Been suffering from a stomach bug all weekend so you'll have to fill in some of the ONT gaps on your own.
To Liberals Arithmetic IS Magic
Norman Ornstein in National Journal has a idea that would make everybody a near-millionaire at retirement. Can you spot the giant error?
The first iteration of KidSave, in simple terms, was this: Each year, for every one of the 4 million newborns in America, the federal government would put $1,000 in a designated savings account. The payment would be financed by using 1 percent of annual payroll-tax revenues. ...Under the initial KidSave proposal, the funds [$3500] could not be withdrawn until age 65, when, through the miracle of compound interest, they would represent a hefty nest egg. At 5 percent annual growth, an individual would have almost $700,000..
Hint: The Rule of 72
Answer here: At 5% annual compounded interest excluding inflation $3500 would turn into only around $84,000 over 65 years.
But global warmening which hasn't happened at all for 17+ years is Settled Science all you anti-science rethugglican deniers!!
No, Congress Did Not Debate Whether Shirley Temple Was A Communist
In 1938 the US Congress debated whether Shirley Temple was a Communist. She was ten. pic.twitter.com/BZh7LoKxrU
- Jonathan Freedland (@Freedland) February 11, 2014
Nope.
Here's the deal. The House Committee Investigating Un-American Activities (HUAC), so named in 1946, is well known. But there were a variety of Congressional hearings on Communist and Nazi activity over the years, beginning early in the 1930s. In 1938, Martin Dies and Samuel Dickstein launched a committee to investigate Soviet and other anti-American activities. Which is funny in and of itself because it turns out that Dickstein was a traitor taking cash money from the Soviets at that time.
The Shirley Temple falsehood wasn't created yesterday. It was actually a smear from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt administration. ...Whatever your thoughts on Communism, HUAC (and its predecessors), Soviet spies, Shirley Temple, or Harold Ickes, the media characterization of Congress debating whether Shirley Temple was a 10-year-old Communist is just flat-out wrong.
Some People Just Can't Be Happy
Or see other people happy. Because desperate need for attention. Exhibit A: February 14th.
No, you silly, not Valentine's Day. That's heteronormative and has thus been condemned to the dustbin of history. And no, it doesn't even mean V-Day, the rape-themed anti-holiday invented to promote Eve Ensler's play The Vagina Monologues. V-Day has gotten stale.
Instead, February 14 is now 1 Billion Rising day, Ensler's new dance-oriented hijacking of her own V-Day which was itself a hijacking of Valentine's Day. The thesis behind 1 Billion Rising is that if the world's one billion rape victims all rose up en masse and danced every February 14, then rape would cease to exist because unicorns and rainbows.
Bob Costas Pinkeye Straight Out Of Greek Tragedy About Smugness
Costas used to be one of the best sportscasters in the world. Arguably one of the most skilled baseball color men, he exuded passion for the game and filled his broadcasts with perfect trivia from his vast storehouse of baseball knowledge. I have no idea what Present Day Bob Costas did with Awesome Bob Costas, but the old guy is definitely no more.
Smugness has always been an issue for the man, but lately it's just gotten completely out of control. While other newscasters might have a warm, even friendly, presence, Costas' vibe is more "you're lucky to be listening to me." A stationery strutter, he spews information at the viewer in a manner that mostly calls attention to himself. Every interview by Costas is ultimately about Costas, each story ultimately about him. Someone should do a word count of questions and answers.
In an ironic twist, however, Goebbels' preferred medium was used, and is used, on a regular basis to portray the evils of Nazism. Movie stars know that the surest way to capture gold during award season is to appear in a movie about Nazis, the more evil the better. Instead of supermen marching ever forward, the lasting images of the thousand-year Reich are of Goebbels grunting and wheezing like a disgusting pig while he has sex with a bored woman and of Hitler wearing a ridiculous cape and impotently screaming "NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN!"This is the face of Jewish vengeance. In the decades since World War II, an art form and an industry that was created by Jewish immigrants has crafted the shared cultural memory of the Third Reich, and will shape the perceptions of generations to come. There will be no "reconsideration" of Hitler.
For the attempted annihilation of the Jewish people, the Nazis will forever be the great monsters of the world, a nightmare brought to life via celluloid and speakers. It is a fitting punishment.
No The DHS is NOT Buying Up All the Ammunition
Put bluntly, unless the GAO is under the threat of having their families interred in FEMA camps, most of what you're hearing from InfoWars and similarly credible sites is junk.
So who is buying all the ammunition? The NRA answers that question, as cited by Rich Smith of The Motley Fool.
Why You Should Avoid Oakland Altogether
You know it's bad when even the police are scared and suddenly find reasons to be elsewhere.
The last time Mrs. Maetenloch drove through Oakland she had to stop off for gas and got caught up in a gunfight between police and a guy who had hijacked a police car. Luckily the station attendant pulled her into his bullet-proof kiosk when the shots started flying. Since then I never travel through Oakland unless I'm armed. To paraphrase PJ O'Rourke you'd be crazy not to be armed in Oakland, but I assure you all the crazies have guns too.

The party that claims to be for the working man continues to support the importation of cheaper labor from overseas. They support driving up the price of electricity, hurting the poor and working class the most.
The party that claims to be for freedom of speech continues to create ever more restrictive speech codes on college campuses around the country.
The party that claims to be pro-sex and anti-rape continues to foster both the idea idea that all men are rapists and to push for the sexualization of children at younger and younger ages, while simultaneously working to deny parents the ability to protect their children from predators.

"In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all – security, comfort & freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again."

I've done service projects there, church organized trash pickups and the like in those worst of neighborhoods, except West Oakland and I only went there once with my mom to visit one of the churches there. I gotta say, the only other place(s) I have felt that similar atmospheric tension was spending a night in Ethiopia, where they had soldiers on every block. I suspect I would've felt the same in South Africa, had I had to venture from the airport.

It is a complete and utter lack of understanding how markets and money work.
1st, if everyone became a millionaire, then a million dollars would be worthless. You could have a million dollars and spend it all on a used car. And a real hoopty at that. The more dollars pursuing products, the more the products cost and the less real value there is in the instrument we call money.
2nd, If everyone had the huge savings accounts, just who is going to pay a 5% return on the money the borrow? Flood the market with that much money and you will not see squat for returns on it.

No matter what they do, it wont work.
Markets reward and punish according to what people do with their time and product (be it labor, creativity, engineering, property, cash or what have you). If what your product is, happens to also be plentiful, then you'll not get much back for it unless you make it unique and desirable in some way.

If it will run Vista it will run Windows 7. The requirements for Win7 are actually a bit less because they created a low RAM mode to better support netbooks when that was still a thing. Likewise, Windows 8 will run on anything that was adequate for Vista or 7.
Basically, the Core 2 Duo was the place where Microsoft said this was a good point of entry for a while. Things have shifted toward 64-bit and more RAM but the machine I originally built as a Vista testbed was in service right up through the Win8 betas and is still in storage as an emergency backup or loaner. It just got too cheap to build much more powerful new machines.

1)unplug dryer
2) take of vent hose
3) move away from wall
4) take off back of dryer
5) Unplug and remove old fuse
6) plug in and replace with new fuse
7) Put the back back on and reattach the vent hose and then plug in.
Because this seems like something I could do on my own, but I don't want to burn my house down trying. Posted by: Lauren at February 17, 2014 10:48 PM (6E7W2) Hide posts from (6E7W2)

Well the dryer tumbles but doesn't heat up which is what makes me think it is the fuse. It will dry the clothes eventually, but it takes literally all day.
I think it blew because it overheated because the cycle gets stuck and won't turn itself off so it ran for too long. If I avoid that cycle, it shuts off when it should.
This is a super cheap dryer that we've had for 10 years so it's not like it would be a huge loss, but if I can spend $10 on a fuse instead of hundreds on a new dryer, obviously I'd be pretty happy. Posted by: Lauren at February 17, 2014 10:54 PM (6E7W2) Hide posts from (6E7W2)
It may be even simpler than that. If it's on a 220 plug, electric dryers typically run the motor on one phase and the heater on the other. Check the power, first.

Any cop with a lick of sense in or around Oakland looked at what happened to Officer Johannes Mehserle and reconfigured their behavior accordingly.
You can't be tried for Murder One after accidentally shooting a resisting perp to death if you just are not at the scene of the crime when the perps are there. It's a remarkable simplification.
So you get this spectacle of police responding to urgent 9-1-1 calls with full lights and siren, driving at precisely 25 miles per hour, coming to a full stop at every intersection, giving the crims plenty of time to get away.
Don't think the local thugs took long to figure out this new way of operating.

Win 8 and Win 7 are basically the same except for the Start and App screens, which are pretty close to useless on a desktop or laptop. However, on Win 8.1 you can easily set it to boot directly to the desktop so you don't even have to mess with the Start and App screens. I'd say go with Win 8 just because the support life span will be longer than Win 7.

Every year, without fail, I open up the dryer completely and get in there with a slim vacuum nozzle.
The #1 place for structure fires to begin in homes in North America is in garages.
The #1 place for fires to start in garages is in clothes dryers.
A pretty much unbelievable amount of lint gets past the lint trap. Some ends up caked along the hot air ducting. Some escapes into the inner works via seams. I make sure it's all gone inside and out, and that the entire path from dryer drum to outside vent is completely clean again.
Go vacuum the coils of the fridge and freezer while you're at it. This isn't meant to save you from a fire. It's meant to save you money on your utility bills.
Oh, and it might be wise to put a networked smoke detector in the garage. I believe that's code these days.

Manually cycle each breaker. Old ones will sometimes trip without the lever noticeably moving. If you find that, replace accordingly.
Or if you have a voltmeter, it's a piece of cake to check that the receptacle is live on the appropriate slots.

two other things to check if you have that voltmeter
Resistance across the heating coil - open circuit or infinity means a bad coil (reads as O.L on a Fluke model)
Resistance across that fuse you just pulled, better to make sure it actually was a blown fuse - just to possibly save you thast $10

Lenovo do outlet sales via their own Web site.
Carefully read reviews. Some of their stuff is no longer built to the classic tanklike ThinkPad standards.
They have traditionally supported old hardware for longer than just about anyone else in the business. (Some institutional buyers who traditionally favored IBM have slow hardware refresh cycles. Lenovo inherited that tradition.) So if you plan to own the machine long enough to run it into the ground, they're a good bet.

$360? Not bad. I'm writing this on a Dell Inspiron 15, with slightly weaker specs than above, but I paid $299 at Best Buy new over a year ago. Win 8, unfortunately.
It handles the tasks I want it to, and I don't play games on it. It does have a 15" screen which helps for tiny text sites, as you can blow them up some.

Where are you shopping? I would expect to pay more the $99 for a 1 TB 2.5" drive.
Even a 240 GB SSD can be had for under $150 these days. Which would actually be perfectly adequate if she isn't carrying around a lot of video files. An external drive can easily make up that deficit.

Apocryphally (I have not tried this myself), Windows 8 can be coerced to use the classic Windows shell instead of the dopey new smartphone derived interface.
It is still pretty much Windows 7 at lower levels of the OS. Really it's the interface that people find so counterintuitive and frustrating.

The low end models from Lenovo are as crappy as anyone's. We do work for Lenovo at events, especially CES, and we have to keep a certain number of Lenovo machines on hand because they don't want anything else to be seen in their booth/location. The Core i3 models we got in late 2012 had a lot of the same annoyances I found in cheap laptops in general. It's simply a limitation of what can be done for the price.

I've got an iPhone 5 on Verizon. And honestly it is a functional phone. I had a droid before and while there are some aspects of Apple that are maddening, like their OS updates, but you can say the same for an Android. It does some stuff I like, and there were some features my droid had that I wished it had as well, such as widgets, and holding down the keys to select numbers and punctuations instead of always switching to the numbers keyboard.

The idea that you could put $4 billion a year into an account somewhere and actually get 5% growth every year for 65 straight without something imploding. Interest doesn't magically appear out of the ether-whatever entity is holding the funds must in turn loan them out and generate better than 5% return every year. Since we have never had 10 consecutive years of 5% GDP growth (a fact that repeatedly comes up in relation to bullshit balanced budget proposals 10 years out), 65 is completely out of the question. Which means the entity overseeing the program must be making better decisions than the general economy. For 65 years.
Unless the plan is to park it at the federal reserve and just print the extra funds 65 years from now, in which case, eh, why not it's not like the country or the fed will be around that long anyway.

Except the CD interface will likely be SATA-2, at best. The I/O capability in low-end and older models is the big constraint.
For my next laptop, if that should happen any time soon, I want a 2nd gen mSATA slot for the boot volume and 2.5" slot for a high capacity platter drive that will be powered down most of the time. If you want to watch a video file, it can be most effective for battery life to copy it to the SSD and watch from there while the platter drive goes to sleep. That way the data is transferred at maximum speed rather than having the drive spinning for the duration.

And while the citizens of Oakland appear to be well armed and have plenty of ammo, they don't appear to be disciplined in their use, as ole Georgie recommended in that quote.
I'd surely like to see those yoots come down here to the MS Coast and pull those tricks, though. They'd get to see moar guns, cops, badges, tasers, dogs, guns, billyclubs, handcuffs, guns, and jail cells than they even thought existed.

I would disagree. The different brands have specific things they like to emphasize. For instance, if you favor the clitoral simulator pointing device in the keyboard, Lenovo is the brand most likely to offer that, as they acquired the patent in the purchase of IBM's PC business.
You can have five brands all coming out of the same factory but it can be the little details that distinguish them. The trick is getting enough decent review info to derive a preference.
I am reminded of visiting the Mitac booth back in the days when I'd work CeBIT. It would be funny to see a familiar item and see how many different companies marketed it under their own brand in their particular region.

If you're still on, if you would have a question for you. Have you heard of Joel Greenblatt and his "magic formula investing" technique, and if so what are your thoughts on it? It's basically a value strategy that looks at earnings yield and return on capital.
I started following it with a large portion of my 401K from a previous job (about 20% of my overall savings). I can't follow it to the letter, because I hate a lot of debt exposure and I want some degree of balance by sector, so I filter it down a little further, but overall it seems like it makes sound financial sense

Deety, your situation is fairly 'normal' for someone in distressed financial straits. Ignore Moo Moo the Asshole, who obviously has never been in your shoes.
Scrimp and save, get a second job if you have the time at all, and keep making the notes until you can buy out the title loan. Then you begin to have options. Including just keeping the car with no payments.

But of course the tough part is, a job is required to save, the existing car is needed to make it to the job, the loan is required to retain the car. As I understand the matter. Quite the three-pipe problem, Watson.
One thing I have been anecdotally told is that Government Motors are still aggressively writing new-vehicle auto loans to anyone who can vaguely fog a mirror. Must move product at any cost to keep the union assembly lines humming. Would not normally be caught dead anywhere near one of those dealerships, but, any port in a storm.

Dammit, we do what we must. I don't even have my garden anymore--that's the price one pays for living on the cheap, it's damned hard to economize.
BUT my family is intact, has food, clothing and shelter, and it gives me all sorts of opportunities to learn and successfully deploy all manner of new curse words.

I don't think it's as bad as people think. The numbers are staggering on the surface. You hear of billions this billions that. And in a vacuum those are big numbers. But what people don't remember is that these big numbers aren't coming due tomorrow. They're due over decades. And it took decades to get into the mess.
There will be a few muni bankruptcies along the way, no doubt. But I don't see the calamity of the doom/gloom crowd happening. States/cities will be forced to take corrective measures. And they are slowly but surely doing so. Scott Walker turned his state around in a couple of years and now has $1B surplus. As bad as things are they can be turned around pretty quickly. Just need the political will. And eventually math dictates that political will.
Now there are the extreme cases like Detroit that are beyond salvation. But these are the exceptions, not the rule. Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at February 18, 2014 12:04 AM (0LHZx) Hide posts from (0LHZx)
Just for the record, I disagree -- I think the political will to get politician's hands off our property and out of our pockets is gone.

I saw the fat gay guy on Conan once. He said he's basically playing his mother for the character. I watched a couple episodes when it began but it really held no "must watch" stuff for me.

A friend of mine sold off his ancient grad school hooptie car to a nephew just getting his learner's permit. $2000. Blue book value. He made the kid sign a contract that the kid would not sell the car onward without approval.
Why?
My friend put it like this: that it was a simple, reliable vehicle which had enjoyed impeccable preventative maintenance. And that it would almost certainly give another hundred thousand miles of service with reasonable basic care.
And, he went on to say, if the car was sold it would pull only roughly $2000 or less in sale proceeds. But finding another car to replace it, for that little money, with equally good prospects of long term faithful service, is a VERY chancy proposition. Odds strongly favor getting stuck with someone else's money-pit lemon.
So, cars that have been owned for a while and that are known quantities really are something to be taken into account when making vehicle ownership decisions.

I don't think the dynamic exactly works that way. I mean, we get out-and-out trolls coming in here and they get to post for a while before being zapped. We've had people go through a wide variety of arcs in how they treated people or how people treated them. It's not "take a bunch of shit, get your bones, then start dishing it out" at all.

I can see where you are coming from but I don't think it's quite the whole story.
Yeah, who DOESN'T hate the Marketing Weenies?
But they fulfill a VITAL role in this new "information economy"!
Without their tireless efforts to misunderstand, misapprehend, miss-communicate, be tirelessly, obstinately, obliviously, relentlessly fucking forever ignorant of any department outside their own "work-sphere" where would we be?
Maybe, Outside Sales people wouldn't feel like such unsupported JACK-HOLES, when they are told to push a new product?
Maybe, some Project Managers' wouldn't feel like such tools when a Sales Creep has to climb a legitimate question up the ladder?
I dunno...
Probably, MY FAULT.
Sales Creeps should NEVER ask questions about the Product.
Not when we have "Marketers" to tell us When and Where and How Many Tweets...

Squeezing the old sliver of soap to the new one? Amateur hour.
When I visited my Grandfather in Port Angeles, WA, he had a jar of soap slivers in the basement - he made his own bars of soap out of the sludge. He also made his own wine, reloaded his ammo, made his furniture and half of his tools.
Hell, he made the A-frame cabin he lived in from the trees on the property he bought in the early 70's... The original prepper.
His garden would put most of us to shame, and he also knew where all the wild food grew locally (i bet we picked six 5 gallon buckets of blackberries in about an hour).

Actually, you may or may not catch me up in that net, depending on the precise way that questions are worded.
I believe that the time of year when you were born has an effect on you....and this may have been chronicled in the language of astrology....whereas the actual mechanism of astrology is entirely unscientific....and is furthermore made ridiculous by the precession of the equinoxes.

Seriously, though -- if you start out with "kids born right before harvest time are fat, but feel neglected" because their initial moments on the planet were when mom and dad were frantically gathering stuff so they wouldn't starve in winter....it makes tons of sense that there'd be a lot of pre-scientific knowledge wrapped up in the language of astrology.....but when all that is perma-bonded to stars and planets that, over centuries, end up in Spring, you get the totally bogus pseudo-science we have today.

I know it sucks, but do what you have to to get past this. Two, three jobs? Pay the the exorbitant rare for a while, save, then get something else?
I'll be crawling under a house tomorrow working for pennies, but it will pay the power bill, and I'm thankful to have the work. Believe me, I know how you feel - but it's going to get better.

Has the title loan company put a tracking or disabling device on the car?
Yeah, they have now, you bet your ass!
(Funny how I read that, about the GPS, in the New Contract, when I was "re-applying" today for my loan, waiting for "Rafeael" to "check my odometer" whilst I "re-applied".)
Went outside and watched them do it, for a bit..
Honestly, I'm totally OK with that.
If I'm not paying the loan, I think they should have SOME handle on the collateral, no?
I have NOT updated my driver's licence since I was evicted for the EXPRESS reason that my car not be seized.
I once told a collections officer the hours and address of my (secure) place of work.
It has made them CRAZY, the way I won't voluntarily update.

Now I find myself wondering. We know the water has been turned off to the complex or at least our group of units several times recently, thanks to the distinctive sound of air working its way through the pipes later in the day when we got home. could something they did have created a high pressure situation that compromised weak point in our home that might otherwise have held up for many more years? It seems a remarkable coincidence that two failures occurred at about the same time within close proximity to each other.
Because if this is not just old plumbing but instead something that was caused to happen, it could make a huge difference in how much repair we are able to afford.

Thanks for the history / area description. The same issues are in almost every major city in the world. It is nice to have someone describe the 'local' twist on the theme.

I won't speak for anyone else touched by this, but don't send thoughts and prayers my way -- send 'em towards other 'fragile' morons who need 'em more, and to the family (weirdly summarized moron info link -- http://minx.cc/?blog=86&post=347189#c21788987 ) -- 'cause that's where mine are going.
And I'll say something else straight up -- don't stop caring. Don't stop reaching out. Don't hold back. Don't stifle. Never think that you're not supposed to help.
I thank you for your concern, Fenelon, and I fervently hope it gets to those who need it.

Even in my current location, there are 'ghetto' locations. Areas of high segregation, mostly by choice I might add. These things are just known; not published on official maps. I think it's more a segregation by income than race; the outcome is similar though.
I think that a high status black can integrate easier into a high status neighborhood than a low class white can in a low status neighborhood. A certain 'craziness' index is needed to do Part B. 'That white boy be crazy, best to leave him and his alone.' The Second Amendment may come into play here.
Regardless of what the gubmint may decree, people will make their own judgements about where they choose to live and why.
One thing I have noticed about the HQ is the general LACK of class consciousness of the participants here. I see no putdowns of anyone striving to make a better life for themselves; the key is the striving to do so.
Not the results. Just trying.

No I don't. I had to move to the Atlanta area next, and schools was my prime consideration for my kids. They got a great environment in te Peachtree city school system. that system, though, was purposely sought out by me in advance. MY house purchase was predicated on that system.
For seven years, their system delivered.
I had new but similar concerns as we moved to the M Gulf Coast.

I can't remember the details but I seem to remember watching someone who had worked in the Reagan White House about this. His answer was that after Reagan was shot, Nancy Reagan was terrified of another assassination attempt and turned to astrology to try to influence the times that Reagan would go to places. Reagan did not believe in astrology but he did love his wife and to some extent did allow her to have some influence on the Presidential schedule, not on policy matters.
I can't offer you a cite, this is just something I remember from TV years ago.
