Overnight Open Thread (24 Jan 2014)
— CDR M

Well, with the State of the Union coming next week and all this talk of income inequality that'll come with it, I found this article to be a good primer. The three types of "Income Inequality" religious extremists.

Soooo, it's not OK to use plastic bags at the grocery store, but it's just fine to require folks like bartenders to wear single use rubber gloves when handling food or in contact with food handling surfaces. I guess washing hands wasn't good enough so landfills will see a large increase in rubber gloves instead. Genius move from the so-called save the planet crowd.

Bad Lip Reading

NFL style.

Battleship Gun On A Tank

Dayum. That's a big ass gun. Meet the 2B1 Oka tank.

This behemoth's barrel was 20 meters in length, meaning that it was 47.6 calibers long (i.e. the length of the barrel divided by the bore diameter; this is similar to the main battery of the Iowa class battleships, which had 16" guns with 50 caliber barrels). It fired a projectile weighing 750kg (1,650 pounds) over a distance of up to 45 kilometers (just over 28 miles).

Passwords

Top 25 passwords in 2013. Well "monkey" has dropped out of the top 10. What are the odds that some password related to Obamacare makes the list this year?

Two billionaires are having a very public fight over a multi level marketing company that the two have positions in; one has a short position, the other is long.  The long position has done very well over the past couple of months and the guy with the short position has lost half a billion dollars minimum.  Today, a congressman asked for an investigation of the company and the stock tanked 10 percent.

69 OK, here's a question for the horde. I was looking at buying a surround sound hookup for the living room. The one I saw had a central unit with bluray, a subwoofer, a center channel speaker and 4 smallish square speakers. 2 obviously would go towards the back of the room for the surround sound, are speakers that size generally robust enough for the other 2 to function as main speakers on either side of the TV? Also, the output from the bluray is obviously HDMI, but my TV just barely predates HDMI; it has high def, but uses the three plug system. Does anyone know if there is an HDMI to 3 plug adapter available?

The one I saw had a central unit with bluray, a subwoofer, a center channel speaker and 4 smallish square speakers. 2 obviously would go towards the back of the room for the surround sound, are speakers that size generally robust enough for the other 2 to function as main speakers on either side of the TV? Also, the output from the bluray is obviously HDMI, but my TV just barely predates HDMI; it has high def, but uses the three plug system. Does anyone know if there is an HDMI to 3 plug adapter available?

Posted by: Weirddave at January 24, 2014 10:18 PM

Before he retired from blogging, Kim Du Toit had a basic list of arms that he believed every household should have. If memory serves, it's as follows.

A proper fighting handgun chambered in a proper fighting cartridge for every adult (auto or revolver, didn't matter)

A proper fighting rifle for every adult

Minimum of one .22 rifle per household

Minimum of one 20 or 12 gauge shotgun per household

Minimum of one full power .30 cal class rifle per household

As he saw it, you needed to fulfill these basic requirements before branching out into duplicates or more specialized firearms, because this basic arsenal would handle 99.9% of the shooting jobs a properly armed household would need to accomplish.

That's from memory, so take it with a grain of salt. But it makes lot of sense.

I just saw a bunch on Amazon. All one- and two-star rated.

If your surround sound receiver has HDMI inputs and component (red-green-blue) outputs, and your "three-plug system" is RGB, try routing everything to the receiver and output to the TV. If your "three plug system" is red-white-yellow, buy a new TV.

(Which pains me, 'cause I loves me anything Ruger). Half the price, and comes stock with all that "scary black rifle" siht; looks like an AR right out of the box. As far as 5.56 or .223 goes; consider something chambered for 7.62 x 39 (AK or SKS). The ammo is a lot less expensive than 5.56 or .223 (20 rounds for $5.17 at the local Walmart, as opposed to three times that for 5.56 or .223). I paid $89 for my NIB SKS 25 years ago. 1. Unless its hunting season, don't wear camo or drive a camouflaged vehicle.
2. Never agree to appear on any TV show about the end of the world and being prepared.

226 Soviet T-34 was about the best main battle tank in WWII and at the height of the war the Soviets were producing more than 2000 a month. It was primitive but effective. They used to issue a sledge hammer so the driver could shift gears. The Tiger and the Panther were better, but were so complex it couldn't be mass produced in number and it made them difficult to service in the field. The Sherman (aka Ronson or Zippo) was effective only because the US produced so damn many of them. T-72 was a pretty decent tank in its time. But right now the winner and all time Champ is the M1A1 Abrams.

Also, you need 3 rifles, one in 22 (I recommend a Marlin 795; you have less options to modify it, but then again the Marlin doesn't need any modifications. The Ruger 10/22 sucks right out of the box, and for twice the money), one bolt action in a hunting caliber (7mm has been available all through the ammo crisis...just sayin'), and one Evil Black Rifle (AR or AK variant) in either .223/5.56 or .308/7.62 NATO.

And a Mosin. Everybody needs a Mosin. (TR, got your email, shame that they only ship to FFL's)

A safe only slows down crooks and most folks don't keep them locked. I don't, too much trouble. That said, if you have a lot of expense shit, hiding is your best defense. If they can not find it they can not steal it. My shit is behind a false door that is always alarmed.

I had to leave off the barrel bands and top cover and then file away on it, but it was worth it. I bought a $30 scope from Dick's (when I still shopped there) and it is a golf ball killer all day at 100 yards.

-------------------

Well, a safe is the best choice. I can't afford one, and I have no place to put it anyway, so I got a couple of Stack-On steel cabinets and tucked them on either end of a closet. The lock won't stop a thief with a screwdriver, just slow him down for ten seconds, so I installed "cleats" ( I can't remember the real term) on the sides to which I attached heavy chains along the top and bottom, secured with padlocks. It won't stop a determined thief with boltcutters, but it will foil a casual meth-head or punk kid.

287 "Or is a (cheaper) locking steel cabinet a better choice? " Not saying that I have a reliable opinion on the matter, but you need to consider why you want to lock them up. Is it to keep firearms out of the hands of the casual visitor to your garage (kids, family, etc) or is it to prevent loss through theft, or is it to protect the firearms against the elements etc? A locking steel cabinet doesn't scream "firearms inside" to a burglar, but then if they have the fancy to look inside anyway it's probably easier than a proper gun safe.

331 314 I snuck out of work for an hour today to hit the range. I knew they had one I could rent. I put 50rds through it. It stove piped 6 or 7 times and the slide failed to lock open once. If you want to pipe in an HD signal, you need to use the CATV round jack, or have a proper RGB or HDMI port.

I didn't realize they made the LC380, I was thinking of the LCP. I'm not sure why someone would chose the LC380 over the LC9. Ammo in .380 is generally more expensive than 9mm and less widely available. With the guns being the same size, I don't see the appeal of the LC380. The LCP is smaller and maybe easier to pack.

(He was a paraplegic and it was the only thing that kept the leg tremors under control) Medical marijuana is not a fun high. It's designed to drug you, and most target pain relief. It's really not enjoyable. They have been working on specific strains to target certain diseases. It's high tech stuff to grow too. I'm not saying that there won't be "wacky weed" varieties, as the market takes off. Just saying that you wouldn't find most of this stuff fun.

I'm in late, so it may have already been said, but I'd throw the Remington 770 on there for consideration as well.  Downside is they're still "unproven."  They are, however, affordable, and come bore-sighted from the factory.

Posted by: Kristophr at January 24, 2014 11:50 PM

In a sense, yes. Different situation and geography, though. The maoris were, by comparison, extremely organized, disciplined and warlike. The aborigines were were nomads and had much more room to move in. A lot of mythic bullshit has been propagated over time about them. As vicious as the maoris could be, they were a more ... reliable to deal with. The aborigines, on the other hand could turn from placid, to just as vicious as the maoris at any time and wipe you out, if they felt like it. Particularly if they noted any weakness, numbers wise or weapons wise. Hell, they fought and wiped each other out constantly. Maoris were at least predictable and reasonable, by comparison. Aborigines would bide their time, any kind of brokered "peace" meant nothing, when an opportunity presented itself. Then you got speared.

The maoris by a country mile, no question. They were tough mofos. But, it was their organization and soldier structure that made them easier to deal with. The aborigines had little consideration about consequences, they didn't think about "tomorrow", that kind of mindset is very dangerous. 505 "No, some whore patented a working microstamp system. It can be defeated with a screwdriver blade, but since it was demonstrated, it is "viable" in the opinion of the Cali AG." That guy's a fucker. You can decide if I mean the AG or the patentor. I'd like to see CA pass a law requiring a guncam on pistols and tasers (and similar devices) used by police. So we get video + audio of 30 seconds or whatever prior to shooting plus some time afterwards. That's actually probably a viable technology which could save lives, or at least hold people accountable for their actions.

This is how we win: by being tough, by *not caring* if they (especially in the MSM) like us or not, by utilizing our media and media savvy 100%, by screaming just as loud as they do, and by being every bit as cunning and ruthless as they are.

What's weird: in the past few months, I personally have stopped being nice and have been really rough on libs at FB who've personally offended me. I *know* it doesn't always work out this way... but in my own experience, I've found at least a few of them seem to respect me and my views more now.

Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy at January 25, 2014 12:29 AM (nl+Cz)

To be absolutely clear, they should use the Senate's current corrupt rules to undo all the Progressive bullshit back to about 1912 -- when the original 1890 "purify the government" movement (initiative, referendum, and recall were enacted in California in 1911) turned to utopian demagoguery (17th Amendment was ratified in 1913, making Senators popularly elected). By 1919, the movement was malignant enough to usher in Prohibition.

OK, so you spelled "Califuckya" wrong, and you can't use paper grocery bags either -- they have to be woven from some meat-dripping retaining substance in order to grow your quota of food-poisoning microorganisms.

But that doesn't begin to touch upon the rest of the "Kneel Before Zod" government we have here. I had my car repainted a couple of years back -- the guy had three paint systems in the last five years, because the air pollution freaks kept changing their minds. You can't buy paint thinner, though you can buy paint that needs it. Gas costs more than anywhere else in the country, because there are California-only blends that nobody else makes.....speaking of which, my first car (1979) was a piece-of-shit largely because Ford had to borrow an engine for it that had already been discontinued in the other 49 states in order to get California certified. In addition, if you get a $20 parking ticket or a $50 speeding ticket, it'll be well over $200 when they tack all the surcharges and court fees on top.

Go to Tennessee (greenest state in the Land of the Free).  Good business climate, four seasons, no state income tax, good gun laws.

Stay out of Memphis, it's a lost cause.  Chattanooga and the Gatlinburg area also have an abundance of liberals, but they haven't been Detroited like Memphis.  Plenty of libs in Nashville, but it's still primarily conservative.

If you can stand being a little ways out from the city, look to the south or east of Nashville.

Knoxville's a pretty good area.

As far as the state's geography (not knowing the route you took), the western portion (where I'm originally from) is the northerly part of the Mississippi Delta; as you go east it gets continuously more hilly until you hit the Cumberland Plateau, between Nashville and Knoxville.  After that, you're in the Smokies.

762 MWNP - I hate to baseline on the COMBLOC stuff.  The new stuff is so much better then the old crap, it makes it difficult to use a couple of round to buy bread - unless the baker has specialized knowledge.  Scarcity and utility, as well as a relatively restricted base for manufacture are important too.  Your straight walled reloadable cases would have intrinsic value beyond their utility as a common medium of exchange in an environment with no controlling legal authority.

764 http://tinyurl.com/n5mc8as The first Reagan-Mondale debate. It is interesting when you go back and see memebers of the press hitting Reagan on "High projected" deficits of over $200 Billion dollars by 1989! The horror. One of the things I was looking for was that it seemed from my memory that Reagan always had a fairly good command of detail of his plans and the conditions on the ground. These days it seems like everyone speaks in terms of happy marzipan generalities. The sad thing is Reagan was right, if you have low government tax/spending and the economy picks up (see the 90's or Wisconsin) the budget mysteriously balances out. Voodoo economics indeed. Anyway I thought it was interesting.

Posted by: Country Singer at January 25, 2014 02:18 AM (CWquH)

Again, just an impression from driving around -- you can really feel the Cumberland Plateau. You get up on there, and there you are....and it's big -- then you come down off of it and....it's not really hilly. And you get to Nashville, and there are these lakes (J Percy Priest and Hickory? -- I'm going off of muddled late-night recollections), and you're really feeling flat. Down by Chattanooga (we've driven from aunt's place in Knoxville to fish convention in Atlanta) you get some hills.

The thing about hills, is that it can be hot and humid -- but you don't get flooding, you don't get mosquitoes, you don't get structures that rot. And when there's cold, there's microclimates, where you get basins of serious sonofabitch nasty cold, with merely chilly inclines above.

You're misreading the demographics. The whole Dem/Progressive dynamic is based on capturing 51% of a state based on the urban population, then asserting that a mandate for 100% of the state in the Federal arena, even as 49% of the state hates your guts and resents your attitude. Look at http://tinyurl.com/bq9avfb then look at it again.

I am not misreading it.  I am paying due respect to the insidiousness of it.   When the opposite happens --- when a conservative influx turns a leftist state the other way -- I will lose a little certainty about it, but not before.

Come to think of it -- let's make it easier than that -- when a conservative influx changes any significant group of leftist twits in any manner I will lose a little certainty, but not before.

805 Looks pretty empty. Damn my need for sleep and other human frailties. I wanted to talk about my dismay at the number of local business closures while there was a good crowd.

The first one was annoying because it was the closest supermarket to my home by a couple miles but it had been originally planned to close ten years ago when the same chain opened a bigger store nearby which became the next closest supermarket. I guess the numbers stayed good until recently and now it going away.

But then I learned that two stores belong to a competing chain in the region, including one in my convenient range of travel, are being shut down as well. The remaining store belonging to that chain is inconveniently located in terms how much you'd go out of your way to get an advertised special. (They happened to have an excellent price on boneless chicken breasts this week.)

This is now a somewhat disturbing trend for me. Some might say the market has become more diverse with the entry of Whole Foods and Sprouts recently but both of those places are prices and generally give me the creeps in terms of the smug clouds they generate.

825 That's a pretty dumb self propelled design. Sure, a 1,650 pound round is going to come in useful in some situations, but you can tell just by looking at the beast that the chassis will be destroyed by that gun. 8" is about as large a gun as you can reliably transport and fire, and an 8" shell - about 210mm - is more than adequate for just about anything you plan on hitting. With today's guided munitions, etc., tube artillery is less critical than it was. It still has its place, and it's certainly cheaper than rockets, but any target worth deploying a 16" gun against is going to be receiving some form of guided missile these days.
