Overnight Open Thread (25 Apr 2014)
— CDR M

The deadly war on e-cigarettes. Can't have people actually quitting a bad habit with something that isn't supported by big pharma (makers of nicotine patches and gum) or taxed like tobacco. Because they keep jackin' up the taxes on analog cigarettes they're losing tax revenue to bootleggers. Throw in the declining number of smokers (either out right quitting or transitioning to vaping), it is little wonder the politicos are lashing out.

Many of the same people that use incorrect information about e-cigs (read the comment section in the above article) are probably the same types that see nothing wrong with this anti-gun ad.

And many more of the same group believe that the North Pole is melting away and will be ice free in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015.

Second look at being in the band? Women prefer complex composers for sexual flings.

Pay As You Earn

I know, I know, this isn't surprising but Obama's student aid scheme cost skyrockets.

Max Norris, a 29-year-old lawyer for the state of California, illustrates the potential costs of the program. He pays about $420 a month to the Education Department on his $172,000 in debt, which he says fails even to cover the interest owed. But his out-of-pocket expense falls to $100 monthly after aid from his school, University of CaliforniaÂ’s Hastings College of Law.

Mr. Norris, who makes $60,000 a year in his job, would have about $225,000 in debt forgiven after 10 years, assuming he stays in public service and his salary rises 4% annually, according to a repayment calculator created by the New America Foundation, which advocates less-generous forgiveness.

He said he learned of the programs before enrolling. “My intent the whole time in going through law school was to take advantage of this program,” he said.

11 The A-10 provides low altitude close air support to troops in contact. It can survive incredible amounts of damage. It can land on and take off again from minimally improved dirt strips, allowing it to operate close to the front lines and in remote areas around the world. Obviously it will be unneeded in either full scale conflicts or small-scale operations in remote countries with crumbling infrastructure. *spits*

12 Continued from the last thread... It has been a creeping thing. The Left, however, took advantage of the inept handling of VN to inveigle their way into all of our institutions. They are parasites, which kill the host. Posted by: Mike Hammer at April 25, 2014 09:47 PM (aDwsi) I pinpoint the major shift at the last three words of the 24th amendment. 28 "The F-35 will NOT be able to replace the A-10. Hell, it can't replace the F-22."

The F-35 was sold to retarded Congresscritters (but I repeat myself) as being as cheap as an F-16, as reliable as an F/A-18, as stealthy as an F-22, as proficient at vertical operations as the AV-8B, and as damage tolerant as the A-10.

None of these promises have eventuated. Not even close.

Biggest disaster in American military aviation history.

But what's worse is that the door got slammed on the fingers of every plausible alternative. It's a dog's breakfast, but the services will be having it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For the next 20 years.

This is what happens when militarily and technologically illiterate people get handed the keys to procurement policy. Cynical contractors roll them and go through not only their pockets, but the national wallet. Ka-ching!

31 a disenfranchisement of those on the public dole.

I'd go for that, but not necessarily the no-taxes-no-vote.  My dad paid taxes for about 50 years but now he doesn't because his income is not high enough.  Probably a lot of people in that situation.  Plus, if people get drug-tested to work, why can't they be drug-tested to get paid not to?  That's a pet peeve for me.

49 "Johnson created a vote buying scheme, and it's kept his party in power ever since."

So apparently a massive, publicly funded renovation of the LBJ Presidential Library is just now wrapping up. They've gone all in for "immersive multimedia", including spots where you can pick up lovingly recreated simulacra of 1960s vintage telephones and hear Lyndon himself speaking to the great issues of the day.

I can think of a LOT of wholly cynical and manipulative Johnson quotes that I am sure did not make the cut for inclusion.

Oh, I understand also that there's an area where you get to re-create key decisions regarding LBJ's conduct of the Vietnam War. I wonder if they'll have the man himself on the simulated telephone privately talking about the Tonkin Gulf Incident, saying "for all I know, our navy was shooting at whales out there".

107 Which part of the science poll shows that we're doomed? Most of the items that are solid are in the high 80's with the extremely confident to somewhat confident. The vaccine one is at 83% for the combined. But, the question is really a two part question. "Vaccines are effective" by itself would probably rate much higher. Safety is relative. The evolution question is misleading. Are we talking goo to you or just micro-evolution? The age questions are worthless because science is always changing and adjusting those. You can always find 10-15% of people who will always be contrary.

195 @167 - the question is how you determine 'salary'. For the most part the Ellisons and the Schmidts are getting their money from options, warrants, and other sorts of non-salary compensation. Given that few can even figure out how the average large tech firm owns the IP it generates, you can bet that any effort to tax C-level salaries based on staff compensation levels will result in similar forests of indirection.

Hockey players growing up get real shitty times to practice, so when they get out on the ice, they are ready to go. Basketball players got to pick and choose their practice times, so when the leave the locker room, they aren't ready yet. Plus, pro hockey teams will get fined if the game doesn't start on time, and that is at the NHL through ECHL levels.

SACRAMENTO -- Noting that America's middle class has lost its distinction as the wealthiest in the world, two Bay Area lawmakers say...

I am noting that news  articles that depict one side "noting" a supporting fact (I haven't investigated this claim,  but even if it's true...)  are telegraphing the  author's  preference.

Every article on any subject  could highlight one side "noting" a fact. “Noting that the administrationÂ’s claims that ‘If you  like your plan you can keep you planÂ’ were misleading,  two GOP lawmakers…”   The privileged  few, however, actually  get  that sympathetic  treatment.

This. Eleventy.

I am not very radiophobic, and I would laugh and happily live in a whole bunch of houses that have "elevated radon levels" without concern. Might even expect my health to improve.

Hormesis, motherfucker! Do you speak it?

I just would not buy any of those houses, because I eventually will have to sell.

Joe and Jane Average don't read the professional literature in epidemiology and medical physics when they make home buying decisions. What they know is OMG RADON LETHAL CANCER RUN NOW.

I wouldn't buy a house near a nuclear power plant for the same reason. Not because it frightens me, but because it would frighten others.

Or, shit, even a house under high voltage lines. No, they won't give you cancer. Yes, Joe and Jane think they might, and will not be in a hurry to buy your home if it's got buzzy wires overhead.

What would worry me? Accidentally buying a house that had been used as a meth lab. The residues from those processes surely will do you a bad turn.

Oh, also, in the SF Bay Area, if your home has bad feng shui, or has had someone die on the premises, say goodbye to superstitious Chinese buyers. Total bullshit, but it does hit your pocketbook.

He was a stray, but I suspect based on where he was found and his age and condition that he'd maybe gotten away from a vacationing family. There are a lot of lodges and cabins in teh area where people stay to ski mobile. We were looking at another cat at the shelter (really had intended to get a girl kitty) but he caught our eye. Had both in the room and the girl kitty (who was a sealpoint Siamese) went Full Metal Jacket Cougar... this boy just sat there and watched her. Didn't react. We'll do the introductions with our other pets over the weekend, but I'm not expecting problems. He was hanging out at the top of the stairway sniffing at one of our dogs from under the door. And there were dogs at the shelter and free time with other cats -- he was fine with both.

I used to live where the local feeder was the same as for the police station.

Multiple redundancy. Lights never went out even in the worst storms, when the rest of town was totally blacked out. Pretty sweet arrangement.

Now I have to lug a generator out and get it started. Fussing in the dark with a headlamp. Making electrical connections. Meh.

I bitched about that and someone said innocently, "Oh, at our house the generator auto-starts when the sensor sees the grid feed fall off, and the transfer switch cuts over on its own."

Eyes. Green. Jealousy. Some assembly required.

Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at April 25, 2014 09:55 PM (V70Uh) Warren G Harding is a vastly underrated president. His handling of the post WWI depression was brilliant, despite Hoover's (his commerce secretary) objections. If Hoover had done the same as Harding in '29, the Great Depression would have been over by '31 and we'd have never suffered FDR. Plus he gave us Coolidge, easily the greatest president of the 20th century (sorry Ronnie), probably the greatest since Lincoln, and if you want to make an argument against Lincoln on totalitarian grounds (an argument I have sympathy for if not quite buying completely), Coolidge is second only to Washington in the annals of US presidents. If he meant that as a dig, your history teacher needs to study some.

The themes of Firefly and Serenity sort of echo and mirror what's going on now.  Joss Whedon intended for conservatives to be the villains in the show about over-reaching gov control of people (Alliance), while the heroes were the underdogs trying to stay one step ahead of them.  Only now, Whedon and his fellow progs are Alliance and the Tea Party are the Browncoats (heroes).

382 Firefly got treated like the original Star Trek series, badly by its network.  So it died and went off to the syndication hinterlands.  And there off the grid it developed a following.  Which resulted in the movie being made.

As for the popularity.  "I am to misbehave" is a great catch-phrase.  And what Whedon failed to realize is how such sentiments resonate with far more people than he thought.

Just like Alex Keaton went from being the writer's intended one-dimensional conservative foil for the rest of the liberal family to being a big deal that many people wanted to emulate.

Sometimes writers do not realize how a character can jump to life and go in directions they never intended.

Yeah, sorry to be breaking the bad news to you, but the lab reports came back, and there's extensive dihydrogen monoxide contamination. Especially high levels in the kitchen and bathrooms. Also in the laundry area.

We took samples from the plants outside and they've all got detectable internal DHMO. My bet is that the soil around the house got saturated with the stuff at some point and the plants picked it up through their roots.

I really think your best bet is just to unload this property on some sucker quickly, who doesn't realize how much trouble it will be.

Where could you find such a gullible buyer?

Jeez, listen, don't let this get around. It might be tough, but I think I can line someone up. Provided, that is, you cut me in for a few thousand on the sale. I know you're going to be taking a bath here, but believe me, you'll be relieved to finally know your family are safe.

426 The problem with SciFi on network television is that the audience is big enough for series to get greenlighted, but small enough that they don't tend to stick around. That and usually higher production costs tend to kill them off by episode 13. Now movies are a whole different beast since SciFi fans tend to be very loyal and will buy tickets, repeatedly. FOX, to their credit, doesn't make the producers "kid up" any science fiction shows like the other networks do.

One of my neighbours, hearing I had determined to go, came to me, and offered me a hundred dollars to go in his place as a substitute, as he had been drafted. I told him I was better raised than to hire myself out to be shot at; but that I would go, and he should go too, and in that way the government would have the services of us both."

471 Sometimes writers do not realize how a character can jump to life and go in directions they never intended. Posted by: Anna Puma It's that way with ANY art form. The artist may have ideas about what they were trying to say, but it's the audience that decides what the art truly means, and how it will fit into the culture at large. Once the artist finishes the song, painting, novel, poem etc, it's out of his hands and he really has NO say in the matter. And that really pisses off artists. Hence the constant caterwauling by leftist musicians when conservatives use their songs in political contexts.

Even in the spike of 2008, demand didn't drop that much, but now it is dropping like a rock. Can't wait to see what prices will be like when demand goes back up. It is amazingly hard to tell the two apart other than size and a couple of subtle cues.

This causes problems with snap aircraft recognition in air combat maneuvering simulations. Is that a Fulcrum at distance X, or is it the very similar but larger Flanker at distance 1.5X?

I would bet that the unidentified Flankers in the photo are being operated by an oceanic Pacific country. Indonesia or Malaysia, both of whom occasionally exercise with the USN. Brilliant aircraft for the Pacific theater. Huge internal fuel fraction, very long legs, can carry a scarily big antiship missile between the engine nacelles.

519 Good evening, you 'rons and 'ettes and all the ships at sea.

So Mrs. Muse and I finally got around to watching the first episode of Salem. We lasted until they showed Cotton Mather vigorously poking some doxy from behind and that was when we decided to find something else to watch.

I know a little bit about Cotton Mather. He was a complicated guy. It's not a settled question whether he aided or restrained the Salem craziness. But, whatever you may think of him, there's absolutely no evidence of him ever cavorting with prostitutes.

I was hoping this new series would be above resorting to using the usual crude "Christian bigot/racist/hypocrite" stereotype. But it looks like that was too much to ask.

====

This is why I favor the "truth in paycheck act."

First, because politicians would get away with so much less if everyone saw the real difference between their actual pay and their take home pay.

Second, the illogic of it just bugs the shit outa me.

Every employer I have ever encountered (including me) came to understand that worker's comp, fringe bennies, FUTA, FICA, ESC, and the rest of the alphabet soup are a portion of labor burden.  We all added all those costs into our mental image of what we pay each employee -- regardless of how silly we are forced to make their actual pay check appear to them.

A person works an hour, and a 15% burden goes off to SS -- it is part of their pay.  I have never yet met an employer that said "why of course if I lay you off in July I will gladly send you the rest of the 'employer contribution' for Xmas."  So, everybody pays both halves outa their pay.  Sadly, the self employed are voices in the wilderness because they are the only ones that get a chance to see the true cost.

Some racist, eh? Bundy is not sophisticated. If he tried to argue right here, he'd probably get banned as one must follow the forms. Most lurkers don't comment, as they are afraid they don't know the unwritten ground rules. That speaks to me, as I lurked for months to 'get the rhythm". What's frightening is that so much of it is working. Take, for instance, http://tinyurl.com/n8b5ve6 -- what the hell is Rizzo doing still walking around free and bitching about his legal bills being reimbursed by the city?

576 And for more fun and games, guess the year, subject, and speaker:

"It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes. Distinctions in society will always exist under every just government. Equality of talents, of education, or of wealth can not be produced by human institutions. In the full enjoyment of the gifts of Heaven and the fruits of superior industry, economy, and virtue, every man is equally entitled to protection by law; but when the laws undertake to add to these natural and just advantages artificial distinctions, to grant titles, gratuities, and exclusive privileges, to make the rich richer and the potent more powerful, the humble members of society-the farmers, mechanics, and laborers-who have neither the time nor the means of securing like favors to themselves, have a right to complain of the injustice of their Government. There are no necessary evils in government. Its evils exist only in its abuses. If it would confine itself to equal protection, and, as Heaven does its rains, shower its favors alike on the high and the low, the rich and the poor, it would be an unqualified blessing. In the act before me there seems to be a wide and unnecessary departure from these just principles.

Nor is our Government to be maintained or our Union preserved by invasions of the rights and powers of the several States. In thus attempting to make our General Government strong we make it weak. Its true strength consists in leaving individuals and States as much as possible to themselves-in making itself felt, not in its power, but in its beneficence; not in its control, but in its protection; not in binding the States more closely to the center, but leaving each to move unobstructed in its proper orbit.

Experience should teach us wisdom. Most of the difficulties our Government now encounters and most of the dangers which impend over our Union have sprung from an abandonment of the legitimate objects of Government by our national legislation, and the adoption of such principles as are embodied in this act. Many of our rich men have not been content with equal protection and equal benefits, but have besought us to make them richer by act of Congress. By attempting to gratify their desires we have in the results of our legislation arrayed section against section, interest against interest, and man against man, in a fearful commotion which threatens to shake the foundations of our Union. It is time to pause in our career to review our principles, and if possible revive that devoted patriotism and spirit of compromise which distinguished the sages of the Revolution and the fathers of our Union. If we can not at once, in justice to interests vested under improvident legislation, make our Government what it ought to be, we can at least take a stand against all new grants of monopolies and exclusive privileges, against any prostitution of our Government to the advancement of the few at the expense of the many, and in favor of compromise and gradual reform in our code of laws and system of political economy."

That's actually a very good guess.

It's July, 1832 -- just 43 years after the Constitution went into effect -- and it's Andrew Jackson vetoing the rescue legislation for the Second National Bank of the United States. (The Federal Reserve would be the Third National Bank of the United States....but they decided to wait 80 years and change terminology for some reason....)

Both the first and second banks were dismantled over a variety of similar issues. The banks began to dabble in politics, changing policies by political season. They began to meddle with business cycles, meaning that goods that had become unfashionable could not clear the market. They worked to transform every asset into an income stream -- even if they didn't initially own the asset. They worked to shield themselves from bad business decisions ("heads I win; tails you lose"). And they sought to interject themselves into more-and-more aspects of everyday life.

And in both cases, people said "enough" and kicked 'em to the curb.

Never let it be forgotten that we somehow prospered as a country without a central bank for 80 years......

611 We also had 80 years of boom and bust cycles they thought a central bank would alleviate. But that only really worked if you were the Bank of England and kind of had the ownership of the world allowing you to pick designated losers rather than have the Empire bear the brunt of bad choices.

The issues are certainly more complex than are commonly supposed. For example, the importation of slaves into the US became illegal in 1808. Even though you hear about the slave trade and horrible slave ships ending with the Civil War, that had ceased 50+ years prior -- closer to the Revolutionary War than the War Between the States.

622 you know 6 years ago I could write...

in the end the GOP has been stuck in a gradual slide towards being a funhouse mirror version of the democrats since 1986-88. The "senior"(and I use that word saracastically) minds of the GOP senatorial wing in particular decided that what the Teddy Kennedy and Bobby Byrds really wanted was ok but we need to do it more gradually. When the GOP finally resumed power 8 years later in a shocking upset the GOP senatorial wing was already slouching towards England style Labour thought.

It took a while but the GOP Congress finally got the message and they became addicted to power for its own sake. Bush won nomination back in the day precisely BECAUSE HE WAS SEEN AS A MODERATE. Ponder that this man who would be more at home with LBJ than with Reagan is now being painted up as being to the right of Goldwater.

McCain is cut from the same cloth, but refuses to play the word game that Bush did to snag us conservatives back in 2000 because of his personal temperment. The "moderate" GOP wants to deliver 85% of what the democrats want at 99.75% of the price.

Sans the war it is a sale I'll walk away from as a conservative so we can get the Full Donkey Monty.....

that way when the crash happens it will be deeper and quicker to get to so the American people can finally learn the bitter truth as regards US Government as Perpetual Santa.....

Define "our clocks"

While I agree that barkus dorkus won't fight anywhere around the world, this will force our so called allies to make a stand. While I sympathize greatly with the Ukrainians and their problems, let them start the fighting and dying for their own country.

Let the Europeans fight and die in Europe. If the E.U. Socialist have no will to keep the Russian socialist out of their territory then so be it.

The United States has footed the bill for world wide socialism way too long.

Now they have a choice again. To fight or to give up. This time they know going in there will little if any hope.

Some say why fight if you can't win?

I say make the cost so high that even if the bear wins the battle they still lose the war.

Yes it was, Carol. I have even more sympathy for the Polish People than I do anyone else besides the American People.

If September 1, 1939 should have taught the Poles anything, it should have taught them the value of any alliance with anyone. They are of "convenience" only. If the didn't learn from that, the Katyn Massacre should have retaught that lesson, if that wasn't enough, the AK uprising of August 44 should have re taught that lesson.

If that wasn't enough, the Lublin Poles, should have retaught it again.

The Poles are a basically tough people. Freedom, death, or slavery to the russian bear again?

652 Finally!  A dog-killing cop is fired for killing a man's dog, but only after an overwhelming response from the community.  He will also be "investigated" to determine if criminal charges are warranted.  Which is cop PR speak for lets see if we can make up our minds.

654 This is why we continue to have violence from commie anarchists at these anti-American rallies at various conferences throughout the country.  Here we have three commies convicted of a damn bomb plot in Chicago.  They get 5 to 8 years. I have remarked on this before.  Big city Democrat regimes do not want to prosecute and jail left leaning criminals.  Note that the stupid jury failed to convict them of terrorism charges.

664 Clinton docs show what a LOT of us have been saying since 2008.  The housing bubble and collapse came mainly due to CRA and the WH, not Wall Street.  You will NEVER see this reported on any MFM news service, that most likely includes Fox.  Fox did one 2 hr special by Cavuto that noted these problems and then it disappeared down the memory hole.  I suspect they were threatened by the Obamanite crooks.

It's typical necks are not very big & doctor pumps a large amount go steroids & some kind of Novocain but I'm sure it's much better than Novocain. It wore off around 9 last night.

668 "It looks like the Navy is killing its F-35 program. " No. They are committed to the F-35. Buying a few more Growlers during their end production time is all. At some point the F-35 is the only game in town as the SH program winds down and goes away....2018 at the absolute latest. The Navy and Marine Corps will need hundreds of manned aircraft past that point and the F-35 will be the only ticket.

No prob.

For some some better reading Look up "The Anders Army" , The 10th Mechanized Brigade circa Sept 1939, and the short story of Officer Cadet Roman Orlik, who was in my opinion the first tank "Ace" of WW2 fighting in one of theses.

I've been listening to 'Bloodlands' this week. It's amazing that there is even a nation called Poland today, after all of that insane slaughter.

Hollywood still wants us to believe the Black List was the greatest tragedy ever. I'm just amazed that there were more severe consequences for those supporters of monsters.
