Since I'll be on a plane when you read this, tonight will be a movie night.
And the feature presentation is.... Kingpin (1996)
This lesser known Farrelly brothers comedy stars Woody Harrelson as Roy Munson, a young pro bowler on his way to the top in 1979. That is until he loses his hand while playing on the underground bowling gambling circuit. Fast forward 17 years later and he's a loser barely making it selling alley supplies. But when he comes across a gifted Amish bowler (Randy Quaid) he sees his chance to get back into the pro game and take down the reigning champ who cost him his hand years before. Bill Murray is great as Munson's enemy/rival, Ernie McCracken.
Full movie below the fold.
US AG Eric Holder: New Policy - You Don' Have to Enforce or Defend Laws You Don't Like
Because legislatures and judges doing their thing would just slow down the system and plus we know better.
Holder said state attorneys general do not have to enforce laws they disagree with, specifically when it comes to the issue of gay marriage.
"It is highly unusual for the United States attorney general to advise his state counterparts on how and when to refuse to defend state laws. But Mr. Holder said when laws touch on core constitutional issues like equal protection, an attorney general should apply the highest level of scrutiny before reaching a decision on whether to defend it. He said the decision should never be political or based on policy objections."
At this point I'm convinced that Eric Holder could take a bribe and do a line of coke off of an under-aged hooker on live TV and nothing could be done about it.
'Google Buses', Suburbs Are Bad For Cities, Says New York MTA Official
How dare companies act in their own self-interest says the guy with a vested interest in keeping people trapped on the public bus plantation.
"The Director of Sustainability for New York's MTA is calling out Google, Apple, and Yahoo for 'deliberately' building their campuses away from public amenities like restaurants, and public transportation. 'With very few honorable exceptions like Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos, who recently moved his company headquarters from suburban Henderson to downtown Las Vegas, tech companies seem not to have gotten the memo that suburbs are old and bad news,' he writes. Instead of launching their own bus services to ferry people from the city to their campuses, as the tech companies have done, the Googles and Apples of the world should 'locate themselves in existing urban communities. Ideally, in blighted ones,' says Dutta."
I remember when cities were practically bribing companies to offer car pooling and shuttle buses. But now when they actually do it - and decline to set up in expensive, crime ridden areas, they're class criminals depriving the government of its entitled income.
Dennis Prager himself helms this close look at the differences between reason and the structure of good and evil, starting off by challenging a centuries-old narrative about history's worst despots. Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, and Adolf Hitler often get called "madmen" for their massive crimes against humanity, but other than the megalomania that propelled them to their positions of power, did they act irrationally?
Actually evil quite often is completely rational. Which should tell you that being rational and being moral are two completely different qualities.

5 Things Movies Don't Tell You About Mental Institutions
You're allowed to bring your own stuff into a mental hospital. You're not going to be sitting in a hospital gown, barefoot, in a barren room with nothing but your pixie cut and a big Native American dude for warmth. The hospital will give you socks, at least.Virtually every place lets you bring your own clothes, with some restrictions. No belts, shoelaces, drawstrings on hoodies or sweatpants, nothing with violent images. No Manson T-shirts or gang colors. But you can totally wear a suit or cocktail dress if you really want.
You're allowed to have visitors, and they can bring you things like books and edible food (of course, the staff searches the bags first).
...At one private hospital, I could bring my laptop and keep it in my room, cord and all. I'd do my homework and keep up with class assignments with the hospital's free Wi-Fi. I could also order delivery and have it buzzed through to the floor. You're not treated like a criminal, because you're not criminally insane. Movies often lose the distinction between the two -- normal people with mental issues aren't going into some dystopian crazy-prison, because they've done nothing wrong. They're sick, and the whole point is to help.
They're very rare but they exist.
On September 24, 1914 the Norwegian Minister of Defense officially adopted the Colt Government Model automatic pistol, caliber .45 for use by the Norwegian armed forces....Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk manufactured well over 20,000 units of the M1914 in the period between 1914-1940. Early examples had a nice blue finish (although nowhere near as fine as Colt's finish on early Government Models). However by 1938 the clouds of war had gathered in Europe and Kongsberg switched to a faster and less labor intensive phosphate and enamel finish.
In 1940 the Germans invaded and quickly occupied Norway. The factory was captured and kept in operation to produce weapons for Nazi use. M1914 pistols and Krag rifles produced at the factory were transferred to Armeoberkommando Norwegen (Norwegian Army Command). Most of these weapons were used by German or Norwegian Quisling forces (Norwegians that collaborated with Germany). The M1914 pistol was designated as the Pistole 657(n) by the Germans.

And Bill Murray was playing evil-Bill-Murray. You know, Venkman and the counselor from "Meatballs" if those guys actually were creeps, rather than decent guys under a creep facade. I prefer the fun-creepy Murray from those other two movies.

One of the things we don't talk about much, what with arguing Thomas Szasz and such, is that many involuntary commitments were in lieu of kinds of insurance and aid that didn't exist back then. The horror stories were about incorrigible (and often pregnant) teenagers, but it was pretty common for Grandpa, getting a little dotty and without enough pension to keep up his own place, to get a commitment.
Or, when syphilis got to a certain point, elders were not exactly going to be taken into their nuclear family's homes. And in the 30's and 40's there was a lot of untreated syphilis.

See the thing with discarding the rule of law is that when the government picks and chooses which laws it's free to ignore, sooner or later, the rest of us will, too. Though I kind of expect that's the plan since the Dem voters are criminals in spirit (Voting for theft makes you a thief no matter what niceties fools try to mask the situation with) anyway.

I'm not crazy about SC barbecue, but my mom's side of the family has been there three centuries, so I have to watch what I say and eat what's put in front of me.
Go SC barbecue! I ate some great stuff out on Edisto Island a few years ago. I don't know what they did to it but it was outstanding.

Not a big biscuit and gravy fan (I LOVE Popeye's biscuits, but I like them just plain, with the spicy fried chicken, which is much better than KFC, IMO. Unfortunately, everytime I go to Popeye's I feel like I'm taking my life in my hands.)
That's also the problem with buying grits (which I do like), and going to a joint called Speed Queen, which has the best Southern barbeque I've ever had this far north of the Mason-Dixon Line and really massive portions. A yout was shot not far from Speed Queen not long ago.

I am so sorry, Bob. I've been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been tapping your wife, day and night, whenever you're not around. In fact, more than you. I'm not getting any at home, but that's no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won't happen again.
Anguished and betrayed, Bob went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife and killed her.
A few moments later, a second text came in:
Damn autocorrect. I meant "wifi", not "wife".

They need to invite Tony Abbott, the new conservative PM of Australia to California. Tim Blair said Abbott is the anti-Gore. The weather gets shitty and cold whenever Gore comes to town to talk about global warming. Abbott visited some place in Australia where it hadn't rained in about a year and it poured there.
But then, the rulers of California wouldn't want to invite a conservative Aussie who doesn't believe in global warming to lala land. So no rain for you.

Popeyes is the only fast food restaurant I like (and I've never found feathers in my chicken). I don't ever make fried chicken at home so it's my go-to place when I have a craving for it.
McDonald's fries ain't what they used to be, so I don't go there anymore.
As much as I'd like to support Chik-A-Fil, the nearest one is a 50 mile round trip for me. I'd drive that far for a really great ribeye steak, not a chicken sandwich.

If that's going to be the standard, you could just as easily say any European country's scientific or philosophical works through the 1600s are not their own because it was done in Latin.

No, the worship of Rome, and the wish to be like it, is the result of a bunch of different tinpot dictators claiming to be the New one, and their old account books being translated into Arabic and then back into Italian. And those dictators had stables of copyists and commentators working for them. Some books got written.
I studied Latin for years. We should be attempting to learn from their mistakes and failings, not worshiping them as a lost golden age.
The Romans built in stone, huzzah. They didn't have much wood. They did their building with slaves, and the loot from captive nations. Any place where there is frost, you might find pieces of their buildings laying around, but seldom one stone on another.

The checks and balances in the federal government descends directly from the Roman Republic. The government the Constitution outlined bore more similarity to the Republic than the parliamentary system the Brits had. If you doubt the influence, why do you think the founding fathers all used Roman aliases when arguing about the Constitution? Why do you think Washington loved Addison's play about Cato? Come on, this is ridiculous.

Regarding my ongiong quest for a rifle--got to handle some used pieces at Gander Mountain today--nice action on the X-bolt, also a Ruger Hawkeye. However, I think my favorite was a Weatherby.
Still need to handle some more pieces before deciding, as well as figure out what Mrs. Crank's uncle is holding from her late father, he had a lot of muzzle loaders but a few more modern pieces as well.

Yeah, actually, I do. That's a sign of English's influence and, more importantly, a sign of America's influence over the past 100 years. For the Chinese to argue otherwise--and I know that some do--would be ridiculous.
It makes as much sense not to give Romans credit for works that were written in Greek as it does not to give medieval and early modern English, French, and Germans credit for works that were written in Latin.

Civilization certainly did not begin in Greece, although they had their moments, didn't they? The general thinking is Mesopotamia, where the first water taxes were collected. See, so much depends on definitions. Roman maps had east at the top.
China and Greece were probably about even, at about the same time. The Persians were the big game in town during most of Rome. Egypt, though loathsome in many respects, has to count for something. India had stuff going on, as, some big book tells me, did the smaller states in the eastern Med. But I'm not looking for a lost golden age to worship.
You guys have read some very wicked historians, is all. You can learn from Rome. You should never want to be like them. When it was new and shiny, it was more corrupt than anything we can imagine here.

the medicine: their doctors were all Greeks
education: they studied Greek, mostly. Their greatest mathematical breakthrough was an arithmetic approximation of pi, to bill for private water pipes. Tutoring by slaves, Greek slaves, no public schools or widespread teaching, rich fucks only.
wine: They sure as hell did not invent wine. Try garum.
public order: Now you have hit on something. They were the very bitch for public order, as long as their foot was on your neck. In their actual city, you traveled with guards if you could afford it. What the hell movies are you seeing?
irrigation: Again, invented in Mesopotamia, and every other culture in the world was practicing it. Used the best ideas they found, didn't invent anything new, and it was all human powered.
roads: Reserved for the rich, and the legions. Well-made; high maintenance. Germany had excellent railroads, necessary for the Schlieffen Plan. Same deal.
the fresh-water system: Pretty good aqueducts, mostly needed due to poor siting of their cities. Easily disrupted, as they found out, and "fresh," not "pure."
and public health: here, you have got to be shitting me. They lost over half their population in just one epidemic, and then really got going. Place was a deathtrap.
Look, I'm an old classicist. I'm all for studying the Romans, and in their own tongue, too. But get your nose out of their Mafia ass. They were not gods, or even very exemplary men.

You apparently think you're somehow smarter for saying that we should be Rome.
That's pitiable, little dude.
All I know about Roman morals is what I picked up from Cicero, Sallust, and Plutarch. I'd point out that Christianity took a rather dim view of them too, for most of history, but you're just flailing now and I don't think you're fully capable of absorbing that. So, another time.
I didn't start out thinking I was smarter than you, but you've about made the case. Once more, I am accusing you of repeating what you've heard, without giving it a lot of thought. And you're a big Oswald Spengler fan, too, aren't you.

It was a joke. The guy was quoting Monty Python's Life of Brian.
REG: They've bled us white, the bastards. They've taken everything we had, and not just from us, from our fathers, and from our fathers' fathers.
LORETTA: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers.
REG: Yeah.
LORETTA: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers' fathers.
REG: Yeah. All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what have they ever given us in return?!
XERXES: The aqueduct?
REG: What?
XERXES: The aqueduct.
REG: Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.
COMMANDO #3: And the sanitation.
LORETTA: Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like?
REG: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.
MATTHIAS: And the roads.
REG: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads--
COMMANDO: Irrigation.
XERXES: Medicine.
COMMANDOS: Huh? Heh? Huh...
COMMANDO #2: Education.
COMMANDOS: Ohh...
REG: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
COMMANDO #1: And the wine.
COMMANDOS: Oh, yes. Yeah...
FRANCIS: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg, if the Romans left. Huh.
COMMANDO: Public baths.
LORETTA: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Reg.
FRANCIS: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
COMMANDOS: Hehh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
REG: All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
XERXES: Brought peace.
REG: Oh. Peace? Shut up!

Ventura claimed for years to have seen heavy combat in Vietnam.
Well, Ventura was in the Navy *during* the Vietnam years, and he did deploy. To the Phillippines. He was never anywhere near the tough sledding in VN proper.
With luck, the counsel for Chris Kyle's widow will go after all this in court, stomp the suit into the dirt, and Ventura will get stuck paying not only his own legal bills but hers, plus damages.

Yep! It's a beautiful place. Not much in the way of nightlife, but beautiful. We had to drive over to NC to a place called the State Line Tavern (IIRC) to have a beer.
We ran into a bit of a hitch trying to get permission to go on someone's property to do the surveying, which delayed us for a few days. And the whole time we were there, I remember looking over my shoulder in case someone walked up with a shotgun.

It shouldn't be bolted, it should be sitting on a frame. And when you grout the sink to the granite, put full 5-gallon buckets into it (plus additional weight), do the caulk, let it dry, then pull the weight out.

Cthulhu, everything I read when I researched undermount sinks in granite is that you use mounting clips to support it. Pre-existing from previous owners, so no idea who did it. Some of the hardware for some of the clips seems to be missing as well. I'll be supporting it with C-clamps and a 2x4 across the top of the counter for installation.
There were a few pieces of fiberboard around the periphery, but they don't look like they had any weightbearing responsibility except in the front, where the initial point of failure was.

Our cabinetmaker (custom cabinets, so I could wedge 'em into our existing galley-kitchen footprint) built the sink cabinet to support the sink on wood instead of using brackets.

If the border with Russia is moved from Kerch to Armyansk, and Ukraine loses no other territory, it's probably not too horrible. Russia has always had the feeling that lack of a warm-water port was an existential threat, and losing Sevastopol would might drive them into doing something worse.
Then, again, we all know what happens when you start feeding the bear.

EPA employees threatened Inspector General investigators, refused to cooperate, and handed out non-disclosure agreements to other employees to keep them from being interviewed, EPA Inspector General Arthur Elkins Jr. wrote in response to a request for information by Vitter on the case.
“Over the past 12 months, there have been several EPA officials who have taken action to prevent [the Office of Investigations] OI from conducting investigations or have attempted to obstruct investigations through intimidation,” Elkins wrote.

The Crimean Peninsula (actually sort of an island between Kerch and Armyansk) has long been a central part of Russian thinking. Its leaders have their dachas there, Yalta is famous for the Yalta Conference, Sevastopol has a huge Russian Navy base, that has long been there. Right next to it is balaklava, for which the garment is named.
On the other hand, the rest of Russia treats the rest of Ukraine like they were castmembers from Hee-Haw. Bunch of grass-chewing hicks in the sticks wearing funny clothes with strange accents.
And there are two ways onto the Crimean Peninsula -- one from the Ukraine side and one from the Russian side.
So it makes a whole lot of sense for Putin to play for Crimea; a lot of sense that denying him Crimea would escalate things in a hurry; and a certain bit of relief that Ukraine could live without it. But, as noted, feeding bears is very dangerous.

But the issues go way beyond food, as the City University of New York professor Nicholas Freudenberg discusses in his new book, “Lethal but Legal: Corporations, Consumption, and Protecting Public Health.” Freudenberg’s case is that the food industry is but one example of the threat to public health posed by what he calls “the corporate consumption complex,” an alliance of corporations, banks, marketers and others that essentially promote and benefit from unhealthy lifestyles.
It sounds creepy; it is creepy. But it’s also plain to see. Yes, it’s unlikely there’s a cabal that sits down and asks, “How can we kill more kids tomorrow?” But Freudenberg details how six industries — food and beverage, tobacco, alcohol, firearms, pharmaceutical and automotive — use pretty much the same playbook to defend the sales of health-threatening products. This playbook, largely developed by the tobacco industry, disregards human health and poses greater threats to our existence than any communicable disease you can name.
All of these industries work hard to defend our “right” — to smoke, feed our children junk, carry handguns and so on — as matters of choice, freedom and responsibility. Their unified line is that anything that restricts those “rights” is un-American.

We Knobs have a platform that describes all the things we are for and against. We are actually Pro- nothing at all. And, we are opposed to just one thing, which happens to be summed up by the spelling our name.

I was reading a history of Enron last week. That other bank mentioned, NatWest, was a big player in enabling the shenanigans there.
I also note the story above on that site says one of the big pension and savings outfits, Standard Life, is ready to split from Scotland if it goes independent. If I were in their position I'd have already taken measures to make sure no physical assets were stuck in the region and everything else could be shifted to live in different servers with just a few commands.

Y'know, like many of the best lies, this one starts off with a kernel of truth. Yes, there are industries that abuse the hell out of their customers.
But, in the classic manner of the Big Lie, the explanation reverses cause-and-effect and prescribes a "cure" that is actually the most significant driving factor behind the "disease" -- government regulation, especially in collusion with the regulated, AKA "regulatory capture".
The six industries mentioned, "food and beverage, tobacco, alcohol, firearms, pharmaceutical and automotive," are among the most over-regulated portions of our economy....and the cure is to regulate them further? The ATF is responsible for half of them at the Federal level -- does anyone, anyone at all, think the agency responsible for Fast-and-Furious should be tasked with anything besides clearing out their desks?
These industries got that way because regulations trumped traditional product law; because bureaucracy won out over transparency; because over-control created a culture of gaming the system; and because money better spent improving products was more profitably spent buying legislators or regulators.

cthulhu, the epidemic superbug is the nightmare scenario for the CDC. However, it will not be the fault of the FDA, big Pharma, or any other single entity. They will contribute, sure, but the biggest enemies are the physicians who overprescribed antibiotics and the patients who were not compliant in finishing the course of treatment.

Dispersing blame among several entities doesn't lessen the blame, it taints both the entities and the system that surrounds them. And, hey, I've seen that phage stuff -- pretty keen, right? -- can you legally do that here in the US? Will it fit into an FDA study? Can it become an OTC product here?
Once it was known that patients weren't taking their prescription antibiotics properly, were there mandatory protocols put in place to mitigate that? Were, for instance, some antibiotics restricted to time-release subcutaneous administration? No? Well I guess MRSA ain't such a big problem compared to the billions of dollars of bureaucrat salaries that our current regime has spawned.
And, by the way, while we're talking about overprescribed antibiotics, is there a reason that the FDA has been so complacent about the massive use of antibiotics in livestock? A lot of that genetic material conferring resistance to antibiotic XXX probably originated in a pork chop -- and I doubt many MDs were monitoring the care of random sows.

Back in the days when he was Governor Moonbeam, people outside of California didn't realize (1) he actually was pretty bright, and (2) he had just been schooled by the Jesuits -- he was driven by honor as well as ideology. Unfortunately, this round, he's just a Dem hack.

To your note about regulations
Every industry in the USofA is now regulated to the point that a gov't official can come in at any time and find something that is a violation.
This is just the commercial / industrial version of the over regulation that we as a nation are under as individuals also.
ex. Many moons ago I used to make toilet paper. Despite the fact that this product was going to be used on your nasty dirty ass then thrown into the toilet (except in Russia) for disposal, we had to follow all of the same reg's as a food plant.
Now I understand that you want to ensure that nothing bad is in a product that will be in intimate contact with your nether regions, but food plant reg's is a little bit of overkill.

Cthulhu, those antibiotics in livestock aren't even prescribed in many cases, AFAIK. I do know that I can walk into tractor supply whether a doctor or dumb as a doornail and walk out with an armload of vaccines for my animals.
What you're talking about with the antibiotics, I think, is what we call DOT, direct observed therapy, and it's how TB has been treated for decades in this country. Of course, the incidence of active TB in the population is quite low. Try having someone monitor every dose of antibiotics for ear infections in even a small city.

What I'm talking about is an atmosphere of collusion between Pharma and the FDA, where neither one has acted responsibly in the public interest, and where existing drugs have been misused into uselessness, drugs in the pipeline have been ratcheted to obscenely high price points and low availability, and where entire classes of therapies have been shunted off to foreign research facilities.....and which leave us potentially vulnerable to the next Spanish Flu or Black Death.
Which you, by the way, will probably get because you won't abandon your post and run off to some quarantine station out in nowheresville.

and where entire classes of therapies have been shunted off to foreign research facilities.....
Another issue is the foreign manufacture of so many of the drugs. Do you really want to trust the drugs manufactured in India from raw materials sourced in China? Well, that's what you're getting.
We are over regulated, they are hard to monitor ....

First, the existing FDA would be split in two and privatized, yielding FDA1 and FDA2. Second, rules would be set forth as a framework to create FDA3, FDA4, and so forth, with private capital.
Third, every producer of food or drugs would need to be licensed by one of the FDAs before engaging in interstate commerce.
And, fourth....and most important....any FDA that doesn't retain the public trust is allowed to go insolvent. Its final salaries unpaid, its pensions unfunded, its officers discredited, and its workers unemployed.
Eventually, such a scheme would probably devolve into rival meatpacking FDAs, rival drug FDAs, rival dairy FDAs, etc. -- which would be all to the good, in that each would gain expertise in its subject area and would learn to be more efficient lest its producer base defect to the other.....and, of course, if FDA(cheese)1 had a bad outbreak leading to a huge recall, it could go bust, leaving FDA(cheese)2 some windfall profit before FDA(cheese)3 stepped in.

Technology has made us very good at developing novel molecules to test for medical applications but not so much for predicting the effects without real world trials. Everybody wants the treatment but doesn't want to be a guinea pig. No easy answers. Testing extensively is really expensive but so is litigation.
My brother is a very healthy sort, far more so than me, largely because he is very active and would have to be strapped down to forced him to retain enough calories to ever get fat. But he did have a lot of accumulated injuries due to his activities, with crashing dirt bikes and attacking trees while skiing among his favorites. So, to deal with the pain, he was given a prescription for Vioxx. Six months after his insurer gave him a discount for being in such terrific condition for his age, he had a heart attack. In that short span he'd acquired a 90% blockage.
The revelations that came out later made it clear Vioxx should never have been approved for wide use. It worked great for its label purpose but carried dire consequences. The concern here wasn't that the FDA process was costly but that it failed to achieve its mission of protecting the citizenry from a product defect. There were humans involved and a lot of money involved, which frequently means someone or ones succumbs to the temptation to cheat. Better technology will help eventually but that is little comfort for those in need today.
There are improvements here and there. For instance, if this company succeeds, blood diagnostics will be greatly improved in terms of cost and reduced suffering.

The doctor sidled up next to him in the crowd and whispered loudly, "What the hell do you think you're doing?!?"

sometimes it is just rampant stupidity crossed with a large dose of idiotic pride. today I ran across a bunch of state bureaucrats that are misreading the state administrative code in the most pathetic manner --
they are arguing from their position of authority that the code as written deliberately describes a physical impossibility so that it can be interpreted that no water pipe is ever supposed to cross a sewer pipe anywhere.
and to get this position, they have to deliberately ignore the very next paragraph that describes all of the requirements for a water pipe to cross a sewer pipe.
so, they are construing a vague statement in a section about parallel pipelines to over-ride a detailed statement about crossing pipelines.
once the idiot showed his complete inability to read and think at the same time, he locked his pride into overdrive and won't budge.

How many of us are in poorer health now due to listening to the 'better health' suggestions for so many years.
Food pyramid - looks just like the diet they feed pigs to fatten them for market
Salt is bad for you - essential to your health, it's the excessive sodium in much of todays food that's the real issue
Eat margarine because butter is bad - margarine is made of almost entirely transfats, butter has fats that are natural and are better for you
and the list can go on and on...
Now, how many people are now taking medications to cure the problems that all of the above have created?

Well, that speaks to the core issue of government, doesn't it? What should it do and not do? How much is too much or not enough? And how much can a private organization's opinion be trusted?
One of the huge failures of private organizations that made the real estate bubble possible was the way ratings companies were compelled to give AAA ratings to completely crap MBS piles. (Something I hadn't heard until reading the book last week, Enron never had better than a BBB+ rating.) The problem there is most of the income for those companies was coming from the very entities whose offerings should have been rated as junk.
At the same time, nobody in the government regulatory agencies who interact with the ratings companies asked a simple question: how can a collection of suburban mortgages possibly merit a AAA rating? Has it become fashionable for multi-millionaires to live in the burbs among those of far lesser means? Unless those mortgages were all held by people who had the liquidity to pay off the balance on short notice, a AAA should simply have been inapplicable to this class of financial product.
This is a case where everybody in authority screwed up, because there was so much money to be made and so many political points to be scored for those who weren't to benefit financially. But such is human endeavor. We can do better but never avoid the problems entirely.

Again, you're confusing cause with effect. You're saying that people had good intentions and made mistakes when people had bad intentions and bought forbearance.
If you assume good intentions and mistakes, you allow for further regulation and attempted control.....where recognizing the the underlying fraud and regulatory buyoff means that you see the necessity of ruin. Anyone who issued a bad loan after coercing an assessor to rate it better needs to eat it. Anyone who assessed a property without recognizing neighbors' fraudulent comps needs to eat it. Anyone going into a property underwater on its actual fair market value needs to be foreclosed.....because that will ensure that the next 20 years will be run "on the square" by the survivors.

A good plague could likely knock down modern civilization for a good while but extinction is a big jump from there. Cities like New York or Chicago would be very vulnerable but the more spread out cities you find as you move West would be harder targets to achieve sufficient infection levels before response limited the rate of transmission.
Now if you came up with something that took like a year or more to go active with no symptoms prior to that...
I don't know how long Ringo intends to run with this series. I'm near the end of the second book and there has been no further development on the plot thread regarding who did this and why since the first half of the first book. Everything since then has been survivors forming a growing ocean bound community aboard ships, seeking to grow to the point where they can reclaim Guatanamo Bay and use its facilities to restart the vaccine production that had only produced a small volume before things went critical. Much of the survivor populace, including personnel on USN nuke subs, cannot actively participate in retaking the planet until they can be vaccinated.
Lots of gun porn, discussion on government structures and population levels. One of the leaders notes that a lot of the equipment they depend upon is unlikely to be in production again in their lifetimes, no matter how successful they are in wiping out the infected hordes on the land. Their will be a salvage driven economy for the knowable future and they can only seek to preserve as much knowledge of technology as possible against the day when there is enough security of resources and people to restart industry.

No, not at all. That people will seek to cheat and scam is a given. The regulatory agencies would have no reason to exist otherwise, and the role of the ratings companies would be far reduced. (If men were angels...) If anything, people whose effectiveness relies on the expectation that anyone they're scrutinizing is up to no good until proven otherwise failed in that function.
One problem several writers have noted, is the regulators are composed of people who either lack the qualifications to understand the scams (Harry Markoplis ran into this a lot when trying to expose Bernie Madoff), or those who have the qualifications but are hoping for much more lucrative employment at the companies in question and are thus sorely averse to angering a Goldman Sachs or Bear Stearns.
It's an inherent problem with any variety of cop, whether they're looking for crime on the streets, or sky scraper corner offices, or pharmaceutical labs.

Ah, but that is not really how the system worked, at least when I was working as a mortgage broker during a previous period of unemployment.
The whole mortgage industry was divided into separate entities and each one was trying to get their cut. Since everything was oriented around passing the hot potato on to the next entity, nobody really cared much about the viability of the loans since they were really just the raw material that was fed into the machine that produced sophisticated financial derivatives that magically transformed sub-prime mortgages into AAA low risk, high return paper that you are simply not clever enough to understand.
The thing is that all the smart people involved got their take out of it up front and that money has long since been spent on BMWs, whores and blow.
