— Open Blogger CDR M is off this evening pursuing his dream of becoming an Olympic ice dancer. He claims he was inspired, not by the strength and grace of Olympics-quality competition, but by Johnny Weir's flair for fashion. Who can blame him? Johnny is f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s!
He did however, drop by to remind us that Curling is too a sport, and provided a video of some of the most tension-filled moments of icy shuffleboard Curling ever witnessed.
Behold the magic:
Speaking of fashion, Rodarte's Fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection just kills it. It draws from the designer's own individual creativity and is designed for only the most discriminating of tastes.
I say this with my tongue planted firmly in cheek.
These ready-to-wear dresses, intended to be accessible to a larger-than-couture consumer market, defy logic. The kind of woman who might wear such a dress, hoping to make a statement, will certainly feel less an individual when several other such rebels show up in the same, or similar, dress. A gimmick such as this only works once: Perhaps on a red carpet or at a movie premier.
But. Wait. They aren't for sale? You mean they showed dresses at a RTW fashion show that won't even be available for purchase? So, the one measure of success of this gimmick is exactly what they anticipated: A massive amount of press coverage. It seems the press never tires of being manipulated. Slow clapping here, Rodarte. Slow clapping, indeed.

Beware the Mexican flavor rice. And the chicken, garlic, cheese, and Spanish infused rice products as well.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating the illnesses of children in three states in recent months that have been linked to Uncle Ben's infused rice served in schools. The cluster of illnesses have affected children in Texas, Illinois and North Dakota. At three schools in Katy, Texas, 34 students and four teachers experienced skin reactions, burning, headaches and nausea last week after eating Uncle Ben's "Mexican flavor" infused rice.
The symptoms lasted about 90 minutes, officials said.

Crocodiles can climb straight up trees! Except that, yeah, they don't. I am a native Floridian and have seen literally hundreds of alligators in my lifetime of which probably half were perched on low-lying limbs or fallen trees. So, upon seeing this headline I was SHOCKED to learn that they can climb-straight-up-trees. Holy crap! This means that when boating in the local rivers and streams I mustn't just scan the water and the banks, but the ckufing tree limbs above me too?!
It turns out that this Herpetological study was a product of the Psychology Department of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, so... Huh? Secondly, despite their claims that small Crocodilians can climb "straight up a brick wall" the only photos the study offers to prove their climbing prowess are those that myself and thousands of others have taken throughout the years: Alligators on low-slung or horizontal branches.
The difficulty of climbing something is proportional to the steepness of the slope, the smoothness of the surface being climbed, the agility of the animal to help direct the body upwards and secure a grip, and the strength of the animal relative to its weight. Climbing a steep hill and climbing a tree branch are mechanically similar assuming the branch is wide enough to walk on, and especially if that branch grows at an angle, as those of certain tree species tend to be when overhanging water. In theory a wide range of animals can climb trees if the branches are wide enough and the angle is shallow enough. Juvenile crocodilians can do not just that, but also climb on relatively thin, vertical branches that have to be gripped from the sides, or even across multiple branches using them as a ladder and lifting the body vertically. The ability to climb vertically (as long as footholds are available) is a measure of crocodiliansÂ’ spectacular agility on land and their ability to pull the body along an angled surfaceÂ…
Beware the dreaded tree-climbing alligator.

Paula Deen looks to make a comeback from that unfortunate PR debacle last year and it seems that someone believes in her enough to sink a hefty sum of cash into her enterprise. Here's to a brighter future.

I-Pads for all... students. Los Angeles Unified School District has launched a massive, and controversial, $1B program to outfit 749 schools with wi-fi and provide a shiny new I-Pad to each student in the district. Thus far, it's gone about as well as you might expect: cost overruns, delayed implementation, and questions as to whether the students will even be allowed to take the devices home with them at the end of the day. Folks are, understandably, upset:
But itÂ’s easy to understand why so many administrators, teachers and parents arenÂ’t iPad fans yet. Some mistakes are inevitable in a venture this new. But the number and types of mistakes have been discouraging, perhaps even somewhat alarming. The district was paying too much at first, and for curriculum of uncertain value. It hadnÂ’t nailed down what would happen when Apple rolled out newer iPad models, which the computer company did only months after the first phase of the rollout began. It didnÂ’t examine whether high school students might be better off with laptops, or take a comprehensive inventory of existing technology at its schools. And now the Wi-Fi part of the project might cost $300 million more than expected?
It's no secret that Miley Cyrus is a little bit screwed up. Her recent interview in 'W' magazine is certainly something to behold. I learned that she has 21 tattoos, likes being seen as a provocative, although she claims it is calculated and she, uh, likens herself to Madonna, Blondie, and Joan Jett. Oh, yes she did! Unfortunately, that segment of the interview is so fraught with the language of drunken sailors that I might lose my blog privileges if I excerpt it here. Instead, there's this:
But fame brought increasingly harsh judgment. In 2008, a 15-year-old Cyrus scandalized her audience by wearing what appeared to be nothing but a sheet in photographs shot by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair. (“I feel so embarrassed,” Cyrus said at the time. “I apologize to my fans, who I care so deeply about.”) The following year, a video of her pole dancing at an awards show prompted a collective clutching of pearls. Not long after, she found herself in the headlines again when a videotape of her taking a hit from a bong made the rounds online.
BUT WAIT!
I think we might have found the source of Miley's screwed up sense of self-esteem and longing to be viewed as a sexual being.
I present, dear old dad:
How to become a professional complainer: Ya know, sometimes, it just isn't worth time and effort but, you go girl! You get your complainin' on.
Tonight's ONT brought to you by a girl who knows there is no substitute:

Crank, you shooting inside 200 yards, and in brush? I'd go with a .308...a nice lever action with iron sights.
I have an older Marlin in 30-30 and it makes short work of feral hogs and deer. Never tried to shoot an elk though. Probably want to bump a couple of sizes for that.

Okay, I finally tried out my Presto deep fryer. I made OreIda crinkle fries and buffalo wings using Wesson veggie oil. Long story short, my mistakes were that I undercooked the fries very slightly and overcooked the wings. I would grade myself a B- on this first endeavor. Both were still edible and somewhat enjoyable.
Having said that, I was very careful about making sure everything was clean and dry before it went into the fryer; and about taking my time. Good learning experience though. Still hoping to be up to snuff enough to be frying Mars Bars for the eventual SoCal moron meetup.
Thanks to all for all the tips and help on using the fryer. Only one question remains: can the oil go down the drain, or will it solidify and clog up the kitchen sink??

Mostly people save and reuse, until it's bad.

Please don't misunderstand; I wasn't pointing out a reason for you to refrain from adjusting your trigger but, rather, providing rationale for such a trigger to exist. You not being able to hit your target as-is certainly helps no one! I'm interesting in hearing how it works out.
It may be due to my giant meat hooks, but I've found that I have difficulty flipping the relatively tiny safety lever off post-draw with the intention of aiming from the hip and then moving into a standard shooting posture. I practice those motions regularly and I just feel as though I'm going to fumble and drop the damn thing if the safety is on.

This is exactly how I felt about the S and W Bodyguard 380 that I sold prior to procurring the Ruger LC380. The safety is flush to the slide and it nearly takes a sturdy thumbnail to manipulate it. I left it disengaged for this reason.
I found the LC380 safety to be much easier to operate, although I worked mine some to loosen it up. It just comes natural to me carrying a 1911 with a round chambered.

>> how to make crude diesel fuel from cooking grease
IIRC the original diesel engine ran on peanut oil.
Making biodiesel is very easy, big concerns are:
High FFA content of used oil will eat up the methoxide catalyst
High moisture in used oil will eat up the methoxide catalyst
You need a source of methanol (approx 10% by weight to you starting oil amount)
Methoxide catalyst can be bought, but it is highly caustic
Make sure there are no flame / spark sources nearby.
Getting rid of the highly caustic glycerine can be a PITA.
You will need to waterwash the biodiesel after the separation phase, then get rid of the caustic wash water
BUT with all that being said, the reaction occurs very quickly, at room temperature, and the glycerine settles out from the biodiesel nicely.
Tends to burn a little hotter than straight diesel, so blending is recommended

Once I'm in an optimal shooting stance, I don't find the LC-9's safety lever arduous. It's just that draw->safety off->rotate muzzle forward motion that confounds me. I did go through that same motion with my R1 using the great holster I got from awkward davies (plug plug plug) and I could disengage the safety without issue. But, then, it's a 1911. It's supposed to just work.

Funny you should ask. Had a nice conversation with the BH today about it, and it sounds like we'll be doing a little road-trip around the South in late March.
It's not exactly the area I'm most interested in, but.....well, the BH grew up in NYC, and y'know that famous New Yorker cover? Intellectually, she knows there is stuff out there -- but viscerally, she has her doubts. After seeing my mom give my dad a hard time about "moving her out to the sticks", anything I can do to make the BH comfortable in advance would be a big plus.

I've been hunting for decades, and I find that the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser round is sufficient for any game in the lower 48. Yes, shot placement matters the most, and projectile selection is a close second.
Without getting all scienctificky about it, the 6.5 class of projectiles offers both the highest sectional density and ballistic coefficient, on average, per bullet weight, when compared to it's nearest competitors in the quarter bore (.243, 6mm) bullets, or the .30 caliber family.
Mild recoil, great at bucking wind, better external ballistics past 400 yards than the .308, and absolutely game-wrecking terminal ballistics. That great sectional density leads directly to devastating penetration effects, even when breaking bone to do so.
And, I'll 2nd the vote for the Howa 1500 rifles. Tremendous bargains, those. But, if you can find a CZ-550 in a configuration you like? Unbeatable, and in the same price range. Either will do you a ton of good, buy the one that feels best to you.
But up your scope budget to $400, if you would, and you'll thank me later. The difference between say, a Nikon Pro-Staff, and a Nikon Monarch, is WAY greater than the $200 difference between the two scopes.
Another great scope in the $400 range, is the Vortex line of hunting scopes. Incredible bargains for dollar spent. Their tactical scopes can break the $2k barrier though, so shop carefully.
Leupold Mk II is a great hunting scope, usually in the $300/$400 range. You might find a MkIII in the low $400s, maybe a shop sample or such.
Spend at least as much on the optics as you do on the rifle.

I'd recommend spending more on the glass and less on the gun, esp. in a common caliber like 30-06. Since your a novice, its hard to recommend a specific rifle. Be prepared that your first buy may not be your last. As you shoot a bit you may find the ergonomics of one rifle or the carry weight versus felt recoil will lead you to trade one in for another. You can always move a good scope to your new rifle.
An older, used bolt action with a good trigger might be a better start then a new gun. The local hunting laws and customs may drive the price and availability of 30-06 rifles, where are you?

We generally don't put any fats/oils down a drain that are not already freely liquid at normal ambient temperature for our area.
Two ways they get disposed of around here:
(a) Dropped off as solidified gunk in jars at household hazmat [may or may not be a feature of your local area, but ours are happy to take it], or,
(b) Burned as additional fuel atop a hot fire in the back yard. Often creates yummy smells. ("What are you barbecuing?" ---- "Um, nothing.")
Two other thoughts come to mind:
-- Smalltime biodiesel producers will love you long time.
-- I am anecdotally informed that if you have various barnyard fauna, heating the fats in question and presoaking the animal feeds is well received. We don't have barnyard critters because we have many highly active predators all the way up to _Felis concolor_ level round here.

I'm a fan of the .270, one of the great hunting calibers.
As for .300 WinMag, why stop there? Go to the .375 H-and-H.
"Murder at both ends," as the old saying has it. You will want a recoil pad.
Recoil-sensitive people need to carefully gauge their choice of calibers and cartridges. Differently for each class of firearm. I am utterly insensitive to big rifle rounds, but am very much so to bantamweight pistol rounds. Go figure.

CC, I'd see if you could go shooting with someone who has a rifle in the calibers you are looking into.
Most guys who are into the shooting thing will be more than happy to help you out.
Contact any shooting ranges in your area, and they will either be willing to work with you, or guide you to someone who will.

How about we make it more specific - base of either concrete gray or asphalt black with lines of white and yellow and random splotches for suicidal squirrels, skunks, possums and the ebony rubber streaks left by those trying to avoid said suicidal wildlife? Add a trim of deer, dog, and cat, and it is a true representation of the American road.
Said I was getting drunk.

C. Crank. The CZ-550 American is a great choice. Before the tragic canoe accident, I had a CZ-500 Mannlicher, somewhat an esoteric choice, but one I truly blended with.
The correct choice is the one that "fits" right when you shoulder it and operate the action. It's as personal a choice as is a pair of shoes.
I can suggest and recommend great mechanical accomplishments in the world of firearms. I can rate them according to relative quality, reputation and other factors.
But, I cannot tell you which one is "right" for you. Only you can do that.
I can solidly back the Howa 1500 rifles, anything by CZ, and for the money, it's hard to beat Savage's offerings. I can't vouch for the Ruger American, as I've no direct dealings with it. Ruger makes good stuff, though.
6.5x55 Swede will be harder to find than .30-'06. Same action length though. You won't go wrong with the '06, you'll just get a bit more recoil.
Among the recommendations down through this thread.....just find the rifle that makes you go "yeah", every time you draw a bead with it. Odds are, that'll be the one you get the best results with, too.
Don't skimp on the scope though. Not even a little bit. If you have to "suffer" in the budget, buy a good used rifle, to allow you the headroom to buy a truly superior scope.

It will certainly be infinitely harder to find ammo for it on a random backwoods bait shop's ammo shelf. Or in an SHTF scenario.
There is a lot to be said for standardization.
In the 1990s, I helped a friend shoot some inherited half-century-old ought-six back stock of ammo. It did the job. Nicely. I doubt we would have been finding any ballistically meritorious but rare Swedish calibers sitting around.

Linux Mint.
I've run umpteen different distributions of Linux over the years.
I have very little tolerance for operating systems which require me to manually probe for, and configure, devices from the command line, which is how Linux has traditionally worked.
There is something to be said for one that boots immediately and perfectly to a desktop on random hardware. The last time I tried that, the ONLY thing I had to do to get the machine functional was to select one of the wireless networks which Mint had found, and type in a key. That was it.
Everything else, smooth as silk autosensed and autoconfigured.
And many fewer security hassles.

The .257 Roberts is perhaps the perfect coyote and whitetail gun. Even good on mulies, and the right bullet and shooter make for good elk medicine.
Black Hills ammo makes some spectacular ammo, including the .257 Roberts. Get you some.
That said, the 6.5x55 Swede goes just that extra bit more, in terms of range and versatility. Neither is a bad choice. Oddly, the 6.5x55 Swede isn't all that hard to find in commercial loadings, either. It's nowhere near an "exotic", and is in fact, in rather common supply in most non Wal Mart emporiums.
And, Garrett? Thanks, mate. If that Ruger is a Mk. 1, with the tang safety, I"m interested. If it's a Mk. II with the faux "Pre '64 Win, 3 position safety" mounted on the receiver, rather than the bolt-shroud where God and Winchester ordained..... I'll respectfully pass.
And if it's a tang-safety RSI Mannlicher...... I'll swoon.

I learned that from a Robert Louis Stevenson. I think he was still a professional six-year-old even if he did go and do grown-up things.

While you may well be right, I think you over estimate people's ability to think out their voting decisions. A lot of people just pull the lever (are there still lever based voting machines?) rather than carefully consider how their choice may affect their jobs.
I mean, President Obama was elected, twice.

If they did vote for those nincompoops, they deserve any misfortune they encounter.
I doubt there are any lever-based voting machines left....hell, there were hardly any pull-arm mechanical slot-machines when I was last in Vegas, and there are probably none today.
Incidentally, I once worked with a relation -- I think grand-niece -- of the guy who invented the slot machine.

When we do, it will all be about the tactical retreat to CONUS.
Hawai'i will be sacrificed as a jump ball for the Japanese and Chicoms to fight over as a necessary temporary distraction, Senkakus style. As will Guam.
We'll sell Alaska to Canada for a fair return on the initial investment of the purchase from the Russians.
Then later on, forcibly annex Canada.
After that we will dust off the real long range master plan.
The islands will be taken back eventually, have no fear. Bwahahahaha!

OK -- I posted a link to the obit here: http://tinyurl.com/p6zxb97 . You already know the sister found me off the police report. After I showed her some things, she found this by herself and thinks that my concerns about the website being found accidentally by some 9-year-old protogeek cousin were completely overdone....but IMHO, the other cautions do apply. If you use a particular junk gmail account, the sister won't waste any time to write thank-yous or anything -- and that's x998b5d16....you are, of course, welcome to use an actual name and actual email, or even your own preferred bogus email (???), if you wish. The sister is the only one who sees the emails that the site requires.
She has been remarkably accepting of our weird little world here, but she's also the gatekeeper for the family and moderates the comments before they're visible. And she knows how to get ahold of me in case I need to let anyone know that something crossed a line.

A Fox News poll finds that 64% of Americans say Obamacare would have never passed if citizens knew back in 2009 what they know now about the law.
Interestingly, the somber sentiment garnered majorities from Republicans (74%), independents (68%), and Democrats (54%), who say the unpopular health care program would not have passed.
The poll also found that just 9% of Americans believe their family is better off under Obamacare.
