Bad Day For Unions

Despite no opposition from management the UAW still couldn't convince Tennessee VW workers to unionize.

The United Auto Workers Union suffered a devastating defeat on Friday, when its attempt to organize the workers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga failed on a vote of 712-626 (53-47 percent). The company had agreed not to resist the organizing effort and gave the union access to the plant and its workers. If the union couldn't win an election under those conditions, it is a powerful sign of how weak, indeed toxic, unions have become in recent years. If the UAW couldn't win this election, it seems doubtful it can win any election.

Well sure join up with the UAW if you love what they've done to Detroit car manufacturing.

Plus it turns out that even at the height of union membership it wasn't close to a majority of US workers.

But they have become increasingly weak everywhere. In the early 1950s union membership in the private sector peaked at about 35 percent of the work force. Today it is about 6 percent.

At the current rate we'll soon have more gays than private sector union members.

Even Punkers Get the California Blues

According to Reason magazine Exene Cervenka of the L.A. punk band, X, is moving to Texas because California has become 'A Liberal Oppressive Police State and Regulations and Taxes and Fees.'.

...when I moved to California in 1976, Jerry Brown was governor. It was barefoot hippie girls, Hell's Angels on the Sunset Strip, East L.A. lowriders, the ocean and nature. It was this fabulous incredible place about freedom. Now when I think about California, I think of a liberal oppressive police state and regulations and taxes and fees. I'd rather go someplace and have my own little place out on the edge of town. I'm a country girl at heart. It makes me happy when I see people in Texas open-carrying. It makes me feel safe. I'm not even a gun owner, but I'd like to see a gun rack in every pickup truck, like my boyfriend had when I was fifteen years old in Florida. An armed society is a polite society."

She cracks a smile. "Now Jerry Brown's governor again. He's done some great things, like balancing the budget and libraries are open on Sundays. But things are getting to the point in this country where people are going to have to fight to survive and fight for their rights."

And more Gone-to-Texas: California's Leaders Are Watching the Wealthy's Movements

Since over 40% of California's income tax revenues now come from the top 1% of tax filers, the state is nervously watching to see if the frogs will jump out of the pot after the top state tax rate was jacked to 13.3%.

Lee Schneider, a hedge fund salesman who works from home, also cited Prop. 30 as the "deciding factor" for his move from Walnut Creek to Austin, Texas, in 2012. The California native had recently built a $2 million house at the foot of Mount Diablo and took a loss on the sale, but "I can make half of it back in one year of tax savings," he says.

Schneider's neighborhood in Texas, which has no state income tax, is full of cars with license-plate frames from California dealerships. On a flight from Austin to Los Angeles shortly before Christmas, 11 of the 12 seats in the emergency row were occupied by people who had moved from California to Texas, he says.

Another ObamaCare Success: It Costs Hawaii $56,819 To Sign Up Each Enrollee

At that price why not just give them a free health care plan AND a new car.

How much does it cost taxpayers to sign up one ObamaCare enrollee? In President Obama's home state of Hawaii, it's $56,819.

The Obama administration gave Hawaii $205 million in grants over the past three years to set up its state-run exchange. But so far, only 3,614 Hawaiians have filled out applications - just 40% of the state's enrollment goal.

Thomas Frank Still Doesn't Get Kansas

But these days he's damn bitter about it and still can't quite accept the idea that conservative ideas better reflect the views of KS working people than those of the liberal elite.

For the ruling faction of the Democratic party, meanwhile, I felt like the Kansas story triggered a bout of guilty conscience. To begin with, there was something true at the core of all the conservative bullshit: we really are ruled by a meritocratic, professional elite - just look at the members of the president's cabinet, or who gets interviewed on NPR - and a great number of meritocratic believers really are found in the ranks of the Democrats. As a party, they are openly in love with expertise; it is who they are; it means more to them than any ideology. It's the awful story of "The Best and the Brightest" repeating itself over and over and over again.

Dum and Dumer: The David Frum Story

Frum's transition to full-on liberal continues. Full-on gun control advocacy - check.

Hypothesis: the people who most want to carry are the very last people on earth who should be allowed to carry.

Mass murderer Anders Breivik Threatens Hunger Strike Unless He Gets Newer, Better Video Games

Okay his offer is accepted.

Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik threatened to go on hunger strike for better video games and other perks to alleviate his "torture"-like prison conditions, in a letter received by AFP Friday. .

...He also demanded the replacement of a PlayStation 2 games console for a more recent PS3 "with access to more adult games that I get to choose myself" as well as a sofa or armchair instead of a "painful" chair.

Sochi: The Driest Olympics Ever?

So Russia is dealing with their alcohol problem by making it difficult for visiting foreigners to have a drink.

Russia, whose most famous export may be vodka, is staging the driest Olympics in memory. For many fans, it is the biggest upset of the Winter Games. A new federal law last year prohibited the sale of alcohol inside sports stadiums and arenas. And a local ordinance last month banned alcohol sales within 50 meters of some sports venues.

...Alcohol sales restrictions were a deterrent to potential beer sponsors. Heineken was the official beer of the London and Athens Summer Games but had never sponsored the Winter Olympics. "I must say that, Sochi, we weren't too keen to become the sponsor of the Winter Olympics," and alcohol restrictions were one consideration, said Hans Erik Tuijt, the company's Global Director of Activation.

42 Hollywood Was Always Hollywood Shirley Temple Black passed away this month. She was not only an accomplished child actress, but a well respected U. S. Ambassador. With Dylan Farrow accusing Woody Allen of molesting her, or Roman Polanski‘s infamous rape of a minor, Shirley Temple’s time in Hollywood makes one pine for the days before people like Allen or Polanski could act with seeming impunity. Alas, a N. Y. 52 "Despite no opposition from management the UAW still couldn't convince Tennessee VW workers to unionize." When foreign car companies started building auto plants here, if it hadn't been for the UAW, Michigan should have gotten those plants. Michigan had everything they needed in place. Experienced automotive engineers, automotive management, marketing people, colleges specializing in automotive engineering, laborers, transportation, parts manufacturers salivating over new customers. The one negative was the UAW, with their mentality of "screw the company". Back when GM was thriving and UAW workers were the most over-paid unskilled workers on the planet, you should have heard the way they talked about their jobs and "Generous Motors". I would listen to GM workers talk about how, if they did piece work, they could get their quota done so easily that they had hours to waste. And the union prevented the plant from increasing the quotas. They deliberately kept the assembly lines slow. So in the seventies and eighties, college educated Michiganders, who earned less then unskilled GM workers, bought Japanese cars with no remorse. The big 3 started moving toward robotics, and built more and more plants out of the country. My brother's ex-father in law was plant manager of a GM plant that was in Mexico. He and his family lived in Texas, I believe El Paso. The UAW members with seniority have screwed over members with less seniority so that they can keep what they have at the expense of younger workers. The UAW cut their own throats, now they want to inflict the same damage on other auto companies. The employees in Tennessee are to smart to fall for it.

68 I've been watching the Jeremy Irons / secular-Turk 2004 documentary on the Hittites. It's quite good. It even looks at the commoners (the high-point of the HBO "Rome" series).

Now, since we've all been teased with the geography of Anatolia and the glimpses of everyday Bronze Age life - can we please have a live-action update of the "Red River" manga?

We can keep the cute Japanese (or Korean) time-traveling actress to explain it all for modern audiences. I am willing to concede on that. It'll be hard - I mean, I will find it difficult, but I can make the sacrifice.

For the remaining Cons in California, we're like the Jews after the Fall of the Temple.  We keep the faith in our hearts and homes.

Outside of urban San Bernardino City, there were no Dem Congress members outside of central L.A., with a large number of GOPers in L.A. County. The GOP would win statewide races using the "fishhook" where they would get all the inland counties and then get Orange, San Diego, and the conservative L.A suburbs lilke a fishhook. They rolled over some debt. Also they actually had to cut billions from the state budget after they didn't get their first tax increase vote in 2010, which helped them move back to black. The state seized redevelopment agency funds I think last year. Even though the state budget has improved, local budgets are still in deep trouble.

Did Cali really balance their budget?
Posted by: Biff Boffo

Technically -- for a couple of years because of:

Federal aid flowing in.  Obamacare start-up grant, Medicaid expansion slush, our Magic Choo Choo and so on.

And the state passed a retroactive -- nice touch that -- tax increase on the upper incomes that they couldn't escape.

But the current budget forecast has the state turning turtle by next year.

152 At that price why not just give them a free health care plan AND a new car.

They're just paying themselves off with taxpayer money which will eventually lower the standard of living for all Americans.  Well, at least those who didn't get part of the pay off.

Paying millions for jobs/contracts that might maybe in a dream push $100,000 isn't about helping citizens.  Its a slush fund.

157 106 so, quick question, if you were a dictator and you were also a thief, wouldn't you have a plan for building a snow sports resort somewhere where there was snow, you know so you could get your kickbacks and make a profit after the olympics? Posted by: yankeefifth at February 16, 2014 11:19 PM (rDidD) First, I wouldn't build a winter sports complex close to a summer beach resort since that is what Sochi is. It would be like the US having the Winter Olympics in Myrtle Beach. If you watched any of the cross country skiing, the "athletes village" is a bunch of cottages that they built to house the athletes, and they will go on sale after the Olympics. I would bet that a bunch of Putin's cronies will be snatching those things up. The weather there has been about 10 degrees above normal this February, so the snow hasn't been what they hoped, and there hasn't been the usual snowfall this season.

One year I was there, we had a couple of 12 inch snowstorms within a couple days of each other, we still went to classes, but the dining hall started to run out of food after about a week, and meals became a real crapshoot. When you got in line it was pizza, when you got your food, it was tacos, then the guys behind you got beef stroganoff. They didn't run out of cereal, so there's that.

Posted by: lindafell at February 16, 2014 11:32 PM (PGO8C)

A couple of factors:

1) Urban areas have a specific set of problems which legitimately require collective action (sanitation, crime, defense, water/power).  It appeals to the nannys and the collectivists and gives them a way to get their foot in the door.

2) Prior to the industrial revolution, most urban areas were centered around the seats of power.  After the industrial revolution urban areas grew as centers for manufacturing and industry.  In both cases they quickly attracted or developed people with specialized training.  However, these specialists traded increased knowledge in one area for a lack of knowledge in others.  This, combined with the modern industrial hierarchy, led to the progressive belief that society could be organized along the lines of a factory, where each person was a specialist filling a role and everything was overseen by supervisors and technocrats.

350 Some of you might remember a while back when the unused icemaker feed behind the refrigerator in my home's kitchen started leaking. It was fixed and the laminate flooring that had been installed just a few months ago was ruined. But it was over for the moment. The valve was replaced and it appeared the water had dried up.

Not so much. Today, we noticed there was a squishy noise when walking around that part of the kitchen. If you pressed down on the boards near where the tile began water would squirt out. It's difficult to say what is happening. Did the warmer weather cause the water spilled before to rise up? Is there another leak somewhere? We've toweled up a lot of water but it doesn't seem to decrease. Yet there isn't enough to come up between the boards, just to squeeze out where the flooring changes. This is worrisome to say the least.

If it's laminate over slab.....y'know what? Trying to decision-tree this is a lot of effort, 90% of which will be worthless. Let me just go for the basics. If you've got water, it's because it's not draining or is continuously getting more. It could not drain on top of the subfloor (bad if the subfloor is wood 'cause it will rot; not quite as bad if the subfloor is concrete); it could not drain over the moisture barrier (bad, 'cause it'll eat your laminate from beneath), or it could be getting more (bad....er.....just "bad").

Posted by: cthulhu at February 16, 2014 09:54 PM (T1005)

410 406 This reminds me a lot of the melamine milk issue in China a few years ago. It looks like you have two things possibly working here (or some combination of them): 1) Really, really poor quality control. Either not taking enough samples to test to check quality or a complete disregard for testing of products before shipment. 2) Intentionally changing/adulterating the product to affect cost. That seemed to be the case from what I read on the melamine thing. Now both of these things come back to trying to strengthen the bottom line.

OK I just watched the full 33 min video. Here are my takes

Ramos  - knew Thomas from daily interactions

Thomas - was verbally non compliant, just as almost everyone who lives on the street and deals with cops daily is but there is never any physical or verbal threat posed to  Ramos  or others

Ramos  escalated the interaction with verbal abuse and threats of physical violence

Thomas only tries to flee when first hit by Ramos

You try acting like Ramos, and you go to jail for a long time,  he hides behind a shield and gets a pass because a jury so often believes that the cop is trustworthy.

Thomas may have had a history of previous violent outbursts, but did nothing to cause the beat down that night.

422 Couple of random items - I once read about a Russian Bride who was extremely well-educated, and used the system as a way to escape the lack of respect that she felt she'd obtain in Russia. I suspect that's not exactly common, though. Regarding Brown's "balanced" budget, what's scary is that Brown is probably the sanest Dem in Sacramento right now. The Dems in the Legislature seem to think that he's a miser. Things are a mess in the state right now, with the inevitable budget collapse, and the current drought problems. The drought's due to a mass of hot air sitting just off the coast that's keeping most of the moisture from reaching the state. If something doesn't change real fast, it's possible that we could see a bit of a demographic shift in a hurry as people flee the state for wetter climes. No one in the US wants to be told that they have to ration their water.

426 The story was covered in a lot of places besides the LA Times. Kelly Thomas's father did a lot of radio appearances, for one. There is no doubt that Kelly Thomas was an ongoing problem but it is absurd that the cops involved with the tools at their disposal felt it was necessary to beat Thomas to death.

But it was just a matter of time before Thomas went up against someone who wasn't sympathetic to his condition and had greatly superior force on their side. That it was cops is what makes it remarkable.

But that reminds me of an item that caught my eye the other day. It appears that in an era when we've got a fair handle on infectious disease, a major portion of those ailments we remain helpless are increasingly found to be our immune system attacking ourselves. Now they've added a significant portion of schizophrenia cases to the list.

Again, I haven't really been following this case.....but I can well understand why cops might not fully react to someone saying he is smothering when he has enough air to gasp that out.

The bigger picture is -- the judicial system was meant to ensure that we could all say "I don't know so much of this, but twelve goodly men and true -- much like me -- have delved into this in great detail and found this to be so." But now we don't. We think they're politicized "others" duped by bullshit rules of evidence and professional frauds before the bar -- to say things no reasonable man might were he in possession of all the facts available.

I can't believe a juror thinks like me. I can't believe that he'll receive things properly sorted into "indisputably true, consider the source, and indisputably false". I can't believe the laws are anything more than constructs to enrich the favored and impoverish the disfavored. And I can't believe these things because I get evidence every day that they are false.

444 Seriously, the real problem is whether a jury can provide judicial closure.

Why should everything be retried in the media? Why should we second-guess juries?

And the answer is.....because both juries and media have become thoroughly corrupt.

Posted by: cthulhu at February 16, 2014 10:35 PM (T1005)

445 445 One affects the other. The point of the jury is you are trying to find jurors who either know nothing about the case or can act in a non-biased manner. Media works at cross purposes to that idea. They find a story that they want to cover (often choosing to portray the story in a very specific way) and then disseminate that view in the widest possible degree. Like the Zimmerman trial.

One of my big issues with this Thomas affair is how the cops acted.

They are supposed to be held to a higher standard than the general public when it comes to interaction with the public and violence in particular. Police officers recieve training in both of these areas. But what we see today is that they are held to no standards  and, as I said earlier,  get a pass far too often.

Many of us know at least one person who is not all there mentally for various reasons. These individuals all too often become mirrors of those they are interacting with. If you are a smartass to them - they will reflect this back to you and often amplify the same attitude.

Watching that video, I saw a person who was supposed to be responsible - act like a total douche, then become verbally and physically abusive. This was before the actual beating began.

508 Hypothesis: the people who most want to carry write political columns are the very last people on earth who should be allowed to carry write political columns.

As long as we're talking about stomping on other people's Constitutional rights, I wonder how douchenozzle David Frum would feel about this one?

Posted by: VelvetElvis at February 17, 2014 02:55 AM (hleDf)

509 So let’s get this straight: you give a kid $3,500, and in 60 years, at 5%, he has $700,000? Ornstein refers to “the miracle of compound interest,” but this would indeed be a miracle. A reader who is an expert in finance corrects the math:

Ornstein states that inequality can be alleviated through this mechanism because “…through the miracle of compound interest, they would represent a hefty nest egg. At 5 percent annual growth [sic], an individual would have almost $700,000.”

Now this struck me as highly implausible for a very simple reason. It was immediately and intuitively apparent to me that the numbers were — not slightly, not somewhat, not arguably — but wildly inaccurate. Anyone who has ever done even a bit of bond or loan math would, without any calculation, also immediately know that $1000+$500*5 (about $4,200 at 5%) over 60 years could not possibly accumulate to “almost $700,000” at “5% annual growth [sic]”. I calculated that with a 5% annual rate of return, even compounded continuously, the funds accumulate to only about $84,000, not even close: off by a factor of more than 8 times! In fact, it would require a 9% annual rate of return, 80% greater than assumed, compounded continuously, to accumulate $700,000. (It took about 30 seconds to run these numbers.)

This is not a trivial mistake like a proofreading oversight, or a quibble about arcane calculations or analysis.

537 Hymn-"When our confidence is shaken": The words and nice pictures; http://listentogrammie.blogspot.com/2009/08/when-our-confidence-is-shaken.html Few hymns of earlier centuries address crises of faith as those addressed in stanza one: "the spirit in sickness seeks but cannot find a cure." In stanza two, the author confronts the ultimate doubts: "our research leads us to the ultimate unknown." In a bold statement, Pratt Green concludes the stanza: Faith must die, or come full circle to its source in God alone. Stanza three encourages us to maintain the "discipline of praying, when itÂ’s hardest to believe." The final stanza states unequivocally: "God is love, and thus redeems us in the Christ we crucify." The author concludes that even in a crisis of faith . . . May we in this faith maturing be content to live and die! Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) was born at Roby, near Liverpool, England, and was ordained in 1928. He began writing hymns only in 1969 after retiring from active parish ministry. Despite his late start as a composer of hymn texts, he is known as one of the greatest hymn writers of the twentieth century. In fact, in the foreword to the first compilation of his hymns, The Hymns and Ballads of Fred Pratt Green (1982), he was acclaimed as the greatest Methodist hymn writer since Charles Wesley by eminent British hymnologist Erik Routley. It is likely that his success in hymn writing was built upon his experience as a poet throughout his career. This hymn, entitled "A Mature Faith," was first included in Pratt GreenÂ’s 26 Hymns (1971). This affirms a God active in our doubts and the source where questions of faith return full circle. A mature faith stems from our discipline, prayer, and acceptance of GodÂ’s redemptive act in Christ." I don't have a performance of this hymn but the words are so powerful I thought I'd post them anyway.

561 Re: Online Troll defined.

I have a talent.
What comments I post are subjective, dependent on the perceptions of the reader. Not being sarcastic but what is written, is not necessarily what he reader perceives. There are also language difficulties; the political left, and the political right speak two different incompatible versions of 'English'.

For example, when Obama says that he is trying to 'help the middle class' conservatives think to themselves, 'what does he mean by that?', since what conservatives see isn't what they would call 'help'. Obama believes that he really is 'helping' middle class America by employing them as serfs under his direction, teaching them what is good for them, and instructing his loyal followers to supervise the less intelligent conservatives (for the good of all mankind)

When Obama says he is going to use his executive privilege to 'help the middle class', they think Obama will reduce confusing and conflicting government regulations, outdated and infective government policies. The resulting confusion Obama says is because of the racial prejudiced of those he is trying to 'help' Anyone who can't understand the resulting discontent, animosity, and mistrust is clearly blinded by their own prejudice. That last makes me a troll, because if you do not agree, then I am a troll. Obviously.

Apparently, Sochi is a popular place for mass murderers to take summer vacays. http://bit.ly/1gv65wZ Stalins daughter lived for a number of years at the other end of my street, when I lived in Princeton. Way before my time, but I remember the older people on the street (it was probably before their times too, but hey) were always reminding you of the fact, like it was important or something.

Next Executive Order:  Obama declares himself as "President for Life" due to lack of positive declarations of what the Government can do to for you in the old dead Constitution and a balky Congress where certain people keep asking questions rather than going a long to get along.

580 The newspaper has also learned that Apple is heavily exploring medical devices, specifically sensor technology that can help predict heart attacks. Led by Tomlinson Holman, a renowned audio engineer who invented THX and 10.2 surround sound, Apple is exploring ways to predict heart attacks by studying the sound blood makes at it flows through arteries.

Taken together, Apple's potential forays into automobiles and medical devices, two industries worlds away from consumer electronics, underscore the company's deep desire to move away from iPhones and iPads and take big risks.

"Apple must increasingly rely on new products to reignite growth beyond the vision" of late founder Steve Jobs, said Bill Kreher, an analyst with Edward Jones Investments in St. Louis. "They need the next big thing."

Like so many old homes, "it grew." There's a back add-on with a flat roof that worries me to death in rainstorms. It needed a new roof years ago but we did not have the money. So we tarred it heavily. I need to get out of here but Real Estate is stone dead here thanks to Duh!1's idiot policies

The driver started bitching at me because my driveway still had snow on it. He told me I should pay to get it plowed. I told him I could either pay to get it plowed or purchase heating oil, but not both. Then I reminded him that I was paying $4.29 a gallon -- more then double what it was when Obama took office. At that he lowered his head, shut the hell up, and kept pumping.

591 A senior operations officer in the U.S. military ordered for photos of Osama bin LadenÂ’s corpse to be destroyed 11 days after he was killed, an email released Monday by a conservative legal group shows.

Judicial Watch released the document Monday after obtaining it through a Freedom of Information Act request.

On May 2, 2011, the American Navy Seal team shot and killed bin Laden at a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Judicial Watch quickly filed a FOIA request with the Pentagon and the CIA seeking photos of bin LadenÂ’s body, which have never been released. The Associated Press says it had also filed a request with the Pentagon asking for the photos.

Ten days later, U.S. Special Operations Commander Adm. William McRaven ordered his subordinates to “destroy” any photos they had of bin Laden “immediately,” according to new Defense Department documents provided to Judicial Watch. The other option was turning the pictures over to the CIA.

“One particular item that I want to emphasize is photos; particularly UBLs remains. At this point — all photos should have been turned over to the CIA; if you still have them destroy them immediately or get them to the [redacted],” McRaven wrote in an email dated May 13, 2011, addressed to “Gentleman,” according to Judicial Watch.

600 Like I've said before, all are welcome in Texas who work for a living. That includes foreigners as long as they come here legally. Even Californians. As long as they leave their stupid politics behind them. Texas is where people go today to start a new life.

601 Watch us carefully, Erowmero.  Too many Californians refuse to accept personal responsibility for the personal and political choices they made, or worse, were making their pile off the practices that wrecked CA and are now fleeing the tottering edifice they enriched themselves off.  The Dems in TX and DC are counting on that.
