So the President is pushing college education, but is it really required for the jobs that you are most likely to get? Especially in a tanking economy where there is a growth of college grads in dead-end jobs. Is it worth 6 figure debt when you could do this? But if you do go for a degree, perhaps it should be oil and gas related. Shopping Cart Danger
So when are we going to ban shopping carts? Shopping carts send on average 66 kids to the ER a day.
In other news, some soft drinks cause cancer. Of course, you'd have to drink thousands of cokes a day to attain the dangerous levels that the lab animals were subjected to but hey, science or something.
Bra App

There really is an app for everything. The world's most high tech bra that only unhooks when it detects true love, or when I wear my summer whites.

In other product news, there is now an alarm clock vibrator.
Homeowner Tip

Pro tip for all y'all homeowner's out there. If you get TP'ed, don't use fire to clean it up. Jeez. These folks give morons a bad name I tell ya.
Taylor Davis
Dayum. She's pretty good.
Earthquake Danger
Perhaps while we wait for SMOD to arrive, maybe a large earthquake will strike instead?
“Based on our statistical analysis, the hypothesis that current seismicity in the New Madrid region is primarily composed of aftershocks from the 1811-1812 sequence fails,” Page and Hough write. If the ongoing seismicity in the region were composed of aftershocks, those quakes would be relieving strain and reducing the earthquake hazard. Instead, this new research indicates, strain is continuing to accumulate in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, and the earthquake hazard remains high.
Homeland Security
We really, really need to do away with Homeland Security. Investigating movie piracy? Really? So the MPAA can just ring up Homeland Security and get a guy arrested in the middle of a movie that quickly? We need to do away with Hollywood tax breaks too.

no what is required for the jobs Obamanomics is gonna allow the economy to have is a nose that forms a tight seal in a Democrat's ass or the ability to act for the Arabian and Chinese tourists that come to Epcot United States the Walt Disney Theme Park Nation....
If the GOP doesn't get serious about blaming the right people for our economic straitjacket EPA has us in we're doomed.

My company got 900 engineering resumes from college job fairs and made 9 offers.
The interesting part was that only 3 of those 9 accepted. The job market is great if you're brilliant and have good references from your high-status internships. Sucks to be an average schmoe, though.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will announce a new plan next week to help Americans who continue to struggle to find jobs even as the economy recovers from recession, his senior adviser, Dan Pfeiffer, said on Saturday.
"With some action on all our parts, we can help more job seekers find work, and more working Americans find the economic security they deserve," Pfeiffer said in his email.

In light of the last post, I got the last of my W-2's in today. Between my USN retainer pay (it's not retirement pay for another year or so) and my real job I'm pulling in almost 100K a year, I'm less than 5K short of being evil hated rich. Of that a third goes to various taxes, mostly on the Fed level. Some of the rest of it goes to booze and I mostly piss away the remainder on various luxuries like housing, groceries and utilities. But I still know how much I have on hand right now...and if it drops below a certain point I get panicky.

I have seriously considered the move but as I understand it, housing is in such short supply that what little there is costs an arm and a leg.
Not much point to earn a lot of money and then have to spend most of it on living expenses.
Now if you have some means of living rough (rv, travel trailer etc) then it's a good deal.
Even that's a toss up because many towns are enforcing laws against folks doing that.

"Icing" the puck is simply dumping the puck down the ice, beyond any of your own team's forwards, simply as a means of getting the play out of your own zone. It's essentially a delay-of-game maneuver. A pass to a forward is not icing, nor is a shot on goal.

Icing is when a defending player sends the puck from behind the center red line (e.g. in his own end) below the goal line of the other team. There's some more to understand re: who touches it first, but that's the gist of it. It's for good reason: when the puck is "iced", the ensuing faceoff takes place in the defending teams' zone. The icing rule prevents a bad team from just flinging the puck down the rink every time they get in trouble.

Icing can still work to your advantage, though. If the other team's offense has a lot of momentum, and has been making many shots on goal, icing the puck can buy a little time to regroup, maybe change out a player or two, and who knows? your center might win the faceoff.

I think the process for turning in a Canadian card involves standing in line for a while. In the cold.

The best explanation I can provide is that it allows players to moderate the game in a way; they regulate certain behaviors. If you were to watch a game in North America at a level where fighting is tolerated, you will not see many players carrying their sticks high, nor will you see too many other stick-as-weapon occurrences. Watch a game played in Europe, where fighting is banned at all levels, and you will see a much higher occurrence of those fouls. The prospect of a fight cools the heads of players who would use their sticks for other than their intended purposes. This effect is lessened at the NHL level, but still present. Any player who goes outside the bounds of what is considered acceptable play can expect repercussions, excepting star players, though they rarely get into the rough stuff.

OK, wasn't sure about that myself. But icing still works if you have a heavy offensive press on your goal, and you need time to regroup. They wouldn't do it if there weren't some benefits. Of course, if the opposing center wins the faceoff, you could give up a goal right away, so it's a crap shoot. But sometimes, a crap shoot may look better than the certainty of giving up a goal if the an offensive press continues unchecked.

And if "things don't work out" on the athletic plan, well, the hook is in the cheek, and a Nice Man from student finance will show you how you can still get that high-prestige degree (high prestige limited to area between Pa. and Ind.) on credit a-loan. I was four when the Good Friday Earthquake shook up Anchorage and the environs. This year they are having a 50th anniversary party for survivors, of which there are a great many. Of course, the liberal idiots won't call it what it has been called for fifty years--Good Friday. They are calling it the Great Alaskan Quake, which is silly, because there have always been and will always be more earthquakes in Alaska.
That damned thing shook for over five minutes. My mom said she figured it was just not ever going to stop. Watched the trees bend all the way to the ground and back to the other side, before a lot of them split up the middle. Also I remember the smell of all the glass bottles in the pantry falling and breaking together--whiskey, ammonia, lemon polish. And melting snow for drinking water for a few days, and cooking on the Coleman stove.
To a four year old, and earthquake is an adventure.

Let me tell you, it is a SHTF scenario if anything above a 5.5 hits that area. NONE of the bridges or other major infrastructure is able to withstand it. Plus, based on the underlying soil types, it will devastate a large swath of the central US.

Ironically the bedrock and soil structure that makes California quakes so frequent and destructive also inhibits the shock waves from traveling far at high intensity
On the other hand, bedrock and soils east of the Rockies are more solid and conduct the shocks hundreds of miles from the epicenter. The August 2011 Northern Virginia quake at 5.8 wouldn't have been felt more than 100 miles at any intensity in CA, but it was felt strongly 250 miles away in NYC

Have you ever watched 'Supernatural'?
It's about two brothers...Sam and Dean Winchester...who are demon hunters.
They drive around in a '69 Impala, which the older brother, Dean, calls 'baby'.
Dean is addicted to Classic Rock...and likes busty Asian beauties porn.
The younger brother, Sam, is kind of an info nerd who reads up on particulars of the Lore that is needed for them to battle the forces of darkness.
It's pretty entertaining, imo.
It's in its' Ninth Season right now on The CW, and still going strong.

we were in Spenard and had a well so we had enough water and shared it with lots of other people for a few weeks.
now, the same earthquake would be a totally different disaster. 1st -- there are so many people living in reclaimed swampland that would take quite a pounding. there would be 1000's of miles of broken pipelines, so no water, sewer, natural gas, etc. natural gas leaks would be so widespread that it would have to be shutdown and everyone would end up with no heat, etc., etc.
the sense of self-reliance that helped so much the first time has been replaced with PFDs.

I was taught that true fiddling was done with the viol in the crook of the arm. Classical violinists almost never play all the strings at once. Western-swing style playing involves so much multi-string "chord" playing that looser bows and flatter bridges are often called for. I believe this style derives from Swedish folk fiddling. Whoever invented it had an unlimited supply of rosin.

We're trying to set up a "Nosh-Posh" evening where we have a nice dinner and then absorb some culture -- the Stanford Savoyards' production of "The Mikado" http://www.stanford.edu/group/savoyards/cgi-bin/ .
For those morons who are not already Gilbert and Sullivan fans, The Mikado has some prime material ( http://math.boisestate.edu/gas/mikado/html/index.html ), including a song by an executioner about those who "never would be missed", a song by an emperor who rhapsodizes about making "the punishment fit the crime", and -- of course -- contains the line: "IÂ’m really very sorry for you all, but itÂ’s an unjust world, and virtue is triumphant only in theatrical performances."
*UPDATE* The BH informs me that we will be dining at the Osteria -- http://tinyurl.com/b7km4dm -- and I'm disturbed to note that I can't link the actual restaurant's website through the clutter of all those talking about the website.

So first I was late to the comments a few days ago when an article by some guy who once replaced me in a job was the subject of ace's post.
Then Pat of TN signs off before I can respond re fighting in hockey. Poor form to dissent when the other party's already gone, it seems to me. And Pat is a good guy and a hockey guy besides.
But I think fighting (99% of the time, understandably, just brief clumsy wrestling matches) adds nothing to the game, is boring and stupid, and does not play any constructive role. Apart from American football, there is no team sport I can think of in the world that provides more tools within the rules for players to "moderate" the behavior of the other side. Legal physical play in hockey can be used to "moderate" the other sides' behavior, but it requires much more effort - and guts - and team contribution than the pro-wrestling "fights".
Fighting is the stupidest part of pro hockey, but the action-killers remain what they've been for a while - holding and interference. And the size of the players on a rink that hasn't grown.
Not aware that European hockey has any unusual frequency of stick fouls. It typically has a lot more speed and action, and not just because of the wider rink. Last NHL game I saw I actually sat first row behind the goal at the Shark Tank in San Jose. Had never sat that close at an NHL rink. Was fairly stunned how unimpressive the level of play was - mostly just shoving and poorly chosen shots from bad angles and holding, not much hockey. Still amazes me that guys with 70MPH wrist/snap shots wind up from 20 feet out - just stupid. The size and physical power of the players are greater than ever, the habits and coaching and style of play are often jaw-droppingly unimpressive.

Carbon black was added to white rubber tires for strength and durability. Early tires were all white. Dad was in WWII with a rich kid whose family ran a carbon black plant in Philedelphia: burn coal oil as dirtily as possible under glass plates, then a machine scraped the ash off, by the carload.
The original Mr Bibendum ("Let's drink!" or "Now, a toast!") is not cute, tougher than hell really -- cigar chomping like-a-boss, standing up at a drinking party of road tires, offering a chalice of nails and broken glass:

I found the Shark Tank to be rather uninspiring. Now, my first game at the Capital Center in 1984, wow! Now that was stunning. If you've never been to NHL hockey in a real arena, it's so intense -- sounds, sights, everything. I have no desire to drink alcohol whatsoever at a hockey game. Don't want to water the senses down.

It is nice to have a degree, even though you don't use it. First you must get the interview, which means you must get pass the retards passing your name forward. Since they do NOT know what the company does let alone what your job will be, it is simple to throw out anyone who does NOT have the correect require degree! It is no wonder people lie! The man doing the interview will know what the job requires. He will know if you have the requirements. If you have a science or engineering background, you can always learn what you need.
