Overnight Open Thread (2-23-2014)

That's the thing about Ragnarok - it's so damn hard to predict.

Remembering the 1986 FBI Shootout

The 1986 shootout was a gun battle in the Miami area between 8 FBI agents and two bank robbery suspects that they were attempting to arrest. It lasted less than five minutes but resulted in the death of two FBI agents and nearly all the rest of the agents were seriously injured before the suspects were killed.

Since then it has become well-known in the shooting community and is still widely studied by law enforcement. Analysis of the fight led to the FBI's switch to the 10mm round (and later the .40 S&W) as well as changes in FBI and police tactics.

The 1986 FBI Miami shootout was a gun battle that occurred on April 11, 1986 in an unincorporated region of Dade County in south Florida (renamed Miami-Dade on November 13, 1997) between eight FBI agents and two serial bank robbers. During the firefight, FBI Special Agents Jerry L. Dove and Benjamin P. Grogan were killed, while five other agents were wounded. The two robbery suspects, William Russell Matix and Michael Lee Platt, were also killed.

The incident is infamous in FBI history and is well-studied in law enforcement circles. Despite outnumbering the suspects 4 to 1, the agents found themselves pinned down by rifle fire and unable to respond effectively. Although both Matix and Platt were hit multiple times during the firefight, Platt fought on and continued to injure and kill agents. This incident led to the introduction of more powerful handguns in the FBI and many police departments around the United States.

The FBI agents were on a rolling stakeout based on a hunch that the suspects would return for another bank holdup and still be driving a black Monte Carlo seen at a previous robbery. When the car was spotted on the morning of April 11 the agents attempted to make a felony traffic stop.

But what they didn't know was that the two robbers, Platt and Matix, were well armed with a shotgun, Mini-14, multiple pistols, had spent considerable time training with them, and that both were ex-military (Platt had been an Army Ranger and Matix was a former Army MP). The suspects immediately started shooting at the agents and despite being shot multiple times (Platt 12 times, Matix 6 times) including some mortal wounds, they kept firing and nearly wiped out the agents. Only the actions of Agent Mireles stopped the attack and saved the other agents.

Since then there has been wide-spread analysis of the gun fight including tactical failures on the part of the agents as well as deficiencies in the caliber and model of the guns they used. Here is an FBI internal training video that has a recreation of the incident as well interviews in which the agents describe their actions during the shootout, what they experienced as well lessons learned from the incident. Agent Mireles' concluding statement is something that everyone who might ever be in a life-or-death situation should take to heart.

Piers Morgan Is Out

CNN's president, Jeffrey Zucker, has other problems, but none bigger than Mr. Morgan and his plum 9 p.m. time slot. Mr. Morgan said last week that he and Mr. Zucker had been talking about the show's failure to connect and had decided to pull the plug, probably in March.

...Although a change has long been rumored, it was the first time that both he, and the CNN executives I talked to, acknowledged that his nightly show was on the way out. Plans for a replacement at the 9 o'clock hour are still underway, but Mr. Morgan and the network are in talks about him remaining at CNN in a different role.

And WeaponsMan reminds us of exactly how sleezy and possibly criminal Piers is - and that's by Fleet Street standards. Why CNN thought Morgan was a prize worthy of importing across the Atlantic is one of the great mysteries.

It's not surprising that he expects the worst of other people: his personal history is replete with examples of bad behavior. He probably knows that he shouldn't be trusted with a gun. While editor of the Daily Mirror, he used the stock tips in an investing column to advance his personal fortune through insider training (Morgan saved himself by flipping on his own columnists, who were fired and ultimately convicted; at least one did time in prison. Profile in courage, that). Also at the Mirror, his personal anti-military agenda led him to publish fabricated photographs of nonexistent "tortures"  by soldiers of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment. When his crudely faked photos were exposed and the entire publishing firm was feeling the heat, Morgan refused to apologize for the fraud he committed. So they fired him.

The scandal that may take him down before CNN gets around to firing him and replacing him with something more popular, like hantavirus, is generally called the Phone Hacking scandal. Morgan was questioned by an inquiry into the systematic hacking of voicemails and mobile phones by reporters under his management. He certainly knew about it, including how to do it; other reporters testify that he taught methods to them while he was an editor.

John Kerry: We 'Should Not Allow' Open Debate on Climate Change

You'd think that hearing a cabinet member calling for the end of discourse would be something a reporter with access to Kerry might want to follow up on. What exactly does he mean by "should not allow"? Perhaps we can imagine this going down in alternative historical form - Donald Rumsfeld said "we" should not allow "any room for those who think that the costs associated with doing the right in Iraq outweigh the benefits" - and move forward from there.

Given his 40+ year track record on issues Kerry really has no standing to criticize anyone else's positions.

NYT: Ha Ha Die You Silly Warmening Deniers

your-destiny-248x300

And James Delingpole Dr. Roy Spencer isn't going to take it anymore:

When politicians and scientists started calling people like me "deniers", they crossed the line. They are still doing it.

They indirectly equate (1) the skeptics' view that global warming is not necessarily all manmade nor a serious problem, with (2) the denial that the Nazi's extermination of millions of Jews ever happened.

Too many of us for too long have ignored the repulsive, extremist nature of the comparison. It's time to push back.

I'm now going to start calling these people "global warming Nazis".

Mexico to Trump Japan as No. 2 Car Exporter to US

Mexico is on track to become the United States' No. 1 source of imported cars by the end of next year, overtaking Japan and Canada in a manufacturing boom that's turning the auto industry into a bigger source of dollars than money sent home by migrants.

...An $800 million Honda plant that opened Friday in the central state of Guanajuato will produce more than 200,000 Fit hatchbacks and compact sport-utility vehicles a year, helping push total Mexican car exports to the U.S. to 1.7 million in 2014, roughly 200,000 more than Japan, consulting firm IHS Automotive says. And with another big plant starting next week, Mexico is expected to surpass Canada for the top spot by the end of 2015.

Of course I can't help but think of this ad.

Why Ashley Wagner Is Wrong About Figure Skating

I know nothing about figure skating and only know Ashley Wagner because she's cute and because of the pictures of her shock over low scores from the judges. But this writer points that Wagner's claims of being 'gypped' don't really hold up and that acting on her complaints about the sport's scoring would end up making the sport a bore.

All the stories say Wagner skated two very clean programs, landing all of her jumps, and never falling. It's true that she didn't fall, but she certainly didn't skate cleanly as anyone who knows the sport could see. In the short program she touched her second foot down on her triple toe. In the long program she two-footed and under-rotated the landing of her crucial opening combination.

Before the scores even came in commentator Tara Lipinski noted, "To the audience it may look perfect, but when the judges go back and examine those landings she's going to lose a lot of points."

"A few shaky landings, a few issues here and there, landing on two feet," said Johnny Weir. "But it wasn't a flying endorsement of Ashley Wagner."

...Dumbing down skating this way to create a fan base would make it boring. We should want just the opposite of what she's suggesting: A sport where someone can fall down and still score above someone who skates clean. Because when Mao Asada falls on a beautiful triple axel, a jump only five or six women have ever landed in competition, but skates the rest of her program beautifully, she is a badass.

20 Andrew Branca has a piece on Legal Insurrection, http://networkedblogs.com/U6fb2 The story goes like this. Black off duty cop with his family, makes left hand turn in front of big white guy with friend in car. White guy pissed, acts like ass road raging. Cop stops on side of road after white guy threw something at his car, white guy stops too walks back toward cop (supposedly) threatening him. Cop shoots. Maryland has big time duty to retreat, cop gets indicted for MURDER ONE. Reverend Al and Jesse both change their position on stand your ground. Btw, I'm in the cops corner on this, he was guilty of making a driving mistake, but the other dude was most definitely acting in a very threatening manner.

86 54 On the cop shooting...
It depends on the distance I think

I read Andrea's write up and it looks like it's over the 21' rule

The cop never made an attempt to retreat therefore yeah, murder imo Posted by: Navycopjoe at February 23, 2014 10:56 PM (KpjMV) Hide posts from (KpjMV)

The cop had already tried to drive away, and the other guy pursued. The cop then parked, and the other guy parked and closed on foot. How much retreating is necessary? Get back in the car? That didn't work before. Move away from the car? Yeah, that's safe.

I'd look more at the angle of the shot -- if the other guy's entrance and exit wounds show that he was still closing, I'm not seeing murder.

98 I nearly posted this in the previous open thread, then stopped and checked for the ONT. I've been off reading about early World War I airplanes. Many of us are familiar with the more famous planes that appeared later in the war, such as the SPADs, Fokkers, and Sopwiths. But I was interested in looking up some of the planes that were in service at the war's beginning. This was cutting-edge technology for its time, and the new tactics were being made up as they went along. It was only a decade after the Wright Brothers' first flight. Here is the French Voisin III. It was one of the first purpose-built bombers, and more than 800 of them were built. First is a real one in a Paris museum: http://tinyurl.com/ljqqjaj Here is a 1/32 scale scratch-built model: http://tinyurl.com/jvtwzte Although it was not intended as a fighter, it made history on October 5, 1914 when it became the first plane to shoot down another plane in aerial combat, a German Aviatik B.II observation plane. That plane's crew were armed with rifles. If you look at the photos, you can see that the cockpit was large. That was because it carried a crew of two. The pilot sat underneath the machine gun, while the gunner stood behind him. That's right, STOOD in an open cockpit. Some of them had an additional rear-facing gun mounted on the top wing. At this early stage, they had not yet developed a method of firing a gun through the spinning propeller blades without hitting them. In the model photos, you can see the bombs hanging in racks on either side of the cockpit. Just the thought of building a model like that makes my brain itch, but I'm glad somebody did it. What a magnificent work of art.

Seeing multiple videos of the local po-po beating on random suspects and SWAT raiding and shooting up the wrong house (full of children) here in the people's republic of smug and the land of DFL definitely turned my attitude.  By the way, the SWAT guys all got commendations for the raid.  Minneapolis paid out $14 million over the last 7 years for police brutality and misbehavior.

154 Tight parking at a swap meet this morning. We followed someone going to their car, which was just behind one other searcher for a space. That guy backs up (bad form!) to contest for it. My hubby is form Jersey and a veteran of New York City traffic. He out-maneuvers the backtracker, and gets the spot. When we returned to our car after the swap meet, my husband saw his side window and had a good horse laugh. There in the dust, enscribed in soft rounded letters, is the word WUSS. Wuss? Dude, seriously. Of all the rich treasury of invective English holds, you go with that? And considering that you were mildly cheating in the sport of parking vultures, and that you were still outclassed and bested, that's better read as a confession than an indictment.

169 I just read that Alec Baldwin is flouncing out of public life with a written diatribe only a passive-aggressive narcissist could write.::sad face playing saddest of trombones, he is returning to LA to become an actor or something behind a gate::

Also! If not for paparazzi of TMZ accusing him falsely, and Breitbart and FOX he was going to run for public office in five years in NYC. Do New Yorkers realize how close they came to this cliff?

Between reading this and that Piers guy getting the boot, well, a good day.

There was nothing she could have done about it. She's blessed to walk away because when she hit that wall it looked much too much like Dale Sr.'s crash. I can't remember who started that crash but before it was over, 12 cars were involved. It was Dillon in the #3 car that was the issue tonight. He was involved in 3 accidents tonight and caused 2 of them.

Judging by the twin 40mm Bofors in the picture, this was taken after August 1942. Which means this carrier could be Enterprise or Hornet. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at February 23, 2014 11:22 PM (T0LzR) That is a nice picture. One time in the late 80s, I went to a used book store. I saw an entire wall of WWII Life magazines, from floor to ceiling. Shelf upon shelf, all in bundles tied with string. I don't believe I have ever seen a more shocking sight in my whole life. As I stood there stunned, trying to wrap my brain around what I was seeing, the owner said that they were already spoken for and were being readied for shipment to a collector in Japan. I was seriously thinking of going to the bank, emptying my account (which was pretty meager back then) and buying as many of them as I could.

I've got a Linksys/Cisco EA 4500, which has had its frustrating moments. It is fast enough, but you have to go through a web-based configurator that seriously makes me feel compromised -- and, yes, that means you have to use insecure web tools to harden your security against potential miscreants on the web. Here's a decent article on it: makeuseof.com/tag/ddwrt-router-superrouter/ Unfortunately for Carol, that one Linksys WRT-100 is one of the few that can't use it.

270 PapaJohns has a cheeseburger pozza that looks absolutely fricking disgusting. *** I tweeted about it last weekend. I ordered it but was so skeptical that I ordered a backup pizza, just in case. I also ordered a cinnapie and a 2-liter pepsi. With delivery tip it was more than $40 which I didn't mind because I love leftover pizza. Everything expect the pepsi went into the trash. The cheeseburger pizza was disgusting. Pickles! On a pizza?! So, I pulled the pickles off and still couldn't eat it because the sauce was just awful. It tasted like a combo of mayo, ketchup, and vinegar. AND, the backup pizza was awful. It was overcooked and dry, as was the cinnapie. So, yes. I threw away $40 worth of inedible food. I will not be ordering from them again.

329 I've studied the 1986 Miami shootout extensively. Lots of mistakes were made by the FBI, sure, but Platt and Matix were a toxic combination of murderous evil and ferocity no one would really expect. It's a weird (and fortunately rare) phenomenon really, the way two losers combine to form a single, incredibly dangerous and volatile homicidal maniac: Platt and Matix, Hickok and Smith, Leopold and Loeb. Platt was still moving and shooting even after Agent Jerry Dove severed Platt's brachial artery with a 9 mm early in the fight, with the bullet stopping just short of the heart. Platt had, at most, a few minutes of remaining consciousness before he would've bled out. The FBI drew the conclusion that the calibers used weren't big enough. I would argue, based on the numerous other gunshot wounds Platt received noted in the coroner's report, that Platt would've kept going even if he had been shot multiple times with a 10 mm or a .45 ACP. The bravery of Agent Mireles was awe-inspiring, and that--to me--is the most worthwhile takeaway from that bloody encounter. Courage is beautiful.

333 The phone hacking was the weakest form of hacking ever. It's just that the cell phones used a default PIN to access voicemails, so if you didn't change it, it was 1234 or something stupid --- for everybody. So they just called the voicemail and "hacked" it by entering the default 1234 PIN that a huge % of people are too lazy to change. Still wrong, but the weakest "hacking" possible.

Anybody who likes heat in their food and is looking for a very quick recipe, I made Chipotle Chicken Tortilla Soup today and it was easy as pie and very good:

Heat 1 tbsp. of canola oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add 2 tsps. of bottled minced garlic and a pound of chicken breast tenders, which you have cut into bite-sized pieces. Saute for 2 minutes and then add a tsp (or more) of chipotle chili powder and a tsp (or more) of cumin. Stir it up and add 1 cup of water, a 1/2 tsp of salt, 1 14 oz can of chicken broth and 1 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes. Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Top with a cup of crushed tortilla chips and cilantro (if you like it) and squeeze a little lime in the bowls. 4 servings.

I added a little hot sauce in my bowl, but that's because I'm insane. The next time I make it - which will be soon - I'll double the recipe and throw in a can or two of pinto beans, since I like stewy soups.

366 Kerry initially told an officer that she might have mistakenly taken Ambien instead of her thyroid medication. Then, four days later, she stood outside the tiny Town of North Castle Justice Court in Armonk — the case has since moved to roomier quarters in White Plains — and announced that her doctors believed she suffered a “complex partial seizure” at the time of the wreck, caused by an earlier head injury. Wrong. Toxicology test results revealed that Kerry had ingested zolpidem tartrate, the generic term for Ambien. Her lawyers now contend that she innocently mixed up her pills. Kerry is president of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. But how effective is she at righting planetary wrongs? It turns out that Uganda’s gays never faced certain death.

Posted by: thunderb at February 23, 2014 08:52 PM (zOTsN)

367 When Kerry and members of her crew met with President Museveni on Jan. 18, he told the activists he would not sign a “fascist” anti-gay bill into law. Then he changed his mind. Museveni said through a spokesman on Feb. 14 that he intended to sign the bill “to protect Ugandans from social deviants.” President Obama condemned the measure. If convicted, Kerry could be sentenced to up to a year in jail, but a legal source said she’d likely be ordered by a judge to perform community service. Kerry plans to testify in her own defense at trial, giving observers a glimpse into the mind of a globe-trotting do-gooder. One who can’t own up to doing anything wrong.

If I might be of some help here.....

Whenever two people swap -- and both walk away going, "Kewl! Great deal!" -- wealth has been created. This is the genius of capitalism -- both parties feel better-off than they were before, and thus the general level of better-off-ness has increased.

Various institutions exist to try to channel that extra "better-off-ness" into socially desirable ways. That's why you can hire a worker and shake on $10/hour....and find that you're paying $13 and he's getting $7.

In Thailand, there has been a significant amount of actual economic development, followed by a bunch of political activities designed to redirect the generated wealth to particular groups. And the folks who actually generated this wealth are miffed.

Thailand is pissed off because various groups who had no hand in generating financial success are becoming very vocal about redistributing the wealth generated by that success.

If they'd never seen anything besides failure, misery, and subjugation, they'd go along with what their "betters" told 'em....but they've now tasted success -- and their former lords don't look as attractive as they used to.

420 Cthulhu, sure, you can get whatever you want on a cheesesteak, but the original was only steak & onions. Provolone, American & cheese whiz are the preferred cheeses, with cheese whiz winning out hands down - depending on who you ask. I think the sandwich was invented by Pat's. There is a huge rivalry of Pat's vs. Geno's up in Philly. I've seen it on TV a few times. There are plenty of short videos on YouTube, and probably entire websites dedicated to the great debate.

MWNP is one of the good guys. If he says he's not seeing it, it's not because he's a troll or an asshole....it's that he's uninformed...and is listening. The exact sort of person you should be talking to persuasively.

I've never set foot in Philly, so I'm willing to entertain all sorts of info as valid -- and, certainly, something advertised in California as "Philly Cheesesteak" has all sorts of warning bells attached. Communication is an imperfect process. Sometimes you have to blow off peculiarities until later statements clarify things. When you add in the flaky nature of this particular blog, us morons should be particularly forgiving.

I believe that neither you nor MWNP set out to get crossways -- and, furthermore, believe you both to be honorable and acting in good faith. But, such is the nature of the medium that you are both feeling antagonized.

Please, both of you -- touch back on being a fellow moron and re-engage each other with attempts to persuade rather than dismiss. We can all benefit from an honest debate.

465 The curse of the computer geek. My sister wanted to help out her friend who is going through financial difficulties and apparently her PC is dying or suffers from some dire inadequacy. So I'm asked if I have a spare laptop I loan her. As if I'm just blowing money on extra gear for the mere fun of excess and being even more cramped in my limited space here. Or that something I had good reason to buy is just available for use by a stranger who isn't in a position to replace it if it is damaged or ruined. If I was a mechanic would she ask me if I just happened to have a spare car I don't mind loaning out?

She asked my brother as well and he volunteered an aging Toshiba laptop that shipped with Windows XP. But I'm the one stuck with making it usable. A Pentium M machine with 1.5 GB of RAM. At some point, my brother or my nephew, who was the last user, installed Windows 7 on it. Anything less than 2 GB of RAM is seriously not recommended for running any post-XP version of Windows. As far as I can tell, this machine went to Afghanistan with the nephew while he was in the Marine Corps version of Geek Squad. It seems it hasn't been turned on and allowed to update since late 2010. 146 items in the initial update batch, including all of the stuff for Office and other non-OS items. Who knows how much to follow and that is before getting to the third party stuff.

This is what I get for being in a state of semi-funemployment. And I expect I'll get crap from my sister when it is realized how slow this thing is going to be, even after eliminating a lot of stuff running in the background that the beneficiary is unlikely to want or use.

It's frustrating in that I hate that I'm investing this much effort in what will be a lousy user experience and worse, that I don't have anything better to do.

481 Greetings: Living in California, where the government thinks it unwise that law-abiding citizens have access to firearm magazines of more than 10 round capacities, I've often wondered if there is a legal case to be made vis-a-vis weapons provided by government to its officers. Your discussion of the FBI above brought my mind back to the brouhaha that involved the changeover from revolvers to "semi-automatic" handguns. My recollection is that the officers' concern was that criminals had the more threatening weapons and that they therefore needed them too, for protection. So, why is it that non-officers of the state, regular citizens, can be condemned to a less adequate level of self-protection?

Nothing wrong with your logic insofar as it goes, but gun control advocates aren't about drawing logical conclusions from valid premises or any of those other patriarchal constructs like 'fact' and 'truth' and 'right' and 'wrong'. It's about disarming the public. Any argument will do.

A gun is not a symbol of power. It is power. Thus, those who have all the guns have all the power. Public safety has nothing to do with anything here.

I know I likely won't survive such a terrible fate, but it is necessary for people to see the worst of all WMD's and how it is such a tragic fate compared to basic boring WMD's of times past.
