Overnight Open Thread (2-19-2014)

Quote of the Day

Those who turn away from fighting evil need to be aware, that the notion of evil as dark is actually the opposite of the truth. Evil is so bright, that people can't stare at it with their eyes. It's blinding; so people look at other things. Instead of fighting evil, they fight carbon emissions.

-- Dennis Prager

The International Passions of Barrack Obama

In the years since his election, Obama has reacted strongly to only three international issues:  climate change, gay rights, and Libya.  The first two are pet issues of the Left.  As for Obama's enthusiasm about invading Libya . . . well, that continues to mystify me.  Obama's silence has been most pointed and damaging when it comes to naturally occurring democratic movements within a despotic state.

Always Descending Over the US But Fascism's Landing Strips Are Always in Europe

But hey it's not like Nazis are marching in Paris...oh wait never mind.

...people debating the issue of a resurgent anti-Semitism would resort in good faith to the reassuring remark that "after all, Nazis were not marching in Paris."

Since the Jour de Colère rally, even die-hard optimists must recognize that this is no longer true. Nazis are marching in Paris, unchecked.

Postmodern Nazis, to be sure: no brown shirts. But Nazis nevertheless - nazis who relish in anti-Jewish paranoia and are eager to spread it everywhere.

Radical politics usually develop when classic politics fail. According to an Ipsos/Steria poll published on January 21 by Le Monde, 8% of the French - only 8%! - trust the political parties. Only 23% trust their National Assembly representatives. Trade unions do not fare much better: 31%. Nor does the judiciary, at 46%.

Real confidence starts only with local powers: 63% of the French trust their mayors. The increase culminates with such last-resort players as the police and the army, credited, respectively, with a 73% and a 79% confidence rate.

Okay maybe these aren't your grandfather's Nazis but they are nationalistic, love socialism, hate Jews, and have excellent color-coordination.

German Union Threatens Tennessee Jobs

A German union representative on VW's board is threatening to withhold any further development in the South for the Tennessee workers not going along with the union program that their betters have chosen for them.

How Illinois Destroys Jobs

For 16 years, she and her husband, Stephen Briggs, have owned and operated a teacher supply store, Ergadoo, in Springfield.

They love their business, and it's making money, but they are shutting it down this week.

Why? They say the state of Illinois has made it too difficult to operate.

It's a painful decision for the couple who founded the store 16 years ago.
..."Five years ago, we received a sales tax audit from the state, and they said we were doing things just fine. And then we were audited again this year. And we were told we were doing things wrong. We can't operate if we don't know what the rules are."

For 10 days last month, a state auditor camped out at their store - sitting at one of those tiny little children's tables - reviewing three months of receipts.

And that's where the problem began.

You see, Ergadoo is the sort of business that has many nonprofits as customers - schools, churches, nurseries.

Those types of organizations don't have to pay sales taxes.

So, teachers, church secretaries and principals often come in bearing letters from the Illinois Department of Revenue declaring their organizations' sales tax exemptions.

Clause and her husband dutifully record the transaction - along with their tax exemption number.

Sounds good, right?

Well, no. The Revenue Department says that's not good enough.

Clause said the Revenue Department told her it's her store's responsibility to determine where the customer's money comes from.

"How am I supposed to prove if someone comes in with a $20 bill and a tax-exempt letter whether that money is from a school's petty cash fund or someplace else? I can't. No one can," Clause said.

Fast forward to an $8,000 tax bill on all the sales to people with tax-emption letters that the Briggs can't absolutely prove are truly tax-exempt and you can see why they're shutting down.

The Next Time They Say 9mm is an Inefficient Round.

You can call in the torso of one of the teens that Michael Dunn shot as an expert witness.

Arrow at lower left corner indicates point of entry. I guess the bullet is the one in the circles.

That is like what? Over 15 inches of soft tissue? That is not a shabby performance for an allegedly "poodle shooter" round.

Update: Andrew Branca points out in the comments: "that 15? of penetration diagonally through Jordan Davis thoracic cavity? That was AFTER first punching through both sides of an SUV door."

Key & Peele

So my Tivo decided I would like the show Key & Peele on Comedy Central. And you know what - it was right. Here K&P do their version of Shakespeare.

Ashton Kutcher Gets a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Okay Ashton Kutcher is guy I really want to hate...but honestly he hasn't done anything to merit it and in fact by most accounts he seems like a decent enough guy who's a better person than most of his Hollywood peers. So while he continually frustrates my gut spite I've come to grudgingly admire his non-assholiness.

Kutcher has been training with MMA badass Rigan Machado ... and last night in Beverly Hills, the "Two and a Half Men" star was promoted to a "two stripe blue belt" -- which means he's spent hundreds of hours on the mat learning all sorts of new techniques.
Also in the house ... UFC fighters Josh Barnett and Cub Swanson.  It appears Barnett was promoted to an instructor level.

Oh and guess what other Hollywood actor has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Ed O'Neill AKA Al Bundy that's who.

After being introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by his friend writer/director John Milius, O'Neill has trained in the martial art for 22 years under the mentoring of Rorion Gracie. In December 2007, O'Neill received his black belt. In the 2011 TV documentary I Am Bruce Lee, O'Neill states that he considers getting his black belt "the greatest achievement of my life, apart from my children."

74 The Minimum Wage and Crime Andrew Beauchamp1 / Stacey Chan2 Department of Economics, Boston College The B.E. Journal of Economic Analysis & Policy. February 2014 Abstract Does crime respond to changes in the minimum wage? A growing body of empirical evidence indicates that increases in the minimum wage have a displacement effect on low-skilled workers. Economic reasoning provides the possibility that disemployment may cause youth to substitute from legal work to crime. However, there is also the countervailing effect of a higher wage raising the opportunity cost of crime for those who remain employed. We use the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 cohort to measure the effect of increases in the minimum wage on self-reported criminal activity and examine employment–crime substitution. Exploiting changes in state and federal minimum wage laws from 1997 to 2010, we find that workers who are affected by a change in the minimum wage are more likely to commit crime, become idle, and lose employment. Individuals experiencing a binding minimum wage change were more likely to commit crime and work only part time. Analyzing heterogeneity shows those with past criminal connections are especially likely to see decreased employment and increased crime following a policy change, suggesting that reduced employment effects dominate any wage effects. The findings have implications for policy regarding both the low-wage labor market and efforts to deter criminal activity.

Shockingly, the young low-skill dudes with criminal records tend to turn to criminality when nobody will hire them at $10.10 an hour cause they don't know how to do anything that's worth paying $10.10 an hour.

104 I've got to say that I've very happy that Ace has top men working on his behalf -- Top. Men.

I had a vaguely analogous situation where we hired a contractor to do our kitchen and later found out that he may have spent as much time in courtrooms as he did on jobsites.

There are all these confusing procedural things, and general opacity, and -- in my case -- a complete loathing of the fetid swamp of patronage and cronyism that passes for a "judicial system" around here [....or, come to think of it, "government" -- except the local building codes guys, they're champs!]......it really makes it challenging to effectively do anything. But miscreants who repeatedly abuse the system get feel like they're on "home turf."

Looking at the job board at his shop, and making assumptions about lengths of jobs, it appeared that one-out-of-seven of his victims customers ended up in court the previous year. And each one of them had to go and figure everything out from scratch while this worm was asking the Court Clerk, "how're the boys doing in soccer, Jerry?"

110 The Detriment of Early Voting Early voting has become increasingly popular. In stead of everyone voting on the same day, up to a month is given in some states over which people can vote. In Nevada, for example, 2/3 of all votes were cast before election day. This is not the single voice of a people, even in the most fantastical sense of the Progressive utopians, when different people vote at different times according to the ever shifting opinions over a period of weeks or a month. 215 My wife has an A-bolt Medallion in .270 left hand. The rifle is now 30 years old, purchased new so these comments are probably obsolete. Machining is top notch, very smooth. Finish is way too shiny, IMO, for a hunting rifle. You might as well be carrying a mirror in the woods. Stock has a terminal warp to it that nothing has helped, kind of a disappointment, but likely a one off problem. .270 caliber doesn't work all that well in our brushy woods, and we don't have any real long distance shots here to take advantage of its trajectory. We are better off with .35 Rem here. Good luck on your search.

IIRC, children have a certain "language period" where they pick up their native tongue -- something like between two and five.....any parent can feel free to correct me here.

Anyhoo, the funny thing is, researchers found that kids can also pick up another language at the same time....or two other languages.....or even more -- and it didn't slow down the learning of their primary language or anything. The only catch? Each person they knew had to use one language consistently. So if the parents spoke English, the grandparents Chinese, the playground kids French, and shopkeepers Urdu -- the kid could learn them all simultaneously just as fast as a kid learning only one language.

I used to own, before the tragic boating accident, an A Bolt Stainless Stalker in 7mm Rem Mag. It shoots, er, used to shoot 1/2 groups. It has, er, had the BOSS muzzle adjustment. The best rifle I've ever owned.

253 Y'all see where in Washington state gay marriage has become mandatory? All who signed up for civil unions before marriage was allowed have now had those civil unions turned into marriage by the state whether you like it or not. I wonder if there were any who were actually legally married to a man, while having a civil union with a woman. And now are a criminal via state action.

256 I'd be more than happy to be wrong here, but the way Canada's been playing I could easily see them finishing fourth overall. I know what you mean. Canada's having a hard time putting the puck in the net and the U.S. is looking solid,...although I could see it turning out to be a good game because if will be a bunch of great NHLers playing another group of great NHLers who will all say fuck that to the larger Eurotrash ice surface.

That schmuck further declares that one has a "right to die" and how dare anyone interfere with a guardians power to exercise the "right" by proxy by committing homicide.

352 331 I'm having a little e-mail discussion with someone who declares that a guardian had the power to excercise the "will" and "right" of a child or handicapped person do die by euthanasia, under the misguided guise of "individual sovereignty."

That they laugh about how BeNeLux doctors kill the handicapped (including those who can lead a happy and wonderful life) as being to big deal because their parents though offing their kid was spiffy, and most infuriating.

That schmuck further declares that one has a "right to die" and how dare anyone interfere with a guardians power to exercise the "right" by proxy by committing homicide.

There is some nuance there, Hat -- despite a great huge reluctance to concede the slightest anything to a barking-mad death-cult. There was a movie I recall slightly -- something like "The Adventures of Waldo Pepper" -- where there is a guy who two scenes back was talking about his great fear of fire who gets in a plane wreck (a little biplane sort of thing a la 1920s). Rescuers get to him just as the plane catches fire, and when they cannot get him free of the wreckage, one of them shoots him in mercy.

I think I was about 12 when I encountered this, but the overall outline stuck with me as an example of the sort of circumstances where euthanasia might be the best of many difficult choices. I sure as hell wouldn't leave it to the discretion of doctors or government.

His cultures are all coming back negative, so it looks like septicemia is out too. At this point it looks like a massively bad case of cellulitis. He had been retaining a lot of fluid in his lower legs and feet. It was getting worse and worse and they think the infection was there. He's on antibiotics for the infection and heavy dose diuretics to drain the fluid. I saw him today. The swelling was waaaaay down, but his legs looked like someone took a baseball bat to them. Crimson red from ankle to knee. Doc says that'll turn black and blue over the next few days. His legs are still in a lot of pain, so they've got him on morphine, which means he's zonked out a lot of the time. He's got a ways to go, but he's getting better. Thanks for asking.

In the scene you mentioned, the injured pilot is trapped in the wreckage when it catches fire, and starts screaming, "Don't let me burn!" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073075/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Posted by: cthulhu at February 20, 2014 12:28 AM (T1005) My major problem is that the rules that only someone "terminally ill" or "insufferable pain" have already been so massively ignored that any handicapped child can be killed with impunity. The "compassionate end to suffering" has already been proven to be a sick, sick joke. My sister has Down's syndrome. There was an instance where she (as well as my other sibling and myself) could have been taken away quite unjustly and put in the hands of some guardian. She is happy and a far better person than most people. I have taught and coached handicapped kids and would rate them and far more worthy of anything than most people. But under the whims of BeNeLux doctors who sickeningly seem to worship "Action T4" we see kids with slight handicaps killed in the name of mercy. Those kids did not choose that. Nor should anyone be recognized to have the right to choose that for those kids. NO ONE had the right to kill, or have killed, anyone else (self-defense aside). Sure, there might be "strict limits" declared, but those "strict limits," have already been proven to be a sick, sick joke.

Posted by: garrett at February 20, 2014 01:05 AM (pL47n) Heck, I remember when there wasn't a late game on Hockey Night in Canada. You had the obligatory Leafs game at 5:30 p.m. (I grew up in the Mountain Time Zone) and by 8:30 you had no more hockey for the evening unless the schedule worked your way. The advent of the late HNIC game was a big deal.

422 407 I hope you understand that I am profoundly sympathetic and well understand your point....but feel that the problem is more in the lawlessness surrounding the laws than in the laws themselves. You could craft a statute with the best of intentions (not that I think many statutes have that) in the most thoughtful of ways (not that I think many statutes have that) that would perfectly elucidate (not that I think many statutes have that) the most noble of principles (oh, crud....ntitmsht)....and, still, those evil bastard death-worshippers would use it to slay the innocent.

OK.....among lawyers today, it is fashionable to refer to refer to anonymous parties as female. Because: transgressive! Seriously, it used to be taught in schools that parties of no particular gender could be referred to as "he", but it's now stylish to say otherwise.

That meant that Ace got some ribbing about 'her' finer frillies....which started turning into a 'thang'....so Ace shut the comments down early for the "I got BK's own lawyer to take my case against BK" post. On of the later contributors to that 'thang' was T9....who didn't get banned, but got belligerent enough for Maet to suggest he seek out Bl@zer for some soul-searching upthread.

Was shocked when I read the numbers of V-1s that were launched against England and the damage/casualties inflicted.  Had always thought it was much smaller.

Anna Puma - one day at that museum where I volunteer, a guy walks in and says he's working on a book about a secret Corsair squadron (Vought F-4U) that was set up specifically to do anti-V1 duty over the Channel.  Obviously would have been the only Corsairs to see duty in the ETO.  Based at NAS El Centro (might have had a different designation then - base is still there, winter home to the Blue Angels, who hold their first show there each year first Sat. in March), the unit had not finished preparations when the Allied offensives in Europe over-ran the V1 launching sites, mooting their mission (as I recall his spiel).  Haven't heard from him since or looked for his book.

Just thought I'd share that bit of WWII aviation esoterica/rumint.

Oh - and Obama's foreign policy passions?  We are so far beyond burlesque and poorly written fantasy in the degradation of our great nation, esp. as it concerns foreign policy/national security, that I have been without words for years.  And I was one who knew many of the Clinton-era principals and subs quite well and was appalled that THEY were anywhere near levers of power.

Only remaining concern is that the national decline will be mirrored in the military - even under Bush lots of idiotic stuff flourished in the brass, and of course now it is incomparably worse.  Only moment of public emotion I can recall for years now is the CNO who spit nails while nastily declaring that anyone who wasn't ecstatic about the end of DADT needed to leave the service.  Following the still-incredible Casey message after Ft. Olympics.  Have not watched a minute of "televised" coverage.  Only streaming on my laptop.  Fantastic.  Not one minute of the idiotic American TV folks (have only heard echoes of that stuff here).  Have no idea if the streaming for things like figure skating and freestyle skiing are similarly blessed by the absence of the distinctively bad American Olympics coverage, as I haven't sampled them.

I only watch the few things that interest me:  biathlon & x-country, hockey, ski-jumping, downhill, bobsled, speed-skating.

Very impressed with how "watchable" biathlon is now, with (usually) informed commentators and 20 cameras.  Downright dramatic, with the shooting having the ability to suddenly drop the leader 10 spaces.

Kind of wish I'd gone to Sochi.  Have the language, love winter sports, and have not spent any time on that side of the Caucasus down south.  Thought about it but fear of $$$$ usually associated with the Olympics always prevented any serious research.

And now social service agencies are bringing undesirables to their neighborhood and they're turning all NIMBY. Small consolation for the damage they've wrought with their reflexively 'progressive' policies, but hey, whatta ya gonna do?

There's no registrations or paywalls in front of it. 530 I rarely mention it anymore, but to this day I still get dozens of emails every week -- usually several per day -- from angry Muslims (often wanting to kill me) over the Mohammed Image Archive. It's been, what, 8 years since I put it online, and they still can't handle it. If they knew who I was, or where I lived, they probably would kill me and my family. I just checked my email and, as usual, got another one just now. Pretty mild compared to some of the others: "From: Mohammad Muzammil Ahmed Date: February 19, 2014 9:49:53 PM PST To: mohammeddepictions@zombietime.com Fear Allah and the day when there is no one to protect you. Believe in one god (Allah), and Muhammad sallahu alai hi wa sallam is his messenger." Imagine getting these every time you checked your mail, for 8 years straight. "Outing" is not a funny internet game, as Ace knows better than anyone -- it is life-or-death. The left knows this. They want to out us not because anyone on the left has the balls to kill us, but because they can trust their violent fellow America-haters in Islam to do the dirty work for them. Sigh. As always, I'm off to check his IP, to make sure he's from somewhere distant, so I don't have to worry. 98% of the time, they are.

Let me just start with the "blame the victim" nonsense. You know damned well that 'the code' is to shrug off the bruises and the scrapes....but if anyone is HURT, play stops. That has nothing to do with thin or thick skin -- I don't blame you for what you were doing last night, but I saw WDS was getting really hurt by it and called upon your sense of decency to stop.

Second, she ignored your "funnin'" bullshit because she was HURT. Funnin' doesn't matter to a hurt person.

And, third, if you actually read the thread while sober....we were talking about a very sensitive topic that literally involves life, death, and who we are....when you started "jumpin' funny" all over things.

Seriously, I could tell that she was becoming increasingly distressed, and did my best to keep you from making it worse -- and I need nothing from you for myself.....but I would expect you to get square with her for the basic human decency due another moron.

On the other hand there was widespread speculation just last November that Kutcher was a closet conservative based on some of his recent speeches.

I don't know where his political beliefs really lie but if his worst crime is just being a kool-aid -chugging liberal, that still puts him in the upper tier of Hollywood types.

547 Awake again.

Cthulhu, are you using something to quote posts or doing it by hand? It seems it might be for the best to not include the bit created by the ignore script.

We have water again, mostly. As they were getting ready to go and testing everything, they discovered that there was an additional hot water line for a couple locations upstairs that they didn't find previously. So they need to come back in the morning for that last bit.

The driers are still running in the kitchen downstairs, so everything is still covered in a layer of dirt and we don't have the oven back yet. But just having working toilets is a really major upgrade. That constant rumble in the background from the driers is pretty annoying, like being next door to an aircraft engine maintenance facility that runs around the clock.

It would be a really good time to have an out of town job for a few days but Instead I have nothing at all this week, making it both terribly boring and anxiety laden. I'm looking but everything I come across is impossibly far away for an ongoing commute.

551 There were no decent girly pictures on the ONT tonight. So, does that mean that molasses tomorrow will bring forth cognac and that John has a long mustache? Is this omission the signal that we should take our over-the-hill asses out to the front lines and show them what "change" is really built upon? Gosh, I hope not. I like these soft winter days of my life, and the bourbon that I denied myself as a youth. I will wait one more day for girly pictures before I make any rash decisions.

I made a couple of posts that made it appear as if her posts were not appearing. Posted by: yankeefifth at February 20, 2014 02:44 AM (rDidD) Glancing back at the thread, my sense is that after the "hide posts widget" comment was posted you soon after cracked a joke that was taken by WDS as "Oh, no, did I get some sort of banning?" Then you dug the hole a bit. I understand the perspectives of both sides. Those who have been around long enough know that your posts are there for good unless they're deleted, and the "hide posts" thing is relatively unknown and not a regular pixy feature. On the other hand, I can also see how your comment could be easily taken as "No one cares about what I say," which is a distressing thought.

Y-5 was funnin' around, I get that, and I don't blame him for that. But even when you are doing something lawful, and ethical, and moral, and fun.....you need to have a reasonable understanding of what that means to people. And, truly, it has been on my mind A LOT lately -- the left love to turn this into "if your words can be construed to be offensive to me, even if the rationale is batshit insane, you should be censored" -- but the fact of the matter is that we had a small group on the ONT, and one among our number was in distress, and stuff Y-5 was doing was making things worse.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Ace's post about 20% might have been sparked by his 36,000-foot overview of the situation.

During the period in question people explained how the Hide Comments thingy worked to WDS so it should have clear that she wasn't blocked and that Yankeefifth was playing around with her. If she was in distress for some reason, it wasn't obvious from her comments on the ONT.

What might be missing is the realization that some people have a lot of reason recently to be concerned about unintended hurt feelings and where it can lead. It's one thing to read about a tragedy and another to have been there trying to intervene while it went down. People are going to feel bruised and extra cautious for a good while.

I have enough problems just functioning as an adult human. That post today from Ace brought home that some people are going through a lot of pain while trying to hold at bay those who would do harm to all.

Sounds like it will apply to "internet content" as well as Newsrooms.

If you didn't see Greta or Megyn Kelly tonight...I'm talking about this new FCC policy of installing agents in Newsrooms to spy on them.

To "monitor" their content.

Greta was gobsmacked about it.

Remember, these people still bear grudges over battles that didn't go their way in the 14th Century. Keeping up the crazy within their own lifetime is no effort for them. They've made murderous resentment almost an autonomic nervous function.

Allahpundit maintains his as well, though he could probably get a bunch of facetime (and $$$) on conservative media like his pal Ed.

People that post here value their anonymous status as well for the most part. Some could lose their jobs if their identities were known to their bosses.

I'm sure zombie recognized the lifetime importance of it before tackling mooslim taboos.

As to Ashton, eff him. Obot. I don't hate him, but I also don't want to put any bucks in his pocket if I can avoid it.

In which case the problem would soon solve itself.

It sounds like the connection to your ISP is a bit shaky. Often if you lose power or have to reset your modem you'll get the same address, as it is on a lease to your modem's MAC address. But this can vary greatly among ISPs and conditions.

Posted by: cthulhu at February I have no idea how those are contradictory? I did not ever deny the validity of her concerns, I did not even question them, you asked me to stop and I did, simply because I thought you were aware of something I was unaware of - it was respectful of you and her, unquestioningly so. as for the pain, in the comments viewable on last evenings thread I did not see anything easily identifiable as pain. maybe someone who was mildly perplexed by comments say her comments were and were not visible. how would I let wds know anything? 638 So, Jack Reacher. Aside from the lovely Ms. Pike and her lack of... screen time, I have two problems with the movie: 1) The main character is too strong. I find if the main character is too competent in every area, he comes across as less believable. 2) I have problems with the theme of just executing the old guy at the end. I am sorry, but that is not justice. That guy was just a tool. An evil, whacked out tool, but a tool none the less. Justice would be going after the bastards who had their hands on that tool, so to speak. An entertaining movie though.

667 On the lighter side of things, last night I did a little reading on EMP. I saw a story on Drudge saying that the Iranian ships just outside our waters was possibly a prelude to trying an emp attack when they have the bomb. What is interesting is how little we know about what would happen. Most of their theories are based on the atomic testing way back during the days of atmospheric testing. Most of the stuff that I read seemed to say that while a Dark Ages scenario is very unlikely, one where no major disruption occurs is also unlikely. As far as I understood the material, they were saying that wire length is key. The longer the wire or cable carrying power (or data I suppose) the more susceptible the machines are on either end of that cable to damage. So a small electronic device might be safe (very short wire length) while power lines could have issues. Cars were supposed to be ok if they had primarily metal body panels since they also have relatively short wire lengths and the metal would provide shielding for the electronics. Interesting stuff, and scary because almost all of it is theoretical on a big scale.

OK, fine -- I'm taking this personally. I  think Y5 was being a shit because he didn't treat WDS right. It didn't matter why or how she was upset, she deserved to be comforted and not provoked. That said, I respect Y5 as a fellow moron and wish him all the best. And will unban his ass as soon as I can figure out that part of the script.

670 A good pre-morning from the middle of the continent. "The ONT does not rise and fall on any single moron or moronette." This I see as I peek back in before even getting coffee. Hm. Did I miss anything? or something? on the way to barely making the triple-six, besides, people!? Well, #1 was well-said, I thought. "Friendliest relaxed sleezy dodgy biker bar on the internet" is just not snappy enough to replace Smart Military Blog, though. Needs a snappy acronym.

676 "If you need wisdom-If you want to know what God wants you to do-ask him and he will gladly tell you." James 1:5 Doing what God wants is a wonderful thing. It honors God, adds joy to your life, and can make a positive difference in the world. However, knowing what God wants you to do in any given situation isn't always clear. Reading the Bible gives guidelines, but knowing how to apply what you learn takes more than just diligence and good intentions. It takes discernment. Discernment is the ability to make decisions when you're facing difficult circumstances. God holds and endless supply of the wisdom we need to be discerning.. In the original language, the author James uses words that identify God with a banker. James explained then our own supply of wisdom falls short God will offer us from His abundant supply. Unlike stingy moneylenders who would belittle those who who would belittle those who needed to rely on their services, James said that God is more than happy to share all that he has with you-at no interest. This isn't a promise that God will give us a windfall of wisdom the first time we ask for it. The word "ask" actually means to keep on asking. By continually turning to God for wisdom every time we need help, we learn to discern the right thing to so when the pressure is on. Instead of God giving us an exact blueprint of what he wants for our lives, he draws us closer to him by supplying what we need when we need it when we rely on him. 681 *sigh* Last 1 sent autonomically. Should say link in nic. I think I'll go back to bed and try starting this day over. Seriously, though, forty years of seeking God's will, begging to know and do God's will, trying to discipline the mind to accept God's will, whatever that might mean, but not yet having clue one what that will might mean for me, meanwhile everything good in life spirals out of control... it's a strange answer. I hope there'll be a good explanation. If I live to hear it, that will be good enough.

Richard Neill Donovan remarks in his reflection on this hymn: We need the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, living within us –– guiding us –– inspiring us –– helping us to live the kind of life that God created us to live. 683 What is interesting is how little we know about what would happen. Most of their theories are based on the atomic testing way back during the days of atmospheric testing. I seem to recall they had some issues with traffic signals on Hawaii which was quite a distance from the testing area. A relatively short run of wires on the island, because the island is small. The USA is big. I also recall that there was a huge coronal mass ejection back in the days of telegraph machines and some people got seriously hurt from the voltage jump. A single wire on a pole stretched three quarters of the way across the country. There are ways to protect our wiring, but they cost money. On a per household cost I seem to recall estimates in the range of $10.00. I don't think that would be an unreasonable one time charge. Some people on the left think that EMP 'believers' are whack jobs. I don't agree. It's not just an EMP event that could take down the grid.

685 One other thing about a jolt to the grid from an EMP or coronal mass ejection. Imagine a dry winters day and you walk across carpeting and touch metal. Shocking. Imagine a short walk, intentionally dragging your feet and the power accumulated -- picture Hawaii. Then picture a much longer walk, intentionally dragging your feet, that would be the wires stretched across the USA. Big difference.

686 would very much like to open your link, but it's not working. :^) I know times are tough but I seriously think the more time we spend on here-and don't take a break-the more we think it's spiraling out of control. We wouldn't know some of this stuff if it weren't on here-and I spend too much time on here as well (but not yesterday. Hooray!) it feeds the anxiety. What can we do to not feed the anxiety? I'm not perfect person, an entirely non anxious presence :^) but I feel more centered when I'm in quiet and do breath prayers. Some monks went in because they were having health problems related-stress and anxiety. It turns out for whatever reason, the regular routine of lengthy services and times in silence were disrupted-I forget why- but when they went back to their regular routine-the stress and anxiety lessened. Perhaps that's why when God speaks to Elijah (1 Kings 19:1- it's in the silence. And if you've lived your life following God, God will be faithful. Did God disappear because of chaos in the Jewish community? Kingdoms rise, Kingdoms fall. God does not.

691

Looks like this will get lost in the shuffle of comments at #694 and counting but here we go...

On that hat map of naval forces in the area I only see one or two ships that would have been likely to have any sort of special operators onboard, so to speak: GUN and ENT. Listing the PCs, Minesweeps, Ammo ships and oilers is kind of like saying if we tape enough bottle rockets together we can get to the moon. I don't mean to disparage, and this is coming from a PC officer, but what capability would the PC use against an insurgent attack XX miles inland in Benghazi? None. Unless someone were to send in the VBSS team tell them to hike XX miles through the city. Which is retarded, sir.

Similar stories can be said of the DDGs and CGs in the area. Unless someone were on the ground directing tactical T-hawk strikes their presence is somewhat of a moot point. The best you would hope for would be perhaps the FAST teams could use their helo-decks as a lillypad if they're not on a CH-53 or a Chinook, which they probably were.

So we're talking maybe ENT who happened to be on the right side of the SOH could make best spead East towards Bab-al-Mandeb and the Red Sea, and then go over whomever's airspace with their FAST team. Getting their aircraft within that kind of range would likely take upwards of 10-15hrs+ I am guessing of straight steaming through the ocean alone, not to mention flight times of said a/c.

I am just saying that listing THOSE naval forces in the area is kind of a nonsequitor and a little irrelevant. What we should focus on are the FAST teams and other special operators that were spinning up and getting on aircraft in the Med ready to launch and kick some ass. I imagine there were plenty of bad men on our team ready, willing and able to get into the fight. They simply would not have been on the ships you listed.
