So morons, just how manly are you? Take the manliness test and find out. My results said I was as manly as Brian Blessed, shouting like an avalanche.
h/t Top 10 Coolest Sci-Fi Guns

Hmmm. I'm not sure I agree with some of the choices on this list of the Top 10 Coolest Sci-Fi Weapons. Maybe add the Auto-9 from the original RoboCop or the LAPD 2019 blaster from Bladerunner.
Gun Stuff
February 20th, 1839 Congress banned dueling. I agree with Weasel Zippers. Bring dueling back.
BrewBurger

I wonder how the BrewBurger tastes. Supposedly, it contains enough alcohol that it requires an ID to purchase.
The limited edition BrewBurger, dreamed up by BrewDog co-founder James Watt and Honest Burgers co-founder Tom Barton, is a 150g aged beef patty with Comté cheese and bacon glazed with BrewDog’s iconic amber ale, 5AM Saint. The BrewBurger is topped with beef dripping and beer fried onions using BrewDog’s flagship Punk IPA and a BBQ reduction made from BrewDog’s Paradox cask-aged Imperial Stout.
A bottle beer, named Bourbon Baby, has been created by BrewDog to complement the dish - a barrel aged baby scotch ale with notes of spice and brown sugar designed to bring out the complex sweetness of the burger.
Olympics
Yes. The Olympics could use some livefire like this!
Embrace The Suck
Jeez, even teachers' unions are starting to notice Common Core sucks.
On Wednesday, Politico’s Stephanie Simon reported: “The nation’s largest teachers union is pulling back on its once-enthusiastic support of the Common Core academic standards, labeling their rollout ‘completely botched.’”
What a surprise. Another botched rollout. Has anything not been botched with this Administration?
Virtual Dressing Rooms

eBay snags a startup that helps you try on clothes virtually. I'm sure it won't be as good as KnickerPicker is.

Auto-Brewery Syndrome
Is this a bad thing? It would be cheaper than having to buy booze. Man's stomach turns starchy and sugary foods into alcohol.
34-year-old Matthew Hogg has a rare condition – auto-brewery syndrome. Every time he eats starchy or sugary foods, his body converts the food into alcohol that is released into his blood stream. This alcohol is so strong that he ends up intoxicated without even touching a single drink.

OK, 'rons and 'ettes, forgive me if I whine. Here's my past three months.
Mom flew up from Arkansas to see us for Thanksgiving. Fell and broke her hip the second day here. Successful surgery, rehab went slowly but well, December 31 they thought she would be ready for release, able to take care of herself in three or four weeks. January 5 she got pneumonia, seemed to recover quickly, but died four day later. Phone calls at 1230 in the morning are never good news.
Wife (who, btw, is a saint) and I made two trips to clean out mom's apartment (six sixteen hour days; no complaints, there is no one else I would want to do that); memorial service, consignments to a furniture store, distributing stuff to nephews and niece. A week ago the moving van delivered twenty boxes and some furniture. There is no hurry to unpack. Mom and Dad had some neat stuff and it is a nice legacy, but I'd rather have her here.
She was 90, in good health, sound mind and good spirits to the end, beloved by friends and family, still active at her church, happy and content. One of my daughters and I visited with her five hours before she died. She went very peacefully in her sleep. There was nothing we needed from each other, nothing left unsaid. I can not imagine a better end to a long full life, but she leaves a big hole in my heart.
She had kept Dad's cane in the closet since he died fourteen years ago. I brought it back and intend to sit on the front porch this summer and shake it at passing teenagers.

JLA Adventures: Trapped In Time, described as a cross between Justice League Unlimited and Super Friends. With a Marvin and Wendy cameo even. Got a good review.

1. yes, definitely the Bladerunner pistol
The prop was made from a cut-down mannlicher rifle and bulldog revolver. Search Youtube for Adam of Mythbusters. He collects replicas and made a 40 min video of the different versions.
2. Proton pack - Ghostbusters
Technically not a 'firearm' but we're talking sci-fi. Awesome. Iconic as iconic gets.
3. D.S. Pistol - Logan's Run
The prop had a carbide and water system to create the green 'flame' and gas effect. Again, iconic.

What'd you think of the debate over all?
I thought Dinesh was good. Provided a very positive view for
his adoptive country, while recognizing that imperfect as it may be, no
place on Earth has done and has the potential for good that we do.
But, in a way, wish it was someone like Mark Steyn up there who would've likely sliced the terrorist p.o.s. to shreds when he tried to twist an answer or just rambled with his commie bullshit.

Oh, I know it's early for this to devolve into a gun thread, but forgot that I have a new purchase to mention: M&P 22 semi-auto pistol. Got it because the lawless idiotic shithole known as California announced their ridiculous "safe" handgun roster would henceforth require incorporation of a non-existent technology (in the commercial sense) for continued availability to the serfs, er, citizens of the Golden State.
The M&P 22 is "expiring" in May. S&W and Ruger have publicly stated they will make no effort to comply with the absurd, useless, and basically impossible requirement just added to the outrageous roster process, so any already-rostered handgun seeing a design change (and note: blued vs. stainless is considered a design difference in the orwellian system in place) from now on will probably just disappear.
Anyway, have shot it three times with 4 kinds of 22LR (I happened to have bought a bunch about 2-3 years ago, now it's appreciated more than the gold I have in the bank ...). No problems. Sweet little gun.

Been a while since I was there, but as I recall the beach was rocks and the view was of the nearby ag and industrial facilities.
For all its pretensions, Malibu it's not. That area of Ventura is more or less a working town.

New Orleans food. You have a few days to listen? There is always Cafe du Mond down in the Quarter. There are also other hole in the wall dives with great food. The Riverwalk and Aquarium has food vendors but its not real New Orleans cuisine. For a po-boy, Ralph and Kacoos is the place - the French bread they use is correct, light crispy, and will soak up about a quart of gravy if you order the roast beef that you will then use a fork and knife to eat.

I've never gone the mid-town tunnel way for the commute. I mostly go the I-64 to Chesapeake Expressway route. Sometimes I have to take Battlefield and then head south or like today, take Greenbrier and then south. I used to cut through downtown and then bypass the tunnel and hit 464 south but I got stuck downtown once where I moved one cityblock in one hour and never did that again.

NDH, not a knock on Gulfport, but Port Hueneme has lots of potential. You'll be 1.5 hours from downtown LA, or similar times from other parts of the area. So if you want to explore endless awesome ethnic eating spots, or the LA beaches, or the USS Iowa down in San Pedro, or the Huntington Library and gardens in Pasadena/San Marino, or the Getty museums (try the Villa in Malibu vs. the big monster on the hill, if you ask me), etc. - there's that.
To the north, Santa Barbara is just 1 hour away. One hour beyond that begins the awesome central coast region of CA. Beautiful, quiet, friendly, besotted with excellent wines and wineries, scenic beaches and hills. My favorite part of CA, perhaps.
If you're "stuck" in Port Hueneme itself, unable to travel, Ventura nearby is a nice little town. Some good eats there too. And nice little farm towns not far away, up and away from the coast (Santa Paula). Good air museum at the Camarillo airport.

Subject: Your loss.
Brother Jim. From one Jim to another.
My most sincere condolence to you and your family, as regards the loss of your beloved mother. Nothing left unsaid, how I envy you that!
I can say only that her parting on that note, is perhaps the greatest testament to your heart, your character and your love to one another.
Though I know in my heart, that she's already in Glory at the right hand of The Throne, still, my prayers ascend for you and her, both. For peace, solace, comfort and the everlasting assurance that His love is abiding, everlasting and powerful beyond our greatest imaginings.
A salute also to your wife. That, sir, is a woman fit and worthy to stand by a man.
In this rough, and mournful time..... count yourself blessed. Too many men never have even ONE worthy woman in their lives.
Godspeed, Jim's moms. Both of ours.....

In the meantime, anyone else here enjoy old-fashioned yellow vanilla custard?? I've noticed it's impossible to find the Jell-O or Americana brands in stores anymore. Even Amazon doesn't seem to carry bulk packages. Was at Albertson's last week and decided to pick up a British brand of classic custard they happen to have in stock, called Bird's Custard Powder.
Only problem: the instructions on the Bird's Custard are written in Mary Poppins English. "Implement milk to powder and a-whisk in the classic Cavendish style for a miniature fifthnight until air-abobs are a-flutter with delightful cadence at surface. Let substance plaint alone on the hob for another two miniature fifthnights, then introduce to four cauldrons of alabaster coreshard."

I remember those from the early (early!!) 70s. Haven't visited one in decades - ever since they switched to pressed meat products.
Did they ever go back to hanging sides of beef in in roasters next to the register? Did they ever go back to actually putting real roast beef in the sandwiches?

Arby's is actually quite good. Not on the menu, the BLT....you have to ask for it. It's worth asking for.
I've been kind of scarce the past couple of weeks. The four boys my wife and I have fostered for the last 3.5 years have been returned to their bio mom. In her defense, she did clean her act up. I wish her the best...but miss the boys.
And then yesterday we got a call from the foster agency. Three more boys, the youngest, just shy of three years old, and just out of the hospital a year ago after suffering 26 broken bones, (one parental unit is already in prison for this). Middle boy at five years of age was institutionalized by his grandmother....for acting like a boy. The eldest has been drugged for ADHD since he was three.
The sad thing about this....we've seen worse. Much worse.
We take custody of the boys tomorrow.

BCochoran,
For all the aforementioned reasons, go with the nine.
I'll add my reason here. What you're discussing is a "shoot little, carry often" type of gun. It is not the practice and proficiency gun, other than breaking it in, making sure it's zeroed, and ensuring that she's skilled in it's use.
The PRACTICE gun is some kind of .22, or even a police surplus, .38 revolver, or similar surplus 9mm, such as a S ampersand W Model 59 or it's variants.
SMALL GUNS ARE HARDER TO SHOOT WELL. That's the gospel. They're not pleasant to shoot, either, and will discourage her from the amount of practice it takes to achieve true proficiency.
Full size gun for practice, fun and even competition. Small gun for carry and protection.
Keep that formula in mind, and you won't go far wrong.

Nevergiveup, if you come out to Port Hueneme, go a couple of miles up to Ventura Harbor and eat at Brophy's. Great seafood. Last month we had the guys from our Texas shop come out to CA for meetings. Took 'em to Brophy's and it was a big hit. Even with the one guy who only eats beef ("if I can't rope it or ride it, I don't eat it!"). He was impressed with the steaks. Pretty good praise from a calf-roping cowboy engineer.
During the summer, whale-watching season is pretty cool out of Ventura into the Channel Islands. Over the last 4th of July holiday, I took my brother and family out on the whale-watching dayboat, and we had a BLAST.

My condolences. Yes, even if a parent or relative had a long, full, good life, their loss always leaves a hole in your heart. When my mother died, I felt like I could literally feel a hole in my heart. I had an actual pain there - and I was only 25 at the time.

That's a shame, I went through the part of Oxnard that was near the beach and it looked like a really nice town. I would imagine that there's some pretty nasty parts of town where the folks who pick the onions live
Sarasota FL is a really nice town, but there's some sections you don't want to be in even in the daytime. I imagine that Ft Myers and Cape Coral can say the same

Tip: heavier guage strings and tune down a half-step. With SRV, tone is more than half the battle. Even on a Thinline that setup will help.

VERY tricky. Probably not the best place to start, but if you get it, you have SRV. And yes, the picking stroke (ahem) is very asymmetrical.
Eh... try playing that with a drummer who can't articulate a shuffle to save his life some time. There's a challenge... (i.e., not to shoot the drummer).

Heh.
Funny that Oxnard ghettos and White Castle comes up. About 10 years back, I was on a working trip to Chicago, with one of my techs who grew up in one of the Oxnard ghettos, La Colonia. Big guy, looked like a hispanic Ving Rhames. Ran with one of the gangs early in life, and had the tattoos to prove it. We were on the South Side and I took him to White Castle for lunch, across the street from some of the projects, and the bag lady in front of us was arguing with the poor counter guy who was just trying to take care of her problem so she'd go away.
All of a sudden she screams out I'M NOT YOUR MOTHERFUCKING WOMAN! Which brings the security guard from outside. After she was dragged out by the armpits, Tony leans over to me wide-eyed and says "After all this time, NOW I've seen the 'hood."

Did anyone else watch the Dinesh D'Sousa-Bill Ayers debate at Dartmouth tonight? It was on C-Span. Overall, I think D'Sousa did a good job.
Ayers? Jeez, I was screaming "Liar! Douchebag!" at the TV. And some of the obvious lefty students that asked "gotcha" questions of D'Sousa - these are Ivy League students? They could barely get a coherent sentence out.
One of the best moments was when this Korean Dartmouth student scolded D'Sousa for thinking America is so great. The scrunt went on about the Indians, slavery, Vietnam etc. and said many people abroad don't think America is so hot. D'Sousa pointed out to the fool that if America had not fought the Korean War, the North would have overrun the South and she wouldn't have the luxury of attending Dartmouth to bitch about America.
Yeah, it didn't occur to the dipshit that if not for the US, she would be gnawing on grass right now.

Was that Nevergiveup, not NDH, going to Port Hueneme or Gulfport? Well duh, must be him, he's Navy medical.
IllTemperedCur, I don't know how much free time he'll have, but I suggested your area because LA and central coast are very close, and have so much to do/see/eat/drink.
One time coming down the 101 from a central coast wine trip, I pulled off into Oxnard, as I was dying for a good taco. A real one. Of course I knew Oxnard had a big Mexican community, so chances were 100% I could find a good taco if I looked. Took one of the first lefts there in the old downtown area, immediate right - and behold, a Mexico City-style taco place (small tortillas, open-faced) with outstanding food and so authentic nobody there spoke even a small bit of polite everyday English (super friendly too).
Oh, and at the end of that same road (Oxnard Blvd?), near the beach, right across from some kind of Navy facility, there is (was?) an excellent V'mese place, pho and all the other stuff too.
Speaking of food, Nip Sip I also loved the Double R Burger @ Roy Rogers. DC area, early 1980s. Mmmmm. Ham on top and that tangy BBQ sauce.

Wonder if I should do the bogus, originally aired order, or the actual, pilot-first order...

He carried Vera during War Stories, but never fired a shot with her. All his shooting was with that little pistola.
Wasn't in the Serenity movie at all. 99% certain she wasn't in the Serenity pilot episode either.

Hi, Carol!
Ayers was such a liar during the debate, I nearly spit on the TV when he was talking. He talked about how corporations run the government (no, Billy, the government cuts deals with favored corporations thanks to the JEF you helped inflict on this country).
He went on about how conservatives are "suppressing" the vote, and - most ridiculously - how there are just tons of evangelical Christians on the faculties of college campuses so they're not discriminated against at all. Yep, college campuses are just the height of tolerance.
Some sinister turd who represented the atheist/agnostic group on campus asked if religion should be even more repressed by the government so "we can progress." You could tell he's all in favor of that idea. I was heartened to see that guy got very little applause.

That takes getting used to on this blog. What you see the comments box is not what actually posts. Until I understood that you have to click on view/edit source to comment I was just typing and editing away in the comments box and then wondering why there were no spaces between my words.

I have to give credit to Dartmouth, I suppose, for letting D'Sousa speak and not shouting him down. That's unusual for college campuses. I doubt he'd be able to speak a word at UW Madison.
In (about) 2003 or 2004, I went to a local high school where Daniel Pipes was speaking about Islam. Muslims tried to shout him down. I specifically remember some fat Muslim woman with a scarf on her head who hit the floor and started moaning and screaming like a wounded manatee when he dared to criticize the saintly Palestinians. Security guards finally got off their asses and carried her out (and 4 were necessary to haul her giant ass out of there).

Continuing my research on rifles--lots of good reviews on the old Browning A-bolts, the newer ones seem to not have the same reputation though, and I can't tease out why from what I've seen on several forums. X-bolts also mixed reviews, like most modern rifles. Next up--Ruger. Heard a few people sing the praises of the Hawkeye, anyone with experience with that or the Ruger American? Also saw one or two Marlin X-series fanatics--I always thought of Marlins as .22 plinking guns, but I guess they do make full-sized calibers as well.

No real worries. Syfy generally reruns 'made for' programming later in the evening and usually a couple of times the next week, which you can tell if your cable/dish/whatever system has detailed info on the episodes, but since you were just flipping channels there's no real way to know that.
Now if you want real entertainment, find IFC and watch The Spoils of Babylon...

I got the same results answering honestly. It was a tad tricky though. The PC question is a good example. I could fix every mechanical problem they threw at me, but the PC was actually tricky, because it had an option of tearing into it and fixing it, or basically destroy it. I'm known to beat on inanimate objects and utterly crush their existence when they don't obey, so even though I could fix the PC, if the attempt to fix the PC failed, it would definitely die as a scrap heap, so I had to just answer the question as ripping it apart and dipping it in acid as the end result.

Seriously, Sock something, correct the sock in that tab, refresh a DIFFERENT tab, up pops the sock. I see a CS doctoral thesis layup here: "Obscure Idiosyncratic Reactions Within Pixy Misa Blog Code." Eighty-nine pages of drivel, and it's back to the Val-u-Rite.

Thank you so much for your concern, CC. I'm not really at a point to evaluate inner peace, but I've become quite concerned about outer sloppiness and I'll be working on that for a bit.

Plan to split California into six states gains ground
1) I do not see it happening.
2) If it did happen, I am sure the lines for the new states would be drawn in such a way to where it provided 10 additional safe democrat senators. Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 22, 2014 03:21 AM (TGgNi) Hide posts from (TGgNi)
You little understand the intra-state dynamics of this place. That "solid" Democrat control is utterly loathed and despised by the +/-45% minority trapped in this mess. Driving up to Oregon in October, there are many patriotic and anti-statist billboards in the state of Jefferson along the highways -- they are not your usual LIV.
That said, I don't see it happening either....sad to say. It would be the beginning of the end of the "shut up, that's why" school of government, and there are way too many vested interests in that.

So sorry you have to deal with it, being that its sole 'raison d'etre' is to breach doctor/patient privilege.

Mark Levin had some guy involved with this on his show last night (er... Thurs night). Mark asked him about this several times because he was worried too. The guy's explanation was not the most convincing, but he explained it something like this --
- Right now, CA offers the Dems a +2 advantage in the senate. Locked in for as long as the eye can see.
-
If this split passes, he figures it would bring at worst 4
new R's and 8 D's. Which would actually be a gain of 2 D's (because right now CA
already gives them the +2). Not encouraging. But who knows, maybe the split creates new dynamics, and offers a chance to break them free of the Dem brainwashing.
- He actually predicted, the way the split is laid out, the more likely result would be 6 and 6 or even 8 R's and 4 new D's. Have no idea where that confidence comes from, but... even an even split would actually swing a +2 advantage to our side because of who CA sends now, and an 8/4 split helps us by 4. Depending on the kind of R's sent this could be really encouraging.
Doing nothing he argued, CA is so boned, and this a way that could actually come to pass and change things there.

Okay...I'll stop now.
I always wanted to try that, and with the spacing in this place...you never know what it's going to end up looking like.

Cooth, it does have some legit uses--research, population data. The main reason hospitals like it, aside from it's mandated, is that it increases revenue because it makes the coding for billing easier.
However, the gov't should definitely GTFO of medical info.
Posted by: Conservative Crank at February 22, 2014 12:07 AM (sQ0LB)
The problem is, because of the way the split might fall out, you actually then make the dems more powerful on the federal level- which means the things that you do on the state level could be undone more easily by the dems on the federal ones.<<<
Oh, I agree, and Mark seemed very dubious of this guy's predictions.
Having more Dems would be a serious disaster. I would even argue, the new R's that they might vote could be just as bad if they're new Rinos like Snowe, or Graham, or McCain, etc.
At the end though, Mark even kinda had to question, how else can we change that state? It's a fiscal disaster, the demographics aren't going to allow it to get any better (and amnesty could make it worse), and the split (though a long shot) is an idea that has had traction in CA before.

There is nothing in the current regime that makes me want to lend it the benefit of the doubt -- and, as its abuses unfold, it'll contaminate those legit uses rapidly. I already wish I had never been as truthful with my physician as I've been, and plan on drastically self-censoring in the future.

How many will decline to answer or lie, then lie or dissemble again about concurrent medications because the first like smooths the path to the second? Electronic records accessible to an unaccountable government aren't a slippery slope, they're a horrific endgame that will inevitably cause unnecessary deaths. The further one delves into the malignancy that is Obamacare, the worse it gets.

Cooth, usually the frankly homicidal or suicidal will be institutionalized, so in the short term it doesn't matter if they lie to me or not. I don't care if John Q. Public with a head cold has an arsenal at home or not, and apparently in the ER the government doesn't either. I think primary care doctors are now mandated to ask, but I'm not sure as my last physical predated implementation of O-care. I don't recall it coming up on Mrs. Crank's prenatal visits either.
Remember, I didn't vote for this guy, I'm on your side.

Crank, I well know where I stand with you, and Mrs. Crank, and the anticipated wonderful event that is coming....I'm trying to give you advance notice over a "feature" of this law that will cause fearful effects within the practice of medicine.
Posted by: cthulhu at February 22, 2014 01:53 AM (T1005)
Preach it, brother. Hell, patients lie to me every day because they think I'll rat out their drug use to their employer or the cops or God only knows who, or they want to score drugs from me. But for everyone to feel they can't trust me because Big Brother can just swoop in and take my notes is only slightly less revolting than eavesdropping on priest and penitent for confession--and an agnostic or atheist would probably argue snooping on medical info is a bigger breach than the religious one.
That which cannot be tolerated, won't. That which is unsustainable will fail. The questions are how long it will be borne, and how large the body count will be at the reckoning.
God willing, those who love liberty will be more merciful than those who hate it.

And it's a fundamental part of the law.
I only hope that physicians everywhere understand what is at stake.

So, I'm awake. The driers are still running in the kitchen downstairs but not as many, so it still sounds like a jet engine but a small aircraft perhaps. Still, it's enough to make me want to minimize the time downstairs because it really gives me a headache. Hopefully, today we get back the partial use of the kitchen. The oven will probably still be in the dining area until the new floor is in but at least we'll have the use of the microwave and toaster oven.
I hate the weekends when I don't have any work. No point in having time off when you have too much time on your hands. I'd rather be working. If I were some brilliant creative sort I'd be doing something constructive but empty time is just more time to reflect on the failure to make anything of my life and knowing it's all downhill from here.
I really need to exercise more. It helps with the mood a little.
