding me? Right now, Rep. Goodlatte and his all-male Republican Judiciary committee members are fast-tracking a bill that could force rape survivors to prove their cases to the IRS in order to have their abortion covered by insurance. I’ve had enough of it. Will you join us to get 100,000 strong standing against the radical anti-woman agenda? Click here to automatically add your name and stand up for protecting women's rights >> This much is clear: House Republicans have doubled-down on their War on Women for 2014. Instead of passing jobs legislation, or extending unemployment benefits, or raising the minimum wage, House Republicans are trying to turn the IRS into abortion auditors. It’s hard to believe how off-kilter Republican priorities really are. Goodlatte said what?! So I look it up and, initially, I am kind of taken aback. Then I think about it some more and, frankly, no matter how awkward it is to say, it's true. There is an economic price to pay for every abortion. Every human is a consumer. Read this quick piece and tell me if you have the same reaction. http://t.co/Ojt6VwKyKB

183 "1987, Ocean Safari, USS Forrestal. On the flight deck. At night. Wiring gripe on a Tomcat. We were in the North Atlantic, just off of Norway."

Nothing good can come of this.

I know a former frigate guy who related stories of that part of the ocean, wherein they accumulated so much topweight from ice one winter night that the ship's rolls became deeper every time, and the recovery slower every time, until pret-near everyone aboard was convinced the next roll would take them over for sure.

Hardened old petty officers with years of wartime combat service were freaked.

That, on a coal black night, in really big seas. Yikes.

191 NDH, RE: No Taxpayer Funds for Abortion Act (HR 7) Seems to be a reintroduced bill to work around forced taxpayer funded abortion money to Planned Parenthood. I can't find a reliable transcript of what he actually said but judging from past anti-Fed abortion actions I am a bit skeptical. I know I moved back to Texas just as they had the big fight over restricting abortion clinics that were not proper medical facilities and the media coverage was frankly a complete lie. By that I mean in 95% of coverage the statements made and actions taken were actually just made up. I read a story that a State Rep. had stood up and announced that they were going to outlaw abortion just to teach democrats a lesson and that pro-abortion protesters were attacked by prayer groups and other BS. BTW a big story was that pro abortion protesters going to the gallery above the legislative floor had their purses searched and tampons seized. Yes, that happened but they did not include that they had boxes and boxes of tampons seized along with 18 mason jars of human feces and one jar of urine. HR 7: http://tinyurl.com/lsmv8l9

Dump all into a 6quart slow cooker. Nuc it until cheese is mostly melted and then set slow cooker on low until the rest is melted. Mix well and serve with Tostitos Scoops (2-3 bags). It makes a shitload, but keepsmin the frig for a week or so. It's never missed for me at gatherings. For smaller crowds, cut everything in half.

287 I typed in "Bob Dylan" in the music timeline and got this: http://research.google.com/bigpicture/music/#s%3Abob%20dylan It shows an enormous burst of popularity in 1961, a couple of aftershocks, and then practically flatlining after 1990. I have a number of problems with this. The first one being that his first album was released in 1962, and it wasn't all that great. And WTH is the "foreshock" from 1959???

300 Duran Duran was to the 80s music scene what Nirvana was to the 90s music scene--had influence way out of proportion to actual talent yet somehow became the exemplar of the genre, and absolutely murdered dozens of musicians' careers in the process.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at January 18, 2014 11:51 PM

I'm not even sure that's a valid comparison. The whole thing with retro 80's lookbacks going heavy on Duran Duran is a distortion. They weren't that big, nor were they all that important. Their actual influence doesn't match the narrative. I'm not saying they sucked nor that they had no influence, but the whole thing is exaggerated. They had some hits, some videos and general impact style wise, but, no more than a slew of others during those years. It's just that Duran Duran serve effectively as a kind of shorthand that says "1980's".

305 I just got another stark reminder of our so-called economic recovery. The supermarket within far-ish walking distance of my home is being shut down. A Ralphs store that first opened in the early 90s apparently cannot justify its existence, despite the substantial increase in local population. This means the plaza containing it will soon have more empty spaces than leased spaces. The row of buildings across the street has never had any tenants, having had the grand misfortune to be under construction in 2008. All that will remain for local businesses will be 90% fast food and gas stations.

To be fair, another Ralphs location opened a few miles south in 2003, which is located closer to the more expensive part of town and is a larger store with a wider range of product. Still, this means casually driving over to the store for a minor item is a more weighty decision, especially for the older residents.

324 The way a band is remembered can be affected by geography and how deep into the scene you are. Some bands were huge in the UK and much less so in the US. I think Duran Duran had already kind of peaked with their native market before they really became a household name in the US.

Likewise, Nirvana was a critical darling before most casual listeners had heard a single track. That was also the case with Blondie, who were big in NYC for a couple years before achieving national fame. Early on, they could share a marquee with Talking Heads but later were not considered to be in the same genre.

I remember almost none of my contemporaries having any familiarity with Mott the Hoople. Their older sibling might remember the name, largely for 'All the Young Dudes' but not know any of the material that had charted in the UK. Given, they burned out early while building their US audience, with Ian Hunter being hospitalized for exhaustion and semi-retiring for a while. I only knew the band because my older brother had been a fan and had most of their albums.

Most other artists at the time had videos that were basically them shot on a stage while Duran Duran had concept videos. Add in that they were not unattractive, and that the "New Wave" genre was hitting big at the time, and there was no way that they were going to not be big.

Eric Carmen had about three big hits by Rachmaninoff. Catchy tunesmith, Sergei.

And Lazenby may be everybody's fluffin' bitch, but of all the Bond actors (except the first one, Barry Nelson) he was the only one to serve in the military -- a judo instructor in the Australian army. Oh, of course there's David Niven, one of the dozen Bonds in the first "Casino Royale" film, a parody. Niven has the last line in the movie, about how you may have to do spycraft to save your country in wartime but it's nothing to get all carried away about. And he would know. He commanded a commando of commandos, in H.M. service.

I was talking to Joffen a while back on the telephone, and it seemed to intrigue him how many morons I've met IRL. What's more, I have yet to have an unpleasant experience with one -- it's like a secret network of fine, decent people [who drink Val-u-rite and hunt hoboes]. And, while there is certainly a problem with population density (hint: if you can't see the smoke from your neighbor's fireplace, you're probably more than an hour away from other morons), it does seem like there are morons everywhere.

Since I've had such pleasant experiences, I'd hope that every moron could make it to a meet sometime -- and so was hoping to find out if Ed was near someone who was seeking same.

364 i would say that Duran Duran's stardom was based more on the fact that they had their "big break" when MTV first started getting big. Most other artists at the time had videos that were basically them shot on a stage while Duran Duran had concept videos.

Add in that they were not unattractive, and that the "New Wave" genre was hitting big at the time, and there was no way that they were going to not be big.

They did A-ok for themselves and their success can't be knocked. However, my recollection of the times, which admittedly could be way, way off, though was in the thick of it at the time, is that Duran Duran's REAL influence, musically and stylistically, was quite early on, during the very early 80's, when they were still very much overshadowed by others, when they were relative up and comers.

By the the time the mid 80's rolled around and they were a top line act, Duran Duran were again overshadowed, not necessarliy by bigger acts, but by others that had taken that style to another level. It's kind of hard to describe how it panned out without a long wall of text about this stuff... But, they just never managed to stand above everyone else, really, for one reason or another... Good as they were at what they did.

410 So many times I say to myself, "Is it just me? Am I the only one who sees this? Am I over-reacting?" So, does anyone else find themselves, daily, reading and wondering, "What the heck happened?" or is it just me? Am I the only one who looks and feels like he's just woken up from ten years in a nightmare? The thought that the president is going to use Marxist agitation - again - against the American people so that his Marxist-admiring friends in the media can rile up the "masses" to do his bidding - it makes me want to puke. Because I know what is next - oppression, murder, gulags, and the knife in the back and the boot in the door in the middle of the night. And there are people who congratulate themselves on pushing it. Is it just me? Am I the only one who sees this, really happening now sees this? Does anyone else remember how Americans would be first to GLASS a country that tried to enslave us with Marxism? Does anyone else remember the existential threat it is? Doesn't anyone remember evil? Why isn't anyone saying anything about being enslaved and how to resist? Why isn't the IRS, EPA, and the FBI filled with arrests in the corridors and expose's in the press? Are we going to walk meekly forward as they brand our thighs and weld chains to our ankles? Is the whip and lash going to be our sole contact from our "government", or is there a way out?

412 Regardless if they call it Common Core or whatever - you as parents need to on their asses.

We have a small group here the reads everything our kids are getting in next year - every workbook, every new text book, every BS update from the publishers.  Takes 2-4 concerned parents per class -- then write recommendations as a group to fix things.  So 1) don't bitch on your own, they will just write you off as a whacko, 2) don't just identify problems - offer course of action to move forward, if you just identify problems for the bureaucracy it will never get fixed (and this a parochial school where we write big checks, God help you in public school), 3) sweat the small stuff, the shear volume of simple errors gives you gravitas - don't get too hung up in broad issues, and 4) have a doomsday plan for stuff must be fixed. As in, we're taking items 3, 7, and 12 to the Bishop on ..., and Sister we've invited you and the pastor to come along to kiss his ring.

After a year or so, the text book guys will be sending their reps to talk to you about their reconciliation process.  Then the fun starts.

Just like everyone says, it is liberally coated with red goo, so I have mini-projects up the yazoo -- "clean red goo off table", "clean red goo off column", "clean red goo off controls".... It came with it's drill chuck (which people assure me is crap) installed, and you can't even grip it to pull it out.....'cause it's covered in red goo.

To really be cool, you're supposed to do things like "polish the gibs" and "tram the table" before you start working with it. My intention is to use it to build simple things earlier-on that are less damaged by slop, while knowing that I can "tune-out" slop later.

I can sympathize. I just got over a disease that had me down most of the week. The annoying part is how many days were just a hacking cough that wouldn't have kept me from working if the site this week were not a medical facility. The issue comes down to whether there is an official language and whether there any existing law on the governments obligations to supply documents in anything other than that tongue. I suspect Cameron is just grandstanding, as it's about three decades late to establish such a rule.

off of the vinyl Brain Salad Surgery from ELP or Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

507 I remember reading, when Washington hanged Westley Allan Dodd in 1993, a quote from his lawyer. He watched the hanging, a two story setup in full view of the witnesses. He commented that it was a quick death, a drop, a jerk and it was done. Lethal injection (before the problem with a shortage of drugs), took far longer. The gas chamber was the worst way to go, and could cause harm to the guards who had to remove the corpse, as well as witnesses if the seals leaked. The electric chair works, and should still be used. After all, it is a 'green' method as the chair is reusable. So I vote for firing squad, hanging, or the electric chair. Of course, some of the condemned, based on their cries, should be hanged, drawn and quartered. But that wouldn't pass muster as being 'cruel and unusual'. It's only unusual precisely because we don't use it.

516 457 Yeah, I havent been reading them much lately either, but this is an absolutely outstanding post: http://gatesofvienna.net/2014/01/bearing-true-faith-and-allegiance/ --------------------------- Rickl, thanks for the link. Excellent article from a blog I haven't the heart to read anymore. When I was a kid, I loved to pore over my father's huge art book on the works of Norman Rockwell. I was thankfully too young to know he was a mere illustrator, and saw his work as a continuation of the Masters he so revered, though with average Americans as models, not contented Dutch burghers. My father was an artist in the style of Henri Rousseau, and it galled him to no end as a representational artist to read the fatuous articles on the art world coming out of New York and Europe. Did they succeed in breaking the chain? I'm optimistic, in that they are now more of a blip on the timeline than people like Rockwell. There was a Rockwell retrospective at the Detroit Institute of Arts a few years back. Each of his paintings and prints were accompanied by Art School hack commentary on his sanitized, middle class aspirational view of America. The patrons rightly snickered and just enjoyed the artwork.
