Ragnarok is upon us. Another The End Is Here fail.

Keith Koffler goes country to country in search of one, single foreign policy success for Obama and finds nothing but fail. I'm sure we'll get another pivot or two that will finally work. Maybe. Ugh. It's gonna be a long three years. Disney Princess Drinks

A Magic Kingdom of mixed drinks. (Hi Rum!)

Corporal Punishment

I had no idea that nineteen states allow teachers to spank children. I figured that it had been outlawed as it is a pretty narrow line to cross before you potentially run into child abuse charges. Interesting to note that it is a Democrat in Kansas that is pushing a bill there to allow teachers to spank kids.

Die Hard In 60 Seconds

Operation Habbakuk

I hadn't heard the story of Operation Habbakuk until a Royal Navy exchange officer briefed my department on it the other day at work. Essentially, it was a plan to build a giant aircraft carrier out of an iceberg.

Savvy Girl

Genius move. Girl Scout is selling cookies outside a cannabis clinic. However, she only sold 37 more boxes outside the clinic than outside Safeway. Probably needs to add Fritos or Doritos to the table.

Sex Times

Sounds like a creepy app but the data it gathers is used to calculate which states have the longest and shortest sex. Of note, they count D.C. as a state giving a total of 51 on the list. If they are gonna count D.C., they may as well add Puerto Rico, Guam, etc.

45 seriously, you had never heard of ice carriers before? I have a feeling you are joking, they have been floating around in popsci and everywhere for decades. I did not see it mentioned in the articles linked above but the reason it was decided not to go forward with them is because they required too much plumbing and it was not the highest and best use of materials to build these at the time.

54 Ronda Rousey fights tonight UFC 170. It's actually the first time UFC has had a chick fight be the main event. In the past they put Rousey's fights as co-main with men's championship fights. Last time it was Anderson Silva. So he was the main and she was the co-main. This will be an interesting test of her drawing power to see how many actually buy the PPV. The sales pitch is it's Rousey (Olympic judo medalist) vs Sara McMann (Olympic wrestling medalist). Problem for UFC long term is that they'll probably end up with more McMann's and fewer Rousey's. Rousey is a pretty hot chick who also can fight. McMann is what most of the female fighters look like -- a man. McMann is built like a shredded muscular dude, whereas Rousey is built like a woman. Rousey has already filmed several movies -- next Expendables and Fast and Furious movies -- and is filming several more after this. Cause she's hot. Nobody is ever gonna put McMann in a movie -- unless it's one of those scenes where a bodybuilder chick gets mistaken for a dude. But huge advantages in chick fighting for chicks with naturally (or unnaturally) high levels of testosterone so they can get the muscular density of a dude. Dominant fighter other than Rousey is a Brazilian chick called Cyborg who is built like a dude and been busted for steroids multiple times. Steroids and testosterone and PEDs are even more of an advantage for female athletes than males. Hard to police. And you end up with mannish, hard to market women.

80 Gina Carano only lost once -- when she got destroyed by the steroid machine Cyborg. Carano said, fuck this, I'll go make movies. But yeah, UFC wants Rouseys and Caranos -- hot chicks who can also fight. But that's not what most of the women who get into the face-punching business look like. The weight limit is 135 lbs, so huge advantage to packing as much muscle into that 135 as possible. Women naturally have higher body fat % -- huge advantage if they can figure some way to have the body composition of a man at 135, and not a woman.

Iowa, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Montana, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Indiana, KENTUCKY, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina all allow corporal punishment. === I beg to differ. Any Kentucky teacher spanking a student would find themselves in the middle of a lawsuit; and that would be after the school site based council destroyed their reputation and tossed them out the door. But if you ask them in private, most teachers will tell you they long to bring it back and doubt that order can ever return unless it does.

109 That initiative to break up California into six states. There would be a mix of red and blue. I compared the GOP/Dem split for two elections: Obamas Dem blow-out, and the near win by Cooley (R ) for A.G. In two of the proposed states, Romney would have won those states, with an additional 11 EV. (States were "Lincoln" and "Central California" In a third state, the Republican Cooley would have won, but Obama would have squeaked by by middle-low single digits. (State was "Southern California," comprising SoCal outside of L.A.). A truly purple state. It would yield about 17 EV. A fourth ("Northern California") voted for Obama, as well as the Dem in the A.G. race, but the Dem won those counties in a squeaker, making this proposed state a borderline "purple" one. In particular, with the correct demographic shift, it could easily go purple (it has liberal coastal elites and more conservative valley/mountain area). The two states of "Silicon Valley" and "West Calfironia" would be hard core Dem/Communist. Of the ten new Senators, assigning the current Cal Senators to "Silicon Valley" would yield one state that would always send Dems (L.A. dominated "West California"), two states that would likely always send GOP ("Lincoln" and "Central California"), one that would probably send GOP, but an occasional Dem ("South California"), and one that would send Dems, but where the GOP has a fighting chance ("Northern California") Map is here: http://blogs.kqed.org/lowdown/2014/02/19/six-states

It would also, IIRC, have a GOP plurality in registration (Orange, Riverside, and San Diego are GOP plurality; San Bernardino is Dem plurality, though is is close; Imperial county has so few people, it's Dem dominance is insignificant.

Well, I read the Sydner article about Ukraine linked in the sidebar and found it informative, but this pissed me off. Here's a description of one of the pro-Russian leaders:

"He was a member of the Communist Party and a Communist deputy in the Russian parliament before cofounding a far-right party called Rodina, or Motherland. In 2005 some of its deputies signed a petition to the Russian prosecutor general asking that all Jewish organizations be banned from Russia."

He was a Commie and then viola! He became a member of the "far-right?" Because leftists are never anti-Semites? The fucker is still a Commie. That terminology pisses me off beyond belief, because it allows the Commies who read the NY Review of Books to say "Tsk, tsk - he used to be on the good side and now he's a right-wing Jew-hater."

166 I've been using a medium Arkansas stone. Tell me what I've been doing wrong. Do you strop it afterwards to remove the burr? A bit of stropping compound - I use Flexcut Gold and love it - on a piece of leather or a piece of hard, close-grained wood makes the difference between a "sharpish" and a shaving-sharp blade in my experience. I usually use a couple of Japanese artificial waterstones, 800 and 1200 grit, for my tools. I want to try oilstones for my gouges and small chisels, though, as they tend to wear grooves into the waterstones.

Posted by: I'd rather be surfin at February 22, 2014 10:43 PM (4S5LF) Thankfully no. By assigning House seats by simply taking the current number (53) and assiging them according to % of the California's population in each, rounding appropriately, and then assigning the 53rd seat to the state most likely to get it we have: "Lincoln" = 1 "Northern Calfornia" = 5 "Silicon Valley" = 10 "Central California" = 6 "West California" = 16 "Southern California" = 15 "Lincoln" would be solid GOP. "Central California" and "Southern California" would have majority GOP delegations. "Northern California" would be probably 3:2 Dem:Rep. "Silicon Valley" would probably see the GOP drop to a third party behind Greens or the "Peace and Freedom" party. "West California" would have a few GOP seats, but otherwise solid Dem.

Dammit, Nip!  In what alternate universe does the groom's family pay for the wedding?  Are all her peeps in custody, or they run out of food stamps or what?  I'm old, so maybe I have not kept up with the times, but my darlin' dadster paid for two (2!!) weddings and he was just as relieved as I was when I left those bastids.  Nobody ever made 'em pay.  I can see why Mrs. Nip is having issues with this, nice tits not withstanding.

195 Evening chi. Peaches, when the wife and I got married, her family paid for most of it. I guess it's traditional for the groom's family to pay for the rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon, so my family did that. By confining the insanity to the state of "Silicon Valley," the rest of the state would become much more conservative (even L.A., which is saying something). You'd have new states that were friendly to the sane and the conservative. I could easily see "Southern California" gaining a lot of population due to is moderate to conservative (or at least libertarian-conservative) leanings plus the established infrastructure. The state of "Northern California" could even be converted to a relatively conservative area if there is enough of an influx (it would contain Napa county and Sonoma county, but be balanced by Placer county and the other mountain/valley counties inland. The bulk of the farmland, and control of much of the water, would be in the hands of GOP friendly "Central California" and would likely become a beacon for any and all farmers once again. Heck, even "West California" would see a significant slowing of its Left-ward drift due to not being a border state anymore, as well as being free from San Fransisco.

kbdabear: my hunch is that public police forces are an idea whose time has already more or less passed, especially with the government (money) crises of late that we're only more and more likely to see continue and spiral larger. You'd be surprised how many people I've been hearing from lately, *across* the political spectrum, who believe that self-defense is probably the wave of the future if you want to protect yourself, your home and your family.

Now of course, some will choose guns and some won't. So it'll be interesting to see who does best in the long run. And then some will have guns or other techniques... and screw them up, which will also be interesting to see.

253 Any one of us would be facing 6 counts of involuntary but we're not specially privileged public employees How do you figure that? The other car ran a red light and stopped in the middle of the intersection. If some other car does that and I smoke them, I seriously doubt I would face criminal charges.

the commified ones.

Posted by: rickl at February 22, 2014 10:59

Oh, yeah.  I used to work for the gummint.  People of the FSA would come in and ask which state paid the highest benefits.  Told it was California, they'd move there.  Commiefornia is a FSA magnet.  God help them if their TP runs out.

271 http://tinyurl.com/oo9tjel Al Gore brings climate change message to Kansas City He really has become a caricature of himself. What is interesting here is that he mentions Vatican City as trying to become the first carbon neutral city state. Vatican City has no industry so the only "Carbon producing" footprint is keeping the lights on. Do they count people breathing? Point being, if Vatican City cannot become "carbon neutral" then no where can be. He also mentioned the dust bowl. I thought the dust bowl was brought on yes, by droughts, but also by the lack of erosion controls. When you turn an area of land that is flat and was historically covered by grass (the great plains) and instead make farms with nothing to keep the soil from blowing away if it gets too dry, then you get the dustbowl. Am I missing something?

304 So a couple of thoughts about the Six Californias concept:

-- It actually might work out for the best for the GOP on a national level. Especially with regard to electoral college votes.

-- Get ready for Nancy Pelosi as a Senator. (Groan.) Her San Francisco district is in the proposed new state of Silicon Valley. But, hey, she awarded herself huge new downtown SF offices in 2006 after becoming Speaker of the House, and she never relinquished them after losing the gavel in 2010, and the useless prat Boehner never took them away from her, so she has room to grow locally.

-- Speaking of SF, there will be much shitting of bricks in the SF power structure at the thought of the Six Californias. Why? Because ever so preeningly green San Francisco ruthlessly flooded "the second Yosemite" in the Hetch Hetchy valley of the Sierras (which would be across a state line in "Central California") to get its drinking water and its cheap hydropower.

Sort of like my paternal grandfather - he said that in the RFC in WWI he only ferried aircraft from Britain to France, but as my brother's friend said when he saw a picture 'if he was only doing that, why is he wearing a major's pips?'

Was too young to actually ask any questions - though grandpa did like the model S.E.5 I gave him one Christmas.  (poorly painted as it was-I was 12).

313 "10 new senators. how are you gonna decide the boudaries?"

My understanding is that the initiative stipulates them. Using existing county lines as references. It will not be left up to the state pols to impose their preferences. (If it did there would be no way in hell I would endorse it.)

Note that there are things which will be hotly controversial. For example, if I have this right, the plan intends that the GOP stronghold in Orange County gets split off from the greater Los Angeles sprawloplex in which it is submerged.

That doesn't make much sense in terms of managing the affairs of the sprawloplex, but it does prevent those conservative votes from being diluted into meaninglessness by the larger liberal strongholds further north in L.A. County.

Posted by: torquewrench at February 22, 2014 07:55 PM (gqT4g)

314 There was a definite pecking order in the camps.

1. The Japanese officers would swagger and beat their subordinates in the name of discipline.  Plus work off their fury of being stuck guarding such men as those Westerners who did not have the decency to kill themselves and instead surrendered.

2. The NCOs would abuse the soldiers.

3. All of them would abuse the Korean guards.

4. Then all of the above would abuse the prisoners.

One of the cute little lethal lies the Japanese told the likes of the British and Commonwealth POWs was, "Yes we will adhere to the Geneva Conventions.  If they do not conflict with Imperial Japanese Army policy."

Naturally everything in the Geneva Conventions violated policy.

People laugh at jaywalking since it's such a minor thing, but people get killed doing it and it's their own damn fault but it's the driver who has to pay most of the time. This chick was being flagged down by a cop in front of her, that she claimed not to see, yelled at by another that she claimed not to hear, before she was grabbed on her arm. Then instead of unplugging her earbuds and acting reasonable she made a huge scene cursing, yelling, throwing the f-word, etc. the video clip being shown isn't the whole story. She wasn't thrown to the ground, she sat down on her own after being cuffed. The guy who made it even admits she didn't handle the situation well, neither did the cops. Both sides made bad choices and it has been blown out of context. Bottom line is if she hadn't been jaywalking right in front of several cops, ie breaking the law, none of this would have happened. Another thing that is obvious is that this girl is no genius, anyone who wanders around with earbuds in and is totally unaware of their surrounds is a victim waiting to happen.

Why most were told to surrender to the IJN.  The Army was Bushido with Prussia as the modern inspiration.  The Navy was Bushido with Britain as the modern inspiration.  Hence, the IJN was (barely) civilized but answered to another code.

Best bet out of 'this sucks' and 'this sucks more'.

329 Yeah the Chinese got seriously abused by the Japanese.

Over 300,000 Chinese civilians murdered by the rampaging Japanese in less than six months at Nanking.  Hirohito was briefed on the atrocity by a member of the Imperial family who was there.

In retaliation for aiding the Doolittle Raiders to escape, some 250,000 Chinese civilians were murdered.

Plus the day to day bombing, looting, and killing.

And finally those who were killed as part of Japanese biological warfare experiments.

Eighty percent of the guys he flew with were dead by the end of the Battle of Midway and half of the POWs did not make it. The crews of two Devastators he ditched with early in 1942 all somehow survived the war.

339 Loss of USS Edsall on the Java Sea.  Sunk by IJN cruisers, the only mortal remains of her crew ever found were five decapitated skeletons.

After Midway the Japanese executed and dumped overboard a Dauntless pilot they had captured.

Then there is a special place in Hell mention for the IJN DD Akikaze.  She was dispatched in 1943 to remove from New Guinea a bunch of German civilians.  The Japs thought the Germans were helping the Allies.  After a second stop to pick up other civilians.  While still at sea Akikaze was ordered to execute her prisoners.  So all the adults were individually hung on the fantail and shot while three children were merely thrown overboard.

I don't condone the brutality of the Soviets under any circumstances, but in 1945, I rather doubt you would have been able to find many Americans who would have felt terribly sorry for Berliners, or Germans in generally, no matter how roughly the Soviets treated them. Especially Americans who had lost sons on the D-day beaches.

But the Soviets raped and pillaged, not only the Germans, but the countries, like Poland and Czechoslovakia, that they "liberated."

I have thought that the reason Nazisim seems much more horrific than Communism did and does to many Americans is because while American GI's liberated camps like Buchenwald and saw the Nazi's handiwork in such places, they never liberated a gulag - nor were they present when the Soviets rolled into Warsaw and Prague. The reason Communism still appeals to fools in 2014 is because we haven't seen any footage of Commies murdering kulaks or raping women or executing enemies of the State. The Nazis filmed their crimes and so did the Allies.

There's that, to be sure.

There's also the fact that the Communists had an extremely active fifth column in the USA in academia, government, labor, the news media and Hollyweird. Who all worked very diligently to suppress American understanding of what Communism actually did to innocent people.

Whereas the Nazis had scattered individual sympathizers in all of those places, but nothing like the large and well synchronized organizations which the Communists had built to serve their ends.

400 Soviet troops in WWII came in three waves:  The first were combat troops, mostly ethnic Russians, who did not rape or steal.  The second wave was mostly non-Russians ( Poles and Lithuanians and other Baltic and other Slavic ) REMFs who stole everything but did not rape.  The third wave were Soviet troops who raped pretty much every female over ten.

402 You guys that have Showtime have to watch Shameless tomorrow at 7 pm. It is a rerun of last weekÂ’s episode. I cannot believe what one character said about TFG & it is still on. The man is a neighbor & his wife is pregnant with triplets. I wonÂ’t even write what he said about TFG for fear of the Ban Hammer. ItÂ’s a funny show. The character is Kevin & he is talking about what their triplets are going to be when she has them & they grow up. IÂ’m sure Shameless is on TFGÂ’s enemy list!

Posted by: torquewrench at February 23, 2014 12:43 AM (gqT4g) You're right. The thing is, I think those asshole academics, intellectuals and government stooges might- just might- have been been shamed back in the late '40's and early '50's if they had been shown newsreels of the mountains of bodies Stalin produced, the starving kulaks, the children who were shot in Kiev. If that had been captured on film, and people saw it, anti-Communists would have been able to say "Look, do you support this? This is what Communism is." Nazism is on film. Communism, to a large extent, is not.

We don't have footage of people being killed in Cuba or North Korea or Maoist China or Cambodia either. We have the estimates, the numbers, but saying Communism killed 100 million in the 20th century doesn't seem to resonate the heads of people - it's too abstract. Showing one - just one video - of a guy getting tortured to death by Stalin's goons or one pile of bodies (out of millions) starved by Stalin - might have taken the "glamour" out of Communism.

As it is, people haven't seen the horror, they can't imagine it, and so they think that "next time, we'll make it work."

I mean really - first response is good - coincidental response is just inconvenient and scary.

427 Today would be my motherÂ’s 87th birthday. My older brother & I were talking about it one day this week. I told him one of our neighbors called to ask me about my brother Paul & asked if she could call him. I gave her his phone number & told her not to ask about things & to let him bring them up or he gets pissed. Our neighbor is in her 70s and her Aunt is 90 & in a nursing home. She told me every time she hears the phone ring she thinks the worse. There are times when you have to let them go. Both of us were relived when our mother passed. She had AlzheimerÂ’s & had been in a nursing home from July 2005 to July 2011 & many things went wrong although I yelled & screamed at them but there was one nurse that was an imbecile & unprofessional at that. If I saw her now 8 years later I would mange to deck that fat idiot weak hands or not. My mother knew us both before she went and for that we are grateful, because it would have been very hard to go see her, I got her out of the hell hole & into a great one, if she had no clue who we were. I have regrets that I didnÂ’t choke that frigging nurse, but other than that I have none.

440

Carol: In 1989, my dad had a stroke. I flew back from DC to be with him - he died 2 weeks later.

This is what gets me to this day . His doctor came in his room when the family was there and talked about him like he was already dead. My sister followed the doctor out of the room to complain about that and the doctor said, "Oh, he's in a coma. He can't hear a thing."

Oh really? A day or so after that, my sister brought her infant son in to visit him. My supposedly unconcious father opened his eyes, looked at his grandson, and said "I love you."

I was in his room the following day. The Tianamen Square Massacre was going on. Again, my father opened his eyes, looked at the TV and the man standing in front of the tank and said, "That's terrible." That was the last thing he said.

I wanted to slap that idiot doctor the next time I saw him and say, "Don't ever think that the patient you're talking about doesn't hear you or understand you."

The good thing, I guess, is when we told my dad we loved him, we knew he heard us.

441 *static* One thing before I go. I've played Dead Space, Dead Space 2 and 3 over the past month. (XBox 360). The original and the second one were good. I'd call the first one "quality". The second one was "good". The price matters. Had I paid Sixty Bucks for any of these titles? I'd be PISSED. At fifteen bucks, tops for any of these titles? I'd buy them and be minimally spooked throughout. -They changed the Weapon-Upgrade System in DS3. I didn't even care about it until halfway through the game. I didn't want to "learn about it". I didn't really want to deal with it. I don't understand why they do that shit. Upgrade your Suit. You only need to deal with "Real Weapons Creations" when you get your Blast-Shield near the end. Other than that, you just add Hit Points and Reload/Damage/Clip Size/ other minor upgrades throughout the game. Why would they do that, when they essentially had the same minor upgrade system, more simply, throughout the first two games? Stupid. I've played all three games on one-notch above "Normal". They call it different things, but it is hard. I can't even imagine playing these games "Two notches" above the "Normal" setting. When you finish the game, you "unlock" the "Insane" setting. That's fucking ridiculous. I've told The Dude that I'd play "Vanquish" over the last Summer. I decided to finish off all my RPG's, (Skyrim, Fable III, Dragon Age I and II, Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning), and then start "shooters" like "Vanquish" afterwards. I'm ready, now. After playing three "shooters", I'm ready to start "Vanquish". (Japanese Mech-Shooter). Again, as a geek, I'm missing some Dungeons and Dragons at times. *fixed *w* aforementioned RPG's* On this site, I miss Baseball Stat-Geeks. There are none to be found. I'll be "Out To Lunch" often, seeing as I'll be looking at baseball stats before my Fantasy Baseball Draft. After I get a new printer, (I HATE PRINTERS), I'll be crunching numbers like most people crunch deep-fried chicken. Nobody will really care that I'm "Out To Lunch". Someone may ask, however. You can tell them that I'm "Doing That Baseball Thing". I wouldn't have been here tonight, except that the printer didn't work. I couldn't print out my projections. ...okay. I Do Not Collect Unemployment. I live off what I've made over sixteen years of self-employment. I Haz Gamez. ...and when I win my Own Fantasy League? I'll have garnered another Hundred-Fifty Bucks! ...eh. I'll probably finish third. See You When I Can... -Your Friendly Neighborhood Slapweasel

In point of fact, I have never had a serious relationship with a woman who was younger than myself....which probably stems from the fact that I skipped 2nd grade [NEVER learned intermediate fingerpainting, to my shame!] and was tracked with classmates 1-1/2 years older than I was throughout my academic years. Wow.  I don't know what to say.

Here is mine.  I was 22 and my paternal grandfather was dying.  He was transferred from the home in Ann Arbor to one in Dearborn Heights.  Dad and mom were up north so I was asked to go see grandpa and check up.  I did.

It was the end.  He thought I was dad and called me 'Freddy' (which I am obviously not - that is dad) and I did not disabuse him of that.  I just stayed there and then went home to wait for dad to get back.  When he and mom did I told him what happened and he went over.

The phone rang about 2:00 am.  Though I was then a very sound sleeper I got up and went to my parent's room.  That journey had ended - but what a journey; farm kid in Canada, pilot in the Great War, dental school, then respected professional, seeing two kids through college, married for over 60 years.

The quest is what counts, the voyage; not dropping the last anchor.

469 Donna V. My father passed away in November 1988 from a combination of things. We called 911 on a Sunday night & they took him to closest hospital here, rather than the VA in Jamaica Plain which he loved. He was in WWII on beaches of Normandy. I had day off scheduled with plans the next day & called my friend & said I donÂ’t have good feeling. I picked my mother up at train station, she never worked until he retired, they got on each otherÂ’s nerves all day, & we went to the hospital. I was my fatherÂ’s favorite being the only girl & he started screaming at me & did not know me & called me every swear word there was & told me I had hurt him. I went to nurse & asked to speak to doctor & told him that is not my Father. Dr. had no experience with him & thought that was his usual state. I told him it was NOT & he had been fine, except for breathing issues night before. My father had experience several strokes & it screwed up his memory. A few days later he went into a coma. My mother would talk & talk & talk to him & I would ask her why. She told me she knew he could hear here. He woke up twice once wanting a corned beef sandwich. He passed and we did not get to ask if he had heard my mother. When he didnÂ’t know me I knew then he was dying.

I've been purposely avoiding it, because I figured it would be.

That other one...'Olympus Has Fallen'...with Gerard Butler, is actually pretty good, though.

Slapweasel: I'm a Brewers fan. I also love the Cubs because the Cubs stand between the Brewers and the NL Central cellar.

*Sigh* I'm doomed to as much heartache as a Cubs fan, because I might join the angels (and I don't mean the AL West franchise) before the Brew Crew ever plays in another WS.

2011 was the last good year (thanks to Braun's little steroid gummie bears - which we didn't know about at the time- and Fielder and Greinke. Man, those home games were fun that season.)

I don't have huge ambitions for the upcoming season. My team is my team, though. And I love being at a ball park or listening to Uecker on the radio no matter what.

Very funny.

OK, a little bit of backstory -- I got a mini-mill from Harbor Freight, and it comes in a wooden crate packed in icky red grease (rumored to be rendered from Chinese political prisoners, but.....). I got it more than a year ago, and several months after I had completed a project to relocate my water heater to the garage. The building code says that WH must be on a two-foot-high platform -- which is a couple of hundred pounds of water suspended two feet in the air in earthquake territory. Being inquisitive, I asked about the platform thing and was told "that's in case there are combustible hydrocarbon vapors, like gasoline....they tend to pool on the floor and explode when they hit the WH's pilot light. We know about the risks of multiple hundred pounds of water suspended in air in earthquake zones, but that's worse."

Anyway, I finally, FINALLY, unpack the mini-mill. I'd gathered from knowledgeable others that the fastest way to clean prisoner "Ching, treason, X98237845" off the ways was to use a fresh kitchen scrub-sponge and a toothbrush and a small pail of kerosene. I set to cleaning and got the column into satisfactory shape, but had to disassemble the table to continue -- and then it started getting dark. So I put everything away at about 5:15.

About 7:00, I decided to head to the garage fridge and grab a couple of cold beers.....so I pop out the door (next to the water heater) and The Entire Garage Reeks Like It's Been Soaked In Kerosene. Naturally, I freaked out.

I headed back to put my pants on, opened the big garage door, took the sponge, brush, pail, shop towels, and such outside....then I closed the thing up and checked after a few minutes.....then I vented it again.

After a while, I got to where I could go to sleep with some faith I wouldn't wake to a major fire, so I did.

Carol, my dad's first stroke was a month after my mom died in '85. He had 3 and the last one was the fatal one. I didn't live here at the time, but my siblings did and told me he screamed at them and said hurtful and inappropriate things. (He once, out of the blue, started talking about his sex life with my mom - with my kid brother. That's the very last thing my brother wanted to hear about! My brother said it's like he didn't know he was talking to his son.)

Roland Emmerich can't help but stick his little fantasies into his presidents.  His Clinton stand in is really a war hero that inspires great leadership against aliens.  His Bush stand in is a bumbling idiot that doesn't know what to do when a superstorm threatens the country.   And his Obama stand in is some wise-cracking street smart guy that can defend himself.

At least Michael Bay's presidential views are fairly accurate characterizations of who they are.  In Transformers the Bush administration is a bit jumpy and war hyped mobilizing and preparing to attack.  In the next two movies, the Obama Administration connections are all a bunch of gutless cowardly pussies seeking to appease Megatron.

The Problem.  The stuff that makes the networks money is the old corny stuff that is good for sitting back and unwinding before having to rewind.  That is irritating to those who know better.  And the internal war between the accountants and the creative geniuses goes on - 'why don't they appreciate teh drama of the tension created when the ex-wife goes to work and finds herself in the same department as her ex-husband?'

'Because too many viewers know that show called "My Actual Life Right Now" and want to be diverted for a bit before they go to bed.  Any other jackass questions?  No?  So let's get distilling the latest in supermarket fiction into a two-maybe three-year series.'

When Boyington was awarded his, he was one of three that Truman awarded at that ceremony but WWII just ended and there were quite a few that needed to be awarded.  Forward to Tibor 'Ted' Rubin, who in 2005 under the same guidelines, was finally awarded the MOH for his actions as part of the 8th Cav in Korea and later as a POW.  It was only Ted who was presented the medal by President Bush.

496 My mother was in the ICU for more than two weeks. Kept getting better, then worse then better...beat one thing after another, but the exertion of doing so just ground her down until her body couldn't go on anymore. She feared death, always did. She wouldn't go when she heard her dead ex-husband encouraging her that "it wasn't so bad." (However, she also saw her daughter-in-law in the room snogging my husband; considering tha she was across the country and he absolutely loathes her, the ex-husband might have been hallucination, too.) At the end she was on a respirator, couldn't say a thing. But we still had one last communication: her hand slowly forming into the OK symbol. I like to think that meant she was finally at peace with the necessity of moving on.

He's so damn funny. He likes to tell stories about when he was a Card and one of the worst catchers in the MLB. When the Cards were in the WS in the early '60's he came down with the flu and never played in the Series. He is sure the team doctor injected him with something to keep him out of the Series.

He also has Bob Gibson stories. He says that Gibson could be friendly on the days he didn't pitch, but on the days he did, watch out! "He hated everybody. He hated his teammates. He hated his family. On the days he pitched, he hated you if you looked at him."

All of us evil overlords in training learned that risking exploding is what minions are for.  Henchmen (and women - but don't let them get out of your sight when pesky heroes are around) are to conduct diversionary strikes so that you can bring that pesky hero into your Lair of Doom.

My brother insisted I take her over to Best Buy today to show her tablets. She has already seen the two I have and couldn't wrap her head around why she'd want one but keeps being frustrated because she cannot make sense of a browser display. She never understands, no matter how plainly labeled, what is the search for stuff in general, what is search for the site in particular, and where to enter addresses. (The last has been simplified by most newer browsers.)

Perhaps it would be different if she were a few decades younger but she just cannot seem to connect to how most UIs are organized. It would be nice if she could access her bank and credit card info on the web because I'm not confident she'll be able to get a human on the phone for free much longer. OTOH, it may be better if she cannot go online shopping unassisted.

But that is another topic to be debated at conference when all of you roll in with your 'unmeltable ice castles' and 'floating fortresses' to your credits and you go all silent when that 'pesky hero' who sank your 200,000 tons of titanium armored 'liner of control and tropical drinks' gets mentioned.

There is a layer of gritty dust and little chunks of wood and drywall on EVERYTHING. Even inside drawers and cabinets. Insurance guy is coming by Tuesday morning to assess the situation. It could be a few weeks still before we have a really usable kitchen again.

There was no problem when the work was being done.....but I think I see a small flaw in your plan. Your mill should now be kept away from humidity and standing water. You need to keep the ways lightly coated with way oil, at least every 3 days, although everyday is much better. Way oil, or synthetic non-detergent motor oil is tough to light ... but it is a petroleum product. Making covers for them seems ... might be a new fire hazard, unless you make something out of metal. I have no knowledge in this area. Perhaps aluminum foil to cover the ways after oiling might work.

Preventing rust really is a good choice.

I'm all for good practices....but this will never be a commercial mill under heavy use where best practices apply. If there's a source for non-detergent synthetic oil that's within a reasonable margin of cost from Mobil1, I'm all ears.....but I've been seeing a lot of "this is really the right stuff to use, but is 10x the cost".

A clear plastic bag of say 4-6 mill will also help if the equipment is in an area where moisture can splash or in high humidity.

Just don't seal off the bottom so it can breathe.

I've used that with machines that only saw duty every 6 months or so. If the surface becomes dry/dusty looking, that's when you'll start getting oxidation.

Most machinery has passivated/coated surfaces for just that reason.

While the results have often left much to be desired, it can't take away from the fact that tyrants the world over are getting thrown down from their lofty perches and into prison cells where they belong. And hey, if the US does become the Evil Empire, more freedom elsewhere just means more places to run to when it turns.

559 http://tinyurl.com/krbjkbw Planned food safety rules rile organic farmers I sympathize with both sides here a bit. From my experience with trying to make an "Organic" product (even the name is just hilarious) it essentially says: "Everything we have learned about farming over the last 4000 years? Yeah, we want to throw that out." The farmers who are talking about the new rules making it difficult though, I also sympathize with. As someone who has worked in the testing industry, these regs do seem odd. They are enforcing procedures instead of requiring testing (at least from what I am seeing here.) Why not do pathogen testing on the compost, or on the produce itself? I worked in a lab once that did pathogen testing on compost and feeds for farmers before they were fed to livestock. Just seems a bit regulation happy. Which I guess fits the pattern with this administration.
