Liberals Support Higher Taxes to Punish the Rich Rather Than Bring in Revenue

Okay this is from the UK but I have little doubt that a poll of liberals in the US would get similar results. Envy and spite over perceived injustice drive a lot of human behavior and hence a lot of politics.

Sixty-nine per cent of Labour supporters would want a top rate tax of 50 per cent even if it brought in no money.

I'm sure they'd dispute the premise. I'm sure they'd insist that it did bring money in. And, on one level, they'd believe it; it's human nature to start with the result we want and then rationalise it to ourselves with what look like hard data. I think their rationalisation would be false, obviously - once the behavioural consequences of the tax are factored in, it becomes a net drain on revenue - but I might be subject to my own confirmation bias in the other direction.

Anyway, this isn't a blog about the statistics - I've already posted one of those. No, this is a blog about the mind-set of people who see taxation, not as an unpleasant necessity, but as a way to punish others.

BfFxhYJCYAAc_JC

In her last Commons appearance as prime minister, Margaret Thatcher was asked by Simon Hughes whether she was proud of the fact that, for all her undoubted successes, inequality had widened during her eleven years in office. She replied magisterially:

The hon. Gentleman is saying that he would rather that the poor were poorer, provided that the rich were less rich.

And Charles Crooke of NRO points out that the left loves progressive taxation but finds the idea of progressive representation utterly reprehensible. And it's not as if the idea of progressive taxation itself is based on any logical or moral foundation.
But Mr. Perkins here has only taken a step that progressives took a few generations ago, when they embraced escalating rates of taxation as a foundation for economic justice, and applied it to a different problem. If our political liabilities - taxes - should be as a matter of justice proportional to our income, then why shouldn't our political input be likewise proportionate? Why should proportionality be the rule in one context and not the other? The leap from "No taxation without representation" to "proportional taxation with proportional representation" is not a very dramatic one. But Mr. Perkins has been received as though he were the offspring of Marie Antoinette and an unreconstructed Ebenezer Scrooge.
The case for an income tax that is proportional is far from obvious, and the case for one that is progressive even less so. The principle of equality under the law suggests, to my mind at least, that every man's standing in relation to the state should be the same as every other man's, regardless of his wealth or income. So why should somebody pay 20 times or 50 times or 10,000 times the taxes that another man pays? ...The usual answer given to that question is "the rich can afford to pay more." That is true, but it is not a principled reason. A rich man could afford to pay more for a Big Mac or a Honda Civic, too, but we do not expect him to do so. Another popular explanation is: Paying the same rate as everybody else would be too hard on the poor man. True, but that is an argument for lower taxes, not for progressive taxation.

Well of these I've seen Amélie and A Cat in Paris and enjoyed both so that's a 100% success rate so far.

8. Ne Quittez Pas!

The Draw: Félix Mandel is a spacey astrophysicist prone to flights of fantasy. But even he is shocked when he gets a call (collect) from his late father with one final request.
The Fact: 39% of France claims to have no belief in life after death.
The Fiction: We always imagined the dearly departed were more likely to send a text message.

Daily Doonesbury Going on Hiatus

Wait - Doonesbury was still being published?

I think it's been years since I've seen an actual on-paper Doonesbury comic and even longer since I gave it more than half a second's thought.

To Trudeau's credit he did have Kerry's number from day one.

db711022

And the comments from Stephen Green's site are pretty funny:

I recall one Doonesbury strip, circa 1980, lampooning Teddy Kennedy's bloviating style, which ends with a reporter shouting "A verb, Senator! We need a verb!"

For the sake of that one strip, Trudeau still has a little credit with me.
The reason you did not know that Doonesbury was still running is because it is printed in something called a newspaper.
Newspapers were things people read in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

Actually, I think there are still a few being published although I could be wrong.

FilmDrunk Law Review: Breaking Down 'My Cousin Vinny'

Please, no talking during this column and turn off your cell phones!

Now, I generally don't know what movies people have and haven't seen anymore. My assumption is yes for Star Wars and no for Bucky Larson, but everything in between is kind of a mystery. So while My Cousin Vinny was hardly an obscure art-house gem when it was released, that was over 20 years ago, and who the f*ck knows what the kids are watching these days.

...Irritatingly, it is on neither Netflix Instant nor Amazon Prime, so you'll have to pay to rent it. Like some kind of animal.

Candidates For Worst Neighbors Ever

Because a retiree neighbor had a 12 inch right-of-way on their property which they thought might hurt its sale price, the couple began a campaign of assault and harassment and even attempted to have her placed into a mental asylum.

A banker and his wife waged a 'sinister and devious' campaign of harassment against a vulnerable neighbour to try to increase the sale value of their home, a court heard yesterday.

Church warden Sandra Saxton, 69, was attacked and injured by retired City financier Peter Bayliss, who falsely told police and social services she had gone mad to try to get her put in a mental hospital.

Bayliss, 62, and his artist wife Kim, 53, wanted the deaf pensioner out of the way after they clashed over a 12-inch strip of land at the back of their gardens, which gave Mrs Saxton right of way behind their property.

The couple were angry at losing a court battle with her over the right of way in Westerham, Kent, in 2009, and began spreading lies about her.

Yesterday Judge Nigel Gerald made a stinging attack on the couple, saying they had destroyed what was once a 'happy little community'. They will have to pay damages and costs of £338,000 - more than the value of the home they were trying to sell.

He condemned the 'sheer awfulness' of their attempts to have Mrs Saxton sectioned under the Mental Health Act, saying: 'She suffered and suffers from no mental health ailments.

How Not to Die: 20 Survival Tips

Okay some of these seem rather specific and may not apply to everyone.

2. Don't Mess with Vending Machines.
You skipped lunch. You need a snack. You insert money into a vending machine, press the buttons, and nothing comes out. You get mad.
STAT: Vending machines caused 37 deaths between 1978 and 1995, crushing customers who rocked and toppled the dispensers. No recent stats exist, but the machines are still a danger.
DON'T: Skip lunch.

Boy Genius or Future Scandi Super-Villain?

It's hard to say at this point but I have to give the kid points for gumption and quick thinking. And he would have pulled it off if it weren't for that meddling snow plow driver. And the damned snow.

A ten-year-old Norwegian boy who drove his parents' car into a snowy ditch offered an inventive excuse to police: he was a dwarf who had forgotten his driver's license.

The boy - who lives near Dokka, a town 110kms (68 miles)  north of Oslo - put his 18-month old sister into the car sometime before 6am, while his parents were still sleeping and set off to visit his grandparents in Valdres, about 60 kilometres away.

He drove more than 10 kilometres before veering off the road, where he was found by a snowplow driver who alerted police.

'The parents woke up and discovered that the children were missing and that someone had taken off with their car. They were pretty upset, as you can imagine,' said Baard Christiansen, a spokesman for the Vest Oppland police district.

'The boy told the snowplow driver that he was a dwarf and that he had forgotten his driver's licence at home.'

Police said the children were not injured and the car was not damaged, and that no charges would be filed.

'We have talked to them, and I'm pretty sure they're going to pay very close attention both to their children and to their car keys in the future,' Christiansen said.

1 Green Energy: Bird Slaughtering Death Rays The “environmentally friendly” method of “green energy” production using wind farms, has been known for some time now to also result in the wanton slaughter of birds, including many endangered species. But now we can add another “environmentally friendly” method of “green energy” production to that list of anti-avian power plants: A $2.2 billion solar farm in California is responsible for the slaughter of a plethora of birds. 30 Trudeau has the same shtick a lot of political comics have though, that of not being funny. Good comedy should be able to be funny without holding a specific political view. However, even if I were liberal, I do not think I would find much of his stuff "funny". It is like the "smart" accolade. That is like the kiss of death when I see that word applied to comedies, because it usually means they are so "nuanced" as to no longer be funny.

I'm going to paint an otherwise good person in a bad light, but my soon to be MIL is a financial trainwreck.  She works hard, has held some decent jobs at times, but she just has no use for savings and gets herself into bad spots as a result.  Any time anything unexpected happens, you can be sure there is a financial drama coming.  She always thinks she needs a new car because it is reliable...that kind of thing.  Fortunately, my fiance has dropped some of those learned traits early in adulthood.

So we have troubles with how much to help her.  Not arguments, we both struggle with it together.  Because the reality is that when she gets money it will be gone soon enough, one way or another.  The reality is that she'd probably be better off (like we would) with us holding our money and earning some interest on the extra savings, until she's down so deep she is facing bankrupcy.

164 Huh... I thought the nasty things were super rare this far north. Learn something new every day, I guess... I remember when they found one in a retaining pond at a local Mall a few years ago (CDR Ms backyard). It was all the news could talk about for a week. And snakes? Copperheads. Way worse than cottonmouths. I was hiking at Kerr Dam this summer and stumbled across one - the kids walked right over it, and the ex & I came up on it ten seconds later. If I was carrying, I would have shot it. Instead, I took a picture.

I can be really, really harsh after the "Third Time's A Charm" - "rule". After I've helped you twice? The third time comes with "ADVICE" and a "Closed" sign. This 20% "rule" can cut out the insurance-payment scam for medical emergencies. (I say this as a single person without kids). It also "insures" that you can buy a repairable "beater" car, should yours be covered by minimal insurance.

There just may not be any well-known active faults, likely to cause earthquakes when they move. Some regions are rife with earthquakes, and some have them only rarely. There may some areas where earthquakes are so rare, they don't exist in the historical record at all. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 18, 2014 11:08 PM (60Q+L) We had a little rockin' earthquake in Alpine in the mid 1990s. It's in far West Texas near mountains. Posted by: Sphynx I was gonna say....Seems like there was a small series of tremors near Dallas just recently too. I used to live on the coast in the Pelican State and we had them there also, although rarely. I wonder if the Marfa Lights come from unknown faults. I'm thinking the Solitario being a giant ancient volcano area might hint at some seismic possibilities. I'm not buying that map.

Its because he's a shitty stand up comedian.  I looked, apparently his stand up involved impressions.  And that got him a gig with an improv group which got him on SNL.  I don't think there are many impressionists that are all that funny, especially when its the majority of their act.  Frank Caliendo (before he got repetitive) and Kevin Pollack are about the only two that do impressions that I can think of that are really funny.  And I just can't see an impressionist comedy base being a good starting point for a topical monologue.

Actually, that reminds me of something I saw on ZeroHedge.....which, apparently, is legal.

Guy wants to buy a $90,000 car, makes arrangements, gets all the right people into a room.

Goes to one side of the room, and buys $90,000 of American silver coins....takes that to other side of room and hands the sack to auto dealer, who counts it and gives the guy title to the car....with a receipt for the face value of the coins -- $415.20. Then the dealer walks over to the coin guy and gets $90,000 for the coins. The plate fees and sales tax are based on the receipt.

He said yes, for "reasons of fairness." ( I think those were his words.) ------------------- It was actually one of the presidential debates - the first one, I think. Given that the viewership wasn't limited to the Dems, anyone with half a brain should have realized what bad news he was the moment that utterance came out of his mouth. Unfortunately, the word "fair" seems to have far too much of an hypnotic power on far too many people.

327 #294, one reason I'm not buying that map is with the solid rock formations in the East, the New Madrid will carry a LOT further if it cuts loose. Last time it rang the church bells in Boston. I'm 200 miles east of there north of Nashville, and if the NM repeats the last time, I plan on my house being a total.

Of course the company that built it said they can do me another one. =)

I checked her out on Imdb because I had not seen her in anything recently, and this lady had a pretty varied career: Dallas General Hospital The Master (who doesn't love Lee Van Cleef?) The New Mike Hammer The A team Knight Rider Steel Magnolias Quantum Leap Northern Exposure Cliffhanger (the Stallone mountain climber movie) Walker Texas Ranger Friday Night Lights Aside from Northern exposure and Friday night lights, it looks like she just did single episode work on everything else. I always thought she was pretty good (aside from being hot.)

Just read about this recently. Around 1989/90, when Rivers' show bombed,  Fox tried to fix it by firing her husband who was an executive producer. Rivers then threw a tantrum and said if he's fired then she would quit, which she did, which magically solved the problem for Fox.

360 Slapweasel: hey hey. Life is okay I guess. I just applied for yet another job with my nearby community college.

Also I think I'm losing my touch typing ability a bit. I've always prided myself on being a rather quick and accurate typist. In the past I could usually score 70-80 with no errors with just a few tries. But last year and this year, it was a struggle through many many tries to get anything above 70 without errors.

Last year, after literally about 20 attempts, I got to 75 with no errors. This year? After approximately the same number of tries, I got up to 64 with no errors. Hmm.

Posted by: Darth Randall at February 19, 2014 01:02 AM (KlVdw) Carson also took Fridays off almost constantly, so he always had a substitute host on those nights. Some of those guest hosts were Leno, Joan Rivers and Bill Cosby. He got his audience ready for a replacement a decade before he retired. Stand up comedians seem to have a hatred for Jay Leno because he isn't the "tortured soul" they try to make themselves to be. He's happy, and he isn't embarassed by his success.

Given that the viewership wasn't limited to the Dems, anyone with half a brain should have realized what bad news he was the moment that utterance came out of his mouth. More than welcome. Cherished, even.

The "Hide posts from (W3UHW)" thing is automatically generated by a widget that I installed that I got from Merovign. On my screen, it is in blue and links to a script that hides posts by hash. I installed it on a thread that had two trolls on it, and then mocked them by demonstrating how it worked -- poof! -- so they could froth away without me. One got banned some time after....I don't know about the other.

It is a fun toy, and I would recommend it highly, because the troll got to realize that anything he did was a waste of time.

400 yankeefifth: the 1970s vibe actually works for Rockford, same way it works when you watch some of Burt Reynolds' classic flicks from the time (like Smokey and the Bandit). I.e., a macho "man's man" vibe that never took itself that seriously.

Another show that did that balance well IMHO was The Dukes of Hazzard.

413 The Wild Wild West is still watchable, maybe because it's period specific. Mid 1970's shows have aged poorly, the furniture styles and fabric color/prints are very tacky and drab.

415 Another show that did that balance well IMHO was The Dukes of Hazzard. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 19, 2014 01:38 AM (HVI5a) Dukes, Miami Vice and Knight Rider were all friday night popcorn shows IIRC. Got an autographed pic of Catherine Bach from a Pittsburgh car show. Bikini and jean shorts pic signed to an 10 year old. Sigh. And I like to kid people that I was named after the millionaire on Knight Rider. Takes most folks a while to realize I was born way before that show aired.

423 s a result of the fiasco of losing her show, Rivers' husband killed himself. So she not only lost her close relationship with Carson, but her husband as well by doing her own show. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 19, 2014 01:17 AM (HVI5a) I believe most of the problems on earth are from one of two things. 1. Religious extremists, of any religion 2. Money and/or greed. 424 yankeefifth: the 1970s vibe actually works for Rockford, same way it works when you watch some of Burt Reynolds' classic flicks from the time (like Smokey and the Bandit). Yeah, if you delve into it, I'd also recommend looking at moving the insert to the line AFTER the end of the sig, 'cause if the blue link spans two lines, the insert pointer ends up in the middle.

And, though my experience with trolls was eminently satisfactory, it disturbs people. It wouldn't be a bad idea to change the "Hide posts from..." to "[Ixnay button]". It'd make it easier to explain.

I was allowed to fill a small bowl with chips and pretzels.  My brother and I were to split a sixteen-ounce bottle of Pepsi at 8:00 PM.

Some nights, we could actually make our snacks last long enough to enter a plea of:  "I'm not finished, yet.  Please can I stay up?"  Other nights, we could pull a "Delay of Game" and start pouring at 8:30.

The answer ebbed and flowed.  Mostly, it ebbed.

-Sometimes?  You've got to hand over the bowl and go to bed.

487 I'm going to give Y5 a "pass".  After re-reading the posts, I still believe he was being "goofy" instead of hurtful or stand-offish.  I believe they call it "silly".

When he thought cthulhu was calling him "hurtful", he back-pedaled.  When he apologized, he got tagged a couple-a-more times.

He got defensive.

...happens to me.
-happens to the best of us.

Perhaps the ladies could call me and I could differentiate between voice and text!  ...lol.  Inflection, (even given the italics, bold, caps and quotes), is only apparent, should the style be regular, so as to be familiar.

The, "perhaps the ladies can call me", quote can be taken six-ways-to-Sunday, given the wrong inflection, without benefit of vocal context .

Given the text's parameters, the implied intent is rarely apparent lest inferred by previous behavior.

...what was I talking about?

He got defensive.

...happens to me.
-happens to the best of us.

Perhaps the ladies could call me and I could differentiate between voice and text! ...lol. Inflection, (even given the italics, bold, caps and quotes), is only apparent, should the style be regular, so as to be familiar.

The, "perhaps the ladies can call me", quote can be taken six-ways-to-Sunday, given the wrong inflection, without benefit of vocal context .

Given the text's parameters, the implied intent is rarely apparent lest inferred by previous behavior.

...what was I talking about?

Look, there's stuff all over -- the criminalization of everything, so people are ruined or saved by "prosecutorial discretion"; anti-American propaganda in schools; extortion in medicine by cranking "list prices" for things to the moon and forcing everyone to pay monthly blackmail payments to merely be overcharged; forcing everyone to pay useless academics insane amounts of borrowed money to obtain degrees in critical XXX theory or grievance studies that are objectively worse than useless; supporting tinpot dictators in Honduras and Venezuela and shafting our friends; debasing the currency hand-over-fist; and a thousand other things.....yeah, y'know -- Obama ain't real good at hiding stuff.

But here's the point -- an $80,000 student loan to a grievance studies major will never get repaid, and any attempt to force one into obvious slavery is going to blow up the game. The Fed can keep printing money by pretending that $80,000 loan is good as gold.....but it ain't. We're already seeing "Irish Democracy" in action with Obamacare. And people are homeschooling in droves. Yeah, they got big plans, and they're ugly.....but none of their shit works.

538 #512

Charles Nelson Reilly's biggest role was probably the TV series 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,' which was in perpetual syndication when I was a little kid. IMDB says it ran from 1968-1970. It was also the most well known role for Edward Mulhare before Knight Rider. He was the Ghost of Capt. Daniel Gregg.

Reilly was his modern day descendent, Claymore.

Although there was the kid friendly aspect of one of the characters being a ghost, I could never get into the show as a child. It was one of the staples of daytime TV that made being home sick horribly boring.

Posted by: Epobirs at February 19, 2014 12:15 AM (bPxS6)

539 #523

Reilly did tons of animation voice work and was the villain, Horatio Hoodoo, on the Kroftt show, Lidsville. IMDB just reminded me that Hoodoo had a brother named Bruce, a rare gay gag for a kids' show back in 1971, when Reilly was one of the few openly gay celebrities.

548 Dunno who, really, to thank for the Aurora Alert (Maet?) but a HUGE thank you. I've never seen the Northern Lights (California born, and lived most of my life), but it was a bucket list item for me. Yeah. "Was". Past tense. I can confirm that the Aurora was clearly visible as far south as Spokane WA (about 47.66there was just enough of a break from the clouds and rain) at 01:00A local time. I could see pulsations, rays, and huge bright areas (from 5 Mile Ridge Road, above the city lights, and out past all the street lights). The entire sky north was a green glow. I even woke my wife up, to drive up with me (it was only a few minutes drive from the house to better viewing). Again: huge thanks for that heads up. Otherwise I would have missed it. Awesome.

549 The dehumidifiers are still running. If I open my bedroom door it sounds like a jet engine is spinning up downstairs. Hopefully, that will be done in the morning and they can pull the equipment to allow someone in to work on the leaking pipe.

My sister had no choice but to file a claim on the homeowner insurance, which has already had the deductible double after the last incident with the washer flood. Which in turn makes me feel real swell about my intermittent employment and inability to contribute. I've told my mother she can stop waiting to maximize the human interest angle and just win the lottery already. So far she just wins little bits of cash here and there at a rate that covers perhaps a third of her expenditures on it.

I noted that the Super Lotto Second Chance page for entering numbers allows a maximum of 1000 per month. I guess there must be people out there who keep an eye out for discarded tickets while roving for recyclables or something. I guess it helps pass the time if you've nothing better to do.

Ah but it became a cable staple. (I'm pretty sure I saw it in a theater the first time.) And it was probably made quite inexpensively, so I wouldn't be surprised if it made a modest profit on the theatrical run. Anyway, vast numbers watched it on TV and knew the truth about Merv Griffin.

But nobody did anything. The guy was untouchable. Who knows what else he might have gotten away with if so inclined. The injecting people with window cleaner was bad enough.

I can accept that people don' t believe in God, or heaven or the devil, but this was not a question of belief in those. He doesn't believe in evil. he's an Atheist. I told him you don't have to even be a Theist to believe in evil. How can anyone look around at the history of the world-and particularly the 20th century and not believe in evil. Hitler's extermination of 6 million Jews-Just a poor personal decision?. Stalins starving out Russia and the killing of untold millions -Just a dysfunctional childhood? And if you "don't believe in evil" does that mean you "don't believe in good."

The disaster response guys are not the same ones who'd do the plumbing work. Due to various complications with other recent disasters we weren't in a rush to get the insurance involved. The floor affected by the leak was only a few months old.

I can go without the use of the kitchen and downstairs bathroom for however long it takes. It's the loss of water to the whole condo, meaning no toilets (unless I fill up the tank manually) or even cold showers. It's warm enough in drought stricken Los Angeles County to make a cold shower tolerable.

It makes me think differently about the cost of a gym membership.

576 I have a friend who bought a house near the studio where he works. It was this old 1920s bungalow on a lot that was an oddly elongated rectangle, giving him a narrow but very deep front yard. That was common in some LA neighborhoods back then. That place was the first I'd ever seen with a Murphy bed in real life. The kind of place the studios use to keep contract players and/or mistresses.

Anyway, it needed a LOT of work. He didn't have a usable shower for almost two years and relied on a gym about midway between the house and the studio for bathing.

587 568. Saying "I don't believe in evil" is not denying that evil exists so much as he doesn't think that evil is evil. A worst sort of person to have dealings with is one that has no respect for anything, good or evil, all things being equally worthless, starting with you. To prove that all is meaningless requires that all be stripped of inner content and left a ruin.

May I postulate that you really need two rifles, minimum. One .22 for target practice and one of a hunting caliber. I would recommend the Marlin 795 for the .22 just because it's inexpensive and it works well right out of the box. Others will weigh in on the Ruger 10/22, which is a fine rifle with lots of options...but usually requires some work right out of the box to be a good shooter.

As far as the hunting caliber, a bolt action rifle works just fine and you can get them in a myriad of calibers, but I'd suggest something in 7mm/30-something. 7mm magnum, 7mm-06, .308, 30-06...during the recent ammo scarcity I could always find 7mm magnum so that's the caliber I'm going for when I get my next rifle.

Just my personal opinion, the best gun is the one you like.

Actually, there are some interesting questions in there. How do you select the guy who will be drawing forth your flesh-and-blood from your wife's private quarters? I can well imagine that you might choose someone whose medical skills were well in advance of your interpersonal relationship. I know that, were I in your shoes, I'd be opting to hold her hands rather than manipulate the apparatus -- and I assume that's where you'll be....though I could well understand other scenarios.

594 582, 586 Interesting dialogue, thought provoking this morning. My coffee's gone cold whilst contemplating. And likely as not, the thread's already dead. Many brilliant people are disillusioned with the orthodox dogmatic scenario, and reject what is illogical. But best among them live life by the Golden Rule. (Christopher Hitchens) A friend in high school once said that a person does not need God in order to be Good. My back and brows arched stunned at the thought, still being under the stick of behavioral obedience. And in the sense of maturity, if a person is "good" only to not get punished for being "bad" then how good is that person in chaos? (Job) Then again, a different peer sneered that she looked up in the sky and didn't see any Father In Heaven, so there isn't one. As if her own limited vision is the ultimate reality to which we must conform. And yes, she's a perverted and pernicious authoritarian of the most twisted sort on earth, taking pleasure from directing destruction of life. "It is always the matter of the will, not the act." I think that we find many strengths from within our being. When the chips are down and times are darkest, we must have developed within ourselves the sure connection with "living" Light. The source of power to Love and to Know one's Self and others as Oneself emanates realization from within, to permeate our being. "Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." Luke 17:21 The Gospel of Philip illuminates what later militant fundamentalists (for worldly empire) purged to enforce a new orthodoxy through book burnings and conducting the genocide of an earliest Christian body of Gnostics. "And so [a person] dwells either in this world or in the resurrection or in the middle place. God forbid that I be found in the middle place! In this world, there is good and evil. [Those mix.] Its good things are not good, and its evil things not evil. But there is evil after this world which is truly evil - what is called "the middle". It is death. While we are in this world, it is fitting for us to acquire the resurrection, so that when we strip off the flesh, we may be found in rest and not walk in the middle. For many go astray on the way. For it is good to come forth from the world before one has sinned. Those who say they will die first and then rise are in error. If they do not first receive the resurrection while they live, when they die they will receive nothing. [Must be born of the Water and of the Spirit and be ready for the Wedding Feast.] "The world came about through a mistake. For he who created it wanted to create it imperishable and immortal. He fell short of attaining his desire. For the world never was imperishable, nor, for that matter, was he who made the world. For things are not imperishable, but sons are. Nothing will be able to receive imperishability if it does not first become a son. But he who has not the ability to receive, how much more will he be unable to give?" -- Gospel of Philip, Nag Hammadi Library Where one's treasure is, the heart is as well. Of course every person has the free will to see things as that person chooses, and to live with consequences. Matthew 7:13-14 (paths, gates, entry)
