— Maetenloch
Well like Ace I'm just going to rely on my cumulative word average tonight.
I've always said that if you have more than 3 keys on your keychain, own your own vacuum cleaner, and know all your tax rates, you're deeper down the gullet of the Snake of Aging than you might think. But here are 25 more indicators.
I've endured a few knocks but missed worse. I know how lucky I am, and secretly tap wood, greet the day, and grab a sneaky pleasure from my survival at long odds. The pains and insults are bearable. My conversation may be full of holes and pauses, but I've learned to dispatch a private Apache scout ahead into the next sentence, the one coming up, to see if there are any vacant names or verbs in the landscape up there. If he sends back a warning, I'll pause meaningfully, duh, until something else comes to mind.
..."Most of the people my age is dead. You could look it up" was the way Casey Stengel put it. He was seventy-five at the time, and contemporary social scientists might prefer Casey's line delivered at eighty-five now, for accuracy, but the point remains. We geezers carry about a bulging directory of dead husbands or wives, children, parents, lovers, brothers and sisters, dentists and shrinks, office sidekicks, summer neighbors, classmates, and bosses, all once entirely familiar to us and seen as part of the safe landscape of the day. It's no wonder we're a bit bent.
How To Avoid The Big Screw-Ups In Life: Advice To A 20-Year Old From People Twice His Age
- If you can make a reasonable living doing what you love, DO WHAT YOU LOVE.. You may not get rich, but you'll get to do what you love. Don't quit your day job until doing what you love pays the bills, but don't incur big debt getting a law degree or an MBA if you really want to be an artist.
- It's amazing how easy life is when you're honest with yourself and others. This doesn't mean you should be rude and inconsiderate, but it's better to be upfront when you have to rather than concealing things and letting them grow.
- Set up a safety fund. Yes, I know the savings account interest rates suck right now, but having 3-6 months of expenses in readily accessible cash can save you a lot of hassle. It also allows you to loan money to friends when needed (do this judiciously).
- The biggest disappointments in life are the result of misplaced expectation. Tempering unrealistic expectations of how great something will be can greatly reduce frustration.
- Understand that at 22 you are at your most energetic and most creative, but your labor is valued very little. All the more reason to 1) stand up for yourself and look for the highest bidder and 2) get that degree.
And more at the link.
Everyone's Favorite RadFeminist Discovers a New Crime by Men
Husbands robbing their wives.
That's because the central cause of women's impoverishment isn't impersonal and institutional, but comes from men individually stealing from women in their individual homes. The owner, husband, master, stealing from the woman's own pocket. I only realised how literal it was quite recently. This is the primary pattern of women's crippling poverty. It became clear to me after hearing story after story of women being ransacked to the bone by their own husbands or boyfriends, it was typical of every abuse story I've heard of - these men systematically stealing their salary, signing credits, debts or mortgages in the woman's name, binding women in suicidal financial situations or reckless business plans, stealing women's property, flats or houses by signing it in their (the man's) name, taking siege of the woman's flat or house and refusing to move out, spending women's income on drugs, cars, expensive restaurants, gambling, prostitution or whatever their pet fetish is, controlling access to their bank account, or systematically sabotaging their access to work, income or property in any form, by moving her far away from her work, wrecking her chances to find employment in any way possible, sabotaging her relationship with her employer, or finding ways to cut her benefits for childcare, preventing her from using the money she has for herself, etc, etc. The list is endless.
Unfortunately for me Mrs. Maetenloch works for the DoD and isn't a member of a public sector union so there ain't a whole lot to steal there except for maybe a slightly-above-average health plan which I get anyway. So I'm either the world's worst member of the patriarchy or I'm not in this marriage for all the lucrative spoils and plunder. But wait - I did use her shampoo and a muffler one time without express permission so yeah I guess my P-card is still valid. Whew.
Meanwhile Russell Brand Is the Patriarchy or Something, Says Katy Perry

How Republicans Killed Open Carry in South Carolina
A bill that would allow South Carolinians to carry guns openly or concealed without first receiving the State's sanction through a permit was killed by Republicans. It failed to advance out of the State's Judiciary Committee - despite a large Republican majority - under strong opposition from Republican Senator Larry Martin.
The bill is called Constitutional Carry. Backers say its premise is based on the fact that the 2nd Amendment is the only permit needed to carry a weapon.
So much inexplicable political weirdness seems to come out of South Carolina that I've basically put it into the 'Florida' category - which means it's for entertainment only and not to be taken seriously. My theory on this is that 1) it has a very conservative and very insular political culture filled with intrigue and more-rightwing-than-thou posturing and 2) there's some kind of naturally-occurring mineral compound in the soil that brings out the crazee there. Is South Carolina nuts? provides some evidence that option 2) may be on to something.
Why English is Still the Lingua Franca
The fashion began in places with small populations but global ambitions such as Singapore (which retained English as its lingua franca when it left the British empire in 1963), the Nordic countries and Switzerland. Goran Lindahl, a former boss of ABB, a Swiss-Swedish engineering giant, once described its official language as "poor English". The practice spread to the big European countries: numerous German and French multinationals now use English in board meetings and official documents....The Académie française may be prickly about the advance of English. But there is no real alternative as a global business language. The most plausible contender, Mandarin Chinese, is one of the world's most difficult to master, and least computer-friendly. It is not even universal in China: more than 400m people there do not speak it.
...English can provide a neutral language in a merger: when Germany's Hoechst and France's Rhône-Poulenc combined in 1999 to create Aventis, they decided it would be run in English, in part to avoid choosing between their respective languages.
Well other than our fucked up spelling English is one of the easier languages to learn. And don't underestimate the fact that it provides a 'neutral' tongue. English lets Japanese and Koreans as well as say Polish and Germans discuss issues without feeling that the language of the discussion itself is a sign of cultural domination/subordination.
10 Highly Disturbing Sitcom Episodes of the 70s and 80s
All the way through the 90s whenever you heard the phrase 'a very special episode of' in front of a sitcom title, you knew it was going be a) very unfunny b) very lecture-y, and quite often c) wildly inappropriate.
Ask any American who grew up in the eighties what sitcom episode caused the most mental trauma, and you will always wind up on the insidious Bicycle Man episodes. Sure, there were other sitcoms that dealt with molestation, but never this graphic, this painful to behold.
Gordon Jump plays Mr. Horton, a bicycle repairman who lures the two kids, Arnold and Dudley to his pedophile lair. What transpires next should never have been included in a situation comedy - I don't care how altruistic the writer's intentions were. Viewers expecting to see comedy got sodomy instead. Mr. Horton proceeds to drug the kids, bathe them, show them pornography.. and, yes, the episode actually had a laugh track!
Minnesota Nursing Home Defends Rapist, Calls 89-Year-Old Victim "A Flirt"
A pretty horrible story made worse by the actions of the nursing home.
An 89-year-old woman is suing a Minnesota nursing home for punitive damages because she was forced to spend 72 hours in a mental health unit after she reported that she was raped by 30-year-old Andrew Scott Merzwski.
...Meanwhile, court testimony shows that the nursing home's clinical services director, Marilyn Moore, repeatedly tried to defend Merzwski, even after he had confessed, saying that the victim was a "flirt," implying that she asked for it. "Did she tell you that this was consensual?" Moore asked Flesvig. "Did she tell you that she flirts with this boy mercilessly?" Moore also told a sexual assault advocate that the victim was a "flirt" who was "making it up." Flesvig told the court she was baffled. "I was just shocked that somebody was so blatantly putting the blame on this woman," Flesvig she said.
Yahoo group. That is all.
The group thingy. And the middle class.
And my Twitter spew.

Then they got it. It seems that when the paramedics responded, they brought treats for the monkey. Being a bright sort, the monkey put two and two together and figured out that if he turned THIS knob HERE down a little when the man was asleep, people would show up and give him treats. This highly trained monkey had figured out how to make the machinery feed him!
I would think that "don't give treats to the assistance animal for no reason" would be something that is quite important

Have you ever watched the game be played? English is the also the International Language of Aviation.
Air traffic controllers and pilots around the world, are required to know enough English to communicate with each other in English.
This could change though...if we continue to treat our Aviation Industry like it is a fat golden goose that should be plucked mercilessly.

"It also allows you to loan money to friends when needed (do this judiciously)"
The best way to lose friends and relatives is loaning money. Also, absent a contract, a personal capital loan is not a deductible expense if you incur a loss.
My advise as an old white haired guy approaching the drop off point is if you wish to maintain friendships or relatives, never....and I repeat never loan money even under the worst or circumstance.

here:
An engineer dies and reports to the Pearly Gates. Saint Peter checks his
dossier and, not seeing his name there, accidentally sends him to Hell.
It doesn't take long before the engineer becomes rather dissatisfied
with the level of comfort in Hell. He soon begins to design and build
improvements. Shortly thereafter, Hell has air conditioning, flush
toilets and escalators. Needless to say, the engineer is a pretty
popular guy.
One day, God calls Satan and says: "So, how are things in
Hell?"
Satan replies: "Hey, things are going great. We've got air
conditioning, flush toilets and escalators. And there's no telling what
this engineer is going to come up with next."
"What!" God exclaims: "You've got an engineer? That's a mistake - he should never have been
sent to Hell. Send him to me."
"Not a chance," Satan replies: "I like
having an engineer on the staff and I'm keeping him!"
God insists: "Send
him back or I'll sue."
Satan laughs uproariously and answers: "Yeah
right. And where are you going to get a lawyer?"

Well, personally I lurrve spoilers.
I even seek them out, before I watch something.
Reading spoilers has never spoiled or diminished my viewing enjoyment.
That is...if the thing was at all enjoyable to watch in the first place.

This goes on every night for a year.
Then one night, the Irishman comes in and takes his normal seat. The waitress comes up and asks if he'll have his usual, to which he replies "no, bring me only two pints tonight and ever after."
A hush falls across the bar as the regulars hear the order and contemplate the change. After a long silence, the bartender approaches the man. Says he:
"Sir, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, 'tis cruel hard to lose a brother, aye."
The Irishman looks up from his paper, somewhat perturbed. Upon reflection, he replies "Me brothers are fine, it's only that I've quit drinking".

Nothing can sour you on human nature in general faster than being fucked over by friends and family over money.
However, learning that people are greedy irresponsible shits, including people you like and/or are related to, can be a useful life lesson. Shell out a few bucks and see what happens. Just don't go bankrupt yourself paying the tuition for that lesson.

It's just better to state you wish to maintain their friendship and the best way to accomplish this is not become entangled with finances.
I also never invest with friends or relatives, no matter the anticipated return. The only return will be a very sore ass.

My grandmother told me...when I was a wee lass...

She gave me a silver dollar, and told me to hide it away.
That started me in on saving.

Posted by: yankeefifth at February 27, 2014 11:07 PM (rDidD)
You just called me a liar. Eat shit.
1. Your potted plants are alive. And you canÂ’t smoke a one of them.
I rarely own any plants since I don't have the time or space for them, and I've never smoked pot.
2. Having sex in a twin-sized bed is absurd.
I've never had sex in a twin-sized bed. I had a full-sized bed since I moved into my own apartment.
3. You keep more food than beer in the fridge.
Always been the case, except when I was too busy from work to go to the store. I have at most a six pack and a bottle of wine, and that would last me a week.
4. 6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to sleep.
8am classes and a full-time job.
5. You hear your favorite song on an elevator.
I like old music, so this isn't that surprising.
6. You carry an umbrella. You watch the Weather Channel.
Again, 8am classes and a full-time job that required a suit and tie. Trudging through bad weather sucks the first time you do it, so I made sure to be prepared.
7. Your friends marry and divorce instead of hookup and breakup.
My friends started marrying the summer after I turned 21.
8. You go from 130 days of vacation time to 7.
Again, going to school and working full time through most of college. Then I actually got more vacation time after I joined the Army than I did in college.
9. Jeans and a sweater no longer qualify as ‘dressed up.’
Suit and tie or slacks and a collared shirt has always been the standard for my family.
10. YouÂ’re the one calling the police because those darn kids next door donÂ’t know how to turn down the stereo.
I've never called the cops, but I have pounded on a neighbor's door twice to complain about the noise. While in college.
11. Older relatives feel comfortable telling sex jokes around you.
This was always the case in my family. Or even with co-workers. I've always gotten along with an older crowd.
12. You donÂ’t know what time Taco Bell closes anymore.
Never did. I'd cook my own meals if it was late.
13. Your car insurance goes down and your car payments go up.
Car payments went up at 23, insurance went down at 25, so sort of true.
14. You feed your dog Science Diet instead of McDonaldÂ’s.
Don't own a dog.
15. Sleeping on the couch makes your back hurt.
Thankfully this isn't the case even today.
16. You no longer take naps from noon to 6 p.m.
I've never done this. Again, school and full-time job.
17. Dinner and a movie = The whole date instead of the beginning of one.
This has always been the case for me.
18. Eating a basket of chicken wings at 3 a.m. would severely upset, rather than settle, your stomach.
I was rarely out past 2 a.m., so it was a non-issue.
19. You go to the drugstore for Ibuprofen and antacids, not condoms and pregnancy test kits.
I've bought condoms from a drugstore maybe five times. And those times were mostly in my late twenties when I owned a home and was a captain in the Army.
20. A $4.00 bottle of wine is no longer ‘pretty good stuff.’
I would save my money and buy a nice $10 bottle of wine on Friday nights to have with dinner. I never could stand most of the under-$5 stuff.
21. You actually eat breakfast foods at breakfast time.
Besides the occasional bowl of cereal as a snack while studying, yes. Again, 8am classes and a full-time job.
22. “I just can’t drink the way I used to,” replaces “I’m never going to drink that much again.”
I rarely drank enough that this was a problem.
23. Over 90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work.
I'm a geek, so this has never been true, but it's hardly a sign that one isn't a real adult.
24. You donÂ’t drink at home to save money before going to a bar.
I've never done this. Not even in college.

The most sad and humorless blooper reel in television.
The out-takes often tell you a lot about what life on the set was like, and life on this set was clearly pain, misery and hopelessness.

(Note that various North American aboriginal tribes think the western sections of America are "their" lands too and have no intention of signing a quitclaim.)
As P.J. O'Rourke notes, Mexicans are still pissed that Americans stole half their country. The half with all of the jobs, sanitary plumbing and paved roads, as luck would have it.

Come to think of it, I had the hots for just about every daughter on every sitcom back then.
But there was something about Lynn Tanner.
Also, for those of you who may remember the younger, taller, more bookish daughter on "Charles in Charge":

Who'd have thought she'd grow up to be vastly hotter than Nicole Eggert?

NewsRadio. Bill McNeal, one of the greatest sitcom characters ever.
Although, I have mixed feelings. It's hilarious on-screen, but when you listen to the DVD commentary, you realize that most of the actors hated each other's guts, with the notable exception of Phil Hartman.
Posted by: IllTemperedCur at February 27, 2014 07:56 PM (aYjRw)
306...No, NewsRadio had Joe Rogan, Phil Hartmann, David something or other, and I believe the staple guy from Office Space.
Really under rated but funny as hell.
Oooh yeah...I know which one you're talking about.
Caught a few episodes of that.

She's got about 3-4 years of shelf life left. Almost every band/singer has a "peak" time of about 7-8 years. - Ashley Judd
My prediction re Katy Perry: after she's dead to the mainstream pop charts for a while, she'll try to make a comeback... as a gospel artist.
Remember, that's how she started.

Well, he did just admit that spiraling college debt -- you may remember that part of Obamacare took over the issuance of student loans -- is a problem.
He's still thrashing around with strawmen and stereotypes, though. It'd be nice if he'd cough up something more interesting.

Did you think before you typed that?
That's a serious question.
Are we really reduced to the point that the fear keeping us up at night is Obama's grand army of college debtors? Really?
I'm a college debtor. Are you expecting me to be part of Obama's blitzkrieg corpse? Sure, student loans can't be discharged in bankruptcy. So what? If there's no jobs to be had, you don't have any income, so there is also nothing they can do about it. It's a giant stalemate, not leverage.

Ok morans, you might think this is interesting. Let's take a stroll through every ancient civilization and read what they had to say about the beginning of the world. Caution, it's quite shocking. I'm doing this as a refresher, but I recently learned all of this and was BLOWN AWAY by what I learned. Sorry for the huge length, but it's ONT and this is some cool shit.
SUMERIA: In 2500 BC the poets and scholars of Sumeria wrote the legend of creation, which consisted of a primitive Paradise and a terrible flood that engulfed and destroyed it because of the sin of an ancient king. In 1929, Professor Woolley, digging into the ruins of Ur, discovered at a significant depth, an 8 foot layer of silt and clay which he believed represented the flood period.
One Sumerian legend told of how Adapa, a sage of Eridu, had been initiated into all lore by Ea, goddess of wisdom; one secret only had been refused him -- the knowledge of deathless life. Another Sumerian legend narrated how the gods had created man happy; how man, by his free will had sinned, and had been punished with a flood, from which but one man -- Tagtug the weaver -- had survived. Tagtug forfeited longevity and health by eating the fruit of the forbidden tree.
EGYPT: The first god was the sun god Ra, who created man and woman, which were perfect and happy. But their descendants had taken to evil ways and Ra, dissatisfied with his creatures, had destroyed a large part of the human race.
BABYLON: The Babylonian story of creation consists of seven tablets (one for each day of creation) found in the ruins of Ashurbanipal's library at Kuyunjik (Nineveh) in 1854. Chaos existed and nothing existed. Chaos equaled the monster goddess Tiamat, and Marduk another main god slew Tiamat and split the dead Tiamat into two longitudinal halves in which he formed the earth and the sky.
Marduk then kneaded the earth with his blood and thereby make men for the service of the gods. Different versions differ on the precise way this happened, but all histories agree that in general man was fashioned by the deity from a lump of clay.
Due to man's acquirement of knowledge from a monster called Oannes, half fish and half philosopher, the gods became dissatisfied with the men whom they had created, and sent a great flood to destroy them and all their works.
The god of wisdom, Ea, took pity on mankind, and resolved to save one man at least -- Shamash-napishtim - and his wife. The flood raged; men encumbered the sea like fishes' spawn. Then suddenly the gods wept and gnashed their teeth at their own folly, asking themselves "Who will make the accustomed offerings now?"
But Shamash-napishtim had built an ark, had survived the flood, had perched on the mountain of Nisir, and had sent out a reconnoitering dove; now he decided to sacrifice to the gods who accepted his sacrifice.
The survivors of the flood live forever and Marduk is described as a god who can give life back to the dead. Human sacrifice sometimes occurred, but the lamb took that place. Text reads: "The lamb as a substitute for man, the lamb he gives for his life."
In the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest literary works ever, Gilgamesh a direct descendant of Shamash-napishtim, ponders is there no escape from death. His ancestor eluded death. So he sets out to find him. He goes through a mountain for twelve miles and then begs Sabitu, virgin goddess of the seas, to let him pass through the ocean and tempest. He takes forty days to arrive at the Happy Island were lives Shamash-napishtim, possessor of immortal life.
Gilgamesh begs of him the secret of deathlessness. Shamash-napishtim answers by telling him the story of the flood, and how the gods, relenting of their mad destructiveness made him and his wife immortal because they had preserved the human species. He offers Gilgamesh a plant whose fruit will confer renewed youth upon him who eats it; Gilgamesh is happy and goes home. On the way home he stops to bathe and while he is bathing a serpent crawls by and steals the plant.
ASSYRIA: Ashur, was a solar god and the main national god. Unfortunately no religious texts survive except for omens and exorcisms, nor are there any texts that survive that discuss the Assyrian view of creation.
PERSIA: Thus spake Zarathustra. Here appeared a great prophet in Airyana-vaejo, or the Aryan homeland. He was called Zarathustra. His conception was divine through a plant in which a guardian angel was placed. The juice of the plant was consumed by a priest and a ray of light passed the juice into a maid of noble lineage.
Zarathustra left the world of man to live in the mountains. The Devil tempted him their but to no avail. Ahura-Mazda, the Lord of Light, revealed himself as the supreme god and gave unto him the Avesta or Book of Knowledge and Wisdom and bade him to teach mankind. But he was scorned by the people. At last a high prince of Iran, Vishtaspa promised to spread the new Zoroastrian faith to the people.
The creation of the world was accomplished in six periods (the heavens, the waters, the earth, plants, animals, man) the descent of all men from two first parents, the establishment of an earthly paradise, the discontent of the Creator with his creation, and his resolve to destroy all but a remnant of it by a flood.
The world is conceived in dualistic terms as the stage of conflict, lasting twelve thousand years, between the god Ahura-Mazda and the devil Ahriman, purity and honesty are the greatest of the virtues and will lead to everlasting life; the dead must not be buried or burned but must be thrown to the dogs or to birds of prey.
INDIA/MOHENJO-DARO/ARYAN HOMELAND: From the Vedas comes the Hymn of Creation which talks about nothingness existing in the beginning. And then: “The Only One breathed breathless by itself.” It’s a long poem so I will not repeat it here, but it is very interesting and kind of follows the creation story, although more pantheistic and even skeptical to an extent.
My source for all of this was written in the 1930s, so more updates may be called for. I have excluded China, Japan and Korea from this history b/c frankly they are not ancient civilizations, none go back farther than 2500 yrs. I also have excluded the Hittites, Phoenicians, Syrians and other minor players because just not enough is known about them.
Anyway, I hope you found this interesting. I sure as hell did.

To include people who didn't even realize they were ingesting too much vitamin A.
Early Arctic explorers who shot and butchered and ate polar bears. Including the liver. Shortly thereafter ending up in acute trouble far from medical help. Polar bears make and store a whole lot of the stuff -- not known to said explorers. And humans can't just casually pee out an excess.

The problem is that generic solutions are worthless. In general, with sufficient hydration, C is one of the toughest vitamins to get to do you harm.....but with the right setup.....
It's like the thing about taking a children's aspirin every day -- that got me a nasty attack of gout. And yet, everyone in my (mom's side) family seriously benefits from taking high-dose B vitamins -- it's almost like taking replacement thyroid hormone, the effect is that immediate and clear.

But I've got Sumeria, Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, India, and Persia. It's been a long time, but if you know enough to ask that question, maybe you can understand my attempt at an answer. Modern Algebra at least by itself was straightforward enough. Analysis gave me headaches. Topology seemed the most interesting. But I had to pass exams on all three to stay in the program and only passed the first two. I thought I understood the big theorem that lets you go back and forth between homology and cohomology, but I never really had my head as well wrapped around the trick in the finite portion of the sets involved as I thought I did.
So I didn't really get to the specialization stage, and in any case failed the exam I cared most about, so that was that.

It really depends on why you want a Strat. Compared to a LP, a Strat has a narrower fingerboard with more curve, a better cutaway, a bunch of brighter -- though noisier and thinner -- tones, and balances different when you carry it. Which of these things is most important to you?
If I wanted a Strat sound, I could use a Strat-style Roland Guitar Synth controller (made by Ibanez) I have which would deliver -- and sustains out the yin-yang because it's neck-through-body -- but the goddamned thing weighs a ton. Alternatively, I get the pickup configuration without the hassle of a body at all (better cutaway than the better cutaway!) from my little Korean Steinberger. Both have the closer finger spacing and curvier fingerboards, though....

They're now the largest and most prosperous Indian tribe. Their land isn't exactly a "reservation" in the normal sense of the word, because they bought it outright after the Trail of Tears relocation, figuring that that way they at least would have a defense against being forced off their land again. And, they tend to vote Republican.

I have thought ahead and upgraded to Tin using miles.
"No, but I've been staking out the neighborhood dogs and feel confident that I can take 'em."
It seems like all dogs in Commiefornia are converging into one of three types:
(a) Scary pits and other fighting dogs in chain leashes and spiked collars,
(b) Dopey loveable methlabs who just want to play all the time,
(c) Barky chihuahuas, poms and other purse dogs.
Not all of these mix very well (a metaphor for Commiefornia as a whole).
At the market the other day, someone had left their (c) dog outside and it went after a (b) dog rather aggressively. The Lab seems to have thought this was fun. Oh boy! A new play buddy! Whereas an (a) category dog would have immediately turned the (c) dog into a dishrag.

I'm trying to figure out just what strat tone you want. An SRV tone? Hendrix tone? David Gilmour/pink floyd tone? Vintage strat tone? A general do it all strat thing?
I need to know because fender alone probably has 1/2 dozen different sets of custom shop pickups, and some are very good at doing certain things, and some actually come in certain strats from the factory that may fit in your budget. there are also some really good aftermarket strat pickups that can be had cheap. You could have a damn nice guitar with the right planning. I went through it with strats, I still have at least a dozen of them, and most are set up different from each other. The pickup choices alone make then stand apart from each other. Then you got the guitars themselves. Some have flatter radius boards with 22 frets, some have more of a radius with 21 frets. Some have vintage style bridges, some have more modern 2 point bridges, etc etc.

I am reminded of the term antediluvian from the White Wolf World of Darkness rpg setting. It applied to the third generation of vampires whose wickedness made the Flood necessary.
I always loved how the setting simultaneously had were-creatures with genetic memories covering a billion years of evolution and vampires who could trace their lineage back to the Biblical Cain and never felt the need to resolve the contradiction.

That came up as rod fucking stewart.
Ok we'll do this the long way.
The
one strat I like is the Highway One. There are 2 different ones. The
2002 to around 2005/6 have medium jumbo frets, and a vintage string
spacing at the bridge, vintage size headstock, and a set of somewhat
vintage sounding pickups. The 2006-2011 ones have full jumbo frets, much
hotter pickups, larger 1970's style headstock, and a narrower string
spacing at the bridge like the regular american standards. Both have
flatter radius boards and 22 frets. The highway 1 has a "somewhat"
vintage vibe to it, are usually light in weight, and play really
good when they are set up. I have ones here that hold their own against
the real '62 sitting here. You can usually get into one for $500,
sometimes less. I think I paid $430 for one in a honey blonde finish
with a maple board that is just incredible. They have a super thin matt
finish on them, but its real lacquer, not poly, so they are usually
pretty resonant. They replaced that series a couple years ago with the
American special, which is the same guitar, only with a gloss poly
finish and custom shop texas special pickups. I have seen those in the
$5-600 range used.
Then you have the full blown American standard, or standard series, or whatever the fuck they call them these days. They have the more modern 2 point bridge, hand rolled fingerboard edge, 2 way truss rods, and are usually poly but there have been some with a thin skin lacquer finish. The last few years they started using the vintage style stamped saddles on that 2 point bridge rather than the solid block like saddles they used for years on those. The newer somewhat recent ones have the custom shop fat 50's pickups. You want something from the early 2000's -up, no older, or else you end up with a huge swimming pool route under the pickguard, and a frigging veneered body on the sunburst models, so its best to go no older than 2001. I "think" the 2007 -up ones got the hand rolled fingerboard edge. I scored a mint 2003 in black with a maple neck last year for $550, and an unplayed 2004 mint white one with a rosewood board for $600. At any rate, those few series of strats are very nice.

Here's some interesting science. Some research (I am not aware of contradictory research) suggests that the end of the last ice age happened really quickly. In as little as a few hundred years, or a thousand or so. sediments from the caribbean indicate that the runoff from the rivers increased manyfold about that time. Not trying to cram legends into fact, but the Bible speaks in metaphors. If there were great floods in the recent enough past that human legends recall them, is that surprising?

Honestly not trying to go Four Yorkshiremen on you, but up here round SF, it's hailing. Seriously.
The forecast was for late rain. But I heard the first round hit the windows. Ping! Tang! Cling! Um, that doesn't sound rainy. And it's not.
Small hail littering the yard.
I figure outside ground level air temp is about 55F. It'll melt fast.

Ok morans, you might think this is interesting. Let's take a stroll
through every ancient civilization and read what they had to say about
the beginning of the world. Caution, it's quite shocking. I'm doing this
as a refresher, but I recently learned all of this and was BLOWN AWAY
by what I learned. Sorry for the huge length, but it's ONT and this is
some cool shit."

Thanks for the info! The Highway 1 sounds like what I'm looking for. I wish I lived in a bigger town where I'd have a shop with a fair-sized selection of Strats to choose from. The one I typically go to tends to have a lot of shredder-type guitars like Schecters and ESP's -- which are nice and all, just not what I'm looking for. They also carry some G n' L stuff, but they're a pretty good jump from my price range.
I've thought about hitting the pawn shops, but I just don't see how you can get a good idea of what the guitars will sound like when you have to play them through amps that you don't know anything about. And, let's face it, you're not going to get a hell of a lot of useful information about pickups, hardware, etc. out of a pawn broker.
Thanks again!

If the Japanese ever get truly serious about lighting stuff up, on the largest scale, look out. They can do it.
I was reading the stats on which nations have large stashes of weaponizable plutonium, and I had to go back and shake my head and rub my eyes on the numbers for Japan. Berserk. Off the charts. More per capita than anyone else in the world, I would wager. And they have the technological plant to make that which is not weapons ready, into that which is.
There's an old adage that if you get in a military scrap with China, assume for starters that you can kill the unprecedented number of a million Chinese per day, and then go from there to compute how long till victory. It takes a while.
The unnerving thing is that Japan probably could attain or exceed that rate if they were to go nuclear.
The really unnerving thing is how the Chinese and the Japanese are getting closer and closer to coming to blows over territorially significant oceanic island dots.

I'm thinking of going straight to the tasting menu.
So, one of those stories....the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is one of the premier cooking schools in the US. They have a Napa campus and a NY campus.
At the Napa campus, they have a restaurant that they use as a "finishing school". I'm not sure the exact rollout, but it's like: If you're a first year chef, you bus the tables. Second years are the wait staff. Third years, you sous-chef. Fourth years actually do the line-cooking....all under the supervision of the master (teaching) chefs. So the BH and I went there.
The menu had all sorts of nifty things on it, and we were having trouble deciding. The waiter (in training to be a Sommelier) asked if he might assist us....and I said, "I thought there might be a tasting menu." He looked thoughtful, said, "hold on", disappeared for a couple of minutes, and came back, and said, "there is, $120 " -- whereupon we folded our menus and said, "done!"
For the next three hours, we had a nonstop parade of sampler dishes delivered to our table. It was so wildly over-the-top that I hardly know how to describe it....neighboring tables were staring. My guess is that the word got round that anyone who had missed an assignment during their last four years of study could do a makeup by delivering a flawless example to table 29.
I suspect that a lot of chefs weren't happy with their grades from desserts class, because when we finally hit that stage, we were getting multiple plates with up to 9 desserts on each plate -- just a spoonful of each.
Overall, it was one of the most surreal, awesome, and enjoyable experiences we've ever had.

FSpoke - I am absolutely OCD about checking for ticks after reading about Lyme years ago.
The possibility of having it for an extended period of time without a diagnosis is so high due to the highly variable symptoms. Kind of hard to peg that one down quickly, and so many people are looked at as hypochondriacs (sp?) because of all of the vague symptom complaints.
Wishing you well, and I note that you have the best attitude - One day at a time

Truth is, we've been so busy it doesn't much feel like one. On the one hand, every day is another milestone -- yet, on the other, each pales against the prospect of tomorrow. We've been around the world together -- from Fiji to St. Petersburg; we've been together at 36,000 feet and 170 feet underwater; we've relied on the other when helpless....and each dragged the other out of a serious bind or two.
This should be a nice dinner....but there will come another day very soon when I can say, "I've spent more time with this woman than I ever spent apart from her." That statement has a lot more "oomph" than just checking the box on a calendar.

I was shmacked down on tax info by a certain late night accountant on one of my first nights posting. HAHA

I really have no idea how long I've been posting here - it's not too long, less than a year I guess. Mostly I post from work because it keeps me awake in the control room. That's also one of the reasons I seem to be gone for odd lengths of time - crazy schedule

Conservative Crank and Peaches also typed nice things. *Hah!* Peaches actually said something really, really nice and then misspelled my Nomenclature... lol.
I think she called me "Slapwesal" around one year ago.
I typed, "Someday, the 'ettes will actually spell my name correctly, but that's as cool as it gets tonight. Thanks!"
B.C. was easy to get along with because I wanted to be a pitcher, and he knows baseball.
...sorry for the Trip Down Memory Lane, but I've only been here for a year and I feel pretty damn "At Home."

Sorry, but that's not what happened. The black box was recovered and revealed russian ATC warning them at least twice to NOT land due to inclement weather and low visiblity. One of the Polish honchos voices was heard on the recording inside the cockpit demanding the pilots land despite ATC commands.

They have an "R" after their name but they still act like Democrats as mush as they can get away with. And they can get away with a LOT because most people just don't pay any attention to what is going on at the State House.
Which is incredibly stupid. Here is a possible reason. The newspapers don't cover what is going on there and TV news covers very little.
